Maryland women’s basketball reveals its 2021-22 Big Ten schedule

The Big Ten announced Maryland women’s basketball conference schedule. The Terps finished conference play last season 17-1 and won the conference outright as well as the Big Ten championship.

The Big Ten was one of the deepest conferences in all of women’s basketball last season with five teams ranked in the final AP Top 25 poll with an additional two teams receiving votes.

Maryland is set to face Indiana, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers twice.

The first conference opponent the Terps will face is Rutgers away on Dec. 5. They will meet the Scarlet Knights again on Jan. 27 at home. Last season, Rutgers ended its season 14-5 and fell to No. 11 BYU in the NCAA Tournament.

Indiana, the 2020 preseason favorites of the conference, finished the season 21-6. The Hooisers’ season ended when No. 3 Arizona defeated them in the Elite Eight of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. The Terps will face Indiana on Jan. 2 away and will close out the regular season facing them at home on either Feb. 25 or Feb. 26.

Michigan finished its 2020-21 season with a 16-6 record. Maryland defeated the Wolverines once last season, 88-66. Michigan’s season ended in the Sweet 16 when it lost in overtime to No. 5 Baylor. The Terps will face Michigan on Jan. 16 at home and Feb. 20 away.

Ohio State finished the 2020-21 season with a 13-7 record however, it handed the Terps their first and only conference loss of the season. Maryland fell to then-No. 17 Ohio State, 88-86. This year, Maryland will have a chance to redeem itself against the Buckeyes facing them twice, once on Jan. 20 away and once at home on Feb. 17.

Maryland will face Penn State at home Jan. 6 and away on Jan. 30. The Terps defeated Penn State to clinch sole possession of the Big Ten regular-season title last season. Penn State closed out its season 9-15 winning just six of its conference games.

The Terps will face Purdue on Dec. 8, Northwestern on Jan. 23, Nebraska on Feb. 6 and Wisconsin on Feb. 9 at home.

Maryland will travel to Illinois on Dec. 30, Minnesota on Jan. 9., Michigan State on Feb. 3 and Iowa on Feb. 14.

The Terps are returning all five starters from a year ago and their top eight scorers last season. Maryland led the nation in scoring, averaging 90.8 points per game a season ago. Brenda Frese’s experienced group is poised to go on a big run this winter.

Duke Blue Devils Preview

To reach the Final Four, the Blue Devils had a favorable road, though it wasn’t without its challenges. After defeating High Point in the first round, Loyola Maryland fought to the end with Duke, leading with just over a minute left, and looking to pull off the upset. Duke star-freshman Brennan O’Neill found the goal for the fourth time at that moment, and forced overtime, where the Blue Devils Prevailed.

After a rather rough outing in the first round against Loyola, O’Neill found his groove as he’s had all season as the team’s leading scorer with 44 goals. His 2.75 goals per game is a key part of Duke’s average score of 15 goals per game. Opponents are averaging 10 goals per game against the Blue Devils this year.

Duke was last in the National Championship Game in 2018 where they lost to Yale, but hope O’Neill and the team can bring back the program’s first title since winning back-to-back in 2013 and 2014.

Maryland Terrapins Preview

The Blue Devils have most recently been to the National Championship Game, but between these teams, the Terps are the most recent to hoist the trophy. From that 2017 squad, Jared Bernhardt still remembers that moment and has seemed fueled by it in now his fifth year with the team. Bernhardt received the extra year of eligibility as a senior from the NCAA’s decision to offer athletes another year in response to COVID-19’s impact on 2020.

Bernhardt was going to use that extra year to move into football but decided to move back to the lacrosse field, much to the Terps’ benefit. He’s leading the nation in goals per game at 4.5 and became the program’s all-time leading scorer this season as well. He had five goals in the team’s Elite Eight overtime win over Notre Dame.

NCAA Women’s Golf Championships Central

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The No. 20 Maryland women’s golf team will compete in the 2021 NCAA Championship at the Grayhawk Golf Club, May 21-26. This marks the first appearance in program history. 

The Terps head into the championships coming off a stellar season, placing in the top three teams in all seven tournaments competed it. Maryland broke and set new program records throughout the spring, including their lowest 18-hole score of 278, a hole in one by Charlotte Lafourcade (the first since 2006), and a new under par record of -11 set by senior Virunpat (Ou) Olankitkunchai. Ou was a key component for Maryland throughout the season, earning top-20 finishes including first and second place within each event she competed in.  

The championship format consists of all 24 teams and 12 individuals completing 54 holes of stroke play, with the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team competing for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match play competition and the 72-hole stroke play individual champion. The top eight teams then compete in match play for the team national championship.

The Big Twenty: Maryland men’s basketball wins the national championship

NBC Sports Washington is rolling out the 20 biggest stories in DMV sports in the past 20 years. Here is No. 4.

Maryland’s men’s basketball team won the NCAA national championship in 2002, which fits nicely into the 20-year window of NBC Sports Washington’s The Big Twenty project.

But to understand how important that accomplishment is, you need to go outside that window to 1990. For multiple violations under then-head coach Bob Wade, Maryland was placed on three-year probation, banned from the postseason for two years and barred from appearing on television during the 1991-1992 season. The program, fresh off the tragedy of Len Bias’ death in 1986, had hit rock bottom.

Enter Gary Williams. The Maryland alum returned to College Park in 1989, unsure of what punishments were coming. His task: Build Maryland into a nationally competitive program while dealing with Duke, North Carolina and the rest of the ACC blue bloods, all while handcuffed by major sanctions. You know, no big deal.

Build the program he did. By 1994, the Terrapins were back in the NCAA Tournament and the Sweet 16. By 1998, Williams had the Terps as high as No. 2 in the AP poll. And just when the fanbase thought the program had plateaued, in 2001 Williams guided Maryland to its first Final Four appearance.

The loss to Duke in that year’s NCAA semifinal was a bitter pill, but Williams had almost his entire roster returning. That included a starting lineup of Juan Dixon, Lonny Baxter, Steve Blake, Chris Wilcox and Byron Mouton. Most of them had been overlooked in high school. All had been passed over by other power conference schools for varying reasons. Williams built his program around these diamond-in-the-rough, chip-on-the-shoulder players with something to prove. His roster was full of them in 2002. It was a perfect fit at Maryland, a program constantly ignored in the rugged, tradition-rich ACC.

Maryland ran through its 2001-2002 schedule with ease. With a balanced lineup and a rock-solid eight-man rotation, the Terps went 15-1 in the ACC. That included an 87-73 blitz of No. 1-ranked Duke in February. They earned a top seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Maryland beat a UConn team with Ben Gordon, Caron Butler and Emeka Okafor in the Elite Eight to make its second straight Final Four. A week later, it knocked off Drew Gooden, Kirk Hinrich, Nick Collison and Kansas to make the title game.

On April 1st, 2002, the Terrapins beat Indiana, 64-52, to claim the school’s first national championship. Dixon led the way with 18 points and keyed a 22-8 second-half run to put the Hoosiers away. He earned first-team All-America honors. His retired jersey currently hangs in Xfinity Center. Williams was named ACC Coach of the Year. The floor of Xfinity Center is now Gary Williams Court.

The lasting image of the title game is Dixon heaving the ball to the Georgia Dome rafters as the last seconds ticked off and his teammates celebrated. For Dixon, the championship was the final
highlight of a record-setting career in College Park.

For Williams, it was validation. He had built the team his way, with players in his image. For the program, it was the concluding step of a journey that started in 1990.

Maryland had climbed out of the deepest valley to reach college basketball’s highest peak.

Virginia Wins 2021 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (theACC.com) – Virginia captured the seventh NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship in program history on Monday, holding off a late Maryland rally to prevail, 17-16, at Pratt and Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut. The fourth-seeded Cavaliers (14-4) won their second consecutive national championship and denied third-seeded Maryland (15-1) an undefeated season when goalie Alex Rode saved Luke Wierman’s potential game-tying shot from point-blank range with five seconds left to secure the win.
 
Current ACC membership collectively now owns 25 NCAA men’s lacrosse championships, including nine of the last 13 and 14 total since 2000. A current ACC school has played in the NCAA Championship game in 18 of the last 20 tournaments (34 times in that span).
 
With Boston College earning the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship on Sunday, the ACC won both lacrosse championships for the first time since 2016, when North Carolina swept the men’s and women’s titles. This is the seventh time in ACC history that the league has held the national championships in both men’s and women’s lacrosse at one time (1999, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2021).
 
The Cavaliers join North Carolina (1981-82) and Duke (2013-14) as ACC programs to win consecutive national championships. Prior to joining the ACC, Syracuse won three straight titles from 1988-90 and back-to-back crowns in 2008-09.
 
Freshman Connor Shellenberger and senior Matt Moore led UVA with four goals and two assists apiece. Shellenberger was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Jeff Conner added a hat trick for the Cavaliers, while Rode made 12 saves.
 
With 33 goals between the teams, the game matched the 1975 and 1983 title contests as the highest-scoring championship games in NCAA men’s lacrosse history.
 
The Cavaliers twice built leads of at least four goals, only to see the Terrapins come storming back each time. UVA scored six straight goals in the first half to take an 8-4 lead in the second quarter, but Maryland responded with three consecutive goals. UVA stopped the momentum swing on a Payton Cormier goal with 25 seconds left for a 9-7 halftime edge.
 
UVA stretched its lead to 16-11 on a Moore goal with 11:04 remaining in the game, but Maryland rattled off four straight goals over three-minute span to cut it to one with 3:57 remaining. Moore stopped the run with his fourth goal with 3:35 left for a 17-15 edge. Maryland’s Anthony DeMaio scored with 10 seconds left and Wierman won the ensuing faceoff and ran straight downfield and fired off a shot that Rode denied to finish off the dramatic win.

The issue with the spectators at the last moment was decided in favor of the fans – but they can nominally fill no more than 25% of the seats in the stands.Their actual number will be even smaller: the number of people involved in each specific match, including players, coaches, referees, team representatives and technical staff, will be subtracted from a quarter of the capacity of a particular arena.
