The Evolution of Nike Pro Compression Shorts
Nike Pro Compression Shorts have become a staple in many athletes’ wardrobes. These high-performance garments have evolved significantly since their introduction, incorporating cutting-edge technology and design features to enhance athletic performance. But what exactly makes these shorts so popular among athletes and fitness enthusiasts?
Nike Pro Compression Shorts are designed to provide a snug, supportive fit that helps reduce muscle fatigue and improve circulation during intense physical activities. They are made from moisture-wicking materials that keep the wearer cool and dry, even during the most strenuous workouts. The compression technology also helps to minimize muscle oscillation, potentially reducing the risk of injury and improving overall performance.
Key Features of Nike Pro Compression Shorts
- Dri-FIT technology for moisture management
- Four-way stretch fabric for enhanced mobility
- Flatlock seams to reduce chafing
- Wide, elastic waistband for a secure fit
- Available in various lengths and styles
Understanding the Benefits of Compression Wear
Compression wear, including Nike Pro Compression Shorts, has gained popularity in recent years due to its potential performance-enhancing benefits. These garments are designed to apply pressure to specific areas of the body, which can lead to improved blood flow and reduced muscle vibration. Are these benefits scientifically proven?
While research is ongoing, some studies have shown that compression wear can indeed provide benefits such as reduced muscle soreness, improved recovery time, and enhanced proprioception (awareness of body position). However, it’s important to note that individual results may vary, and compression wear should be used as part of a comprehensive training and recovery program.
Potential Benefits of Wearing Compression Shorts
- Improved blood circulation
- Reduced muscle fatigue and soreness
- Enhanced recovery after intense workouts
- Increased stability and support for muscles and joints
- Better moisture management during exercise
Choosing the Right Size and Fit for Nike Pro Compression Shorts
Selecting the correct size and fit for Nike Pro Compression Shorts is crucial for maximizing their benefits and ensuring comfort during wear. How can you determine the right size for your body type?
Nike provides a comprehensive size chart that takes into account waist and hip measurements. It’s essential to measure yourself accurately and consult this chart before making a purchase. Keep in mind that compression shorts are designed to fit snugly, but they shouldn’t be so tight that they restrict movement or cause discomfort.
Tips for Finding the Perfect Fit
- Take accurate measurements of your waist and hips
- Consider the intended use (e.g., running, yoga, weightlifting)
- Try on different lengths to find your preferred coverage
- Ensure the waistband sits comfortably without digging in
- Move around in the shorts to test range of motion
Popular Styles and Designs of Nike Pro Compression Shorts
Nike offers a wide range of styles and designs in their Pro Compression Shorts line, catering to various preferences and needs. From classic solid colors to bold patterns and prints, there’s something for every athlete. Which styles are currently trending among women?
Some popular styles include the Nike Pro 3″ shorts, which offer a shorter inseam for maximum mobility, and the Nike Pro 5″ shorts, which provide more coverage for activities like cycling or CrossFit. Additionally, Nike frequently releases limited edition prints and collaborations, adding variety to their lineup.
Trending Nike Pro Compression Shorts Styles
- Solid black for a sleek, versatile look
- Vibrant neon colors for high visibility
- Geometric patterns and abstract prints
- Tie-dye and watercolor-inspired designs
- Metallic accents for a touch of glamour
Incorporating Nike Pro Compression Shorts into Your Workout Wardrobe
Nike Pro Compression Shorts can be a versatile addition to any workout wardrobe. They can be worn on their own for activities like running or yoga, or layered under looser shorts for team sports. How can you create stylish and functional outfits with these shorts?
Pairing Nike Pro Compression Shorts with a matching Nike Pro top creates a cohesive look for the gym or studio. For outdoor activities, consider layering them under running shorts or a tennis skirt. The shorts also work well as a base layer for cold-weather workouts when worn under thermal tights.
Outfit Ideas for Nike Pro Compression Shorts
- Pair with a loose tank top for a casual yoga look
- Layer under basketball shorts for added support during games
- Wear with a crop top for high-intensity interval training
- Combine with a long-sleeve top for cool-weather runs
- Mix and match colors and patterns for a bold gym outfit
Caring for Your Nike Pro Compression Shorts
Proper care and maintenance of your Nike Pro Compression Shorts can extend their lifespan and preserve their performance features. How should you wash and store these specialized garments?
To maintain the integrity of the compression fabric and moisture-wicking properties, it’s recommended to wash Nike Pro Compression Shorts in cold water on a gentle cycle. Avoid using fabric softeners or bleach, as these can damage the technical fibers. Air-drying is preferable to using a dryer, as high heat can break down the elastic fibers over time.
Care Instructions for Nike Pro Compression Shorts
- Machine wash in cold water with similar colors
- Use a mild, sport-specific detergent
- Avoid fabric softeners and bleach
- Air-dry or tumble dry on low heat
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
Finding the Best Deals on Nike Pro Compression Shorts
While Nike Pro Compression Shorts are a high-quality investment in your athletic wardrobe, there are ways to find them at more affordable prices. Where can you look for the best deals on these popular shorts?
Keep an eye out for seasonal sales on Nike’s official website, especially during major shopping events like Black Friday or Cyber Monday. Additionally, authorized Nike retailers and sporting goods stores often offer discounts on previous season’s styles. Online marketplaces like the one mentioned in the original text can also be great sources for gently used or new-with-tags Nike Pro Compression Shorts at reduced prices.

The best women’s running shorts 2023 UK
Nothing beats that first run of the summer, when you dash out the door wearing just a vest and shorts, unencumbered by extra layers and sporting a new pair of running sunglasses. Or maybe you’re a hardcore member of Team ‘It’s Always Shorts Weather’, and like to brave the bare legs all year round.
Either way, finding women’s running shorts that are flattering, chafe-free, stay in place and have enough pockets to store your essentials (more pockets, please), can feel like an uphill struggle. And don’t even get us started on leg length…

Looking for the best men’s running shorts? Check out our round-up
The good news is that like running shoes, women’s running shorts have come on leaps and bounds in recent years, and now there really is a pair for all seasons (that you can also match to your favourite running top). Prefer short-shorts for speeding around the track? Or longer cycling-style shorts to beat the long distance chafe? Maybe you’re just after the perfect running shorts with a phone pocket? From the perfect lightweight kit for chasing that parkrun PB, to gear that won’t rub on marathon day, we’ve got you covered.
The best running shorts for women to shop in 2023
In a hurry? No sweat. Click the links below to jump to our top picks for every type of running shorts, from cycling-style to race day favourites.
- The best women’s cycling-style running shorts

- The best women’s running split shorts
- The best women’s running shorts under £30
- The best women’s race day shorts
Types of women’s running shorts
Running shorts for women are typically broken down into the following three categories:
• Compression / cycling-style shorts
Tired of thigh-rub or tiny shorts that ride up? Running brands have finally seen the light! And cycling-style shorts are now mainstream kit for runners looking for chafe-free comfort. Confusingly, they’re still called cycling shorts (as cyclists got their first).
But slightly longer, form-fitting shorts that have more of a compression effect are well suited to women who run, as they minimise chafe and maximise comfort. ‘Compression shorts will also help improve blood flow for faster recovery and help to protect against overuse injuries,’ says Nicola Stewart from Up and Running.
• 2-in-1 shorts
If the idea of wearing skintight shorts turns you cold but it’s too warm to run in leggings, you do still have options. 2-in-1 shorts can be a great compromise, as they look like classic shorts but they have a tight cycle-style layer underneath to minimise rubbing, while the relaxed outer layer provides extra coverage. ‘2-in-1 shorts have a longer inner layer which can help prevent chafing, and cover modesty if you don’t like wearing something too short,’ says Stewart.
• Split shorts
The classic style first seen on runners in the 1980s, split shorts usually come with small splits up the sides for extra range of motion, hence the name. Also known as V-notch shorts, they’re often a race day favourite. ‘These tend to have a pant-type liner, and are usually a lighter short,’ explains Stewart. ‘They come in a variety of lengths, ranging from 3 to 5 and 7 inches.’
What to look for in women’s running shorts
Choosing running shorts is largely down to personal preference, but there are a few points worth considering before you make a purchase. ‘Like with running shoes, one of the most important things is to make sure that whichever shorts you choose, they are comfortable,’ explains Stewart. ‘The right fit will help prevent chafing, and ensure no movement while out on your run, so try on a few different types to see which works best for you.’
It’s also normal to wear different shorts to suit your training days. ‘Lots of runners prefer to wear a shorter pair for racing or short runs, as this will allow more range of motion and increase breathability,’ says Stewart. ‘However, if your thighs tend to rub together, I would advise going for a longer pair of compression shorts, or a 2-in-1 to minimise any issues.’

Cycling-style shorts have transformed the landscape of running kit for women, and we are here for it! Your hunt for running shorts with a phone pocket is over…
lululemon Base Pace High-Rise Short 8″
Now 19% Off
£39 at Lululemon
Easily the comfiest pair of shorts on our list, the seamless fabric is gloriously soft to the touch while still feeling supportive around the middle, plus it withstood the multiple wash test without going bobbly. And thanks to silicone grips around the thighs they didn’t ride up or down on the run.
We particularly rate the hidden pocket in the waistband at the back, which is roomy enough to hold a large smartphone and house keys. At eight inches, the leg length is ideal for combating dreaded thigh chafe, and they also come in navy blue and dark red.
Gym + Coffee Essential Base Bike Shorts
Now 50% Off
£22 at gympluscoffee.com
We recently discovered Irish athleisure brand Gym + Coffee and we’re already big fans. These cycling-style shorts are super comfortable, they keep everything in place and they’re surprisingly flattering too.
The camo print design is funky without being too flamboyant and the shorts didn’t budge an inch during our training runs. The only pocket on the back is big enough to fit your keys and phone, but you will need to wear your running belt if your smartphone is bigger than an iPhone 6.
Sweaty Betty Power 9″ Cycling Shorts
£60 at Sweaty Betty
If you need a comfortable pair of shorts you can wear on your run and brunch with your mates afterwards, we’ve found them. These cycling-style shorts are essentially the summer version of Sweaty Betty’s popular running leggings, so they come with the brand’s popular ‘bum-sculpting’ technology.
But we know that for some, the most important thing is finding running shorts with a phone pocket. Well, you’re in luck. There’s also a side pocket big enough for an iPhone and a zipped pocket on the back for your keys, plus they’re available in a range of colours and prints including black camo, hot pink and the funky blue floral kaleidoscope.
Nike Women’s Mid-Rise Bike Shorts
£28 at Nike
For a cost-effective pair of black shorts to see you through all seasons, you can’t go wrong with Nike’s mid-rise bike shorts. The fitted legs side-step any chafing concerns, there’s a zipped back pocket for your essentials, and a thick waistband with a drawcord to minimise movement as you clock up the miles.
They also come with reflective detailing if you run early or late enough in the day to need extra visibility. And if you’re a fan of colourful kit, they’re available in gorgeous indigo haze and made from at least 50% recycled fabric.
New Balance Impact Run Fitted Short
£45 at New Balance
If you’re looking for lightweight kit to wear round the track but you prefer to have your thighs covered, these mid-waisted New Balance shorts will be just the ticket. Thanks to well-placed panels they’re tight fitting and won’t budge on the move.
They also come with handy side pockets for all your essentials and a storage tunnel on the back for stowing extra layers (provided they’re lightweight). And best of all they adhere to New Balance’s new green leaf standard, so at least 50% of the materials used come with eco-credentials.
From Nike’s classic Dri-FIT shorts to New Balances’s Impact Run, here are five of our favourite 2-in-1 shorts…
Nike Dri-FIT Swift Women’s Mid-Rise 2-in-1 Running Shorts
£60 at Nike
Nike’s classic running shorts come with a relaxed fit for comfort, sweat-wicking tech to keep you cool and a subtle side split so you can move freely as you clock up the miles.
They also include a zip pocket, a couple of internal pockets big enough for your essentials plus a key loop, and the built-in liner shorts are the ideal length to protect your modesty while beating the dreaded thigh chafe.
New Balance Impact Run 2in1 Shorts
£45 at New Balance
Chafe protection? Tick. Running shorts with phone pocket? Tick. If chafing is keeping you awake at night, these 2-in-1 shorts from New Balance have a longer under-short to protect your thighs over any distance. They also come with handy drop-in leg pockets, while the outer short offers just enough coverage as you move.
We also rate the drawcord waistband, which is great for minimising movement and making you feel secure. And they also come in blue, white and pink.
Sweaty Betty On Your Marks 4” Running Shorts
£60 at Sweaty Betty
We genuinely credit these shorts with getting us out running more. They’re incredibly comfortable and we particularly liked the double waistband offering a little more coverage. Speaking of, the inner shorts helped us run with confidence, feeling supported and held in, and were perfectly fitted around the thighs — no sausage legs here.
The undershorts also stayed in place with no riding up, while the outer shorts boast zip pockets on each side for the essentials. They’re roomy with a touch of flex, so can double up as training shorts as there’s no movement restriction whatsoever.
Also available in black, pink floral glitch and this awesome purple print.
Under Armour Women’s UA Fly-By 2.0 2-in-1 Shorts
Now 14% Off
£31 at Under Armour£24 at Amazon£31 at John Lewis
These 2-in-1 shorts from Under Armour are on the dinkier side and they are fairly low-waisted, so you will require a modicum of body confidence to hit the road. But the gathered waistband is surprisingly comfortable and thanks to the built-in compression shorts we felt supported and not at all conscious — plus clever mesh panels kept us cool.
The little key pocket also came in handy, plus we love the pink version too.
Stance Women’s Work It Out Short
£80 at stance.eu.com
These shorts really are 2-in-1, as you can remove the inner cycling-style shorts — they’re attached by an interior button and elastic fastening on each side. We’ll admit we were initially sceptical of this wizardry (surely the buttons would dig in?) but we actually didn’t feel them at all when on the move.
Then both parts also work brilliantly individually — although it’s worth noting the outer split shorts don’t have any pockets (there is a small storage tunnel to the back), and the inner shorts (with drop-in leg pockets) are shorter than a lot of cycling-style numbers, but ideal if you want something fuss-free.
Ready to hit the track? Here’s our pick of the best split shorts to give your running the edge.
lululemon Tracker Low-Rise Short
Now 19% Off
£39 at Lululemon
While the waist on these snazzy split shorts from lululemon is fairly low, the thick elasticated band sits comfortably on the hips, so they won’t move up or down when you run. Meanwhile the legs have a looser fit that doesn’t cling to your thighs, so they’re super comfy to run in.
The only downside is the lack of phone pocket, meaning you’ll still need to carry a running belt if you run to music. But they do still have two zipped pockets for your valuables.
New Balance Women’s Impact Run 5in Short
£40 at New Balance
If pocket space is important to you, thanks to an interior drop-in and a hidden zip-pocket, these unexpectedly roomy split shorts from New Balance are ideal for storing all your essentials.
They also come with built-in briefs to keep you comfy and the extra wide waistband is a nice touch. And for a pop of colour on race day, they’re also available in pale pink.
Nike AeroSwift Women’s Running Shorts
£70 at Nike
If you’re shopping for race day summer run shorts, your hunt is over. Thanks to the brand’s ‘AeroSwift’ technology, these classic split shorts from Nike feel so light and breezy, you’ll be clocking up the PBs before lunch.
They also come with a drawcord waistband plus a hidden drop-in pocket for your house keys. And they’re also available in sensible black or fabulous pink.
Vuori Clementine Short 2.
0
£60 at vuoriclothing.co.uk
If overheating is your personal bugbear, these stylish running shorts from Vuori are made from sweat-wicking, 4-way-stretch fabric, with a breathable mesh brief liner to help you keep your cool. They’re pyjama-comfy but have all the technical features you want from a pair of running shorts: quick-drying (and anti-odour!) material, a zipped stash pocket, reflective detailing and a 2.5″ inseam.
We loved the drawcord elasticated waist and how light the shorts are, plus they’re made in part from recycled materials and come in a bunch of cool colours — try the pistachio shade for on-trend running kit this summer.
Ronhill Women’s Tech Revive Short
Now 15% Off
£34 at wiggle.com
The late Ron Hill was the brains behind the original split shorts and his kit is still loved by runners today. These classic shorts come with all the bells and whistles you might expect from a great pair of running bottoms including a wide, comfortable waistband, an easy-access zipped pocket for your essentials, and they’re made from light and breathable fabric with the famous split up the sides.
They’re also available in black with spicy detailing.
New kit doesn’t have to cost a fortune. If you’re looking for a pair of running shorts that will last the summer, we’ve picked out some affordable options below.
Nike Women’s Mid-Rise Running Shorts
£28 at Nike
These classic shorts from Nike are simple but effective. They come with a comfortable drawcord waistband to keep things in place, a relaxed fit for freedom of movement and a small drop-in pocket for your house keys.
You’ll still need to wear a running belt if you’re carrying your phone, but if you’re after an affordable pair of running shorts, you can’t really go wrong. And they come in pretty pastel pink.
New Balance Printed Accelerate 5 inch Short
£30 at New Balance
These funky mid-rise shorts from New Balance are designed for speedy running, but frankly they’d look just as cool whizzing around the dance floor. The woven shell fabric is moisture-wicking to help you stay cool, while the dreamy lilac print and bold piping give extra style points for race day.
Plus they have hand pockets on both sides, and if you’d prefer a slightly more understated look, they also come in navy with funky red print panels.
Decathlon Run Dry Women’s Running Shorts
£8 at Decathlon
At under £10, these simple running shorts from Decathlon are a great choice if you’re looking for summer run kit. They have a wide waistband that includes a drawcord to minimise movement, plus a small zipped pocket for your valuables and leg splits for speedy running.
To complete the look, pop this affordable fluro pink running tank top into your shopping cart while you’re here.
Gymshark Speed Shorts
Now 50% Off
£15 at GymShark
These breezy run shorts from Gymshark are available in black, white or grey, so there’s something for everyone. They come with a wide, comfortable waistband that feels soft against the skin as you move, plus a zipped pocket on the back for your essentials and an in-built knicker-liner for extra coverage.
adidas Run It Shorts
Now 40% Off
£15 at Adidas UK
We love this classic pair of funky three-stripe running shorts from adidas! They’re comfortable to wear, come with handy reflective detailing for late night running (or dancing!) and the built-in briefs are great for extra coverage as you move.
And best of all, they’re made from recycled fabric, all while channeling the trend du jour — Barbiecore. For maximum effect, pair with this breezy running tank top from the same brand.
The following shorts are designed to be close-fitting and light, minimising any distractions and allowing you to focus on enjoying the day.
Tracksmith Lane Five Tights
£68 at Tracksmith
Tracksmith call these ‘short tights for serious training’ and they’re not wrong. They are extremely comfortable, with a high waist and a lightweight, soft fabric. They feel cool while holding everything in place comfortably, and they have no less than five pockets for your essentials.
We wore these for both speed work and longer runs and they didn’t ride up or down once. Tracksmith don’t currently have any shops in the UK, but you can order from their website in a ton of colours — we’re particularly partial to the loden green.
Nike Fast Tempo Women’s Dri-FIT Running Shorts
£38 at Nike£38 at Amazon
These Tempo Race shorts from Nike are designed for running fast. The loose, ventilated design will allow you to focus on your run with zero distractions.
As with most race day shorts, they don’t have a huge amount of pocket space. But if you’re travelling light and you have a PB in mind, the simple design and sweat-wicking fabric will keep you comfortable. Also available in lime green.
On Running Sprinter Shorts
£60 at On Running
These cycling-style shorts from On Running are designed for speed sessions and race day. But unlike most sprinter shorts, they come with several pockets including a mesh drop-in pocket on the leg for carrying gels.
We particularly like the deep, comfortable waistband and flattering panels. They’re also made from 50% recycled fabric too.
Hoka Women’s Split Short
£45 at hoka.com
Our fave French brand Hoka added running kit to their collection fairly recently, and these shorts are winners. Whether you’re cruising 100 miles or sprinting one, they will keep you comfortable.
They’ve got drop-in pockets big enough for your smartphone, have a water-repellant finish and they’re made from a silky-soft, stretchy fabric that feels cool and comfortable against the skin. A drawcord ensures you get the perfect fit, there’s a breathable mesh brief liner and a handy bungee loop for your key.
2XU Womens Aero 4” Shorts
£29 at Decathlon£16 at Amazon
Of course, no one says you have to run in tiny shorts on race day, so if you prefer a few more inches of leg wear these shorts from 2XU will do the trick. They are extremely lightweight, moisture-wicking and ideal for race day.
