Midwest LAX Bash returns to Seymour Lake Park June 2-3
Whether you’re an expert on the sport of lacrosse or know absolutely nothing about it and want to learn, either way, the 2018 Midwest LAX Bash is the perfect event.
A total of 88 youth teams from Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Canada are scheduled to compete in the tournament to be held at Oxford’s Seymour Lake Township Park on Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3.
“These teams that come out, they’re putting everything on the line,” said Brian Kaminskas, who organizes the event with his brother Michael. “It’s extremely competitive.”
Participants will range in age from 8U to 14U.
Games start at 8 a.m. both days. Play ends at 7 p.m. on Saturday and at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
“We’re hoping for good weather,” Kaminskas noted.
There will be no shortage of action as games will be running simultaneously on 16 fields.
“It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun to be out there over the weekend,” Kaminskas said.
“For me, it’s become a passion,” he continued. “I wake up every day (beginning in December) chipping away at the stone until we get that final result. I just love every minute of it. I enjoy putting it together.”
The park is expected to be jam-packed with an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 participants and spectators over the two-day period.
Admission is free for spectators.
“It’s a fun game to watch and learn. It’s a pretty dynamic game,” Kaminskas said. “It’s really a difficult sport to master. It’s considered the fastest sport on two feet.”
“I’ve never sat down with somebody who’s a first-time viewer and not had them say, ‘Wow, I wish we would have had this when I was a kid,’” he noted.
There will be plenty to eat and drink during the Midwest LAX Bash.
“We’re going to have three to four food trucks, for sure,” Kaminskas said.
There will also be vendors selling shaved ice, fudge and candy, lemonade, roasted almonds and kettle corn. “You’ll have an entire buffet,” Kaminskas said.
Lacrosse-related merchandise and other athletic equipment will be for sale as well.
Kaminskas noted this is the fifth year he and his brother have held this tournament at Seymour Lake Township Park.
He was very complimentary of both the parks and rec. staff and the facility itself.
“Those guys out there do an unbelievable job,” Kaminskas said. “You only have to go there once to know it’s one of the best facilities around – the way it’s maintained and the way it’s laid out. The size of it is nice, but the quality of the facility is really the draw.”
