A former all-star finds a second career in lacrosse
Wall Street just couldn’t cut it after a passion begun in the fourth grade to catch, clear and hit the open man, wouldn’t die.
John Gagliardi, who grew up in Manhasset with a lacrosse stick in his hand, is one of the elite players in the world. He has been a star at every level, including the Johns Hopkins University squad. He is currently anchoring the defense for the professional Long Island Lizards and is a standout on Team USA, the team that represents America in international competitions.
His passion for lacrosse led him to leave a career on Wall Street to start up Maverik Lacrosse.
Maverik launched less than two years ago in Mineola and has since moved to Long Island City where it designs and manufactures lacrosse equipment, “everything except the helmets and cleats,” Gagliardi, 33, said.
One of Maverik’s innovative designs is the “Dynasty” glove, which employs materials that control moisture and has a premium leather palm that increases the sense of holding the shaft of the stick with the bare hand for better control.
Lacrosse is a full-contact sport, so in addition to creating equipment that improves the skills of the athlete, new materials and techniques are also used for ultimate protection, Gagliardi said.
Maverik scored big by securing deals with Lacrosse Unlimited, the sporting goods chain that is a Mecca for Lacrosse fanatics. LU has seven Long Island locations, several stores upstate and outlets in New Jersey and New England. Maverik’s sticks, gloves, pads and other sports- related apparel can also be found in specialty sports stores as far away as California and Florida.
Gagliardi invested a total of about $150,000 of his savings into Maverik, believing there was a niche to be filled and that the niche would eventually lead the equipment field.
It’s a matter of attitude, and looking at the youngsters who are picking up lacrosse, he said.
The people who work at Maverik are committed to the sport and “have been good students and are good role models, but we’re edgier, more in your face, bringing a skateboarder, snowboarder attitude,” Gagliardi said.
The 14 employees of the company “all play at the highest level of the sport and sell products that we use,” the lacrosse star added.
Lacrosse was once confined to small pockets around the country such as the Island, prep schools in New England and Maryland. It’s been stereotyped as an Ivy League, rich kids’ game. But now the ancient Native American game, picked up and refined by French settlers in North America, is breaking out to the masses, Gagliardi said.
He mentioned lacrosse springing up in Orange County, Calif.; becoming big in the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina; making inroads in Philadelphia. Even in football country, places like Tennessee, you can find boys and girls cradling the ball and practicing give-and-go moves.
Gagliardi and his team could be buying into a boom-in-the-making with the demographics of the sport changing rapidly. According to the National Sports Marketing Network, more than 425,000 players participated in organized lacrosse last year, up a staggering 68 percent since 2000.
Maverik has been marketing through print ads in lacrosse publications and also at camps and clinics that Gagliardi and other members of the company run and participate in.
“We knew we could make better equipment and we are,” Gagliardi said. “Kids are receiving our products really well and we’re getting calls all the time for what we have to offer.”

Filmed in Orlando for the World Wrestling program, which was shown on small TV channels around the world. The show was of little importance for the company and there were no top stars at all.

My first match at World was against Gambler, a traveling wrestler I hadn’t seen before or since. His gimmick was based on a parody of Kenny Rogers.
On paper, the gimmick was good, but in reality it was more suited to playing steamboat poker in the style of Maverick. It’s awful to know that my future is in the hands of a man doing card tricks on his way to the ring. I had no idea if he was good or bad, but my self-esteem at that moment was so low that I left the match to him.I bet on Gambler.
Having confidence in yourself means being halfway to success. If you have it, you can’t go wrong. But if it is not there, there will be nothing but errors. By that time, all my previous achievements didn’t matter anymore.
This was my last chance.
The gambler led the match, and I followed him. He was a Potato and Meat wrestler. That is, simple, no frills, but it was exactly what I needed. We had a basic match, like the ones we did during training.No whistle blows, just good story and flawless execution.

I assure you from my own experience.
Once I dreamed that I vomited. When I woke up, I realized that it was not a dream.On that day, I was supposed to perform at 9 am, 11.30, 14 and 16-30. I’ll bet six bucks and my right egg on one of the bookers seeing me hustle to “Disco Duck” at three in the morning in a drunken frenzy, and thought it would be fun to make me fight 4 times the next day. I was not at all funny.
This experience was invaluable. Worldwide shows helped me adjust to the style of fast, exciting matches against guys like Benoit, Eddie and Dean Malenko.
But my music for the release was not very good.After jumping between heavy hits like Ozzy’s “Over The Mountain”, White Zombie’s “Electric Head Pt. 2” and X-Japan’s “Silent Jealousy”, my theme was synthesized and castrated plagiarism from Journey’s “Only The Young”.
I have always attached great importance to the music that represented me, as it set the tone for my character and the mood in the ring. The song was not suitable for either one or the other. It would have worked well for an 80s teen comedy commercial, but for a wrestling rocker, it was just awful.To make matters worse, I was watching Basketball Highlights on TBS one night and heard my music in the background. This important intro of mine was actually part of the standard TBS music library.
“Jericho needs music to come out? Okay, play Basketball Best Moments # 12”
But in a way this song suited me perfectly. It was as boring as my character. I was a typical good guy. without a pronounced charisma, who won some matches, lost some.And it was dangerous for me.
I was protected by canned viewers from the World, but when I wrestled on Nitro on Mondays in front of real fans who paid for tickets, it didn’t work anymore.
Nitro is Bischoff’s answer to WWF Monday Night RAW. His idea was to air his program face to face with competitors, with the same ad slots. This led to one of the brightest periods in the history of wrestling. These were interesting times for the fans, and it was also the main reason Eric hired me.He wanted to stake out as many talented guys as possible and then began to think about how to use them.

Following Chris’s advice, I went out and bought myself some nice clothes.At least that’s what it seemed to me. I couldn’t find dress pants that fit, so I bought poorly fitting jeans and a wrinkled black shirt with closure to the throat. I looked like a five-year-old who got dressed before going to Sunday school, so shorts and a tank top were probably the best options.
As I was taught in wrestling school – I met everyone who was in the locker room. Most of me received a warm welcome, but no one had any idea who I was. I walked over to Lex Luger and thought it might help melt the ice by talking about going to a gym in Atlanta that he owned….

I knew that Chris and I could blow the roof off, like we did at the J-Cup, but when Sullivan ordered to build a match on 80 percent of Benoit’s moves and 20 of mine, the bubble burst.
There was no point in building any important match this way. Especially with the debut of a guy who “likes the boss.” Maybe Sullivan didn’t like the fact that he called me to a test match after I was already hired? Or maybe he was planning a new storyline and Chris was supposed to look strong? In any case, my courage fell below the plinth.
Chris and I ignored Sullivan’s directions and made a good equal match. After the match, Sullivan said, “The match was good, only you attacked too much.”
