ALEXEY BALABANOV’S RETROSPECTIVE “ABOUT MONSTERS AND PEOPLE”, September 3-27
From September 3 to 27, the Pioneer cinema will host the first in Russia full retrospective of Alexei Balabanov “About monsters and people”. Within a month, ten full-length films by the master will be demonstrated, which will help the viewer to trace the evolution of the director’s work and fully prepare for a special screening of Balabanov’s new film, The Stoker.
“A cursed poet”, “the most integral of the artists of the first row in the national cinema”, “a great director” – as soon as critics of leading publications did not characterize Alexei Balabanov. One thing is clear: Balabanov is a significant director, one of the few domestic filmmakers to whom the French definition of auteur can be fully attributed.
“He is the most complex formula of nature: an explosive mixture of childishness with cynicism, stubbornness and naivety, restlessness and indifference. (…) He loves his work and himself in it. Service to the cinema rewards him with loneliness, seclusion, unsociableness, emotional poverty and a noticeable inattention to the people around, ”Viktor Sukhorukov.
And, nevertheless, in Russia there is no second director with such a diverse and non-obvious body of work. Balabanov’s first paintings are aesthetic adaptations of the classics of European modernism (“Happy Days” according to Beckett and “Castle” according to Kafka). No less loved by intellectuals is the refined and decadent film “About Freaks and People” (special prize of “Kinotavr” and the “Nika” award for the best film and best director). And the peculiar trilogy “Brother” – “Brother 2” – “War” became a truly popular hit, dispersed into quotes. Balabanov also worked in a variety of genres: in his filmography, for example, there is a melodrama (“It doesn’t hurt me”) and a comedy (“Blind Man’s Bluff”).
A retrospective is an opportunity to trace the director’s creative path, link through motives, get the best idea of the picture of the world presented by him. The program is crowned by a special screening of Balabanov’s new film “The Stoker”, in which he returns to topics that are important to him. This picture received a special jury prize at the Window to Europe festival with the wording “for high professional skill. ”
Films will be presented by the filmmakers and film crew (Sergey Selyanov, Viktor Sukhorukov and others are expected among the guests)

9000 3 Happy Days
Drama, 86 min., USSR, 1991
Director: Aleksey Balabanov
Cast: Viktor Sukhorukov, Lika Nevolina, Evgeny Merkuryev, Genrikh Teikh, Nikolai Lavrov deserted streets. Along these streets, past these houses and these trams, HE wanders alone – a man without a name, without memory, without a past and without friends. Those rare people with whom his path crossed call him differently: some – Stepan Stepanovich, others – Peter, and a fragile blond girl who once sat down with him in a snowy cemetery calls him Borey and says that she is expecting a child from him. Everyone wants something from him, but he wants only one thing – to find himself a room where he could simply live. But even this simple goal turns out to be so unattainable… “The film “Happy Days”, filled with the melancholy absurdity of timelessness, did not cause any political storms. But they also contained a challenge – only aesthetic. The picture at the same time gave rise to a feeling of claustrophobia and frightening freedom: it is this combination that defines Balabanov’s directorial style and distinguishes him from other Russian directors of his generation, whose style suffers from either hermetic constriction or formless permissiveness”, Andrey Plakhov (“Directors of the Present”).
The Castle
Drama, 110 min., Russia/Germany/France, 1994
Director: Alexei Balabanov
Cast: Nikolai Stotsky, Svetlana Pismichenko, Viktor Sukhorukov, Anvar Libabov
Film adaptation of Franz’s most famous novel Kafka. Mr. Surveyor was invited by the Castle to conduct the relevant work. Arriving in the Village, he is surprised to find that no one is waiting for him here. Attempts to prove their rights run into a wall of misunderstanding. The desire to get into the mysterious Castle takes possession of the hero more and more . .. The authors of the film risked finishing the novel that had not been finished at the time. “(…) his “Castle” is not Kafkaesque psychedelia, but opposition to the madness of the environment, the stoic defense of one’s own world, of what is always with you. This is not a film adaptation of Kafka’s unfinished novel The Castle. This is a screen version of the novel that we received at one time (in our time) by mail in the cover of the magazine “Foreign Literature” and took it to the bookbinding workshop ourselves, ”Victoria Belopolskaya (“Seance”).
“Brother”
Action, 100 min., Russia, 1997
Director: Alexei Balabanov
Cast: Sergei Bodrov, Viktor Sukhorukov, Svetlana Pismichenko
Demobilized from the army Dan silt Bagrov returns to his hometown. The boring, monotonous life of the province cannot suit a strong Russian guy, and he decides to go to St. Petersburg to test himself. Moreover, there, according to rumors, his older brother has been flourishing for a long time. But the “new Russian” life of the northern capital turns out to be too unexpected, and Danila’s brother earns his living by contract killings. Danila has a lot to learn and deal with many… “A man has come to our cinema who is destined to become the personification of Time and Generation. And it’s very good that Bodrov Jr. is not an artist. The game is not for him. He should just be. And if in “The Prisoner of the Caucasus” the organic nature of this cinematic existence turned out to be more convincing than the brilliant talent of Oleg Menshikov, then in “Brother” there is no one to compare with Bodrov”, Sergei Lavrentiev (“Culture”).
“About freaks and people ”
Drama, 95 min., Russia, 1998
Director: Alexei Balabanov
Cast: Sergei Makovetsky, Victor Sukhorukov, Lika Nevolina, Dinara Drukarova, Alyosha Dyo 900 09
Early twentieth century . Two well-to-do families. And the mysterious Johann, the owner of a photographic studio, in the basement of which a certain photographic theater of the Marquis de Sade was created. Where photographic postcards are taken with the humiliated nakedness of the human body, evoking lust and a gloating triumph of power. The look of a photographer who can see angelic curls and a sweet smile in a girl, and the same look that decomposes the body, the look of a pornographer. Johann, marked by the devil, Johann, who kills the soul. It is he who gradually destroys the well-being of families and turns ordinary people into freaks. And the aroma of vice embraces the world… Special prize of the Kinotavr festival. “The philosophical grotesque of Alexei Balabanov receives two “Nikas” at once – for the best feature film and the best director’s work. The film by Alexei Balabanov is recognized as the main event of the past film year. It becomes a sensation – such a defiantly hermetic and misanthropic film, it seemed, was doomed to the fate of a laboratory opus that did not claim national awards and official recognition, ”Oleg Kovalov (“The Recent History of Russian Cinema”).
“Brother 2”
Action, 127 min. , Russia, 2000
Director: Alexei Balabanov
Cast: Sergei Bodrov, Viktor Sukhorukov, Sergei Makovetsky, Irina Saltykova, Kirill Pirogov
The second film about the hero 90 -X. Participating in a television program, Danila Bagrov meets his friends in Chechnya. One of them is suddenly killed. Danila knows that the victim was in trouble because of his brother, a hockey player who plays for an American club. Daniel needs to figure it out. Now his photo goes around the hands of the Russian and American mafias. The newly-minted “Al Capone” is horrified to realize that they ran into a real professional … “Brother-2 could appear only after it became clear that the dialogue of the two worlds, on which Brother was built, ended in nothing. Music, Voice leave the hero. “But if music leaves us, what will become of our world?” Unlike Brother, the world of Brother-2 is monological, self-sufficient and, in its self-sufficiency, self-satisfied”, Yevgeny Margolit (“The Recent History of Russian Cinema”).
“War”
Military drama, 120 min., Russia, 2002
Director: Alexei Balabanov
Cast: Alexei Chadov, Ian Kelly, Ingeborga Dapkunaite, Sergei Bodrov
On was a soldier in the Chechen war. In captivity, he became a slave. He was released and told not to come again. But he returned… “… Balabanov once again proved that he is a cinematographer from God or from the devil. Ingeborga Dapkunaite in the role of the “prisoner of the Caucasus” received a bathing scene in a mountain stream, worthy of Marilyn Monroe from “Niagara”. The river of life and death is the most powerful image of the whole picture: revenge for Balabanov’s unfilmed, catastrophically interrupted film, which was called “The River”, Andrei Plakhov (“Directors of the Present”).
Zhmurki
Crime comedy, 105 min., Russia, 2005
Director: Alexei Balabanov
Cast: Alexei Panin, Dmitry Dyuzhev, Nikita Mikhalkov, Sergei Makovetsky, Viktor Sukhorukov
1990s century. The era of “shooters”, outfits from Versace and six hundredth “Mercedes”. If “Boomer” parted with her in all seriousness, then “Zhmurki” say goodbye, laughing. The plot of the film revolves around a briefcase with heroin. Simon and Sergey will either return it to Mikhalych, the main local authority (the unexpected role of Nikita Mikhalkov), or say goodbye to life. Two young lawless people know only one way to compete – a shot in the head … “Blind Man’s Bluff” is a mixture of a comedy of masks … Gaidai with Tarantino’s – but in our style – “Reservoir Dogs”. Of the latter, and a direct quote: a black man tied to a chair with a bloody ear. The same thug, bandit, undergrowth, as they have – white-skinned WASPs. And we, and now Balabanov, are purely Russian guys. For everyone is equal before the laws of the genre. And the world, of course, is unfair”, Zara Abdullayeva (“Cinema Art”)
“It doesn’t hurt me”
Melodrama, 104 min., Russia, 2006
Director: Alexei Balabanov
Cast: Renata Litvinova, Alexander Yatsenko, Nikita Mikhalkov, Dmitry Dyuzhev
9000 9 Three friends stand on the doorstep of a fancy house in the center of a big city. They are young, full of strength and energy, they have talent, skill, lust for life and they have everything except money. However, for this they came here – to offer the services of a designer to the hostess of the house. Natella Antonovna is also young, but it seems that life has already bored her. At least that was the case before meeting Misha. He helped her fall in love with life again, and she found interesting work for him and his friends. Rich clients, expensive dinners, huge fees – friends never dreamed of this. And most importantly, she loves him! But at the same time, he hides something very important, which will inevitably affect their future. “It doesn’t hurt me” should be called “Melodrama”, simply and honestly. Aleksey Balabanov returns the classic simplicity to the genre, choosing the most melodramatic of all melodramatic plots. Love at first sight between a pure, naive young man and a doomed kept woman, Mikhail Trofimenkov (Kommersant)
“Gruz 200”
Thriller, 90 min. , Russia, 2007
Director: Alexei Balabanov
Cast: Agnia Kuznetsova, Alexei Poluyan, Yuri Stepanov, Leonid Gromov, Alexei Serebryakov
USSR. 1984 End of the Soviet era. Provinces. After the disco, the daughter of the secretary of the district committee of the party disappears. There are no witnesses. The culprits have not been found. On the same evening, a brutal murder takes place in a house on the outskirts of the city. The culprit is the owner of the house. Both investigations were entrusted to police captain Zhurov… “Gruz 200 is Balabanov’s best film. For my taste, it is better than the first “Brother” and even “Freaks” – and this is definitely the most important and important in Russian cinema over the past five years. Terrible as death. Absolutely brilliant”, Roman Volobuev (“Seance”)
Morphine
Drama, 112 min., Russia, 2008
Director: Alexei Balabanov
Cast: Leonid Bichevin, Ingeborga Dapkunaite, Svetlana Pismichenko, Andrei Panin, Sergey Garmash 9000 9
Screen version of Bulgakov’s cycle of stories “Notes young doctor. ” 1917, a time of turmoil, revolution, hopes and losses. A 23-year-old doctor Polyakov arrives at the hospital in the county town N. Once, fighting for the patient’s life, Polyakov endangers his own, saves him with an injection of morphine – the most powerful drug. But Polyakov does not believe that a sane person, especially a doctor, can become addicted … “Over the past two years, Balabanov has shot, it seems, two of his strongest films: Cargo-200 and Morphine. The latter, in my opinion, is even stronger than Gruz in terms of understanding the nature of cinema, in terms of how the feeling of what Russia experienced at the beginning of the last century was conveyed. I am convinced that with the latest films Balabanov secured the right to be called the largest Russian director and one of the largest directors in Europe. The fact that Europe has not yet understood this is its own business. Then it will be a shame and a pity that she missed it”, Avdotya Smirnova (“Session”)
The Stoker
Drama, 83 min. , Russia, 2010
Director: Alexei Balabanov
Cast: Mikhail Skryabin, Yuri Matveev, Alexander Mosin, Aida Tumutova, Anna Korotaeva
Petersburg, mid-90s years of the XX century. An old stoker on the outskirts of the city, in which the silent “Yakut”, an Afghan veteran, a retired major, lives. Now he works as a stoker, and in his spare time he clumsily types his story on a typewriter. However, the reclusive stoker is often visited by a variety of guests. “The simple and concise “Stoker”, in the main character of which, stingy with the outward manifestation of emotions and ruthless, especially sophisticated film critics can see clear parallels with Alexei Balabanov himself, may not shock the faint of heart like “Cargo 200”, Lidia Maslova ( Kommersant).
