Grand Valley State Claims 22nd Consecutive GLIAC Presidents’ Cup

Grand Valley State captured the 2020-21 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Presidents’ Cup Trophy, the all-sports trophy awarded at the end of the year to the conference member that demonstrates general excellence in all sports, for the 22nd consecutive year the GLIAC announced Wednesday (June 9). GVSU has won every Presidents’ Cup Trophy since the 1998-99 athletic year and has now captured the Presidents’ Cup Trophy 27 times in school history.
 
“We are humbled and proud to capture the 2020-21 Presidents’ Trophy,” said Director of Athletics Keri Becker. “The GLIAC is an outstanding conference with a rich tradition of excellence in every sport so it is an incredible feat to win this trophy. It was also a challenging year for our student-athletes, staff, administration, families and parents, and we thank everyone for what they did to make it possible to compete and play,” added Becker.  

Grand Valley State finished with 144.0 points, well ahead of second place Ashland (94.5), third place Saginaw Valley State (85.5) and fourth place Wayne State (82.5). The Lakers claimed 10 GLIAC titles during the 2021 campaign, with the women scoring 86.0 points and the men 58.0. The standings are based on final regular season standings except for the following sports, which are based on conference tournament finish: cross country, golf, indoor and outdoor track & field and swimming and diving. The GLIAC did not conduct championships for football and men’s and women’s cross country due to COVID-19.

The US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup provides a progressive, competitive experience to US Youth Soccer teams from the state to regional to national level.  The Presidents Cup gives players an opportunity to compete against teams from across the country at a high level for the joy and the challenge of the game.   It provides the chance to experience a unique US Youth Soccer event with camaraderie, community and competition through sport. 2021 Complete Rules Document, (Updated 9/24/2020)

The most important changes to the Indiana Soccer PRESIDENTS Cup Rules are as follows:

For the 2020-2021 playing year (2021 cup games) the 18U and 19U age divisions will be combined at the national level event.   They will continue to be played as separate age divisions for the state and regional level events. By 2021-2022 (2022 cup games) the 18U and 19U age divisions will be separated into separate divisions at the national event just as they are for the state and regional level events.

Additionally, beginning this year for STATE and PRESIDENTS cups, once teams are ranked they will be seeded into brackets.  If two or more teams from the same club are seeded into the same bracket, the seeding order will not be changed to separate these teams.  They will remain in the same bracket.  When the schedule is written, teams from the same club in the same bracket will play that game first in group play then the regular order of game play will resume.

If you’re looking to watch the best golfers from the United States compete in Charlotte, your chance will soon arrive.

Tickets for the 2022 Presidents Cup golf tournament — set to take place at Charlotte’s Quail Hollow Club from Sept. 19-25 — will go on sale to the public on Oct. 1 at 10 a.m., the PGA announced Thursday.

Like its older cousin, the Ryder Cup, the Presidents Cup will see a team of golfers from the United States competing against an “International” team that features golfers from across the world, minus Europe. Instead of winning a purse, the players allocate a portion of the competition’s revenues to a charity of their choice.

Once tickets go on sale, fans will be able to select from either General Admission tickets or costlier Captains’ Club tickets, which include access to a balcony area, sports bar and premium food and drink. General admission tickets for competition days will start at $100, while daily Captains’ Club tickets will start at $175 for competition days.

“We are looking forward to bringing the Presidents Cup to Quail Hollow Club in 2022, as Charlotte continues to be a premier global destination for sports fans around the world,” Executive Director Adam Sperling said. “We are unveiling ticket options that will cater to fans locally and abroad as we look to deliver a tremendous fan-first onsite experience throughout every facet of the event.”

2021 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow Postponed to 2022

The PGA Tour announced Wednesday that the Wells Fargo Championship will return to Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte next year and the Presidents Cup has been moved to 2022.

“I think it’s a real positive,” said tournament director Gary Sobba. “I think everyone is excited.”

The Presidents Cup was originally scheduled for September of 2021 at Quail Hollow Club, but has been postponed, along with the Ryder Cup. As a result, Quail Hollow will host the Wells Fargo Championship, which cannot be played the same year on the same course as the Presidents Cup.

Sobba said information on ticket sales will be announced soon.

“We are working on that as we speak,” Sobba said.

Despite being canceled in 2020, the Wells Fargo Championship still raised $500,000 for local charities, and now with the unexpected 2021 event, should still reach its goal of $1.5-$2 million.

“Charity is a focus of the event,” said Sobba.

“We are thankful that our global partners Citi and Rolex, our friends at Quail Hollow Club, our long-time annual title sponsor in Charlotte and all associated with the Presidents Cup and the Junior Presidents Cup have approached this change with a unified, positive spirit. We are confident the move will give us even more runway as we bring the Presidents Cup to Charlotte in 2022,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan.

The 2022 Wells Fargo Championship will be relocated to TPC Potomac before making its return to Quail Hollow in 2023.

The 2022 Presidents Cup will mark the first time the event has been held in the Southeast. Trevor Immelman has been announced as the International Team captain for the 2022 event while the U.S. Team captain will be announced at a later date. Qualification for the 2022 Presidents Cup will be determined at a later date following discussions with the captains and tournament leadership.

Presidents Cup: US dominate the singles to beat the International team 16-14

The visitors had trailed 10-8 going into the final day, but Woods led by example as he beat Abraham Ancer 3&2 in the first match.

Patrick Reed, whose caddie was banned after “shoving” a spectator on Saturday, beat Taiwan’s CT Pan 4&2.

The US won eight of the 12 points with Matt Kuchar sealing victory.

“We did it together,” said Woods, who recorded a 27th win in the tournament, beating Phil Mickelson’s record of 26. “We came here as a team. My team-mates and my boys all played well, the captains did an amazing job.

“It’s been one of the more amazing challenges but all the guys believed in one another and relied on one another. “

It is the US’ 11th win in the 13th edition of the biennial tournament, with one draw.

“We were right there to the end, just a couple of matches didn’t quite go our way,” said International captain Ernie Els.

“We’re getting closer. We’ve just got to keep it up.”

Reed’s final day redemption

Reed, who lost his previous three matches at the tournament, was heckled throughout the competition after he was penalised for improving the lie of his ball at last week’s Hero World Challenge in The Bahamas.

He was criticised by members of Els’ team including Australian Cameron Smith, who said he “doesn’t have any sympathy for anyone that cheats”.

“If you get up in your match, the crowd will be pretty quiet. I was able to do that and silence a couple.

“The past couple days were tough, and today still wasn’t easy.”

90,000 Immunity of ex-presidents can be enshrined in the Constitution

The working group on amending the Constitution of Russia proposes to enshrine the immunity of former presidents in the Basic Law.
