Retro sports apparel and collectibles offer a unique alternative to contemporary fan gear. These items appeal to a fan’s sense of nostalgia and appreciation for sports history, making them stand out from typical gift options. Some ideas for vintage sports gifts include:
- A t-shirt featuring the recipient’s favorite team from a significant year in their fandom
- A canvas print of a historic game ticket from a memorable victory
- A set of coasters showcasing classic logos from a particular league or era
- A retro-style hat featuring a defunct team or old-school design
- A vintage-inspired pennant or banner for display in their fan cave
The wide range of products and designs available means that gift-givers can find items to suit any budget or occasion. Whether it’s a stocking stuffer or a major birthday present, vintage sports merchandise offers something special for every fan.
Additionally, the unique nature of many vintage-inspired items reduces the likelihood of duplicate gifts. This makes retro sports gear an excellent choice for office gift exchanges, fan club events, or any situation where multiple people might be shopping for a known sports enthusiast.

8 Old School Apparel Brands That Are Now Cool Again Thanks To Celebs
Trends come and go, and this statement is especially true when it comes to your clothes. Fashionistas around the world are always pushing the boundaries of what it means to be fashionable, and sometimes, they just need to pull something old school out from the archives.
Remember how Billabong and Ocean Pacific (OP) were huge in the past? Every kid on the block had a Billabong pencil case and an OP tee; in my school, if you had a Billabong wallet, you were cool.
However, those brands faded silently into the background over the years and were never really able to make a comeback in the local market.
On the other hand, there are some old brands that have managed to keep up with the times, and are now making a resurgence. If you want in on the hype, these are the brands to go for right now.
Here are eight apparel brands that have been resurrected by online trendsetters and celebrities:
1.
Champion
Vintage sportswear brand Champion has been manufacturing quality products for athletes for a long time now, ever since 1919. The brand is perhaps best known for its reverse-weave sweatshirt, which is a timeless classic.
With influential figures like Kanye West and Virgil Abloh making comfy sportswear a cool thing to wear, Champion is enjoying unprecedented success in the streetwear scene.
Recent collaborations with brands like Vetements and Supreme has only made Champion more relevant and cooler, way cooler. Nowadays, you can spot a lot of people rocking Champion tees and sweatshirts on Instagram and on the streets.
2. Tommy Hilfiger/ Tommy Jeans
Here is one of the classic American brands that has managed to become relevant again in recent times.
Instagram models and celebs have been wearing tees and sweaters that sport a huge logo of the brand. This has no doubt influenced the masses to start buying Tommy Hilfiger clothes again.
But if that isn’t enough, the brand collaborated with fashion model and icon, Gigi Hadid to release several collections. The Chainsmokers are also ambassadors of the brand.
So, are they cool enough for you yet?
3. Calvin Klein
Famous for its denim, but perhaps even more so, its underwear line. Calvin Klein seems like the go-to choice for underwear in Hollywood.
Justin Bieber and Kendall Jenner are just couple of celebs who’ve endorsed the brand; in fact, the Kardashians and Jenners were just recently enlisted to star in a new Calvin Klein advertisement.
It means something when a brand can make headlines with just underwear; but hey, you can check out the denim too.
4. GUESS
Founded in 1981 and headquartered in Los Angeles, GUESS was a brand that tried to make a name for itself in denim. Looking at the brand’s denim jacket now, I think it’s fair to say that the company’s doing well in this department.
GUESS has Jennifer Lopez to help market the brand, and the company also made waves with the recent collaboration with rapper A$AP Rocky. In the streetwear scene, A$AP Rocky is pretty influential; hypebeasts love him.
So I guess that GUESS is back in the game now.
5. FILA
This is a sporting brand that dates back to 1911 in a small town in Italy. Of course, it doesn’t have the recognition that’s comparable to Nike and Adidas, but this brand is popping up more and more often on Instagram feeds these days.
One of the main factors is probably because of the chunky “dad shoe” trend, and FILA has one of the sickest chunky sneakers out there: the FILA Disruptor.
I’ve seen that shoe appear on the Hypebae Instagram page one too many times, and paired with the shoe would be some vintage FILA clothing.
Vintage is definitely cool right now.
6. PUMA
Fun fact: did you know that the founders of Adidas and PUMA are brothers? So if Adidas is all in on the hype, what makes you think PUMA won’t follow suit?
But of course, the sportswear fashion market is a tough one to compete in, and so PUMA has often taken a backseat to the giants like Nike and Adidas. That doesn’t mean the brand can’t appeal to the public though.
Rihanna has her own Fenty x PUMA line, and with Selena Gomez and The Weeknd as the brand’s ambassadors, PUMA is rolling out great designs in its apparel and footwear.
Not to mention, Selena has an insane following on Instagram, with over 130 million followers. Talk about being influential.
7. Kappa
Who remembers this one from back in the day? I remember being in primary school and kids all around me wore white Kappa shoes to school and carried Kappa backpacks.
The brand faded into the dark for a bit, but seems to be appearing online again. Loads of Instagram models have been spotted wearing Kappa, especially the pants with the logo draped along the seams.
Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner have also worn Kappa jackets out in public, which no doubt brought some attention to the brand.
8. Reebok
Remember how I said that the sportswear market is a tough one to compete in? Reebok was bought over by Adidas and now operates as a subsidiary of Adidas; but Reebok is still a brand on its own and the company is making good strides.
If you can’t already tell, the trend now is going towards the vintage look, and Reebok knows that. The brand focuses on the classics, like the Reebok Classic Leather sneakers and the Classics Sweatshirts.
Then of course, a celebrity needs to be associated with the brand. Pop star Ariana Grande is now the brand ambassador for Reebok and with her influence, the only way to go is up.
— —
Celebrities are constantly influencing us into buying and wearing certain things that we never thought we would like. Some may critique that you’re a sheep for following their style, but don’t we all borrow influences from other people?
But in any case, these eight brands above are reaping the benefits from the exposure through celebrities. No one knows how long the brands can stay in the game, but as long as the designs are consistently good, people will take notice.
In the meantime, maybe I should go dig for a Champion tee in a thrift store somewhere…

Ah, this wildness and brilliance of the “golden 20s” – kilometers of pearl threads and kilograms of feathers and fur, which is soaked through with martini and tobacco! This elegance and sexuality of the 30s. The femininity of the 50s, the euphoria and serenity of the 80s!
Every girl at least once, and even wanted to be reincarnated as a lady of a completely different era. Perhaps you wanted to wear flared jeans, a wide-brimmed hat, a white linen shirt, and dance barefoot on the edge of the forest. Or, in a fit of fun, you decided to throw a boa on your shoulders, shower yourself with diamonds and listen to jazz with a languid look in the company of a glass of martini all night long. Retro in clothes is a journey into the past, light nostalgia and a great variety of different images.
The word “retro” is of Latin origin and literally means “back”. Retro style clothing is vintage, rarity … call it whatever you like, but one thing remains unchanged – this is the clothes that were at the peak of popularity and personified the fashion of different years.
If you are tired of all these fashion trends, you are tired of chasing trends and spending money on something that will soon cease to be relevant – pay attention to the retro style.
Retro Style: Women’s Clothing
A few tips:
- Start collecting a retro look with small details: jewelry, accessories, shoes. Thanks to this, you can feel the era you have chosen and understand how to harmoniously combine retro style with modern fashion trends.
- Remember, before you dress retro, you need to explore the era you are going to dress up in. Knowledge will not only help you create the closest ensemble to that time, but also feel more confident.
- You should not put on absolutely all the things that were fashionable in any decade, as some elements can ruin your figure.Let’s say mother nature rewarded you with wide shoulders, and then you dressed up a chic (who can argue?) Purple jacket in the style of the 80s with massive foam shoulder pads. Have you presented a picture?
- Retro style in a woman’s clothes is not only about clothes and accessories. To make your look complete, do the appropriate hairstyle and makeup.
Retro dresses
The feminine image is, first of all, dresses. Retro style has a considerable number of successful options, because in the entire history of fashion, various couturiers have literally “invented” simply ingenious styles. So what should a real retro girl wear?
Little black dress . The genius of this outfit lies in its amazing simplicity and elementality of the idea itself. This is a laconic form, versatility, relevance in almost any situation, laconic form. This graceful, modest and feminine dress can also be attributed to an elegant style of dress, in which every woman will look just perfect.
Dress a la “Sack Line”. This dress was invented in the distant twenties. And almost all dresses of that decade were characterized by the absence of a waistline in a cut. To be more precise, it was, though flat and understated, so the bodice of the dress visually seems to be longer.
Dress a la Marilyn Monroe . The photo, where the incomparable Merlin Monroe in a cream fluttering dress, can be considered a cult one. And the style of the dress can be called phenomenal. This dress looks luxurious and impressive, and on any girl. This is perhaps the most successful retro style.
Dress with American armhole and stand-up collar . And this dress came to us from the 50s. The style of this outfit is very simple – it often fits well to the figure, has a long or medium length, with an American armhole and a stand-up collar or a collar that wraps around the neck.
Short trapeze dress . This “revolutionary” dress will appeal to mini lovers. Why revolutionary? Yes, because it was created by the English fashion designer Mary Quant at a time when the world did not even suspect that dresses were short.Buying such a dress, every fashionista of that time, at the same time, acquired a real weapon against men.
In addition to the shocking length, this style was accompanied by an incredible simplicity both in cut and in details.
Retro jewelry
For your vintage look to look flawless, you just need to pay special attention to retro style jewelry. What kind of jewelry was preferred by women of fashion of different decades?
- 20th.Massive necklaces and earrings, wide necklace-collars with stones and, of course, pearls!
- 30th. Retro head jewelry with feathers and stones, endless pearl strands.
- 40th. Fashion returned to modesty: neat brooches and earrings with stones were the ultimate dream of a woman of that era.
- 50th. And again pearls and massive earrings are in fashion.
- 60s Retro jewelry from that decade looked like Chinese toys – everything is bright and plastic.
- 70th.Gold and fur.
Retro style men’s clothing
Fashion is known to be cyclical. And now, almost every trend in men’s fashion refers to the retro style.
- Stylish look is the most popular retro style in men’s clothing. Surely you watched the Russian film of the same name, where the atmosphere of the dandy era is very accurately conveyed. Colorful fabrics, unusual cut, rock and roll notes. It is quite simple to recreate this style: you just need to put on a bright check suit with a contrasting shirt in color.
- The further in time – the brighter and more pretentious colors and more decorative elements. For example, in the 1920s, a perfectly fitting three-piece suit in tight shades was enough, but already in the 60s the images of men became more flashy.
- The most advantageous, in our opinion, retro look for a man is the Harvard style. Wonderful shoes and classic suits with polo shirts – these retro clothes are the most “masculine” and are relevant to this day.

Savile Row: how to sew further? | Robb Report Magazine
Handmade suit from Cad & The Dandy atelier in the making
A year ago, deciding to walk along the fashionable London Savile Row, you would have seen it in all the splendor of the suite – the lines of supercars on both sides, elegant shop windows and a crowd of smartly dressed dandies with bulky bags. But once you rewind the tape, it will all disappear. Now that the UK is beginning to gradually emerge from its quarantine stupor, Savile Row looks more like a quiet street on the outskirts of the city than a trade artery with an international name.
The oldest atelier Henry Poole opened its doors more than two centuries ago, in 1806, and since then Savile Row has become a guiding star for all connoisseurs of a tailored men’s suit. Today, the sturdy buildings of the Georgian era house more than 15 world-class sewing companies that manually produce unique clothes. Most tailor-made suits cost between $ 5,000 and $ 6,000, require three fittings and about 80 hours of manual labor from five different specialists. This is a time-tested process, the epitome of the old school. Choosing an atelier means entering into a personal relationship with people who are able to create one-of-a-kind clothing that will last a lifetime.
Campbell Carey, Creative Director and Head Tailor, Huntsman
But in the last year and a half, the Savile Row masters have encountered unexpected difficulties. At first (and this was even before the current fashion for a dress shirt and pajama pants) there was a serious relaxation in the office dress code, mainly from financiers and lawyers. The soft, deconstructed Italian cut also poses a threat to traditional battle suits from English tailors with their love of padding on the shoulders and chest. Aside from these “cultural shifts”, in 2019 everyone was concerned about the impact of Brexit on the UK luxury industry and its competitiveness in the European market.
However, despite all these threats, things even went uphill: most of the Savile Row ateliers recorded sales growth in early 2020. And then COVID-19 dealt its blow – forced everyone to close for three months and cut off from foreign consumers, who made up 80% of the clientele.
View of London Savile Row
“The influx of tourists, especially from the United States, has been critical to sustaining our industry since the 1960s,” says William Skinner, managing director of Dege & Skinner and chairman of the Savile Row Tailoring Association, the official trade organization for tailor-made men’s suits. – The clientele of the leading ateliers is about 40% American, 30% Europeans and 20% British. The remaining 10% comes from the Middle East and Asia. Now everyone is most worried about the question of when the American border will open and our closed fashion shows will resume. ” With restrictions on international traffic likely to remain until the end of the year (foreigners visiting the UK now have to self-isolate for two weeks), Savile Row faced a choice as simple as it was daunting – to quickly adapt or perish.
At first, many ateliers switched to communicating with foreign clients via video communication, began to send out samples of fabrics to keep themselves interested, and some even sent suits overseas for fitting. But it is hardly possible with the help of such measures to make up for the serious losses that most manufacturers have suffered. Founded in 2008 by James Slater and Ian Meyers Cad & The Dandy is one of the youngest and largest firms in Savile Row. And one of the hardest hit. “According to my calculations, this year we will fall by 50%,” says Slater. “We lost about £ 1.75 million during the lockdown alone.”
Drake’s
flagship store interior
A similar picture is observed in other ateliers. The die-hard Henry Poole , where the tuxedo was invented, is 70% dependent on overseas private fashion shows. A couple of doors down, at Richard Anderson , 20% of the business is run by Americans. And wherever you go on Savile Row, up or down, you will hear all the same lamentations about the closing of the borders.
The big question is, how can Savile Row get customers when travel is difficult at best and impossible at worst? The most obvious answer is going online, but many doubt that firms accustomed to such close interaction with the client, which is more like a checkup with a home doctor, can go online.
“We use high technology wherever possible,” says Skinner.“Some buyers like this innovation, while others prefer a more traditional approach. And of course, it is extremely difficult to maintain the high standards of Savile Row when you sew a suit to order, but the customer is present at the same time remotely. ”But in the studio Cad & The Dandy , which appeared on Savile Row relatively recently, so it often perceived as an apostate from generally accepted rules, chose a different path. The firm already sells some shirts and accessories online, and plans to launch an impressive collection of apparel, made in-house using tailoring technology, by the end of the year.
“We were going to start producing ready-to-wear garments even before the lockdown and are now working on them at an accelerated pace,” says Slater. – The collection will include things that you would not have sewn yourself to order, like a blouson shirt or a safari jacket. And we will expand our online capabilities – we will install webcams in the workshop, we will establish virtual fitting rooms. In the remaining months of 2020, we will prove that we can be much more flexible than some thought. ”
Cad & The Dandy tailor at work
Retail Sales Consultant Ray Klacher understands new realities better than most. When he became commercial director of Gieves & Hawkes in the early 2000s, it was a $ 25 million domestic firm, and by 2012 it had grown into an international brand with $ 125 million in revenue. By that time, Klacher had become Managing Director and developed the company’s strategy for e-commerce, ready-to-wear and global promotion. “I often think that Savile Row is not aware of what he owns,” says Klacher. “This is a closed world, and some companies are afraid to try something new or simply don’t know how to translate their work into digital.”
But it would be a mistake to register all tailors in retrogrades. Tailoring is a niche service for a niche audience, and many firms innovate in their own way. One of the most famous British brands, Huntsman has opened a powerful business in the United States, where a senior tailor works in New York on a full-time basis, which allows the firm to serve overseas customers even with closed borders. After trying two bespoke designs – a suit made entirely in a UK workshop and a suit finished in America – Huntsman decided to move away from making it entirely in-house, unless the customer was willing to pay a significant premium. Now the price of the jacket will start at $ 3950. “Customers continue to be interested in bespoke apparel, but the price is now paying more attention,” says Pierre Lagrange, owner of the Huntsman .
The fact that outsourcing some stages of production in exchange for a price reduction does not bother either old or new customers, it makes it clear that today’s consumer is not fixated on the fact that each stitch on his jacket was made at one specific address. On the other hand, the Savile Row Tailoring Association mandates that all its members are required to sew suits within a radius of 100 meters from this street. But to remain competitive, many tailors will be forced to outsource, as do some prestigious workshops in other parts of the city. For example, Edward Sexton and Whitcomb & Shaftesbury offer bespoke garments using workshops in China and India for some operations. Both of these firms, like Huntsman, are successful in attracting younger buyers and continue to hold the bar high. By the way, Offshore Bespoke from Sexton brings the company half of its orders.

For many firms, today’s difficulties are exacerbated by traditionally high costs. Tailoring a tailor-made suit is expensive (world-class materials and the salaries of top-notch local craftsmen only increase the price), and although the rents on Savile Row are moderate by Mayfair standards, retail space on the first floor costs $ 90,000 a year. up to $ 260,000.The largest homeowner here, Pollen Estate , has worked closely with the Tailors’ Association over the past two years to increase foot traffic on the street. But again, the isolation regime did its dirty work. By mid-summer, 10 premises on the ground floors were in need of new tenants, and several old-time ateliers, including Chester Barrie , were forced to close.
“Our mission is to help as many tenants as possible survive the pandemic,” says Julian Stokes, co-executive of Pollen Estate .”And we’re trying to give the tailors a little breath.” Indeed, homeowners immediately offered their clients a favorable system of deferrals and reduced payments, but this brief respite does not solve a possibly more dangerous problem in the long term: most of the premises on the first floors of Savile Row, according to current legislation, should be used exclusively for the production of clothing or trade in it (ironically, the purpose of this prescription was to preserve the traditional appearance of the street). The ban on the placement of other trade establishments, such as watch shops or art galleries and even bars and restaurants, had unexpected consequences – Savile Row lost the variety that could attract new customers.
Jacket and face mask by Henry Poole & Co.
In general, the street needs new blood. And Pollen Estate took a bold step – it attracted stylist and writer Tom Stubbs, who settled on Savile Row at 31.His task was to attract new brands. Stubbs is perfect for this role. His signature summer look – a bespoke double-breasted jacket over a sleeveless tee – is impeccably modern. Trying to destroy the myth that only mossy retrogrades can be found on Savile Row, Stubbs maintains an Instagram page @therowstance about the most colorful characters that appear on the street. In addition, he persuaded the duo of fashionable tailors Joshua Dobrik and Kimberly Lawton to move to Savile Row for six months. The pair are known for their couture suits, which are more suited to the red carpet than the boardroom. Aesthetically, their style is the complete opposite of the local old school, but that’s what they count on.
There are, of course, young brands that pop up here without effort on the part of Stubbs. First of all, it is Drake’s , an eccentric British brand that is famous for its daring design and opened its flagship store on Savile Row last fall.Drake’s doesn’t tailor to order, but it does the informal, slightly casual blazers and trousers that are all the rage, and this could attract other energetic clothing makers to the streets. Ditto Hackett , which opened a luxury store at 14 Savile Row last November, and Thom Sweeney , which will soon take over an entire building a block away on Old Burlington Street, where to get along and custom-made suits, and modern ready-to-wear.
The presence of new players transforms Savile Row from a fiefdom of an atelier into a whole hypermarket of clothes, where there is everything: from blue blazers to luxury tees. From the point of view of many in the fashion industry, this is a step forward. Jason Basmajian worked for Brioni and Cerruti 1881 , and from 2013 to 2016 he was creative director of Gieves & Hawkes and worked with Klacher to modernize the brand. He is convinced that Savile Row needs to expand its horizons. “We tried to take the Gieves to the next level, keeping the Savile Row identity, but adding internationality and modernity,” explains Basmadzhyan.“There is a huge world outside the street and we wanted Gieves to be more than just a store. Now other brands on the street have taken this path, which cannot but rejoice. ”
Showcase Henry Poole & Co.
In some places completely revolutionary speeches are heard. “At all times, handicraft production has had to be renewed in order to maintain its position. Previously, tailors only sewed by hand, but then a sewing machine appeared, says Dominique Sebag-Montefiore, creative director of Edward Sexton .“Design brands are now starting to invest in technologies like 3D printing or body scanning. But, of course, there is no better place for their application than Savile Row, where the best specialists in tailoring and designing clothes are gathered. I’d love to try out 3D -simulation and artificial intelligence for custom apparel. ”
Even the staunch adherents of the old school started talking about changes, albeit not so radical. In Henry Poole develops a “super light” design that significantly reduces the weight of a traditional suit.“We started to notice that our clients were looking at their wardrobe differently,” says Managing Director Simon Kandy. – I think now we will have to make fewer business suits, because officials and businessmen no longer need to wear them, but they will be willing to pay for loose and light suits to wear in the city. After all, men always want to look elegant when they go to dinner or visit. ”
So all is not lost. Savile Row has many challenges to tackle in 2020 and beyond, but the local tailoring community remains optimistic and continues to work hard to overcome new challenges.“The strength of Savile Row is in its collective spirit,” says Slater. “This street has survived two world wars and the Great Depression, so we plan to stay here for a long time. ”
