How did the Las Vegas Desert Dogs approach the 2022 NLL Expansion Draft. What strategies did they employ to build their inaugural roster. Which key players were selected to form the foundation of the new franchise.
The Birth of a New NLL Franchise: Las Vegas Desert Dogs
The National Lacrosse League (NLL) welcomed its 15th franchise in 2022 with the addition of the Las Vegas Desert Dogs. As part of the league’s expansion efforts, the Desert Dogs were given the opportunity to select players from existing NLL teams through an expansion draft. This pivotal event marked the first step in building the roster for Las Vegas’ inaugural season.
Understanding the 2022 NLL Expansion Draft Rules
The expansion draft followed a structured format to ensure fairness while allowing the new franchise to assemble a competitive team. Here are the key rules that governed the draft:
- The Desert Dogs could select one player from each of the 14 existing NLL teams
- Teams had the option to protect either:
- 5 offensive players, 5 defensive players, and 1 goalie
- 4 offensive players, 7 defensive players, and 1 goalie
- Players on the protected lists were ineligible for selection
- The expansion team was allowed to make trades during the draft
Strategic Moves: Desert Dogs’ Draft Approach
Head coach and general manager Shawn Williams orchestrated the Desert Dogs’ draft strategy. The team’s approach focused on acquiring a mix of established talent and promising young players while also accumulating future draft picks. This balanced strategy aimed to build a competitive roster for the present while securing assets for long-term success.
Key Trades and Acquisitions
One of the most significant moves made by the Desert Dogs during the draft was a multi-player trade with the Rochester Knighthawks. This deal showcased Williams’ commitment to building for the future:
- Acquired: Charlie Bertrand, four future draft picks
- Traded away: Connor Fields, Riley Hutchcraft, 2022 first-round pick
This trade exemplifies the Desert Dogs’ strategy of balancing immediate roster needs with long-term asset accumulation. By the end of the draft, Williams had acquired a total of seven future NLL Entry Draft picks, providing the franchise with valuable resources for continued roster development.
Building the Foundation: Notable Player Selections
The Desert Dogs used their 14 picks to select a diverse group of players across various positions. Some of the standout selections include:
Offensive Firepower
- Marshal King (Forward, Calgary Roughnecks)
- Ty Thompson (Forward, New York Riptide)
- Charlie Bertrand (Forward, Rochester Knighthawks)
Defensive Stalwarts
- Jackson Nishimura (Defense, Albany FireWolves)
- James Barclay (Defense, Halifax Thunderbirds)
- Tyson Roe (Defense, Vancouver Warriors)
Goaltending
- Landon Kells (Goalie, Calgary Roughnecks)
This diverse group of players represents a solid foundation for the Desert Dogs’ inaugural roster, blending experienced veterans with promising young talent.
The Impact of the Expansion Draft on Existing NLL Teams
While the expansion draft was a crucial opportunity for the Desert Dogs, it also presented challenges for existing NLL franchises. Each team was forced to make difficult decisions about which players to protect and which to expose to the draft.
Case Study: Philadelphia Wings
The Philadelphia Wings, like other teams, had to carefully consider their protected list. They opted for Option A, protecting:
- 5 offensive players
- 5 defensive players
- 1 goalie
This decision ultimately led to the Desert Dogs selecting Jackson Suboch, a defenseman, from the Wings’ unprotected list. The loss of Suboch demonstrates the difficult choices teams face in balancing roster protection with the risk of losing valuable players.
Looking Ahead: Next Steps for the Desert Dogs
While the expansion draft marked a significant milestone for the Las Vegas Desert Dogs, it was just the beginning of their roster-building process. The franchise will continue to shape its inaugural team through several avenues:
- Free agency signings (beginning August 1, 2022)
- Participation in the 2022 NLL Entry Draft
- Potential trades with other NLL teams
These additional opportunities will allow the Desert Dogs to further refine their roster and address any remaining needs before their first season begins.
The Significance of the Expansion Draft for the NLL
The addition of the Las Vegas Desert Dogs and the expansion draft process represent important steps in the growth and development of the National Lacrosse League. This expansion serves multiple purposes for the league:
- Increases the NLL’s geographic footprint
- Brings professional lacrosse to a new market
- Creates new opportunities for players
- Generates excitement and interest in the sport
As the Desert Dogs prepare for their inaugural season, the expansion draft has laid the groundwork for what promises to be an exciting new chapter in NLL history.
Fan Engagement and Building a New Lacrosse Community
The expansion draft not only serves as a crucial step in building the Desert Dogs’ roster but also plays a significant role in generating excitement and engagement among potential fans in Las Vegas. How can a new franchise leverage the draft to build a strong fan base?
- Hosting draft parties or viewing events
- Creating content introducing selected players to the community
- Launching social media campaigns to build anticipation
- Offering season ticket packages or promotions tied to the draft
By involving fans in the team-building process from the very beginning, the Desert Dogs can lay the foundation for a passionate and dedicated lacrosse community in Las Vegas.
Season Ticket Sales and Fan Outreach
The Desert Dogs have already begun capitalizing on the excitement surrounding their entry into the NLL. The team’s website, lasvegasdesertdogs.com, offers fans the opportunity to purchase season tickets and stay informed about the franchise’s development. This proactive approach to fan engagement is crucial for building a strong support base in a new market.
Challenges and Opportunities for an Expansion Franchise
As the Las Vegas Desert Dogs embark on their journey as an NLL expansion team, they face both unique challenges and exciting opportunities. What are some of the key factors that will influence their success in the coming seasons?
Challenges:
- Building team chemistry with a roster of players from different organizations
- Establishing a winning culture from scratch
- Competing against established franchises with existing systems and strategies
- Marketing the team and sport in a new market with diverse entertainment options
Opportunities:
- Shaping the franchise’s identity and culture without preexisting constraints
- Leveraging the excitement of being a new team to attract fans and sponsors
- Utilizing the expansion draft and future picks to build a competitive roster quickly
- Tapping into the growing popularity of lacrosse in North America
The success of the Desert Dogs will depend on how effectively they navigate these challenges while capitalizing on the unique opportunities presented by their expansion status.
The Role of Coaching and Management in an Expansion Team’s Success
The importance of strong leadership cannot be overstated when it comes to building an expansion franchise from the ground up. Head coach and general manager Shawn Williams plays a pivotal role in shaping the Desert Dogs’ future. How does his dual role impact the team’s development?
- Ability to align roster construction with coaching philosophy
- Streamlined decision-making process
- Consistent vision from front office to on-field strategy
- Potential challenges in balancing both responsibilities
Williams’ experience and approach to team-building will be crucial factors in the Desert Dogs’ early seasons as they establish themselves in the NLL.
Player Development and Team Identity
One of the key challenges for any expansion team is forging a strong team identity and developing players within their system. The Desert Dogs have the opportunity to build this identity from scratch, incorporating elements that reflect both the franchise’s vision and the unique character of Las Vegas.
Some strategies the coaching staff might employ include:
- Implementing a distinctive playing style that sets the team apart
- Fostering a strong team culture that attracts free agents and retains talent
- Developing young players through targeted training and mentorship programs
- Creating a connection between the team’s identity and the Las Vegas community
By focusing on these areas, the Desert Dogs can lay the groundwork for long-term success both on and off the field.
The Economic Impact of an NLL Expansion Team
The addition of the Las Vegas Desert Dogs to the NLL has potential economic implications for both the league and the local community. How might this expansion contribute to economic growth and development?
League-wide Benefits:
- Increased revenue from expansion fees
- New market for league-wide sponsorships and broadcast deals
- Potential for increased interest in the sport, leading to growth in other markets
Local Economic Impact:
- Job creation (team staff, arena workers, etc.)
- Increased tourism and visitor spending on game days
- Potential for community development initiatives led by the team
- Boost to local businesses, particularly in the hospitality and entertainment sectors
While the full economic impact may take time to materialize, the addition of a professional sports franchise can provide significant benefits to both the league and the local economy.
The Future of the NLL: Expansion and Growth
The successful expansion to Las Vegas raises questions about the future growth of the National Lacrosse League. What potential avenues for expansion might the league explore in the coming years?
- Further expansion into major U.S. markets without NLL representation
- Potential for international expansion, particularly in Canada
- Exploration of non-traditional markets with growing interest in lacrosse
- Partnerships with existing sports franchises or ownership groups
As the NLL continues to grow, the expansion process refined with the Las Vegas Desert Dogs could serve as a model for future franchises, ensuring the league’s sustainable growth and increasing competitiveness.
The Role of Media and Technology
In an era of rapidly evolving media consumption habits, how can the NLL and its new franchises leverage technology to grow their fan base and increase engagement?
- Expanding streaming options to reach cord-cutting audiences
- Utilizing social media platforms for behind-the-scenes content and player access
- Exploring virtual and augmented reality experiences for fans
- Developing mobile apps for enhanced in-stadium and at-home viewing experiences
By embracing new technologies and media strategies, the Desert Dogs and the NLL as a whole can position themselves for growth in an increasingly digital sports landscape.

2022 NLL Expansion Draft Preview
July 1, 2022
By: Dara Doft
On July 7th, the Las Vegas Desert Dogs will be taking one step closer to hitting the floor as the NLL’s 15th franchise by making their selections in the 2022 NLL Expansion Draft. Vegas will be selecting one player from each of the other 14 teams’ unprotected lists to create their inaugural roster. Each NLL team has created and submitted a Protected List comprised of players that the Desert Dogs are unable to select.
Teams had two options when creating their protected lists: Option A, which was to protect five offensive players, five defensive players and one goalie, or Option B, which was to protect four offensive players, seven defensive players and one goalie.
Wings General Manager & Head Coach Paul Day and Assistant General Manager Landon Miller ultimately decided to go with Option A and submitted the following as their protected roster:
Offensive players: Matt Rambo, Kyle Jackson, Blaze Riorden, Ben McIntosh, Sam LeClair
Defensive players: Kiel Matisz, Trevor Baptiste, Alex Pace, Steph Charbonneau, Ryan Wagner
Goalie: Zach Higgins
The rest of the Wings roster will be unprotected and can be selected by the Desert Dogs. Understandably, fans were shocked to see some veterans like Kevin Crowley, Corey Small, Cory Vitarelli, and Ian Llord left unprotected. With that in mind, it’s worth noting that each of these players satisfy two significant bits of criteria.
As Unrestricted Free Agents aged 34 or older by 12/31/2022, these players have full autonomy of where they choose to play this coming season. What this means in terms of the expansion draft is that the Wings are taking a calculated risk with each of them. Should Las Vegas select one of the players, they only have until August 1 of this summer to agree to terms with the selected player, which is the start of the free agency signing period. So while one or more of these players may still be in the Wings’ plans for next season, the team is taking a calculated risk that even if one of these players is selected, he would choose to test the market before deciding on where to play next season. This also raises the risk for the Desert Dogs who could potentially waste a valuable selection on a player who ultimately chooses to play elsewhere.
“Determining protected rosters is always challenging especially with a locker room as close as ours,” said Wings Head Coach and General Manager Paul Day. “These decisions are never easy, however, expansion is great for the league and entering the Las Vegas market is exciting for all of us. Regardless of who is selected, we are excited to construct our roster as we look to build on last season’s success.”
Now for my prediction: I expect the Desert Dogs to take a more direct approach and select a player who already under contract, or doesn’t have the negotiating power that some older veteran players have. This way the player they select would be more likely to see the floor come December. Notable unprotected Wings that fall in this category include Alex Crepinsek, John Ranagan, Jackson Suboch, or perhaps even players who hasn’t seen the floor yet like Hunter Lemieux. But whatever happens, I expect the Wings to be ready to hit the ground running at the start of the 2022-2023 season.
Dentons Launches NextLaw Labs Project and Launches Business Accelerator
May 22, 2015 – Dentons, an international law firm, announces the launch of NextLaw Labs (NLL), an international innovation platform for developing, applying and investing in new technologies that will bring the practice of law to a new level.
“We are committed to transforming the legal industry, modernizing and improving the quality of legal services, beyond becoming the world’s largest law firm,” said Dentons Global Chairman Joe Andrew.
The goal of the NextLaw Labs project is the development of certain technologies, which should fundamentally change the legal practice in terms of improving the level of customer service and expanding the range of services provided to clients. Dentons will be the main partner and investor of the project, and will also test new services in practice.
The new project will be led by Dan Jansen, Chief Executive Officer of NextLaw Labs, who has unique business and professional service experience. Mr. Jansen has helped design, finance, develop and sell distressed businesses in a variety of areas including media, financial services and online recruitment (e-recruitment). In addition, he has nearly twenty years of experience in the professional services industry, including as head of the Boston Consulting Group’s global media practice and as a start-up consultant for Arthur Young & Company.
“The NextLaw Labs project aims to develop the legal services industry,” said Dan Jansen. “Ideas and inspiration can come from anywhere, but only an accelerator, backed by the world’s largest law firm, can help bring vision to perfection, while our partnerships with leading startups, leading scientists and other technology providers will help bring it to life.”
“Searching for new technologies to transform the legal industry and redefine the way we do business is what NextLaw Labs is all about,” explained Jansen. “We are looking for startups, entrepreneurs, VCs, established vendors – anyone who wants to join our innovation ecosystem and work with us to create and bring new products and services to market, whether through direct investment in existing companies or building our own NLL package. ”
“The legal industry is entering an era of tremendous change and innovation,” said Professor William D. Henderson of the Maurer School of Law at Indiana University, recently named the most influential figure in legal education by National Jurist magazine. Along with other professors and corporate lawyers, he will serve on the NextLaw Labs advisory board. “NextLaw Labs has a unique structure that will put Dentons lawyers ahead of the curve.”
Professor Daniel Martin Katz of the Chicago-Kent College of Law at the Illinois Institute of Technology, who will also sit on the NextLaw Labs Advisory Board, said, “This is a truly exciting moment for the entire legal industry, as this project will allow Dentons to apply existing and future innovative technologies in the legal field to its practice.”
NextLaw Labs celebrates Dentons’ commitment to improving the way we approach our customers through the use of new technologies that expand our range of customer support and enable us to provide better service while improving data privacy and security.
VASKhNIL Novosibirsk – Felixx
City expansion site is located in the southwest of Novosibirsk. This project creates a cozy urban neighborhood surrounded by diverse agricultural land, combining low-rise buildings with more intimate landscapes and public spaces. This approach contrasts with standard high-rise buildings in Russia, which form a living environment that is directly connected to the automotive infrastructure.
Existing forests are preserved and made available to future residents. The green ring encircles the entire area and creates an active circular landscape. The park brings together a number of large public venues for public events and recreational areas along the cycling and walking paths. Green linear parks form different areas with small playgrounds and sports facilities. All buildings are located around common courtyards, thus creating a public and private open space.
This site is part of the former test site of the Research Institute of Agriculture of VASKhNIL. Its agricultural history is a source of inspiration for the organization of the main public spaces.
The Green Ring becomes natural and natural, and the Linear Parks become a cultivated area. Yards are designed as production sites.
“In vineyards, roses are planted between beds to attract insects that can harm the vines. Preferring rose bushes to vines, they warn the farmer of impending danger. These ‘signal plants’ add both a romantic and practical element to the vineyards.”
For the functional organization of gardens, a variety of tools are used in the form of hedges, paths and flower beds. These elements are also used for other purposes. As an unexpected “special bearer of identity”, the principle of “signal plants” is introduced every quarter. Just like roses in vineyards, they combine practical significance with complemented spatial identity. Each yard is equipped with an original playground in the shape of a butterfly.
