The Colorado Mesa University Music Camp is held at the Moss Performing Arts Center. What do parents and students need to know about the camp’s logistics?

What are the Top Music Camps for Teens?
As I write this blog, I am preparing for the 10th season of LMF. As the founder of a music festival and one who has attended local, national, and international camps I suppose I felt it was time to share some of what I have learned.
1 – For most youth, summer music camps may be the only way to escape from the distractions of daily life and focus on music.
2 – There are only a handful of “magical” summers where this immersion in music can take place. All too soon high school turns to college, college turns to career and the window for these potentially pivotal experiences closes. See my blog – Why Music Camps for more on this.
3 – Social atmosphere really matters. Friends matter more than music to most teens. Finding a good mix of social interaction and music instruction is one of my main considerations in constructing LMF. Social atmosphere really matters! Finding students who have similar skill-levels, ages, interests, and values is no easy task but when it works it changes lives!
4 – Standards matter! When youth find themselves away from parents, church, and friends who hold them accountable to certain standards and find themselves all of the sudden surrounded by a group of musicians who may or may not have different ideas about drugs, alcohol, sex, pornography, prayer, or foul language then the takeaway from a music camp might be other than what a parent anticipated.
Music camps can be a real test of moral backbone for a young person. In some cases, this comes not only from students but from faculty or older student who may challenge the beliefs of the teen. As a parent, I would ask a lot of questions about what standards are enforced at an camp and weigh heavily what sort of social atmosphere exists at the camp before sending my teenager.
5 – The Music Industry is evolving rapidly. Is the music camp evolving with it? Look at the Billboard Classical Charts and chances are you will find The Piano Guys, Lindsey Stirling, Simply Three, Nathan Pacheco and other cross-over artists up there right next to the major symphony orchestras. Is it enough to learn to play Stravinsky or should we also be teaching modern styles and exposing students to these cross-over artists who are dominating the industry? If you are attending major music camps you essentially testing the waters for a career in music. Shouldn’t that education include what’s happening in the industry right now?
Middle School Music Camp | Colorado Mesa University
Directions for Drop Off and Pick Up:
Colorado Mesa University Music Camp is held in the Moss Performing Arts Center on the southeast part of campus (on 12th St.
near the corner of 12th and North). Students are dropped off and picked up in the parking lot surrounding the Outdoor Program (#9) on the Campus Map.
Check-In:
Everyone checks in between 8–9am on Monday, June 7 outdoors near the parking lot surrounding the Outdoor Program (#9) on the campus map.
Auditions:
Auditions begin at 8:30am. Quietly wait outside your audition room until there is an opening. You may put your cases in Robinson Theatre and warm up.
Required Forms at time of Check-In:
Liability Waiver, Medical Form and Photo Release form. COVID symptom tracking form must be submitted each day.
COVID protocols

Considerations in Choosing a Summer Music Camp

Many times over the course of my career, I’ve had parents ask what they can do to advance their child’s musical skills. One of the experiences I always recommend is attending a summer music camp. There are many types of camps across the country with many types of focus areas, so narrowing these down can be a task in itself. But as music educators, we know going to music camp can help bridge that gap over the summer months, so students will gain new skills and knowledge instead of losing what they have learned over the course of the year.

My experiences with summer music camp started at a week-long camp at a local university near my hometown, where I was able to receive instruction from university faculty and experience college life as a young teen.
As a middle-school kid, this inspired me to continue taking private horn lessons.
Later, I attended New England Music Camp (NEMC) as a camper, and I was fortunate to return as a counselor for two of my summers during college. Then 25 years later, I returned to NEMC, only from the other side of the podium—as conductor for the concert band. These unique perspectives allowed me to see the variety of benefits music camps hold for student musicians.

The American Camp Association (2005) has extoled many benefits of summer camps, including students developing a positive self-identity, social skills, physical skills, thinking skills, and positive values. These are all qualities we foster in our classrooms, and adding the focus of music can only take our students to another level when they return in the fall.
Camp Type
If parents and students are looking for a music camp, they can narrow the long list of camps and summer experiences by determining what they are looking for. Are they in search of a festival experience, a college campus experience, a traditional multi-week overnight camp, or a shorter day camp? Is the student interested in one style of music (such as a jazz camp would provide), or perhaps a gender specific camp (such as what an all-girls band or orchestra camp would provide)? There are many different options to consider.

Music Content
Music content can vary from camps that offer ensembles and lessons only, to those with more classes from which to choose. Many traditional camp programs offer theory, master classes, conducting, secondary instruments, etc., while others may focus on one instrument or area. For example, there are ensemble-specific camps (e.g., rock band camps), or genre-specific camps (e.
g., UArts pre-college jazz program). Also, does the level of music at the camp fit the needs of the camper? The correct match could help foster musical growth for the student.
Faculty and Counselor Backgrounds
The faculty at a camp can make or break a student’s musical experience. They will spend a lot of time together interacting in ensembles, lessons, and classes. The camp should post faculty bios so families can read about their training and backgrounds, as well as their teaching experiences with young musicians.
As counselors at NEMC, we arrived early to camp to take part in pre-training and logistics of our responsibilities that included recreation and cabin living areas. The faculty, staff, and counselors working together under the same philosophy helped make the camp experience for students a great one.
Network
Don’t be afraid to ask the camp administration for parents you can contact for their reviews of the camp.
Ask others in your area where they have gone to camp and what experiences they had. Also, other directors are always a good resource.

Developmental Needs of the Camper
Choosing the right summer music experience relies heavily on what the student is ready for developmentally. Is the student ready to be away from home for multiple weeks, or would they benefit more from being home each night? One of the things I noticed about students living away from home when I was a counselor was that they developed self-reliance. They were able to start taking care of themselves without parental reminders. They learned from their peers, as they read social cues as to what was acceptable or not in dorm or cabin living.
Learning Needs of the Camper
As a conductor at camp, I always felt it was in the best interest of the camper for everyone working with the student to know the child’s strengths and weaknesses, musically and otherwise.
If the student had emotional or learning issues, we could better support the student knowing these up front. I always felt badly for the rare student whose parents felt it was better not to share information that would help lead to the student’s success, rather than having the faculty and staff try to figure out what was going on.
Affordability
What is the price you are looking for in a summer program? Have you factored in other spending associated with the camp experience, such as transportation to and from the camp, supplies, etc.? Many camps have scholarships available, especially for instruments they may need. And there may be other financial aid available. Be sure to check into these options as part of the search.

The “Priceless” Factor
- The camp environment can build a sense of community that students can bring back and make infectious in your ensemble.
- Students can develop long-lasting friendships with other musicians from around the country, as well as make great connections to music faculty who may be able to help them when they look for colleges.
- As many schools narrow curriculum, a music camp experience can provide new opportunities to broaden students’ music experiences by being in ensembles they cannot fit into their schedules at school. At NEMC, we often had kids who were in band at school, but could try choir and orchestra at camp without the confines of the school schedule.
- Students can give technology a break. At NEMC, we found students were happy to give up their technology and connect with other musicians, while enjoying the beautiful campground and sunsets over the lake.
- Being at a music camp allows students to focus on the music and connections, instead of worrying about grades, test scores, etc.

Welcome to the 2021 Baylor Summer Music Camps
For over 40 years, the Baylor University Summer Music Camps have provided outstanding summer musical experiences to students from all over the country. Our summer music camps provide students the opportunity to interact with the world-class musicians and music educators including the Baylor School of Music Faculty and some of the best music educators in the state of Texas. Our goal is to provide experiences for musical and personal growth for every student that attends our camps.
Even though university-implemented COVID-19 protocols will not allow us to host in-person camps this summer, we have put assembled a really amazing virtual music learning experience. The outstanding music faculty at Baylor will be teaching classes and masterclasses, and we have some exciting breakout sessions that we would not otherwise be possible during our in-person camp.
This is a great opportunity to learn more about music and music performance, get to know the faculty at Baylor, learn about our university and traditions, get a virtual tour of beloved campus, and to meet some musicians from all around the state and the nation.

The Summer Chamber Music Institute at East Carolina University invites talented young musicians to experience chamber music at its best. Summer Band Camp
June 21 and 25, 2021. One-day concert band camps for high school and middle school students.
Summer Choral Workshop
June 28-29, 2021. A two-day intensive Summer Choral Workshop geared towards upper-level NC high school students.
North Carolina Suzuki Institute at ECU
July 12-16 2021 (Traditional Student Institute). Classes will be limited and restrictions will be in place. The North Carolina Suzuki Institute provides an opportunity to study the philosophy and teaching of Dr.
Shinichi Suzuki.
Guitar Festival and Workshop
Canceled 2021. This workshop is open to students of all skill levels who wish to acquire or improve skills on the classical guitar. Students will have the opportunity to learn from an internationally-known faculty as well as hear them perform in public recital.
East Carolina Piano Festival
June 27-July 4, 2021. Open to pre-college (grade 6-12) and undergraduate college students. East Carolina Piano Festival brings together internationally acclaimed artists and talented young pianists for a week of exciting concerts, masterclasses and exploration of art of piano performance from varied and wide-ranging perspectives. Young Artist Program participants will work closely with ECU piano faculty and guest artists in an intensive yet encouraging and supportive atmosphere.
Middle School Summer Music Academy | College of Music
The Middle School Summer Music Academy will be an opportunity for talented band and orchestra students from Colorado and around the country to receive world-class instruction in a one-week summer session.
Band and orchestra participants will be placed into a concert band or string orchestra with a nationally renowned conductor. When not in rehearsal, you can expect exciting games and activities throughout the week geared toward teamwork, creative and critical thinking, and fun; a few activities from previous years included skit night, the Amazing Race and visiting Fiske Planetarium on campus.

To secure your spot in the Middle School Summer Music Academy, please follow the registration form link below and complete the online registration form by May 12, 2022. A non-refundable $150 deposit, which goes toward the full camp fees, is required with your registration.

Enrollment and eligibility
The Middle School Summer Academy is open to graduates of grades 6, 7 and 8. Enrollment is open to anyone enrolled in a school band and/or orchestra class. There are no auditions required for enrollment.
Once the registration deadline has passed, all subsequent interested participants will be placed on a waiting list. If a spot opens up, we will notify you of the opening no later than June 1, 2022.

The completed form with essay is due March 1 and awardees will be notified by April 1.
