The Evolution of Nike Mercurial: A Game-Changing Soccer Shoe
Nike Mercurial soccer shoes have become synonymous with speed, agility, and precision on the soccer field. These innovative cleats have revolutionized the game, offering players a lightweight and lethal advantage over their opponents. But how did the Mercurial line come to dominate the world of soccer footwear?
The Mercurial journey began in 1998 with the launch of the first Nike Mercurial. Designed for Brazilian striker Ronaldo, the shoe aimed to create a perfect blend of speed and control. Over the years, Nike has continuously refined and improved the Mercurial line, incorporating cutting-edge technologies and materials to enhance performance.
Key Milestones in Mercurial History
- 1998: Introduction of the first Nike Mercurial
- 2002: Launch of the Mercurial Vapor, featuring a more streamlined design
- 2008: Introduction of the Mercurial Superfly with Flywire technology
- 2014: Release of the Mercurial Superfly IV with Flyknit upper
- 2018: Launch of the Mercurial 360, the first laceless Mercurial
Nike Mercurial Technology: Engineered for Speed and Precision
What makes Nike Mercurial soccer shoes stand out from the competition? The answer lies in their innovative design and advanced technologies. Nike has invested heavily in research and development to create a shoe that maximizes a player’s potential on the field.
Key Technological Features
- Flyknit Upper: Provides a sock-like fit and enhanced ball control
- NikeGrip Technology: Reduces foot slippage inside the boot
- All Conditions Control (ACC): Ensures consistent performance in wet and dry conditions
- Aerotrak Zone: Enhances traction and acceleration
- Nike Anti-Clog Traction: Prevents mud from clinging to the soleplate
These technologies work in harmony to create a boot that is not only incredibly light but also offers superior traction, comfort, and ball control. The result is a shoe that allows players to perform at their highest level, regardless of playing conditions.
Mercurial Superfly vs. Mercurial Vapor: Choosing the Right Fit
When it comes to Nike Mercurial soccer shoes, players have two main options: the Superfly and the Vapor. While both are designed for speed and agility, they have distinct differences that cater to different player preferences.
Mercurial Superfly
The Superfly features a high-cut collar that extends above the ankle, providing added support and a more secure fit. This design is ideal for players who prefer a sock-like feel and enhanced stability around the ankle area.
Mercurial Vapor
The Vapor, on the other hand, has a traditional low-cut design. This option is preferred by players who want more freedom of movement around the ankle and a lighter overall feel.
Both models share the same advanced technologies in the upper and soleplate, ensuring that players get the full benefits of the Mercurial line regardless of their collar preference.
Top Players Who Wear Nike Mercurial Soccer Shoes
The Nike Mercurial line has been embraced by some of the world’s most talented soccer players. These athletes not only endorse the product but rely on its performance-enhancing features to excel on the field.

Nike Zoom Mercurial 2022 Cleats
ShoesComment on Nike Zoom Mercurial 2022 Cleats
New Mercuri 2022 al, the Superfly 9 and Vapor 15 boots feature Zoom Air technology. Long used in running shoes, air inserts now help football players to be even faster and more dynamic on the field.
Designed from the ground up for modern football. The Nike Air Zoom Mercurial features a 3/4-length Zoom Air unit. It is located directly inside the plate in the sole. This brings the foot closer to the ground for a more pronounced feel of sharp, propulsive energy return. The air cushion has grooves for flexibility and natural foot movement. Thanks to this, the boots meet the modern requirements of dynamic football.
The boot uses a new version of the Vaporposite material on the upper. The Vaporposite+ upper combines chevron mesh for improved traction with a Flyknit lining to help control the ball at high speeds. The lining is made softer, but at the same time it tightly wraps around the foot. This provides a more natural feel for the ball when shooting, dribbling and passing.

Superfly version with high collar in Flyknit fabric. The collar wraps the ankle with soft stretch fabric for a secure fit. The redesigned boot improves the fit to better mimic the shape of the foot. To do this, Nike specialists conducted tests on hundreds of athletes. As a result, the toe has become more contoured, and the heel is fixed more securely.

The Air Zoom Mercurial has another new addition: the Tri-Star studs. The new outsole design helps players move both laterally and lengthwise for faster play in all directions. Heel studs provide traction and stability when braking. Central toe studs provide traction for explosive launches. The new stud pattern is available on all models of men’s, women’s and children’s boots.

Kylian Mbappé
Mercurial’s current brand ambassador is Kylian Mbappe. Here’s what he says about the new Zoom Air boots:
“As a Mercurial athlete, I always think about speed. I want to be faster than my opponent. What excited me the most was that this technology is revolutionary. Air is what will really put Mercurial athletes in the best conditions to perform.”
Kylian Mbappe
Most of the 2022 Mercurial models, including the Academy and Club editions, are made with at least 20% recycled materials by weight. Increasing the use of sustainable materials across the entire lineup is a significant step for Nike to achieve its 2025 sustainability goals.

Nike Air Zoom technology is back in football in 2022. This is a great occasion to look back and remember the whole history of this development, which had a great impact on the sports industry, including football.
Contents:
Introduction
In essence, the Nike Air Zoom is the most recognizable of all Nike technologies. This cushioning system consists of compressed air in a stiff yet flexible pouch that provides a lightweight bounce. With each step, pressure is applied to the Air units, which is absorbed, and in return, energy is released, which you feel like light cushioning.
Air technology dates back to 1979. Since then, Nike has been constantly developing and improving it. Later, in the mid-90s, Air Zoom appears as one of the most important evolutionary steps in the development of this development. Since 1996, it has been introduced into the company’s football products. In addition to football boots, it is also being introduced into American football, basketball, running and tennis shoes.
We are interested in how this depreciation took root in football. After all, at one time it was actively used, and then they forgot about it for a long time. And now we see the return of Air Zoom to the market. It was a sign for us that it’s time to remind you of the history of the legendary boots based on this technology.
Nike Air Rio Zoom (1996)
This model was released shortly after the Nike Tiempo boots were actually noticed after the 1994 World Cup. The Air Rio Zoom failed to really catch on at the time. They have been overshadowed by the popularity of other fairly innovative boots released by Nike’s competitors.
However, this was a study of possibilities. It marked the beginning of a long journey. These boots combine the soft C-leather upper and the best qualities of the Tiempo line with new technologies. A great start, which will gain popularity a little later.
Nike Air GX (1997)
Nike’s Montebelluna factory was opened in 1996 and its first football boot, Air GX , debuted the following year. Not only did they come with a Zoom Air unit in the sole, they were also among the first to use a color other than black. That extra red or blue effect, along with that metallic Swoosh logo and wavy quilted stitching, got a lot of people excited. The
Nike Air GX set the brand’s future direction. Remembering this model, Robbie Fowler pops up in memory at the peak of his form. He really loved these boots.
Nike Air Zoom Italia (1998)
Then came the Nike Air Zoom Italia in 1998. And, looking back, you can realize that the worst time for the debut of these boots was hard to find. The fact is that in the same year the world saw the first Mercurial boots that adorned Ronaldo’s feet at the World Cup.
As you may have guessed, all eyes were on the Brazilian and his exploits in France, and the Air Zoom Italia has become another forgotten relic in the brand’s quest to bring the Nike Air Zoom to football.
Nike Air Zoom Brasilia (2000)
The transition to the new millennium has taken place. The world saw a new series of boots that really differed only in name and color scheme. The Nike Zoom Air International , Air Zoom Brasilia and Brasilia II entered the market. All of them were released in 2000.
Today it will be difficult to find someone who remembers them. And all because they could not displace the main pair of Tiempo and Mercurial in the Nike line. Instead, they simply vanished into relative obscurity.
Nike Air Zoom Total 90 I (2000)
Then something revolutionary happened. The brand has moved away from the mold that the last five models were created from. It was 2000 and it was time for Air Zoom Total 90 I . It was a fresh design that didn’t follow in the footsteps of Tiempo or Mercurial. And, of course, it had a Nike Air Zoom unit in the heel.
It also featured off-center lacing and one of the most memorable television commercials featuring Francesco Totti, Edgar Davids and Lilian Thuram.
Nike Air Zoom Mercurial (2001)
Having failed to outshine Mercurial or Tiempo in their first five attempts, the obvious move for the brand was to incorporate Nike Air Zoom technology into one of the two silhouettes. It just so happens that it was Mercurial that got the new cushioning.
The Nike Air Zoom Mercurial was released in 2001 and features a full synthetic upper with a TPU outsole. And then there was Nike’s first mixed sole, which they called the VT for Variable Turf. The studs were also unique in their triangular shape and had a special tool to remove them. And, of course, the boots were equipped with a full-length Zoom Air unit.
Nike Air Zoom T90 II (2002)
Five different colorways, two years after the original’s launch, we have the Air Zoom T90 II and possibly the pinnacle of the series. Having played a big role in the 2002 World Cup, these boots were simply iconic. Actually, like the marketing campaign that accompanied them. The
Nike Air Zoom T90 II was lightweight and made from soft KNG-100 G synthetic material. The upper was coated with Nike First Touch for improved ball control. Originally released in a black/white/red colorway, the boot has had eight different colorways throughout its existence.
Nike Air Zoom T90 III (2004)
In 2004 the third generation appeared – Air Zoom T90 III . The iconic T90 logo was displayed on the instep and the tongue crease was gone. A new heel counter with an outer contour provided additional protection and was specifically designed to reduce the risk of injury to the Achilles tendon.
A unique phylon was used in the midsole to help reduce stud pressure and increase comfort. Also noteworthy are specially designed Nike studs that have been added to the outsole to increase traction. These were boots for a new generation of players, including Rooney, Torres and Totti.
Nike Air Tiempo Legend (2005)
2005 brought a radical rethinking of the Tiempo line with the launch of the Nike Air Tiempo Legend . It was an important moment in the history of the silhouette and perhaps the most visible testament to its versatility and ability to adapt to the demands of a changing game.
All of a sudden, it had a more modern, sleek look that was in line with other boots on the market. And yes, the new design partially repeated the Mercurial released in the same year. Along with visual effects, improved elements appeared. Note the mesh tongue for better ventilation and, of course, the Zoom Air outsole for more heel support.
Air Zoom Total 90 Supremacy (2006)
Only minor changes were made to the technology of the boot, and the aesthetic was modified by Wayne Rooney. There is nothing more to say about this model. Unless it has become brighter in terms of the colors used.
Nike Zoom Tiempo Ronaldinho 10R (2006)
The combination of T90 and Tiempo continued into 2006. Ronaldinho, as a brand ambassador, received a special personalized version 9 at the end of the same year. 0016 Nike Zoom Tiempo Ronaldinho 10R . It was Nike’s first signature line created exclusively for one of its football stars. However, the 10R Tiempo wasn’t just made for Ronaldinho. The Brazilian also helped create a modified model that came with Zoom Air on a fiberglass outsole.
Nike T90 Laser I (2007)
In 2007, the brand made the next big revolution in the Total 90 series, with the release of the T90 Laser I . Known as the cleats for maximum precision and powerful shots, they were emblazoned with the brand’s signature “shield” over the lacing. By the way, here the lacing again took center stage.
The Zoom Air unit has been repositioned in the heel for comfort. It was one of the most successful models of the line, and is still considered by many to be an icon of the boot. And some consider her the best model of the 2000s.
Nike Air Zoom Tiempo Legend II (2008)
This was the last Tiempo to feature this cushioning technology. The boot features a redesigned Zoom Air heel unit for responsive cushioning and reinforced heel protection.
Nike Air Zoom Mercurial (2020)
And then Zoom Air disappeared from football for 12 years. The technology made a brief appearance in the Nike Air Zoom Mercurial Concept in 2020. Her appearance only whetted the appetite, but it was all in vain…
The concept teased us all, showing that it was built around a full size Zoom airbag. To do this, the internal chassis of the boots was moved to the plate. We left only the insole between the foot and the Zoom cushion for maximum effect. It was more like the Zoom Air we’ve seen in other sports. It was used for movement, not just heel cushioning.
Nike Mercurial Air Zoom Ultra SE (2022)
Two years later, the Nike Mercurial Air Zoom Ultra SE was released, fulfilling all the promises of the concept boot. But it was still embarrassing that they were released in a limited edition.
