Meniscus rupture, causes, symptoms, treatment of meniscus rupture in Zaporozhye
The knee joint has a considerable load, so patients with complaints of knee pain often come to see orthopedic traumatologists. In 75% of cases of knee joint injuries, a meniscus tear in the knee is diagnosed.
What is a knee meniscus tear?
The meniscus is the intra-articular cartilage between the tibia and the femur. Its task is to protect the knee from overload and provide the ability to move. Damage to the meniscus of the knee is the loss of the integrity of this cartilage lining (the appearance of cracks or rupture of the meniscus).
Degrees of meniscus tear
In order to determine how severe meniscal damage a patient has, specialists use the Stoller classification. There are 4 degrees in this scale:
- 0 degree – meniscus without any damage
- 1 degree – minor changes and microtrauma of the cartilage
- 2 degree – more serious violations of the meniscus structure, cracks, partial rupture (tear) of the meniscus
- 3 degree – separation of the meniscus from the place of attachment, rupture of the meniscus
To find out the degree of damage to the meniscus, you need to undergo an examination and consult a specialist.
Types of meniscus injury
There are two menisci in our knee – internal and external, or in medical terms – lateral and medial. These, in turn, connect to the cruciate and lateral ligaments of the knee to hold the knee in position and allow maximum mobility. The structure of the meniscus is as follows: the body of the cartilage, the anterior and posterior horns of the meniscus, which are attached to the tibia and femur.
What are meniscal injuries?
- Depending on the type of meniscus : tear of the medial (tear of the outer meniscus) or tear of the lateral meniscus (tear of the inner meniscus of the knee joint)
- Depending on the part of the injured cartilage : tear of the body of the meniscus, tear of the horn meniscus (tear body of the medial meniscus, tear of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus, tear of the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus)
- Depending on the nature of the injury : horizontal meniscus tear, longitudinal tear, radial-transverse meniscus tear, watering-handle meniscus tear, patchwork meniscus tear meniscus).
Causes of meniscal tears
The main cause of damage to the meniscus of the knee joint is an excessive load on the knee, which the cartilage lining cannot withstand. As a result – cracks, ruptures of cartilage tissue. Very often, such injuries occur in athletes, ballet dancers, dancers. However, in everyday life, meniscal injuries are also not uncommon. An awkward movement, a fall, hard physical labor, age-related changes in the joints cause meniscus injuries.
Torn meniscus: symptoms and signs
A torn meniscus can be indicated by severe, sudden pain in the knee. Many patients note that at the time of the injury they heard a distinct crunch, a click in the joint. There is a blockade of the joint – the knee cannot be fully extended. Swelling appears, hemorrhage into the joint is possible if the vessels are affected.
Another characteristic feature of a meniscus injury is that after first aid, the discomfort subsides and it seems that the damage was insignificant. This is a very misleading impression – the next even a small load on the joint can lead to more serious consequences. In addition, a recent injury is easier and faster to treat than an old meniscus tear. Therefore, if you have an injury, be sure to consult an experienced orthopedist.
Diagnosis of injuries of the meniscus of the knee joint
There was an opinion that for any injury of the musculoskeletal system, an x-ray should be taken. In fact, this is not entirely true – with meniscus injuries, this diagnostic method is not informative. X-rays are excellent at detecting fractures, but cartilage damage is not visible on it. You can diagnose a meniscus injury on an ultrasound of the joint, but MRI of the joints will give the most information about the damage. With the help of tomography, you can fully visualize the joint – bone and soft tissues, cartilage, nerves and blood vessels.
Diagnostic arthroscopy can determine the cause of joint pain with 95% accuracy. This procedure allows you to see the joint “from the inside” through several micro-punctures in the knee. A miniature camera allows you to visualize on the screen the meniscus of the knee, a rupture of cartilage tissue. Thus, the specialist receives the most complete and accurate information about the state of the joint. This makes it possible to choose the most effective way to solve knee problems.
In any case, a specialist should prescribe this or that examination after a clinical examination.
Meniscus tear treatment
How to treat a meniscus tear? After a clinical examination and examination of the results of examinations, the specialist determines how seriously the meniscus is injured. This depends on the treatment strategy. If the damage to the meniscus is minor, the orthopedist prescribes conservative therapy. More serious injuries of the meniscus, rupture, blockade of the joint are clear indications for surgery.
Conservative treatment of the meniscus of the knee joint
Non-surgical treatment of the meniscus includes physiotherapy, exercise therapy and medication. The main task of such treatment is to relieve pain and inflammation, restore the structure of cartilage. Drugs are also prescribed to prevent damage. If conservative therapy does not bring results, the only way to solve the problem with the joint is an operation on the meniscus.
Surgical treatment of a torn meniscus of the knee
For serious injuries (tears) of the meniscus, the most effective treatment is arthroscopic surgery. During such an intervention, the specialist stitches the damaged meniscus, removes partially or completely.
Since arthroscopy is a low-traumatic operation, all manipulations in the joint cavity are carried out through two micro-incisions. This allows you to carry out the treatment as safely and painlessly as possible, and significantly reduce the recovery time after a meniscus rupture.
Benefits of meniscus tear treatment in our clinic:
- Highly specialized – our Orthopedics Clinic is one of the few centers where specialized care is provided for patients with injuries and diseases of the joints (including those with sports injuries).
- Many years of experience and high qualifications – joint arthroscopy is a priority area of work for our specialists. We perform more than 500 arthroscopic joint surgeries every year.
- Modern equipment – the presence of an arthroscopic stand allows you to perform operations with maximum accuracy and guarantee patients a quick recovery.
- Individual approach – we take into account the characteristics of each patient and, taking into account them, select the tactics of treatment and rehabilitation in order to restore the health of the joints.
- Comfort and service in everything – from the first call to the administrator, to discharge from the hospital.
Rehabilitation after meniscus rupture
For the treatment of joints in our clinic, an integrated approach is used, that is, we provide both surgical and restorative treatment. The patient starts rehabilitation under the guidance of an experienced specialist the very next day after the operation. The rehabilitator works with the patient to develop muscles, teaches how to load the limb correctly, and how to behave in everyday life. The specialist also selects a set of exercises for each patient, which will help to quickly restore the functions of the limb and return to an active life.
Consequences of a meniscal tear
Without proper and timely treatment, meniscal injuries not only limit activity, but also reduce the quality of life. Sharp pain in the knee, blockade of the joint – these are chronic consequences of a meniscus rupture. And if at rest the knee joint does not cause any disturbance, then it is worth putting a load on the knee – unpleasant manifestations again remind of themselves. Moreover, during an injury, parts of the meniscus can break away from the attachment site, move in the joint and damage the cartilaginous surface of the joint. Thus, a torn meniscus provokes arthrosis of the knee (destruction of the knee joint).
What should I do if my meniscus is torn?
As with any injury, first aid should be given to a meniscal injury: apply cold and, if possible, do not load the injured limb. Even if the state of health has improved, it is necessary to consult an orthopedist-traumatologist for a consultation. The specialist will prescribe the necessary examinations that will help identify the cause of the problem with the joint and choose the best treatment.
Berdsk exposed: what was found on the site of the old city in 2022
On Saturday at eleven o’clock in the morning a cloud of fragrant steam of freshly fried kebabs is already rising over the Berdskaya Spit. On the first, really warm days off, Berdsk residents poured out onto the shore with barbecues and camping chairs. An almost unearthly landscape opens up from the high shore – a long strip of wet sand and a dark blue, white-veined, melting sea.
A hundred years ago, the view was completely different: from this hill, one could probably see the merchant houses in the city center and the domes of the cathedrals. Here stood the old Berdsk.
“Siberian Atlantis”
A group of sightseers – twenty people – bent over the map. This is a unique scheme: it combines the modern outlines of the Berdskaya Spit and the plan of the old city. A few years ago, this map was created by Konstantin Golodyaev, an employee of the Novosibirsk Museum. And so far only it gives a visual representation of how everything here looked before.

Prophecies and the mystery of the death of engineer-genius Yuri Kondratyuk
It is still difficult for tourists to find their way around. When the author of the tour, Vyacheslav Karmanov, talks about the process of flooding the Novosibirsk reservoir, about how the river gradually captured the remains of the city, some specify which river became the Ob Sea in the end …
People come here quite often with excursions. This is the case when you live and do not know that a whole flooded city lies very close by. Not just lies, but once a year it practically rises to the surface. This unofficial monument of history was poetically called “Siberian Atlantis”.
Artificial sea as a necessity
The need for the Novosibirsk reservoir was discussed even before the revolution, then the issue was returned to in the twenties, but then there was simply not enough money for such a large-scale project. Then they remembered about the hydroelectric power station in the late thirties: work would have begun if it were not for the war, the project had to be frozen again. In the fifties there were already financial opportunities. In addition, during the war years, the city received dozens of evacuated enterprises and grew at an unprecedented pace.
“In 1950, almost 80% of the settlements in Western Siberia were without electricity,” says Horde writer and historian Oleg Lykov. – It’s hard to imagine it. Soon a satellite will fly, a nuclear power plant in Obninsk will start working … Hence the decision to build a hydroelectric power station, mechanize the current and, in fact, start living like a human being.”
Leningrad engineers have long determined the location of the future hydroelectric power station. We considered, among other things, a section of the river within the city.
“The most interesting thing is that the best site for geological surveys turned out to be the Bugrinskiy site, where the Bugrinskiy bridge now stands,” explains Konstantin Golodyaev, an employee of the Novosibirsk Museum. – It was the best place, the most economical, when the output of these shale rocks is not far here, a good foundation for a hydroelectric power station. Imagine – there would be a hydroelectric power station right in the center of the city. It turns out that the city would be around the hydroelectric power station. But in the end they chose another place – upstream, near the village of Chemy.
So the fate of Berdsk was sealed. For several years, the city was actually transferred. Eleven thousand buildings were moved, including four schools, thirty shops and two and a half thousand private houses.
The flood itself did not happen overnight either. The city was not overwhelmed by a wave, as they could show in a blockbuster. Water flooded Berdsk gradually.
Treasure Island
“We used to bathe and swim here when we were little and did not even suspect that we were swimming in the old city! – a resident of Berdsk Ksenia Kuchanskaya looks around, as if recognizing the place again. – And when they told us about the flooded city, we were children, we were delighted! We walked on the rocks that were still sticking out under the water. And when I found out that you can even come here, it was just the discovery of the century. Here you literally find yourself involved in history.
Xenia comes here, as she herself put it, “to think”. He puts on rubber boots, wanders along the foundations of some unrecognizable buildings. Along the streets of Siberian Atlantis.
Wet sand, crystals of melted ice, fragments of bricks underfoot. Every now and then come across evidence that relatively recently there was a city. These are rusty nails, door locks, staples, metal objects, the purpose of which is not understood by every modern city dweller.
“When I was young and went to archaeological excavations, I dreamed that I would pick up all kinds of shards, bones, fragments of ceramics, bring them home and sit, stroke them, admire them,” says Vyacheslav Karmanov, the author of the “Flooded Berdsk” excursion tour. – Bring it home. They are still lying somewhere in the bins of their parents. Are gathering dust. The value of such finds is important here and now. If you bring a nail home, it will lose its value. In addition, it will quickly fall apart: objects are preserved in water and sand, and quickly deteriorate in air.
Byrd’s treasures, which can be picked up from the bottom by simply bending down, lie around the Horseradish Island. In summer, it is an unremarkable island, of which there are many on the Ob Sea, lined with fishing huts. Once a year, in April, when the water has not yet risen, it becomes a place of attraction for historians and treasure hunters. This is a very short period: it is difficult to predict when the ice on the shallows will melt and how long the “sands of time”, as they are often called here, will remain in this state.
At the bottom
This place has no status. This is not a historical monument, not a particularly protected area. So while anyone can come here, take anything.

Unfunny Novosibirsk: why are there so few jokes about our city?
About a dozen people with metal detectors wander along the bottom. They are looking for coins, crosses, jewelry. Something valuable is still found in the Berdsky Sands. Legally, these people do not violate anything, but from an ethical point of view, such fishing is controversial.
“Just imagine, three hundred years later, archaeologists come, find a cemetery, and do not find a single cross,” says Vyacheslav Karmanov. What conclusions will they draw? That there was no Christianity in Berdsk. Taking away all these values, we violate the picture of history, make it unreliable.
This year, according to Vyacheslav, there are few really interesting finds. In past years, irons, axes, coins, scissors, human bones came across.
