Basketball National Invitation Tournament
Basketball National Invitational Tournament (NIT)
The National Invitational Tournament or as its more commonly called, the NIT, is an annual postseason tournament in college basketball. The tournament is formatted as a single elimination bracket. The tournament contains 32 teams and five rounds of action.
The NIT used to be the premier college basketball tournament before March Madness surpassed it in both popularity and notoriety. That happened in 1970 when the NCAA enacted a rule stating that any team invited to March Madness must compete in it. No longer could teams choose between the two tournaments, which has decreased the popularity of The NIT to where it is today.
When and Where is the NIT?
The NIT occurs simultaneously as other postseason tournament March Madness. It begins in March and plays its final game in the beginning of April (this past year’s championship game was played April 4th).
The opening rounds of the NIT are played at the home stadium of the higher ranked seed. This is done to ensure that attendance for the tournament will be high enough to earn sufficient revenue. The semifinals and final however are played in New York City at Madison Square Garden (MSG).
What Teams Qualify for the NIT?
The 32 teams that compete every year in the NIT are teams that were not invited to be a part of college basketball’s number one tournament, March Madness. For that reason the tournament is sometimes jokingly referred to as the “Not Invited Tournament”. The top seeds are the four teams that were listed as the “first four out” by the college basketball selection committee.
Teams that win their conference’s regular season title are guaranteed a spot in the NIT. So if a small conference team wins the regular season but loses in their conference tournament they lose out on a March Madness bid, but they still get to be in the NIT.
The remaining spots are filled by the tournament’s selection committee based on who they feel are the best remaining teams not in a tournament.
2019 NIT Tournament
This past year’s NIT tournament was won by two seed Texas University when they defeated the fifth seeded underdog Lipscomb by a score of 81-66.
Some notable moments included the number one seeded Alabama Crimson Tide being defeated in the first round of the tournament by eight seed Norfolk State.
Along with Lipscomb making a somewhat unexpected run based on their seed, Wichita State (sixth seed) also went deep, making it to the final four.
Basketball National Invitation Tournament
The National Invitation Tournament in basketball is a men’s college basketball tournament for the best teams in the country that did not make the NCAA Tournament. The tournament was developed in 1938 by a group called MIBA and is still held annually today. The most recent winner of the tournament was the Texas Longhorns. The later rounds in the tournament are typically held at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Tournament Structure
Thirty-two teams are invited to the tournament competing in a single-elimination format until a winner is decided. Teams used to have a .500 or greater record but that rule was changed in 2017 to allow more teams to be eligible. The teams are seeded 1-8 in four separate brackets and play until there is a champion.
Selection Process
Teams are selected based on multiple factors. They used to be chosen in consultation with ESPN, this is because they wanted to pick teams from large conferences with large tv followings. ESPN covered the tournament thus getting big ratings and keeping MIBA sustained financially.

Scilympiad – Science Olympiad National Invitational
How does this relate to the National Tournament?
The National Invitational is hosted jointly between this year’s National Tournament host and the National Science Olympiad Office. Many of the Event Supervisors have served as National Event Supervisors in the past and teams can expect to see some similarities in the approaches and format of various events.
Do I need an invitation to register? Do I need to qualify in order to register?
No invitation or qualification is needed. Just like other invitational tournaments, any teams registered with their state Science Olympiad chapter may register.
How much is registration? How many teams can register?
The registration fee for each team is $120. We are not restricting the number of teams per school. We are currently limiting the number of teams for the entire tournament to 200 teams in each Division B and Division C.
What events will be run? What schedule will be followed?
Will events be run following rules for the regional, state, or national level?
Because this tournament is an invitational, it will use rules for the regional level from the Rules Manual.
How will events with device testing be run?
For events with device testing, each team will submit a video demonstrating their device (more details to come) by December 18, 2021. These video submissions will be reviewed by the Event Supervisors and the top teams for each event will be invited to schedule a live demonstration of their device on tournament day through video call. The demonstration through the video call will determine the placement of these top teams. The rest of the teams will be ranked by their video submissions.
Does my team need to provide a test or volunteers?
No, all tests and grading will be handled by Event Supervisors that our tournament will provide.
Can I compete in this tournament from home?
No, because this tournament follows the Satellite format, you must compete in your events at your school under the supervision of your coach. If you are part of a homeschool team, you should competing in your normal homeschooling environment.
Will graded tests be returned to teams?
Yes, tests will be returned as it’s expected of invitational tournaments.
Will there be an awards ceremony? Will there be medals?
Yes, an awards ceremony will be premiered on YouTube with the medals and trophies will be mailed to the corresponding schools. We’ll be awarding medals for the top 10 places for each event. Depending on the number of teams, this number may increase.
What is the NIT? Explaining the bracket, history of NCAA’s oldest postseason tournament
It might not have quite the grandeur of the NCAA Tournament, but the NIT in 2021 represents an opportunity for a select few teams to play in the postseason — college basketball teams’ first such opportunity in two years.
March Madness may be the pinnacle of the sport, but it wasn’t always that way. At one point, the NIT (National Invitational Tournament) was considered the premier postseason tournament, even if it wasn’t considered the official national champion-producing competition. Indeed, winning the NIT for many years was considered on par with — or better than — winning the NCAA Tournament.
Times have changed, but that won’t affect the history of the NIT, nor its place in the game of college basketball. Even if modern teams would prefer to play in its postseason counterpart.
Here’s everything you need to know about the NIT: what teams are invited, tournament format, history and changes in 2021:
What is the NIT?
The NIT in its current form is a postseason tournament consisting of teams that failed to make the NCAA Tournament yet still had good-enough seasons to warrant invitations to participate in the postseason. The NCAA took over its operation in 2005 from the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association (MIBA), the tournament’s original founders and operators.
At one point, however, the NIT was considered the preeminent postseason basketball competition. The MIBA founded it in 1938, one year before the NCAA Tournament. It was generally considered the better of the two tournaments, for two reasons:
- The tournament took place entirely in New York’s Madison Square Garden, a more inviting media hub the NCAA Tournament lacked.
- The NCAA selection committee originally invited only one team from eight national regions, leaving the NIT with a more varied and occasionally stronger group of teams.
The location and competition resulted in many considering the NIT the preferable postseason tournament. That reputation held at least through the mid-1950s. From Bill Bradley’s book, “A Sense of Where You Are: Bill Bradley at Princeton”:
“In the 1940s, when the NCAA Tournament was less than 10 years old, the National Invitation Tournament, a saturnalia held in New York at Madison Square Garden by the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association, was the most glamorous of the postseason tournaments and generally had the better teams. The winner of the National Invitation Tournament was regarded as more of a national champion than the actual, titular, national champion, or winner of the NCAA Tournament.”
Additionally, teams could accept bids to both the NIT and NCAA Tournament. The City College of New York, for example, won both in 1950; Utah in 1944 lost its first NIT game but went on to win the NCAA Tournament. The champions of both tournaments played each other during World War II from 1943-45 in what was considered a charity game (the NCAA champion won each time).
The NIT began to decline in the 1970s — partly because TV networks began providing better primetime access to the NCAA Tournament, and also because the NCAA in 1975 removed its rule allowing only one team per conference to participate in the tournament. That forced the NIT to relinquish its hold on strong teams.
A significant factor in the 1975 rule change was the 1973-74 Maryland basketball team. The Terrapins, who finished the team ranked No. 4 nationally, were kept from the NCAA Tournament after losing the ACC Tournament final against N.C. State. That prompted the NCAA to expand its postseason tournament to 32 teams, allowing more than one bid per conference.
That same Maryland team became the first ever to decline a bid to the National Invitational Tournament.
NIT bracket format
The NIT bracket typically includes 32 teams and five rounds. The first two rounds as well as the quarterfinals are hosted on the campus of the higher-seeded team; the semifinals and championship game are held at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Round | Location |
Rounds 1-2, quarterfinals | Campus games |
Semifinals, championship | Madison Square Garden (New York) |
The NCAA on March 1 announced the NIT in 2021 would be reduced from its usual field of 32 teams to just 16 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, the NIT won’t feature campus games or its traditional finish in Madison Square Garden; the entirety of this year’s tournament will take place in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The Comerica Center (Frisco, Texas) and UNT Coliseum (Denton, Texas) will host games, though specific venues for each round are being finalized.
Another potential change is the NIT’s selection process. The NCAA on Feb. 26 released protocols to replace NCAA Tournament teams that can’t play because of issues with the coronavirus. The scenario would only occur after the initial 68-team has been set, but before the start of play: If a team is unable to play, the NCAA would select the first four teams out — ranked first through fourth — and invite them to participate in March Madness as an at-large. Otherwise, they will be a 1-seed in the NIT.
Finally, the 2021 NIT Tournament will feature a third-place game, to be played the same day as the championship. It is the first time the NIT has held a third-place game since 2003.
NIT selection process
The NIT doesn’t have a selection process per se, though it does offer automatic bids to any team that wins its conference’s regular-season title but fails to make the NCAA Tournament (a rule change implemented in 2017). Every other team is selected as an at-large bid. All selections are made after the NCAA Tournament Selection Show.
NIT winners
Fifty-three teams have won the NIT, with St. John’s leading all with five titles, not including the Redstorm’s vacated 2003 championship. Bradley has the second-most titles in NIT history, with four. Dayton and Stanford have three titles apiece, followed by 13 teams that have two titles (among that group are Michigan and Minnesota, which would have had three titles if not for vacated championships). Thirty-six teams have won the NIT once.
Texas in 2019 was the last team to win the NIT; there was no tournament in 2020 after it was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Traditions of the tournament of masters
Reading 5 min. Views 264
The Masters Tournament, held annually at the Augusta National Golf Club, is one of the world’s most traditional sporting events. Since 1934 it has been called the Augusta National Invitational Tournament. Five years later, the name was changed to Masters, despite protests from Bobby Jones.
Course
Unlike other specialties, The Masters is held annually on the same course – Augusta National, created by the legendary Bobby Jones.
After his playing career, Jones thought about building a golf course. He was looking for a place where he could play without the crowds and the opportunity to realize his vision of the perfect golfing experience.
In 1931, he found a vacant piece of land in Augusta, Georgia. He immediately appreciated the capabilities of the former tree nursery and hired the game’s greatest architect, Dr. Alistair Mackenzie, to help with the design. Together, they decided to design a course that would appeal to anyone – regardless of skill level – and where players had to make multiple decisions with each shot.
The club was opened in 1933. A year later, the first national invitational tournament of Augusta was held.
Green jacket
Each year, the winner of the Masters Tournament is awarded a green jacket to commemorate his victory.
Members of the private club have been wearing green jackets to the tournament since 1937. (Although the original jackets were considered too trendy to wear). Club members bought their jackets from the Brooks Uniform Company in New York.
First Green Jacket presented to a player, given to Sam Sneed in 1949.This meant his membership for a year at the ultra-exclusive National Golf Club Augusta.
Master Winners are to return the jacket to Augusta next year, where it is stored and made available to players when they visit. Some past winners, such as Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, have become active members of the club and are apparently allowed to own their jackets at all times.
Since 1954, the club has awarded crystals for various achievements such as a low circle, holes in one and eagles.Jack Nicklaus owns a record 61 Masters crystals.
Dinner of Champions
Officially known as the Craftsmen Club, the Craftsmanship Champion Dinner tradition was founded in 1952 by Ben Hogan.
Since then, every year the previous Master’s tournament winner has hosted a dinner for past champions. The event usually takes place on the Tuesday before the tournament. The winner chooses the menu and pays for the meal.
The menu turned out to be interesting. In 1988, Tiger Woods chose cheeseburgers and milkshakes.Sandy Lyle, on the other hand, was eating haggis.
Honorary Starters
The first tees to the Masters are scored by honorary starters, a tradition that began in 1963. The first honorary players were Jock Hutchison and Fred McLeod, two men associated with Augusta National.
Hutchison won two major championships during his golf career, the 1920 PGA and the 1921 Open. He was also the winner of the first PGA Senior Championship (1937) held in Augusta; he won the event again in 1947.He performed until 1973.
McLeod was a founding member of the Senior PGA who played in the first four Masters. MacLeod worked until 1976.
Jin Sarazen performed his duties from 1981 until his death in 1999. Byron Nelson served during the same period. Sam Snead served from 1984 to 2002.
After Snead’s death, there was not a single honorary member. Rumor has it that August is waiting for Arnold Palmer to be available.
Sandwiches with pepper and cheese
Like baseball hot dogs, Pimento cheese sandwich for Masters in Augusta. The Master’s sells eight types of sandwiches, but Pimento Cheese is the best choice. While the exact recipe is a secret similar to the secret formula of Coca-Cola, it is made with cheese peppers and many on white bread.
Lifetime Winners Benefits
Bobby Jones thought of the Masters as a gathering of his friends and therefore extended the lifetime exclusion from the tournament for past winners. Most stopped playing when they felt they were no longer competitive. However, others continued to play, although they could no longer play. In 2002, Chairman Master Hootie Johnson sent out letters to past champions asking them to reconsider their participation. The move caused a storm of controversy, with the result that Johnson dropped his request. Previous players can only start if they intend to play at least 36 holes.
Crow’s Nest
Crow’s Nest is a 1200 square foot room in the clubhouse dome that is provided to amateur players in the Tournament. The room is divided into four cabins – three with single beds and one with a double bed. There is also a seating area. Lovers eat at the clubhouse for a week.
Azaleas and Magnolia Lane
The August National Hotel is located on the site of a former tree nursery and is decorated with azaleas, magnolias and many other trees. Azaleas bloom in this part of the country around the same time the tournament is held.
Magnolia Lane is a 330-yard driveway leading to the clubhouse, which is surrounded by 61 ancient magnolia trees.
Butler’s hut and Eisenhower’s hut
The Butler’s Cabin is used by CBS broadcasters for interviews and the Green Jacket presentation. It was first used in 1965.
The Eisenhower Hut was built in 1953 for use by President Eisenhower, who loved the club so much that he visited 45 times – twenty-nine while in office. He became a member in 1948. The cabin appears to have been certified by the US Secret Service.
There are ten cabins in total – although the term “cabin” is not widely used as they are much better equipped than average.
Caddy
Until 1983, players were required to use club-provided caddies. They have since been allowed to bring their carry bags with them, but they still have to dress in the traditional August caddy uniforms: white jumpsuits and green hats. Several Augusta caddies have become minor celebrities, most notably Iron Man Avery, who assisted Palmer on all four of the Masters victories.

90,000 Baseball in Japan | Guide
Sumo is the national sport, but baseball is the most popular
Baseball has many fans in Japan. They play it with enthusiasm and get sick with enthusiasm. A huge number of spectators gather not only the competitions of professional teams, but also national tournaments for high school students, which are held every two years. While at first glance it might seem that Japanese baseball is not that different from the American version, it is “Japaneseized” as much as Christmas or convenience stores. If you come to Japan during the baseball season, which runs from March to October, book your ticket, buy a scarf and get ready to enjoy the sporting battle.
Night baseball games in Japan are a fascinating sight
NPB vs MLB – What’s the Difference?
The Japanese Professional Baseball League (NPB) is the local counterpart to the Major League Baseball (MLB) and is home to top-tier athletes. Baseball is called yakyu in Japan, and it is slightly different from the American game – for example, the size of the ball (in Japan it is slightly smaller) and the fact that games can end in a draw. There are two baseball leagues, Central and Pacific, and both hold their playoffs, and then the champions of both leagues face each other in the annual Japanese championship series.
The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks team shows excellent results in matches every year NPB
Because players have a sense of pride in their cities and regions and remain loyal to their teams, they are much less overbought than in MLB.However, those who leave to play for a team abroad are not considered traitors. Regional pride becomes nationwide as Japanese players demonstrate to the rest of the world the power of NPB. Japanese baseball legend Ichiro Suzuki has an all-time MLB record of 262 hits per season. He is still idolized by fans, even though he hasn’t played in Japan for nearly two decades. When Hideki Matsui signed with the Yankees in 2002, a parade was held in Tokyo in honor of the athlete. Shohei Otani, the 2018 American League Rookie of the Year, caused a sensation in his homeland.
School baseball is extremely popular in Japan.
Koshien National School Competition
Some consider the Japan Summer National High School Baseball and the Spring Invitational Tournament, which is held annually at Koshien Stadium in Hyogo Prefecture, even more important than the NPB tournaments.
The popularity of the population, the number of spectators who gather at the matches, and the opportunity for players to move to the professional team compare Koshien to the National Collegiate Sports Association (NCAA) basketball championships, although the members of Koshien are younger.During the tournament, emotions run high, the whole country is chained to TV screens. The victory opens up career opportunities at NPB, where the best players become a national sensation overnight, with many teams competing to get them. Spring and summer “Koshien” is a large-scale competition that evokes serious emotions and passions. They are unlike any other baseball tournament in the world.
If you came to the Kansai region during a tournament, go to the stadium. An interesting school baseball and very emotional support awaits you: high school students in bright clothes participate in brass bands and cheerleading. Keep in mind, however, that temperatures rise quite high in summer: get ready to spend the day in the scorching heat. As the tournament draws to a close, it becomes more difficult to get tickets, especially on weekends.
Koshien Stadium is the site of the Japanese National High School Baseball Competition
Online Support Group
The driving force behind the support of the athletes is the dedicated group of Oandan fans.Don’t confuse them with cheerleaders, swinging legs, and colorful pom-poms: Japanese cheerleading isn’t so much about performing as engaging the audience. The members of the oandan are dressed in festive clothes with the symbols of their favorite team. They play secret drums, sing the team anthem, wave flags and chant lyrics that change depending on who their team is playing with today or, for example, whose turn it is to hit the ball. It is especially impressive that the oandan do not stop talking throughout the match and support their team to the end, even if they lose.
Japanese baseball fans are some of the most passionate fans in the world.
Regular fans willingly join the oandan. Even those at the opposite end of the stadium are waving their team symbols – small plastic bats, bright scarves, tiny umbrellas – happily singing along and dancing every time their favorites earn a run.
Although there is intense rivalry between the teams, its atmosphere is almost always friendly. There are usually no conflicts between fans. However, if you are sitting in the sector of fans or a support group of a certain team, you should not wear the colors of their rivals and be too active. If you don’t know what to chant, don’t worry: tweeters, balloons and brightly colored flags will help you join the fun.
Have fun in the stands
How to get to the game
There are different ways to purchase tickets for baseball games. The easiest one is to do it on the Internet or in convenience stores. In addition, tickets can be bought directly at the stadiums or at discount stores.
To secure a seat, it’s best to make a purchase in advance: tickets for weekend games are quickly sold out, and it is not easy to get to meetings of old rivals, for example, the Tokyo Yomiuri Giants and Kansai Hanshin Tigers. However, teams usually play six games a week during the season, so try to include an evening or afternoon game on the program.
Tickets for the spring and summer school tournaments at Koshien may be relatively cheap, but it makes you want to arrive early for the match. The stadium fills up surprisingly quickly, even on weekdays when most people have to work. One ticket gives you access to all the games of the day: there can be up to four of them at the initial stages of the championship.
Food
There is enough food and drink in all stadiums. Among other things, there are original Japanese snacks that you are unlikely to find anywhere else.If you feel thirsty, you just need to raise your hand. Young staff members ply up and down the stadium stairs with kegs strapped to their backs and offer frothy ice-cold beers, snacks and soft drinks.
It should be noted that food and drink may be brought with you. Boxes of homemade bento food are common at lunchtime games. Drinks are also allowed if you pour them from cans into plastic cups.
Practice on the baseball grounds
Baseball courts
If you can’t get to the game, but still want to get into Japanese baseball, go to the practice baseball field. They are ubiquitous in Japan. You pay for a batch of balls, usually at least 20 balls. You are provided with a bat, helmet and gloves. Baseball courts vary in level from the simplest to the most technologically advanced. Some of them show lifelike images of famous NPB pitchers throwing their best balls at speeds of up to 150 kilometers per hour. You are in control of the workout: just choose the right speed and swing the bat.

90,000 CSKA captain tied up with the national team. And he did the right thing!
The departure of forward Nikita Kurbanov from the Russian national team is not an ordinary phenomenon. The CSKA captain knows the value of the moment.
Nikita Kurbanov motivated the decision to stop playing for the national team in some detail. The main factor was the desire, traditional for such statements, to give way to a new generation of players, which will implement the large-scale plan of the RBF to change generations.
The 35-year-old Kurbanov, who performs the duties of captain in CSKA, politely rejected the role of a mentor-uncle, explaining that coming to the conditional Olympics at 38 and sitting on a bench means taking someone else’s place.
All these seemingly duty words sound neat and harmless. Everything is correct and as correct as possible. But the fact is that Kurbanov is perhaps one of the few who really understands how important it is to leave on time. It is possible that he feels this moment at the level of instincts. After all, Nikita’s career in the national team developed in such a way that he achieved the greatest success at the level of the youth and youth teams, and with the main team from all major forums he went to only three Eurobasket (2009, 2015, 2017).
Photo: © RIA Novosti / Mikhail Serbin
Taking into account the fact that for invitations to international tournaments our team has to fight to the bone and often unsuccessfully, this is a qualitative achievement. In addition to the failed Eurobasket 2015, where the Russians were unable to qualify from the group with France, Israel, Poland, Finland and Bosnia, although it was enough to take one of the first four places (that is, to win more than one victory), in 2009 and 2017 Russia left the group, and at the last tournament even made it to the semi-final stage.
But all this cannot be compared with the achievements of Kurbanov at the stage of getting a ticket to adult basketball life. At the 2004 U-18 European Championship, Kurbanov with an average of 21.1 points, 10.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists became the best sniper of the tournament and entered the symbolic team of the championship.
At Eurobasket 2005 U-20, Russia with the direct participation of Kurbanov left the group with France, Croatia and Slovenia. Then, at the stage of the quarterfinals, where the groups were again formed, the Russians dealt with the national teams of Israel, Italy and Greece. In the semifinals, our team unhooked Serbia, and in the final they beat Lithuania.
In addition to Kurbanov, this was the generation of Fridzon, Ponkrashov, Voronov, Vyaltsev, Shabalkin, Sokolov, Zavoruev and other guys. This time, Fridzon took over the duties of the best sniper of the national team (12.1 points on average per game), but Kurbanov became the leader in three categories at once: rebounds, interceptions and block shots. The organizers of the tournament appreciated this versatility, and Kurbanov not only got into the symbolic team of the tournament again, but also took the MVP award.
Nikita Kurbanov / Photo: © Panoramic / ZUMAPRESS.com / Global Look Press
And then what happened happened. Due to frequent leases and little playing time at CSKA, it was difficult for Kurbanov to get on the pencil with David Blatt. In the season leading up to the 2011 European Championship, following which Russia took bronze, Kurbanov played on average no more than 10 minutes, gaining 3.5 points and 1.9 rebounds.
Before the London Olympics, with which the Russians left with bronze medals, Kurbanov again did not have a chance to show himself: all the same 3 points and about 2 rebounds. It just so happened that one of the talented and young players at that time, Nikita Kurbanov, was out of the context of the national team, which was then experiencing the best times in its modern history.
There was a great atmosphere in that team, the individual skills of Andrei Kirilenko and Alexey Shved were superbly complemented by chic generalists like Viktor Khryapa and Semyon Antonov, and the coaching thought and enthusiasm of David Blatt drove the team forward, which had no players at the end.
An able-bodied Kurbanov could certainly have been useful in Blatt’s schemes, but then he turned out to be equidistant from the national team, like an island from the mainland. Despite the fact that over time Kurbanov became one of the main players of the Russian national team, he perfectly remembers the time when circumstances – objective and subjective – did not allow him to become a part of a special period in the life of the main team of the country.

Therefore, now, when the new coach of the national team, Zoran Lukic, comes up with the format of the national team, Kurbanov made a logical and timely decision.Nikita does not want to be the circumstance that can prevent some young player from revealing himself, does not seek to heal someone else’s age. Instead of sharing his experience, he steps aside so that the players gain their own – through defeats, through victories, through criticism and praise.
Therefore, the end of a career in the national team is not only a balanced decision of Kurbanov himself, but also a broad gesture on the part of a player who, for one reason or another, could give this team much more.

90,000 What is an Invitational Tournament? – Other 2021
Basketball
The National Invitational Tournament, or NIT, is a basketball tournament founded in 1938, one year before the start of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. He has had considerable prestige over the years and has competed with the NCAA tournament. Both tournaments invite only the best Division I teams in the United States. Eventually, the NCAA tournament became the better-known of the two and now invites 65 teams to its tournament. This is not strictly an invite-only tournament because there are multiple automatic qualifiers in the tournament because they are champions or win tournaments after the season. The total number of potential teams for the tournament is around 347, so even after the NCAA has its field, many quality teams don’t count.NIT is hosting the tournament concurrently with the NCAA, inviting 40 teams from those not selected for the NCAA field. These teams, invited by NIT, are delighted to host the tournament.
Craftsmen
Probably the most famous invitational tournament of any sport is The Masters golf tournament. Bobby Jones, the most prominent amateur of their time, and Clifford Roberts decided to create a tournament to take place in early 1934. It is held annually in April in Augusta, Georgia. This would become one of the top golf championships. Although most golf tournaments have anywhere from 144 to 156 players, the Masters only invites a select group. The field for 2010 will have around 100 players, all of whom are allowed to play by invitation only. While all champions received lifetime exemptions in this area at one time, this practice has been curtailed in recent years as a number of past champions have played far beyond their ability to compete, taking places from worthy invitees.
Down Under Tennis Invitational Tournament
An example of an invitation-only tennis tournament is the annual Medibank International Tennis Tournament in Sydney, Australia. The pitch remains smaller than regular pro tournaments and the crowd attending the event tends to be large due to the quality of the pitch.
Athletics
Many colleges host invitational athletics tournaments. The more prestigious the teams’ field in the tournament, the more likely fans will get a bigger turnout. For example, Texas A&M hosts invitational tournaments, or “competitions” as they are known in athletics, several times a year. Some of the meetings are held outdoors while others are held indoors. Texas A&M invites the best tournament teams to their tournaments and fan attendance is generally good. The crowd will see some of the best sports athletes in the United States perform.
