15 musicians who smashed their guitars at concerts

Phoebe Bridgers
Last week’s rock highlight: Phoebe Bridgers went to SNL to sing “I Know the End,” a rather quiet and not-so-destroying thing.
But by the end of the performance, Phoebe broke up and in the finale began to beat the instrument on the stage.
Surprisingly, Bridgers’ Rockstar performance generated mixed reactions on social media. Some complained: they say, it’s not worth it to destroy an instrument in the main show of the country – it’s undignified! It seemed to others that it didn’t work out very effectively: the guitar turned out to be strong and indestructible – Phoebe couldn’t break it into pieces. Still others thought that beating a guitar is wasteful: it costs money! David Crosby from The Byrds was especially distinguished: he called Phoebe’s performance “pathetic”.
However, the Bridgers also had star defenders, such as Dave Grohl, who supported Phoebe’s performance and compared it to Nirvana’s early years.
The Who
British rock classics are the pioneers of guitar wrecking on stage. The first time it happened by accident: the band’s guitarist Pete Townsend hit the low ceiling of the venue with his guitar during a performance and broke the neck.
“I scratched my howling rickenbacker up and down the microphone stand, then flipped the special switch I had recently fitted on the guitar: it would begin to mutter and shoot the front row of the audience with sonic bullets. I violently threw the guitar into the air and felt a terrible trembling,” Townsend said. – It was a sound that went from a roar to a rumbling growl. I looked up and saw that the guitar had punched a hole in the low ceiling. I make the following decision: I pull it out of the hole and in a crazy frenzy I hit it on the ceiling again and again. What was a neat opening has become a chaos of rubble.”
It turned out spectacularly: the fans liked it, and the musicians began to break instruments on stage on purpose – in 1967 alone, The Who broke more than 35 guitars. Fans of the group even counted!
When it comes to broken guitars, Muse is somehow not the first thing to remember. However, the band’s lead singer Matthew Bellamy is an avid guitar demolitionist.
In 2004 alone, Matt broke 140 guitars – this achievement was even recorded by the Guinness Book of Records.
Whatever Bellamy did with the unfortunate instrument: smashed it against the stage, threw it into the crowd, and once even effectively threw the guitar into the sea.
The Clash
Bassist Paul Simonon destroyed a Fender bass at The Clash’s Punk Pillars concert. This moment was captured by a photographer, and everyone saw the result: the photo of Simonon smashing the bass was on the cover of The Clash’s iconic London Calling album.
Why did Paul break his bass? The situation was as follows: the bouncers of the club where The Clash concert was held did not let the fans out of their seats for a long time – this infuriated the musician. Curiously, this was the only time Simonon broke the instrument.
Green Day
It is a rare case when a broken guitar is not a stage performance, but the result of an outburst of anger.
Green Day played a set at the iHeart Festival in 2012: right in the middle of the performance, bandleader Billy Joe Armstrong thought on the screen that the band supposedly had one minute left to play.
What did Billy Joe do? He made a sharp rebuke to the organizers of the festival and for some reason to Justin Bieber (they say, you don’t allow yourself to do this with him!) and smashed his guitar in a spectacular way. It came out awkward.
Kiss performances have always been energy-intensive, thanks in large part to guitarist Paul Stanley. He played on a budget Gibson Marauder model, which was generally not a pity – so Paul crash-tested the instrument with pleasure and diligence.
Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix abused guitars with particular zeal – not only broke, but even burned. The classic case is the Montreux Festival in 1967: Jimi doused the instrument with flammable liquid and set it on fire spectacularly. By the way, the guitar was painted by Hendrix himself – and the incident with its arson fell into history.
Nirvana
Cobain’s powerful rockstar energy has been repeatedly emphasized by damaging guitars at concerts. And not only guitars: Kurt could take and, without the consent of the rest of Nirvana members, in a fit of passion, crush the drum set: Dave Grohl, who was in charge of drums in the group, admitted that he was not in the spirit of such atrocities of the frontman!
It cannot be said that Kurt did this on purpose: the Nirvana leader said that he often went into an uncontrollable rage at concerts and could beat all the band’s live equipment, which cost a lot of money in its early stages.
Garth Brooks
Country singer Garth Brooks does not think so: in 1991, at a concert in Dallas, he destroyed an expensive Japanese Takamine guitar, which at that time cost no less than $ 1,300. Interestingly, 16 years later, the guitar was literally reassembled from fragments and transferred to the Smithsonian Institution.
Nine Inch Nails
Nine Inch Nails were different in that they not only clobbered guitars and other instruments, but also each other.
The band’s early gigs are a form of madness: Trent Reznor could run across the stage, knock over a keyboard set, climb on one of the band members and even give a cuff.
Ritchie Blackmore
Ritchie Blackmore was a systematic guitar breaker. One episode from this series made history – a concert by his band Rainbow in 1977. Richie sadistically mocked the guitar: he crawled with his feet on the instrument, pounded the neck on the stage, finished off everything that was left of the guitar, holding on to the wire.
It’s funny that karma once repaid Richie in full: at one of the Deep Purple concerts in 1987, the musician threw the guitar up, but the instrument landed right on the knuckles. The result is a broken finger and a derailed Deep Purple tour.
King Princess
The indie pop King Princess sounds pretty subdued and subdued in studio recordings. Another thing is the singer’s concerts, which cannot be denied energy. This is confirmed by the live fragments in the “Ohio” video, where the singer spectacularly cracks down on the guitar in the finale.
Arcade Fire
Phoebe Bridgers’ live isn’t the first SNL guitar demolition. In 2007, Arcade Fire made their debut on the show with the song “Intervention”. During a performance, vocalist Win Butler broke a string. Probably, guided by the principle of “the shed burned down – burn and the hut”, the frontman split the instrument. The guitar, by the way, was acoustic – it was not difficult to destroy it.
The YouTube star who came up with the idea of marrying sparkling synth-pop with metal cuts also likes to beat instruments at concerts. In particular, she repeatedly completed the performance of the song “X” with the collapse of an acoustic guitar that fell under a hot hand.
An exemplary rock lesson from a pop star: in 2010, at the American Music Awards, Kesha took the guitar in the finale of the performance of “We R Who We R” and literally dealt with the instrument in a couple of tricks.
Bonus: Kurt Russell
One day, on the set of Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, the actor seemed to be possessed by his famous musician namesake: Kurt picked up a guitar, started playing and beat the instrument.
It turned out that the performer of the role of the “hangman” John Root destroyed a real antique: a rare Martin guitar from the 1870s. It cost 40 thousand dollars.
After this incident, Martin prohibited film companies from taking their rare props tools.
