Last week, the American media vied with each other ascertaining the fall in the rating of President Barack Obama.
In December it reached 54%, but eight polls in March showed that it has fallen below the 50% mark, although not by much so far.
On the face of it, the fall is far from catastrophic, although that hasn’t stopped McClatchy from describing its latest poll as a sign that “Obama is head over heels in the eyes of voters.”
Obama’s opponents are pleased to note that now his rating is lower than it was at the same time for all seven US presidents after Truman, who were elected for a second term, not counting George W. Bush.
A poll by McClatchy and Marist College showed that 45% of respondents positively evaluate Obama’s performance as president. Negative – 48%. For comparison: in November last year, the activities of the president were approved by 50%.
The overall rating – that is, an indicator of Obama’s popularity – is now 48% to 48%. In December, this proportion looked like 54% to 44%.
The end of the honeymoon
Political scientists name three reasons for the fall in Barack Obama’s popularity. First, the election is long past, and Obama is no longer being compared to Republican Mitt Romney, but viewed on his own, says Lee Miringhoff, director of polls at Marist College.
This dropped him in the eyes of some respondents.
The second reason is the end of the “honeymoon” that traditionally happens for every president after winning an election and sooner or later comes to an end. For Obama, it began to expire in February.

The third and main reason is the dissatisfaction of the respondents with the state of the economy and the country as a whole. The Washington Post published the results of its poll under the headline “Obama is falling in the eyes of Americans who view his economic course more and more negatively.”
It would seem that the US economy is somehow on the mend. Stock quotes continue to go up so stubbornly that skeptics began to talk about another soap bubble and foreshadow that it will burst soon.
A few days ago, a popular actress, a native of Kyiv, Mila Kunis, appeared on the CNBC business channel and announced that she had started investing in stocks. Liberal Daily Beast stock commentator Daniel Gross responded with a mocking headline, “When celebrities like Mila Kunis talk about stocks, it’s time to get out of the stock market.”
But the share price, according to the same Gross, has doubled over the past four years, and for most ordinary people this is good news. Even better is the latest news on progress in the labor market.
On the other hand, I constantly hear complaints from friends about the economic downturn, even though it officially ended back in 2009.
Disbelief in a brighter future
According to a Washington Post survey, only about half of respondents believe that the economy has really started to rise. According to a McClatchy poll, 62% (against just 34%) believe the country is out of recession.
Only 22% of those polled by the agency believe that things will go better for them in the coming year; 41% believe that everything will remain the same; 36% think things will get worse for them.
In December, the Washington Post asked who Americans trust more to revive the economy. Obama was then trusted by 18% more respondents than the Republicans. Now he is only 4% ahead of the opposition in this regard.
