How did Mikey Powell’s flip shot revolutionize lacrosse creativity. What impact did this iconic move have on the sport and Syracuse University’s legacy. Why did Powell’s audacious play generate both admiration and controversy.
The Birth of a Lacrosse Legend: Mikey Powell’s Flip Shot Unveiled
On April 30, 2004, Syracuse University’s lacrosse community witnessed a moment that would forever change the sport’s landscape. In a thrilling 17-10 victory over the University of Massachusetts, star attackman Michael Powell finally unveiled the much-anticipated move that had been the subject of weeks of speculation and excitement.
With the game winding down and Syracuse in control, Powell seized the opportunity to showcase his extraordinary skills. On an in-bounds play deep in UMass territory, he executed a maneuver that left spectators and opponents alike in awe: jogging forward, Powell suddenly launched himself into the air, performed a complete flip, and upon landing, fired a rocket towards the goal.
The Execution and Immediate Impact
Though the shot was ultimately deflected by a UMass defenseman’s helmet, the sheer audacity and skill required to attempt such a move sent shockwaves through the Carrier Dome. The crowd erupted into a frenzy, recognizing that they had just witnessed a defining moment in lacrosse history.
- Powell’s performance: 6 goals (career-high) and 1 assist
- Final score: Syracuse 17, UMass 10
- Venue: Carrier Dome, Syracuse University
The Artistry Behind the Move: Powell’s Philosophy on Innovation
What drove Mikey Powell to attempt such a daring and unconventional play? The star attackman provided insight into his mindset, stating, “I try and do stuff that nobody does every game. (The flip) was one that takes a lot of guts just to try. I just wanted to show the Syracuse fans that they put their heart and soul into me, and I can give it back.”
This philosophy of pushing boundaries and constantly seeking to innovate is what set Powell apart as a true artist of the game. His willingness to take risks and attempt the seemingly impossible not only entertained fans but also expanded the horizons of what was considered possible in lacrosse.
The Origins of the Flip Shot
Powell revealed that the idea for the flip shot had been germinating for years. As a child, he trained in both lacrosse and gymnastics, allowing him to develop a unique blend of athletic skills. He had previously executed the move during a game in Lake Placid, but bringing it to the collegiate stage at Syracuse had been a long-held ambition.
Reactions and Controversy: A Polarizing Moment in Lacrosse
While Powell’s flip shot electrified the Syracuse faithful, it also sparked controversy and debate within the lacrosse community. The reactions to this bold display of skill and showmanship were as diverse as they were passionate.
Praise and Admiration
For many, Powell’s move represented the pinnacle of creativity and athleticism in lacrosse. The Syracuse crowd’s thunderous ovation and the lasting impact on those who witnessed it firsthand speak to the move’s power to inspire and amaze.
Criticism and Concerns
Not everyone was enamored with Powell’s acrobatics. UMass attackman Tony Ventiquattro expressed his displeasure, stating, “I took a lot of offense to it. Who wouldn’t be offended by it? It’s disappointing that he did it to us late.” UMass head coach Greg Cannella echoed these sentiments, deeming the move unnecessary and arguing that it didn’t enhance Powell’s already formidable skills.
The Coach’s Perspective: Balancing Creativity and Caution
Syracuse head coach John Desko found himself in a delicate position, balancing the desire to showcase his star player’s extraordinary talents with the need to ensure player safety and maintain sportsmanship. Desko’s reaction to the flip shot was a mix of awe and concern: “I just waited for him to come down and keep running and be doing fine. The fans expect certain things, but as a coach, all you can ask for is that he doesn’t get hurt.”
Recognizing the potential for retaliation from the frustrated UMass players, Desko made the prudent decision to remove Powell from the game immediately after the attempted flip shot. This quick thinking likely prevented any unsavory incidents and allowed the moment to stand on its own merits.
The Larger Context: A Career-Defining Performance
While the flip shot undoubtedly stole the headlines, it’s essential to recognize that it was just one part of an outstanding overall performance by Mikey Powell in his final regular-season home game for Syracuse.
- Career-high 6 goals scored
- 1 assist
- Loudest standing ovation during pregame ceremonies
- Consistent crowd engagement throughout the game
Powell’s dominance on the field that day went beyond mere statistics. UMass head coach Greg Cannella, despite his criticism of the flip shot, couldn’t help but acknowledge Powell’s exceptional abilities: “With him, it’s damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Pick your poison. Whatever cliché you want to use, he’s that good of a player.”
The Legacy of the Flip Shot: Redefining Lacrosse Creativity
Mikey Powell’s flip shot transcended the boundaries of a single game or season. It became a symbol of the creativity, athleticism, and showmanship that define the highest levels of lacrosse. The move’s impact on the sport can be seen in several key areas:
Inspiring Future Generations
Young players watching Powell’s audacious play were inspired to push their own boundaries and explore new ways of expressing themselves on the field. The flip shot showed that there was room for artistry and individual flair within the structured framework of lacrosse.
Expanding the Sport’s Appeal
Moments of extraordinary skill and creativity like Powell’s flip shot help to broaden lacrosse’s appeal beyond its traditional base. Such plays capture the imagination of casual fans and can help attract new audiences to the sport.
Sparking Debates on Sportsmanship and Showmanship
The controversy surrounding the flip shot ignited important conversations within the lacrosse community about the balance between respecting opponents and celebrating individual excellence. These discussions continue to shape the sport’s culture and ethos.
The Physical Nature of the Game: Context for Powell’s Artistry
While Powell’s flip shot was the defining moment of the game, it’s important to note that the match between Syracuse and UMass was characterized by intense physical play. The teams combined for 17 penalties and a total of 13 penalty minutes, reflecting the high stakes and emotional intensity of the contest.
Syracuse midfielder Sean Lindsay attributed the physical nature of the game to the significant amount of trash talk exchanged between the two teams. This context adds another layer to Powell’s decision to attempt the flip shot, highlighting the courage required to execute such a move in a heated and potentially hostile environment.
The Game’s Turning Point
Despite the physical play, Syracuse managed to pull away decisively in the third quarter. During this period, UMass could only muster one goal on three shots, allowing the Orangemen to extend their three-goal halftime lead to a commanding six-goal advantage by the end of the quarter.
The Perfectionist’s Critique: Powell’s Self-Assessment
Perhaps the most surprising reaction to the flip shot came from Mikey Powell himself. Despite the crowd’s ecstatic response and the move’s instant legendary status, Powell expressed a degree of disappointment: “It didn’t go in. That was part of the move. The Move’s not cool unless it’s successful.”
This self-critical stance offers a glimpse into the mindset of an elite athlete constantly striving for perfection. For Powell, the aesthetics and difficulty of the move were secondary to its effectiveness as a scoring technique. This dedication to results over showmanship underscores why Powell was such a formidable and respected player throughout his career.
The Pursuit of Perfection
Powell’s dissatisfaction with the outcome of his flip shot reveals the relentless pursuit of excellence that drove his career. It’s a reminder that even in moments of apparent triumph, true champions are always looking for ways to improve and refine their craft.
The Carrier Dome: A Stage for Lacrosse History
Mikey Powell’s flip shot joins a long list of iconic moments that have taken place within the hallowed confines of Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome. As one of the most storied venues in collegiate lacrosse, the Dome has been the stage for numerous unforgettable plays and performances.
The “Air Gait” Connection
Powell’s acrobatics inevitably draw comparisons to another legendary Syracuse lacrosse moment: the “Air Gait” move performed by Gary Gait in 1988. Gait’s innovative behind-the-goal aerial maneuver revolutionized the sport and set a precedent for the kind of creative, boundary-pushing play that Powell would later embody.
The Carrier Dome’s unique atmosphere and passionate fan base have helped create an environment where players feel empowered to push the limits of their abilities and attempt the extraordinary. Powell’s flip shot stands as a testament to this tradition of innovation and spectacle.
A Fitting Farewell
For Mikey Powell, executing the flip shot in his final regular-season home game at the Carrier Dome provided a poetic conclusion to his collegiate career. It was a moment that encapsulated everything that made him a special player: skill, creativity, courage, and an unwavering commitment to entertaining the fans who had supported him throughout his time at Syracuse.
As the Carrier Dome prepares to host its final events under that name, Powell’s flip shot will undoubtedly feature prominently in retrospectives of the venue’s most memorable lacrosse moments. It stands as a fitting tribute to a place that has nurtured and showcased some of the sport’s greatest talents and most innovative plays.
Powell finally showcases The Move in SU win
By Mike Janela
After weeks of hype and speculation, Michael Powell finally debuted The Move.
The Syracuse men’s lacrosse team’s attackman followed through on weeks’ worth of promise in the waning moments against Massachusetts in SU’s 17-10 victory over the Minutemen on Saturday in the Carrier Dome.
On an in-bounds play deep in UMass territory, Powell jogged a few steps forward, flipped in the air, landed and fired a rocket at goal. The ball was deflected out of play by a UMass defenseman’s helmet, but the shot on goal still made for a memorable moment as the crowd went into a frenzy.
Powell said the flip was just a result of his style of play.
‘I try and do stuff that nobody does every game,’ Powell said. ‘(The flip) was one that takes a lot of guts just to try. I just wanted to show the Syracuse fans that they put their heart and soul into me, and I can give it back.’
The move capped a superb day for Powell, who tallied a career-high six goals and added an assist in his last-ever regular-season home game.
Midfielders Sean Lindsay and Steven Vallone contributed three goals and three assists, respectively, but it was Powell’s day.
The departing senior received the loudest standing ovation in pregame ceremonies and continued drawing applause all game.
Despite Powell’s performance, the attempted flip-shot may end up the most lasting memory from Saturday’s victory. The crowd brewed with anticipation each time Powell received the ball and finally got what they asked for when he went air-bound.
Head coach John Desko could only hope for the best when Powell decided to attempt his Ringling Brothers routine.
‘I just waited for him to come down and keep running and be doing fine,’ Desko said. ‘The fans expect certain things, but as a coach, all you can ask for is that he doesn’t get hurt. ’
The move didn’t please everybody, though.
UMass attackman Tony Ventiquattro was visibly upset over Powell’s antics.
‘I took a lot of offense to it,’ Ventiquattro said. ‘Who wouldn’t be offended by it? It’s disappointing that he did that to us late. But what can you do? He did it and it’s done.’
Powell anticipated that his move would generate some animosity and planned accordingly.
Desko removed Powell immediately after the shot to evade any retaliatory action by the Minutemen, and Powell said he saved the move for the end of the game to avoid any retaliation.
‘I’m sure they didn’t like it too much,’ Powell said. ‘But I’m out of here, so there’s nothing they can do about it now.’
UMass head coach Greg Cannella didn’t appreciate Powell’s efforts, saying the move was unnecessary and doesn’t make Powell any better of a player.
Cannella did acknowledge, though, how great Powell already is, particularly in terms of being both a scoring and passing threat.
‘With him,’ Cannella said, ‘it’s damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Pick your poison. Whatever clich you want to use, he’s that good of a player.’
The game was decidedly physical. The teams combined for 17 penalties and a total of 13 penalty minutes. Lindsay said the reason for the physical play was the amount of trash talk exchanged between the Minutemen and Orangemen.
Frustration set in for UMass in the third quarter. The Minutemen could muster only one goal on three shots, turning SU’s three-goal lead at halftime into a six-goal advantage by the end of the third.
But the story of the day was The Move.
Powell said he had been waiting to unleash the flip for a long time. He got the idea at a young age, when he trained as both a lacrosse player and gymnast. After unveiling the move in a game in Lake Placid a few years ago, Powell said he could not wait to try it for Syracuse.
Judging by crowd and teammate reaction, saying the move went over well would be an understatement.
But while most everyone in attendance left the game with visions of a flipping Orangeman in their minds, one person wasn’t quite as pleased with The Move as everybody else – Powell.
‘It didn’t go in,’ Powell said. ‘That was part of the move. The Move’s not cool unless it’s successful.’

Top Carrier Dome Moments: Syracuse Orange men’s lacrosse
It’s the final week of the Syracuse Orange hosting events in the building known as the Carrier Dome. All week long, we’ve been taking some time to look back at some of the top moments in the Dome’s history from across the sports spectrum.
Monday: Football
Tuesday: Men’s Basketball
Wednesday: Women’s athletics
Today, we’re looking at the best moments from the most successful sport in SU’s history: men’s lacrosse.
Air Gait
It is the most iconic image in the history of the sport, authored by one of the greatest players to ever play the sport. And it happened right here in the Carrier Dome.
While the “Air Gait” only took a few seconds, it was much more than just one moment. Gait pulled off the move, in which he ran and leapt from behind the goal, slam-dunking the ball into the cage with one hand before his feat landed, twice during the 1988 national semifinal versus Penn. But even that was just the beginning, as the moment he created ended up transcending the sport in multiple ways.
The move changed the way the sport was played. It literally changed the rules as it was, for a time, banned from the sport. It inspired not only young players everywhere, but also the people who had been involved in the game forever. They had always thought a certain way about how to approach the game. Now they had to think differently.
1988 National Championship Game
Just two days after the “Air Gait” rocked the lacrosse world, Gary Gait and Syracuse finished off their undefeated season at home in the Dome with a 13-8 win over Cornell in the National Championship game. The Gait brothers had a pair of goals each to complete the 15-0 campaign in which the Orange largely steamrolled their competition. It kicked off the first of three straight national titles won by the Gait’s and SU, and is the only Syracuse national title ever won inside the Carrier Dome.
Casey Powell’s 13-point game, Syracuse beats Virginia 22-21
It’s honestly pretty tough to stand out in the incredible history of the Syracuse-Virginia lacrosse rivalry, but that’s exactly what the 1997 matchup and Casey Powell accomplished.
In one of the best games in both Carrier Dome and Syracuse lacrosse history, an amazing crowd of 10,328 (including our own Kevin Wall) witnessed the No. 3 Orange and No. 2 Cavs open the 1997 season with a 22-21 result that immediately achieved legendary status.
Casey Powell scored a program-record 13 points on seven goals and six assists. As if that wasn’t enough, his 13th and final point of the game was also SU’s 22nd goal that was the eventual game winner. Finally, Casey’s on-the-run, behind-the-back bouncer goal around two defenders is one of the most iconic goals in program history, and is the cherry on top of one of the best individual performances we’ve ever seen.
Mikey Powell’s Front Flip
You knew that Mikey Powell had to be involved in this list.
During the preseason before his senior season in 2004, Mikey promised Syracuse fans a “first-ever move” of some kind. In the final regular season Carrier Dome game of his career, he delivered that promise.
With a couple minutes remaining in the game and a commanding lead over UMass, Mikey ran forward with the ball, completed a front flip, and then took a few more steps before firing a shot towards the cage. He didn’t score, but it didn’t matter, because Mikey had already delighted the crowd into a frenzy with what he described as “the move”. The flip itself was enough to make the highlight reel, as Mikey made it look like he had taken off from a trampoline.
I wanted to include this play even though it wasn’t even a goal, the reason being that it represents the way Mikey played the game. Ever the acrobat, Mikey’s quick feet, change of direction, and remarkable stick skills made him one of the most marvelous players lacrosse fans have ever had the good fortune to watch. He routinely used his unique athleticism to make spectacular plays inside the Carrier Dome, and therefore needed to be included here.

Roy Simmons, Jr. Enters the Ring of Honor
In a seminal moment in program history earlier this season, legendary Syracuse head coach Roy Simmons, Jr. was forever enshrined inside the Carrier Dome as his named joined the SU Ring of Honor.
One of if not the greatest lacrosse coach in history, Simmons, Jr. is the man who turned the Syracuse lacrosse program into a perennial national contender and the most decorated program in college lacrosse history.
Honorable Mention
Gait’s 9-goal performance: Let’s complete the 1988 NCAA Tournament trifecta. In the Orange’s opening game of that tournament, Gary Gait scored nine goals in a 23-5 win over Navy in what is still tied for the most goals ever scored in an NCAA Tournament game by one player.
Simmons’ 3OT Winner: The 2018 Army game was a thriller that required a furious Orange comeback, and didn’t end until goalie Dom Madonna fired an almost-full-field pass to hit Ryan Simmons perfectly in stride to fire home the 11-10 game winner in triple overtime. It was an incredible moment for the Simmons family as dad Roy III was on the sideline and granddad Roy Jr. was up in his suite to witness Ryan have his signature moment with the program.
Two home wins over No. 1: The 2011 Syracuse Orange were a special unit. In early March, SU was co-ranked No. 1 in the country with Virginia when the Cavs came to town. The Orange beat them, 12-10, and then did the same to No. 1 Notre Dame with an 11-8 win over the Irish in the Dome in late April. Two wins over the No. 1 team in the country in the Dome in the same season is pretty great. Both games had over 14,000 fans in attendance to put the exclamation point on it all.
So, there you have it. Which Carrier Dome lacrosse moment is your favorite? Which ones are we missing? There have been so many great and exciting games over the years, but we had to stop listing them somewhere. Let us know what you think in the comments.
