England beaten by All Stars in Shaun Wane’s first game in charge | England rugby league team
Shaun Wane wanted a test for his first match as England head coach and he certainly got it here.
There had been some talk in the run-up to this mid-season international about the calibre of opposition the Combined Nations All Stars would provide in England’s one and only warm-up game before this year’s World Cup.
Whether the tournament actually takes place will be decided next week, with officials locked in discussions over the availability of Australia’s and New Zealand’s players. Without them there will be no World Cup but, if there is, England will almost certainly look back on this night as a vital step in their preparation.
The result did not go the way Wane would have hoped but, without so many frontline players due to injuries and Covid outbreaks at several Super League clubs, there were still plenty of lessons for him to learn, including from the players in the opposition ranks as well who were hoping to impress the national coach.
Chief among them were three England and Great Britain internationals who all made their mark here. Whether any of Jake Connor, Jermaine McGillvary or Jackson Hastings have done enough to convince Wane they can be part of his squad remains to be seen but they certainly played their part in an impressive win for the All Stars here after being overlooked by Wane for his own squad.
“I thought they played well,” Wane said. “But the England lads know more about me and I know more about them. There’s no excuses. We could have won that game, no question. We just needed to be a bit smarter. But I’m proud of the team.”
England trailed by two points at half-time. The impressive Liam Farrell crossed for two tries but scores in reply from Ken Sio and Peter Mata’utia – both of them created by Connor – coupled with three goals from Aidan Sezer put the All Stars 14-12 ahead at the break. It was a lead they merited and they extended it shortly after the restart.
A wonderful finish from McGillvary put daylight between the sides, before the outstanding Morgan Knowles reduced the arrears. Knowles was one of six debutants on the night and he impressed, as did Castleford’s Paul McShane. Both will have strengthened their claims for selection later this year.
However, despite their efforts, it was the All Stars who emerged worthy winners. Sio’s second try as the game entered the final quarter was a pivotal moment, restoring their eight-point lead.
Some instinctive play led to another debutant, Tom Davies, scoring his first international try in the dying moments but England could not breach the All Stars line again. Wane, however, will surely have learned plenty going into the second half of the season.
Ralph Rimmer on Combined Nations All Stars, regular France tests & Great Britain fixtures
England will play the Combined Nations All Stars again in 2022 but this time it will be a stand-alone fixture, says Rugby Football League chief executive Ralph Rimmer.
The return of the Super League-based All Stars, previously known as the Exiles, was designed to be a warm-up game for England ahead of the 2021 World Cup and it will provide the same function in the run-up to the delayed tournament.
The game at Warrington in June, which England lost 26-24, was compromised by the decision of Super League clubs to play a full round of fixtures over the same weekend but Rimmer says a gap has been created in the calendar for it next summer.
England are also set to play Fiji before the World Cup but Rimmer is hoping competitive men’s and women’s test matches against France in Perpignan on Saturday will pave the way for the return of regular Anglo-French clashes.
Rimmer said: “I thought the All Stars concept on the whole was very successful. A bigger build-up would help us all and a window is in the calendar, so hopefully we can make more of it.”
Regular clashes between England and France
Rimmer added: “I do believe the two French teams are going to provide us with good opposition this weekend.
“Having two teams from France in Super League demonstrates the quality that is available and we’re going to play in in an environment which we know will be pretty partisan. It’s an important building block for our men and women.
“On the back of good games this weekend, I think will get into some fairly regulation competition with the French.”
Rimmer says he is expecting a near sell-out crowd at Stade Gilbert Brutus for the double-header on the back of the Catalans Dragons’ success in winning the League Leaders’ Shield and reaching a first Grand Final in 2021.
A bumper crowd will also boost France’s bid to host the next World Cup in 2025.
Rimmer said: “I’m lucky enough to be involved in the preparation of that bid and I think it would be fantastically exciting to land the World Cup in 2025, on the back of the French having already hosted the Olympics and the Rugby Union World Cup.
“It would be a great shot in the arm for world rugby league.”

Rimmers says Great Britain fixtures are pencilled into the next international calendar, which he hopes will be published in the next six months.
He added: “The delay over the World Cup has disrupted the work that had been put into the international calendar.
“It’s a big piece of work involved with cooperation from everybody around the globe but we think the production of an international calendar, which up to this point has been the holy grail of rugby league, is imminent and that will be probably one of the biggest building blocks we can achieve.
”
Meanwhile, Rimmer insists the return of England head coach Shaun Wane to a role on the Wigan backroom team, which effectively means he will be part-time with the national team, will not have any adverse effect on preparations for the World Cup.
He commented: “Shaun came to me with the notion of the new arrangement and we talked it through at some length.
“I think it’s good to get Shaun out working a bit more openly. We know his time with us will ebb and flow, and we wouldn’t have done anything to jeopardise our World Cup preparation. I think we will benefit from it.”

HULL FC fullback Jake Connor is set to be the shock inclusion in the Combined Nations All Stars team to face England this Friday night when it is announced by coach Tim Sheens today.
Sheens has already announced that Jackson Hastings will be one of his co-captains to give the Wigan star the chance to make a point to Shaun Wane following his exclusion from the England squad.
Connor will also be given the same opportunity, and Sheens is excited by the prospect of his combination with Hastings and Aidan Sezer, the Huddersfield halfback who has also been earmarked for a key role alongside Hastings at halfback.
“I said when I took this job that I was excited by the range of players we’d have to choose from, and although the selection process has been complicated – especially by Covid – we’re going to end up with a really exciting group,” said Sheens.
“It was great when we were able to confirm Jackson as co-captain, and he’s really looking forward to playing in the game. It’s the same with Jake Connor, and I’m really happy with the prospect of those two and Aidan Sezer as the spine of our team.”
Sheens says his team will play with attacking flair and adventure, and will pose England plenty of problems at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, saying he will take the shackles off his players.
“It will be a good game, it will be a good intensity,” he said.
“I’m not going to restrict them; we’re going to play with a bit more flair, as I normally coach that way anyway. Hopefully people will see a really good game of football and it will test England, who will need the Test because they just don’t have that quality to draw on like Australia has with State of Origin.
“So for Shaun it’s a great chance to get his guys tested and to get some combinations as he thinks about the World Cup at the end of the year.”
Sheens will only have two training sessions with his players before the match but is unconcerned about the lack of preparation time.
“There’s a number of reasons for them to play well, so it won’t take me long to get them ready in a week,” he said.
“They’re naturally talented, you don’t have to coach them as such, you just manage them, get them sorted with some basic stuff and in a rep team they generally come together.
“You can still feed into them some stuff on set pieces. We’ve got to come up with a basic language for the team to remember.
“We’ll play to our strengths and hopefully England’s weaknesses. But it’s there to help Shaun get a good game.
“I’m looking forward to putting up a strong side against Shaun and I’m pretty sure we’ll be fired up enough to win. For us it’s a big game.”

Sam Tomkins appointed captain of England against the Combined Nations All Stars
Sam Tomkins has been appointed England’s captain for Friday’s match against the Combined Nations All Stars.
The 32-year-old Catalans Dragons full-back will lead out his side at Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium on his 30th England appearance, almost nine years since he announced himself on the international scene with a hat-trick of tries on debut against Wales in Bridgend.
Tomkins takes on the England role from his old Wigan team-mate Sean O’Loughlin, who led England against New Zealand in 2018 and retired at the end of the 2020 season, and will be in pole position to lead his country in the end-of-season World Cup.
England coach Shaun Wane said: “I’ve known Sam a long time and he’s the perfect captain.
“He handles himself well, he’s a very skilful player, plays a key part in games and offers real quality from full-back.”
Tomkins demonstrated his commitment to the England cause by driving for 16 hours from his home in the south of France to link up with the squad last weekend.
Tomkins said: “Being named captain of England is right up there with anything I’ve achieved in the game.

“I’ve been really lucky to represent England a number of times over the years but becoming captain is something else.
“I’ve played under some great captains over the years – Sinfield, O’Loughlin, Peacock – and hopefully I’ve picked some things up from them. Shaun will expect me to lead from the front, which is what I intend to do.
“The journey from France was something out of the ordinary.
A 16-hour drive isn’t normal preparation for an England game but Covid has turned the world upside down in lots of ways.

“I was told I’d have to drive in a single hit – no hotel stops, pay-at-the-pump petrol stations – but playing for England is something I’ve wanted to do since I was seven years old so a 16-hour drive is nothing against being able to pull on an England shirt.”
Meanwhile, Wigan second rower John Bateman has defended Friday’s fixture which has drawn criticism after it clashed with a round of Super League fixtures.
“I can’t get my head around why people wouldn’t want it to be played,” Bateman said.
“People say the domestic game takes priority but for me the international game is what it’s all about.
“Playing for your country is one of the best feelings ever. Some of these boys haven’t done it yet going out there and making their debuts this weekend, that’s what it’s all about, to be able to see players do that.
“For myself, I will never get bored of it, I will play for my country until the day I stop playing rugby.
”
The mid-season game has been arranged to help Wane in his preparations for the World Cup.
Bateman, who played in the 2017 World Cup final, added: “It’s a big stepping stone for us as a team. We want to go out and win the World Cup and these games play a massive part in that.”
Bateman returned to Wigan at the start of the season after a stint in the NRL with Canberra Raiders.

TOKYO (Japan) – Sorted by positions – the two guards, two forwards and one center – the Tokyo 2020 All-Star Five hail from five different nations: the four Semi-Finalists and one Quarter-Finalist in Spain.
Ricky Rubio was the preeminent point guard of the Tokyo 2020 Games. The Spaniard only had one 20-point game for the senior national team before coming to these Olympics; the pass-first point guard would go on to set a couple of records in the Saitama Super Arena.
Rubio had 20, 26, 18 and 38 points over his four games, with his 38-point explosion setting the new single-game record for Spain at the Olympics. Since all of those 38 came against the USA, it also marks the most points scored by a player versus the United States since they started playing with professional athletes in 1992. Rubio’s tournament averages were 25.5 points and 6.0 assists per game.
The shooting guard position belongs to Australia’s Patty Mills. Even if there was any doubt for this spot, the flag bearer erased it with an unbelievable performance of 42 points and 9 assists in the Bronze Medal Game against Slovenia. Coming into that contest, Australia had never won an Olympic medal in Men’s Basketball. Mills wasn’t going to let it happen this time around.
“I just tried to leave it all out there and it is a cliched thing to say that the tank was very empty. But you just knew that you needed to find deeper layers to be able to pull the best out of us for the team and that is what all of us done,” Mills said after picking up his first Olympic bronze.
Slovenia lost the battle for third, but still showed a lot of pride. A country of two million people was battling neck and neck with the perennial juggernauts of the world and showed they have a superstar of their own in Luka Doncic.
The Slovenian is listed as a small forward, but realistically he plays the point forward position with his skill to organize the plays as the extended arm of coach Aleksander Sekulic. Doncic picked up the first Olympic triple-double since 2012, and just the third one in the history of the Games with his 16 points, 18 assists and 10 rebounds in the Semi-Finals. Showcasing Doncic’s sublime tournament play, the Slovenian almost averaged a triple-double for the entire event: 23.8 points, 9.7 rebounds, 9.5 assists.
Doncic would’ve been a strong candidate for the MVP, but Kevin Durant had other ideas. He was the top scorer of the Final for the third time running, after dropping 30 points in both 2012 and 2016, he had 21 at the half of the Tokyo 2020 Final and finished with 29 points, just one shy of the Olympic Finals record, which he shares with Adrian Dantley.
Durant has now won three Olympic gold medals, and as the MVP of the Men’s Basketball Tournament, he could be going for a fourth gold in three years’ time in Paris. Team USA needed him to step up after the early struggles and the loss to France, and he delivered on a level that proves once again he is one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
With Rubio and Mills as the guards, Doncic and Durant as the forwards, the center position went to France. Rudy Gobert’s rim protection has always been praised, and he had three big games when it mattered most for France.
The Utah Jazz center dominated against Italy in the Quarter-Finals with 22 points and 9 rebounds. He then had 9 points, 16 rebounds and 4 blocks, including two on dunk attempts against Edo Muric and Vlatko Cancar, in the Semi-Final against Slovenia. Gobert finished up with team-highs of 16 points and 8 rebounds in the Final against the USA.

The rating of income of representatives of show business followed the rating of celebrities “40 stars under 40”, published in the July issue of Forbes magazine. Since 2019, we have changed the methodology of the traditional rating of the most successful Russian celebrities: an age qualification was introduced for candidates, which cut off a whole pool of first-class stars from participation in it.

An attempt to scientifically analyze such an ancient Christian symbol as the Star of Bethlehem may seem to someone somewhat impolite.However, a quiet debate among astronomers over what it could be has been going on for many decades.
Could the star that prompted the three “wise men from the East” to go in search of the newborn King be a real astronomical phenomenon?
Such a debate requires one serious assumption – that the story of the star and the journey of the Magi is genuine.
Professor David Hughes, an astronomer at the University of Sheffield, first published a review of theories explaining the “Star of the Magi” back in the 1970s.
He spent the following decades studying astronomical explanations for this phenomenon, as well as related biblical stories, so that Hughes is now a recognized expert in this field.
But there are also some intriguing historical parallels here.
The “Three Kings” who came to worship the baby Jesus were themselves scholars of their time, experts in the occult sciences, known as “wise men” or magicians – astronomers and astrologers revered in Babylon. They studied stars and planets, interpreting the meaning of certain cosmic events.
Merging of planets
Any unusual phenomenon that happened in the sky was perceived as a sign. Therefore, the Star of Bethlehem had to be both very rare and visually impressive at the same time. According to Hughes, she had to send a very clear signal to the Magi, without questioning the interpretation.
All of this led the astronomer to the conclusion that the Star of Bethlehem was probably not a star at all, and that it was most likely something more than a one-time astronomical event.
“If you read the Bible carefully, you will find that the wise men saw something while in their country [probably in Babylon],” says Professor Hughes. “They went to Jerusalem, where they had a conversation with King Herod.”
According to the gospel story, the wise men told Herod about the sign they had seen. Then, leaving Jerusalem, the astronomer says, they again saw something unusual, which made them very happy.
The best explanation for this, according to Hughes, is the so-called triple conjunction of the planets – when Jupiter and Saturn line up with the Earth.Moreover, this should have happened three times over a short period of time.
“This happens when the Sun, Earth, Jupiter and Saturn are in a straight line,” explains Hughes.
According to a number of researchers, a series of three such “parades of the planets” that took place over the course of one year fits well with the Gospel story of Christmas and the worship of the Magi.

Comets often “hover” or “stop” over the horizon
Tim O’Brian, assistant director of the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire, says it must have been a spectacular sight.“It’s incredible how much attention is drawn when two fairly bright objects come together in the sky,” he says.

Tailed Star
The second possible explanation for the Star of Bethlehem could be the appearance of a very bright comet.
Despite the fact that comets look extremely impressive and beautiful celestial bodies from Earth, in fact they are “big dirty lumps of snow” flying through space.
“As they approach the Sun, the ice begins to melt – the solar wind carries this substance into space, creating a ‘tail’ of cometary material,” says O’Brian.
According to Professor Hughes, the tail pointing away from the Sun is one of the factors that makes the comet’s version so popular.
“Quite a decent number of people have said that comets seem to” stop “above the Earth because of the surrounding clouds of cometary gas and a tail that sometimes looks like an arrow,” says Hughes.
A rather bright comet that appeared in the constellation Capricorn in 5 BC, which was described by Chinese astronomers, is most suitable for the time of the Gospel events.
A less likely but more famous candidate is Halley’s comet, which was visible from Earth around 12 BC.
Those who lean in favor of the “fifth year” version indicate that for an observer from Jerusalem that comet should have been in the southern part of the sky (that is, in the direction of Bethlehem), with a head very low above the horizon and a tail, directed vertically upward.
“A lot of people like the idea of a comet, so it’s a common occurrence on Christmas cards,” says Hughes.
“The catch is that comet phenomena are not uncommon. In addition, their appearance was strongly associated with impending disasters – plague, famine, mass death of people and other hardships,” the professor of astronomy argues. then the news, it could only be a bad omen. ”

Hughes says: “Those who advocate this version claim that this new star should have been located exactly over Jerusalem.”
According to Dr. Robert Cockcroft, planetarium manager at McMaster University in Ontario, the new star is a “good candidate” for the title of Star of Bethlehem.
“It could emerge as a new star in the constellation and fade again a few months later,” he explains. “It is not very bright, which explains the lack of records of it in the Western world.” According to Cockcroft, the flash of this star could serve as one of the indications for the Magi on their journey.
While other “signs” were needed to induce the Magi to travel west towards Jerusalem, he says, it would take at least a few months before they could get there.

In recent years, Hughes says, there have been other, unlikely but fascinating, explanations offered.
One of these, especially tense, according to him, hypotheses, was proposed in 1979 by the Greek astronomer Georgy Banos. He suggested that the Christmas star could actually be the planet Uranus.
Banos believes that the Magi discovered this planet 1,800 years earlier than astronomer William Herschel, who first described its discovery in 1781.
“His idea was that the Magi discovered Uranus, that it became the Star of Bethlehem, and that then they tried to ‘hush up’ their discovery,” says Hughes.
