To understand why we are salivating over Tom Cruise riding the Kawasaki Ninja h3 in Top Gun: Maverick, we need to go back in time to 1986. This is when Cruise delivered one of his biggest hits – the original Top Gun. In that movie, Tom Cruise is seen riding the Kawasaki GPz900R alongside a fighter jet taking off while the sun sets. ‘Maverick’ cheers on for the pilot, dropping a gear and speeding off into the horizon. This scene marked the shift towards sports bikes for America in the 80s. It made people want a motorcycle that could hold its own against a jet over big, heavy touring machines like the ones Harley-Davidson made.

At that time, the GPz900R was way ahead of its time. It was the first motorcycle in history to cross the 150 mph mark. With an official top speed of 155 mph, it was the fastest production motorcycle that money could buy. But it was not just the ‘fastest production motorcycle’ tag that set the GPz900R apart. It was an engineering marvel on all ends. The GPz used the engine as a stressed member, and the engineers mounted the engine lower in the frame giving the motorcycle high agility with a low center of gravity. This also helped the motorcycle weigh less.

It could do a standing quarter-mile in under 11 seconds thanks to the world’s first 16-valve liquid-cooled in-line 4-cylinder motorcycle engine. With 115 horsepower from a 908cc motor and a crankshaft counter-balancer, the Kawasaki was way smoother, quicker, agile, and faster than every other motorcycle in the market. It was the first ‘Ninja’ from Kawasaki, thus making it the grandfather to the coolest Kawasaki motorcycles ever made.

Top Gun: Maverick Recreates The Charm With A Kawasaki Ninja h3

The makers of Top Gun: Maverick stood true to the essence of the iconic motorcycle scene from the 1986 Top Gun with a Ninja h3 Carbon. The Kawasaki Ninja h3 lineup not only gave us the fastest motorcycle from Kawasaki but also the fastest in the world. In the hands of Kenan Sofuoglu, the Kawasaki Ninja h3 became the first production motorcycle to cross 400 kph (around 248 mph).

Sure, it was the more hardcore, track-only version of the h3, the Kawasaki Ninja h3R, that achieved it, but it did open up a whole new chapter for motorcycle performance, just like the GPz. To avoid a tire blowout, the run had to be done in less than 30 seconds. That wasn’t an issue, as this Ninja did it in 26 seconds!

This feat was achieved while the motorcycle was in a near-standard guise. If you tinker around with it, the Ninja h3 can be turned into a track weapon or even a drag race monster. The awe of the h3 continues when you look at other numbers as well. It is powered by a 998cc in-line four-cylinder engine that is supercharged… in a motorcycle that weighs under 500 pounds!

Why Is The Kawasaki h3 In Top Gun An Iconic Motorcycle?

The power output is 228 horsepower delivered at a sky-high 11,500 rpm, and it makes 104. 9 pound-feet of torque at 11,000 rpm. The Ninja h3 also has a unique exhaust note as the supercharger spins so fast that the blades break the sound barrier every time you rev the motorcycle giving it a chirping noise. How fast does the impeller spin, you wonder? The answer is 130,000 rpm.

And all of this performance comes at an MSRP of $30,500. It is no surprise, then, that the Kawasaki Ninja h3 is as good as a motorcycle can get. And if you want a slightly more relaxed (if you can call it that) sports-tourer version of the h3, then you also have the Kawasaki Ninja h3 SX.

And this is why we love what Top Gun: Maverick has done. While it did recreate the cinematic experience which induces goosebumps from the first Top Gun movie, it stuck to the formula of using an equally iconic motorcycle – the GPz900r in 1986 and the Ninja h3 in 2022. It’s only appropriate!

A Look at the Motorcycles in ‘Top Gun: Maverick (2022)’

Who wears aviators, races fighter jets on a carbon piece of bonkers, and is partially responsible for banking an eye-popping $124 million in ticket sales this past weekend?

If you guessed an adrenaline-charged US navy pilot named Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (played by Tom Cruise) from the recent blockbuster banger ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ you’d be right on the money.  

The movie is spiking theatre attendance across the country – and given the $11,374/hour cost to fly the iconic handful of aggressor aircraft, we’re thinking stratospheric success balances the whole checkbook out…more or less.

Purring in wait next to the lineup of snappy jets (and gulping down significantly less fossil fuel) are the ‘Top Gun’ franchise’s supersport scoots of choice; the indomitable carbon-clad 2022 Kawasaki h3 and original household name, the Ninja GPZ 900R.

“A total of four supercharged Ninja h3 Carbon machines and two restored Ninja GPZ 900R motorcycles were provided to the Top Gun: Maverick production team,” states a report in AutoWeek. 

Hot Cars tells us that the 900R logged 115 hp @ 9800 rpm and boasted “a steel frame, 16-inch front, and 18-inch rear wheels, air suspension, and an anti-dive fork as part of its chassis along with using the engine as a stressed member. ” 

This added to the fact that the Ninja 900R uses the engine as a stressed member (rare for the time), with the neat addition of an aircraft-style fuel cap to replace the usual twisting unit.

Other cool facts include the reality that the Ninja GPZ 900R was the first Ninja of its time – certainly the first ever used on a major film – and took the podium as 1986’s fastest motorcycle in the world.

(We should clarify that first place was NOT given to the 900R for the entirety of 1986; with the Ninja boasting a top speed record of 151–158 mph (243–254 km/h) as of 1984 and the Suzuki GSX-R 1100 clocking in 160 mph (257 km/h) as of 1986 itself, Wikipedia states the gixxer wins out, though it’s likely the Ninja held the crown for at least the beginning portion of 1986). 

So how badass is the Ninja GPZ 900R?

As stated by WinnipegSun, the first Ninja GPZ 900R was “developed over six years in secret, became an instantaneous race-winning success (Isle of Man TT), and put down numbers that would shame most modern performance cars even today. ”

Kawi’s OG Ninja, brought back for another round of our fangirling – and who better to be lounging next to the 900R in all her lean, muscled hyper-glory than the present-day queen of the supercharged screamers (and the replacement for the iconic jet-racing scene), the 2022 Ninja h3 Carbon.

Sporting an ultra-lightweight carbon fairing set, the $32,500 h3 holds a 228hp inline-four package galloping to the record tune of 226.9mph, according to CycleWorld. 

She’s equal parts beast and beauty, with TopSpeed noting that our most recent national landspeed record of 226.5mph (362.5kmph) – with a two-way average speed of 222mph (358.4km/h) – is all thanks to h3’s sibling, the supersonic h3R.

In short, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ doesn’t just sport the dynamic duo of the decade. As a film, it’s a show-stopping homage to our childhood, with the more left-brained results turning in a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A+” CinemaScore.

“[It was] fantastic to see Tom Cruise back in the skies again after 36 years,” said Becca Monahan, commercial director of the Official Charts Company in a report from BBC.
