In 2020, the world has found itself in a new reality: people are much more likely to wash their hands, use antiseptics, wear masks and gloves. But large crowds – for example, in public transport – still remain insufficiently safe. Unless, of course, they have cleaning and disinfection systems capable of inactivating bacteria and viruses. And such technologies already exist. Some began to use long before the emergence of COVID-19while others are still being tested.
Air disinfection units
Passenger cars of long-distance trains, Ivolga urban electric trains, EP2D suburban electric trains, as well as Oka and Moskva series metro trains are equipped with air disinfection systems. These systems are produced by a Russian company by order of Transmashholding, which manufactures this rolling stock. Air disinfection systems are based on the ability of ultraviolet radiation to destroy bacteria and viruses.
Each unit contains a germicidal amalgam UV lamp. UV radiation with a wavelength of about 254 nanometers kills bacteria and viruses. But it is not enough just to install UV lamps: space and electrical power are limited in cars, so an integrated approach is used in air disinfection installations.
Over 16 years, we have developed several know-hows, such as catalysts for the operation of germicidal lamps as part of air disinfection systems in passenger rolling stock. These are special chemical coatings of the inner surface of the case and coating of the gratings with titanium dioxide. Thanks to them, the ability of UV lamps to fight germs and viruses increases. It should be noted that such lamps remain harmless to people due to the special design of the installation.

Bactericidal units are mounted in the recirculation air duct. This air is constantly taken from the car into the ventilation and air conditioning system, cleaned and disinfected there, fresh air from outside the vehicle is added to it through the filtration system, and then the flow enters the car again.
Climate control units are designed to process between 500 and 4000 m3 of air per hour, but the usual value is 2500 m3.
If we take for example a wagon with a width and height of 3 meters and a length of 20 meters, then the volume of air in it will be approximately 180 m3. With a unit operating capacity of 2500 m3 per hour, the entire volume of air in the car will be processed 12 times in one hour.
These calculations are approximate. But the sanitary rules for ensuring the microclimate are among the most stringent in the world: you must comply with the standards for the supply and speed of air movement, temperature, and the amount of microflora. And with the estimated capacity of disinfection plants, which differs for different types of rolling stock, these requirements are met.
According to SP 2.5.1198-03, the total number of microbes and viruses in a car should not exceed 2,000 colony-forming units per cubic meter, of which there should be no more than 60 pathogenic strains, which is safe for humans.

The effectiveness of these units, which are now being integrated into all Transmashholding cars, is confirmed by tests: they are carried out in three stages at the All-Russian Research Institute of Railway Hygiene of Rospotrebnadzor.
The first stage is laboratory tests, which are carried out on the model . Check whether the bactericidal installation can ensure the implementation of sanitary rules.
The second stage is full-scale tests in the climatic chamber , installed at the Tver Carriage Works of Transmashholding, which manufactures long-distance cars, as well as the Ivolga electric train. The car was placed in this chamber, it was heated to 30 degrees to ensure the operation of the air conditioner. The tests were carried out with the involvement of volunteers. During the first day, the disinfection unit was turned off. People, like any other living organisms, have their own microflora, which also includes bacteria and viruses, which, in turn, spread through the air. Specialists periodically took air samples, sealed them and sent them to the laboratory. On the second day, the air disinfection unit is turned on, which destroys microbes. Samples are taken at the same frequency, and then a curve is built that clearly shows the dynamics, how, after the start of operation of the installation, the content of microflora in the air reaches the standard values.
The third stage included sea trials with volunteers on the railway infrastructure . In real life, conditions are always different from those that can be simulated in a climate chamber, so this stage is very important. For example, as part of such tests, a specially dedicated passenger compartment car was sent along the Moscow-Adler-Moscow route to obtain the results of comprehensive tests on the operation of installations in passenger cars. On the way to the south, the installation did not work, on the way back it worked. Samples were also taken, which showed the effectiveness of disinfection.
Tests have shown that the installations really work and at the same time they are safe for passengers. Thanks to the use of so-called “ozone-free lamps”, the plant does not produce ozone in quantities that can be determined by special devices, and of course the ozone concentration does not exceed the maximum permissible concentration.
Similar decontamination systems can be used not only in passenger cars – also in buses, tram cars, electric buses, on ships and even in elevator cabins.
Currently, more than 6,000 long-distance carriages, more than 400 electric trains and more than 350 metro trains are equipped with such installations. The new cars, which are now being produced under a contract with Transmashholding, are already equipped with disinfection units.

Water disinfection
The wagons are equipped with a special water disinfection unit, which operates on the same UV treatment principle as the air system. The installation for water that enters the taps in the toilet rooms is located in the under-roof space near the water tanks of the car and it is equipped with a built-in pump that constantly draws water from the tank, pumps it through a flask, inside which there is a UV lamp that kills microorganisms. If someone opens a tap in the car, then he receives water not from the tank, but from the installation, which has just been disinfected.
The water in the tanks is fully processed three times per hour.
Water disinfection units have also been tested. In the course of them, in laboratory conditions, water artificially seeded with microorganisms was passed through the disinfection system. Tests have shown that ultraviolet light works effectively with various types of microorganisms.
When it comes to the disinfection of drinking water, this is a new story for rail cars. Previously, passengers could get cold water for drinking from coolers, which provided for the supply of water from large bottles. In them, the water was also clean and did not stagnate, but constantly changing bottles is inefficient and expensive. A system was needed that would allow drinking water from the water supply system.
As a result, it was decided to use ultraviolet systems in order to disinfect water immediately before it enters the glass, but UV lamps cannot be used, since they “ignite” for a long time – up to a minute, and the passenger does not have to wait. We needed a compact decontaminator that would quickly start working. They found a way out – instead of the usual lamps, they began to use UV-LEDs.
We are the first in the world to use UV LEDs in vehicles. Such LEDs are not a new phenomenon, but they were not previously used for disinfection in transport.

Ultraviolet LEDs in a compact disinfector located inside modern purifiers process small volumes of water, but they are as efficient as possible, and their work is completely invisible to passengers: you press the button and get a glass of clean water.
Cars of the new lineup from the Tver Carriage Works of Transmashholding, which today operate on the Moscow-Belgorod and Moscow-Vladivostok routes, and have also recently arrived on the Privolzhskaya and Zabaikalskaya railways, have such installations. Gradually, there will be even more cars with such installations – FPC ordered more than 3.7 thousand new cars from the manufacturer until 2025.
Surface disinfection
A system that will help destroy germs on car surfaces, such as in the passenger compartment, in the toilet, and in the shower, is still in development.
More than five years ago, UV lamps with a single control unit began to be used in the Moscow metro. When servicing wagons, such lamps are placed in the car, the personnel leave the train cabin and, using the control unit, turn on the lamps and wait for an hour or two when they finish disinfecting the surfaces. Tests show it works. But such powerful installations can be used in the preparation of the rolling stock for the flight, and not on the route.
This system is still under development. A prototype should appear in the fall of 2020, and from 2021 we will start mass production.

An outdoor UV source should only function if the room is unoccupied. For security, the system will use motion and volume sensors. Since the toilet room is small, the volume sensor will make it possible to make a conclusion whether the toilet room is occupied or not.
