What does the phrase “like a champ” mean. How is this idiom used in everyday language. Where did the expression “like a champ” originate. Why has this phrase become so popular in modern slang.
The Origin and Evolution of “Like a Champ”
The idiom “like a champ” has become a common phrase in modern English, often used to describe someone performing exceptionally well or handling a situation with great skill and ease. But where did this expression come from?
The phrase likely originated from the world of sports, where “champ” is short for “champion” – an athlete or team that has defeated all opponents in a competition. Over time, its usage expanded beyond athletics to describe excellence in any field or activity.
Early Usage in Sports
In early 20th century boxing matches, commentators might describe a fighter who was dominating the bout as “fighting like a champ.” This usage then spread to other sports, praising athletes who displayed exceptional skill or determination.
Expansion into General Language
By the mid-20th century, “like a champ” had begun to appear in non-sporting contexts. It became a colorful way to compliment someone’s performance or attitude in any challenging situation.

How ‘Eat Like a Champ’ Inspires Kids to Live Healthily
In August 2020, Carrefour France launched their ‘Eat Like a Champ’ campaign, locally known as ‘Mange Comme Un Champion’. In total, there are 105 stickers to collect; Carrefour’s customers receive a sticker booklet for free with every €30 they spend on groceries.
Additionally, French shoppers can buy a beautiful collector’s album for €2.90 to store all their stickers in and discover more about the champions and their favorite healthy recipes.
We created this campaign because we strongly believe that children should be stimulated to lead healthier lifestyles, and sports heroes are the perfect ambassadors to bring this message to them. Through this fun campaign, children are inspired by their heroes to acquire new knowledge, skills, and habits regarding healthy food. When this happens, chances are high that they will embrace the message, which will stick with them.
Let’s dive into more insights on UNGA’s ‘Eat Like a Champ’ campaign.
Why it is important to stimulate children to lead more healthy lifestyles
Childhood obesity has become a serious, increasing problem over the years. Currently, on average, 30% of all children in European countries are either overweight or obese, which is leading to serious short- and long-term problems. Overweight and obese children are more likely to stay obese as they enter adulthood, and it is estimated that at least 2.6 million people die each year as a result of being overweight or obese (Source: WHO).
Childhood obesity affects children’s lives in various negative ways, both physically and psychologically.
- Physically, it often leads to symptoms such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, which are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. It can also increase the risk of impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. Moreover, it can create breathing problems, such as asthma and sleep apnea.
- Psychologically, it often has a negative impact on children’s social lives, their emotional well-being, and their self-esteem. It is even associated with poor academic performance and a lower quality of life.
Environmental factors, lifestyle preferences, and cultural environment play pivotal roles in the increasing prevalence of obesity worldwide. In general, overweight and obesity are assumed to be the results of an increase in calorie and fat intake. There is also supporting evidence that excessive sugar intake through soft drinks, increased portion size, and a steady decline in physical activity have a significant impact (Source: Childhood obesity: Causes and consequences—NCBI).
Parents and caretakers can play an essential role in preventing childhood obesity. They can do this by providing healthy meals and snacks, by encouraging daily physical activity, and educating their children about proper nutrition. Healthy meals and snacks provide nutrition for growing bodies while modeling healthy eating behaviors and attitudes.
However, parents and caretakers need support in their efforts to prevent childhood obesity. Retailers who offer consumers primary access to fresh food and ingredients and want to do more for their community can pitch in as part of their commitment to families.
Meet Easton: “Growing Like a Champ!”
Riley kid Easton Prahl
On a Thursday in January, my husband and I went to what was supposed to be a routine ultrasound to find out the gender of our baby. That visit led to unexpected news of an unknown severe heart defect. Immediately we were given a referral to Riley Hospital for an echocardiogram. Riley responded with an opening for our echo appointment the following Tuesday! We were thankful then to have an appointment scheduled so quickly, and have been continually thankful for Riley due to the outstanding care that our child has received.
We met with Riley Pediatric Cardiologist Dr. Anne Farrell during our initial echo appointment, and our baby boy was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). This is a severe heart defect in which the left side of the heart did not develop correctly. Though we were shocked, Dr. Farrell’s detailed explanation and comforting words gave us hope.
For the next few months, we traveled to Riley for many appointments, preparing to receive the best care possible for our baby boy and learning all we could about his condition. We were nothing but impressed with the staff at both the Fetal Center at Riley Children’s Health and the Maternal-Fetal Medicine clinic. They prepared us for what would happen every step of the way, and made sure his birth went as smoothly as possible.
At 12:36 a.m. on May 12, after a planned induction, Easton Matthew came screaming into the world! As we expected, he went straight to Riley. He had his first surgery (the Norwood Operation) at just six days old. During the surgery, we received regular updates and met with Easton’s wonderful heart surgeon at Riley, Dr. Mark Rodefeld, both before and after the procedure. The surgery was a major success!
Easton is three months old today and growing like a champ! We are home with him now in Elkhart, Indiana, but we have regular communication with Riley through the At Home Care program and calls with Riley Cardiology Nurse Practitioner Dana Hartman. The continued connection has been reassuring to us as we await Easton’s next surgery and stay at Riley.
During Easton’s journey, we have met many doctors, nurses, and other Riley staff who have carefully watched over him. Everyone has been overwhelmingly helpful and supportive. We are thankful for them all.
Did you know? Donor gifts have provided significant funding to expand the Fetal Center and Maternal-Fetal Medicine programs at Riley, helping expectant mothers with complex pregnancies.
Jenna Prahl and her husband Kevin are Riley parents from Elkhart, Indiana. They also have a 2-year-old daughter, Noelle. Jenna is a special education teacher at an elementary school and Kevin is a mechanical engineer. They enjoy being outside, playing games, and spending time with extended family.

Watch this ‘nonswimming’ bird swim like a champ, giving clues to evolution of penguins | Science
European starlings look nothing like penguins. But these chunky black birds are natural-born swimmers, a new study reveals. The finding may hold key clues to how their bigger black-and-white cousins—and scores of other water-loving birds—gained their ability to swim.
The work is “exciting” and gives scientists a “new direction” for studying the evolution of swimming in birds, says Frank Fish, an integrative biologist at West Chester University who was not involved with the research.
The transition from air to water was a gradual one for most aquatic birds, scientists believe. Land-based flyers began by splashing—and eventually swimming—on the surfaces of lakes, ponds, and other bodies of water. (For example, when necessary, eagles, ospreys, and songbirds can swim along the surface.) Many adaptations later, some birds began to not only stick their heads under water, but also plunge the rest of their body downward.
This shift from swimming to diving evolved at least 10 times in birds over the past 100 million years, giving the world puffins and penguins. But none of these transitions was thought to be easy: Water is 800 times denser than air and 60 times as viscous.
To explore how birds may have first taken to water, University of Montana, Missoula, graduate student Anthony Lapsansky and colleagues collected nine starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), choosing them to study because they are common invasive birds in the United States. There was no evidence that this species could swim.
First, the researchers placed the starlings on the water of a 3.7-meter-long, 3500-liter tank. “I thought they would flap along the surface of the water to get out,” he recalls. “But they kept flying right out.”
So the researchers decided to dunk the birds in the water, simulating a fall from the sky. To their surprise, the starlings swam just as well as diving birds (see video above), Lapsansky reports this week at the virtual annual meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology. They gracefully moved their wings up and down as they sped to the surface.
The starling’s stroke is remarkably similar to that of puffins, murres, and other avian divers. Until now, most researchers have assumed the puffin’s slow stroke rate and flexed wings (which generate lift like helicopter blades to propel the bird through the water) were unique adaptations to life underwater. But these “unadapted” starlings did likewise, suggesting the behaviors are either innate or result from how the density of water limits how they can move, Lapsansky says.
Fish agrees. That starlings immediately flex their wings suggests the birds need to do this to overcome water’s increased density and to avoid overstressing their shoulder joint, he explains. They already know how to flex their wings to get around obstacles. Also, like puffins, the starlings used their feet to change direction, so they share another trait with diving birds.
Lapsansky and his colleagues have also found another nonswimming species, the house sparrow (Passer domesticus), swims just as well as starlings. The bottom line, he says, is that it may not have taken nearly as long as scientists thought for the transition from air to water; it’s likely that many birds winged it.

90,000 “They gave the ball, they said – push. ” As a Paralympic champion, Khinchagov ended up in athletics from wrestling – Sport
TOKYO, September 5. / TASS /. Albert Khinchagov, champion of the Paralympic Games in Tokyo in shot put, completed his formation in sports in freestyle wrestling. The athlete, who was born with a birth injury, even resorted to tricks to stay in the wrestling team, but later he had to make a choice between wrestling and athletics, and Khinchagov was right. At home, in North Ossetia, he was greeted as a hero.
On this topic
“We were greeted with Ossetian pies, Ossetian beer – non-alcoholic, they killed a lamb. Of course, even put on weight, but how much I missed our food. And our water – I can’t get enough of it, enjoy it, how delicious it is. On the first day a man 150 was, but this is not enough, later we will do kuvd, there will already be 400-500 people, “the athlete said.
The first minutes at home, of course, he will not be able to forget: “I got off the plane, and there are so many close ones, so many relatives. Emotions, of course, were simply overwhelming, because they were all with me in Tokyo, they watched, ached. And lucky in time, I spoke in the evening session, which is two hours our time. Only my mother did not look – she never looks, goes out into the street and walks back and forth. “
TASS managed to communicate with the athlete’s mother Elza Khinchagova, who joined the conversation: “Everyone looked, and I went outside and only put my ear to the window, listened to what they were saying, and walked away. And then they all jumped out and yelled: “Champion! Champion! “This will never be forgotten, of course.Of course she cried. “
Love to fight and forced withdrawal
Khinchagov was injured at birth: “So my mother didn’t really want me to go into sports, she just didn’t even let me in. And I saw free wrestling – that’s all. This is the Caucasus, we all love wrestling, and I still follow my friends who are in freestyle wrestling. ”
“It was scary to let him go to the sport, very scary,” the champion’s mother explained. “When he began to engage in freestyle wrestling, the doctors said that if his arm breaks, it will no longer grow.I forbade it, but it happens that you come home from work – and he runs away, only his “tail” and I see, he did not leave the sport, stretched. And then she herself and the leotards began to buy him, and wrestling shoes. “
- Putin congratulated Khinchagov on winning the shot put competition at the Paralympics
- Khinchagov said that he almost never got out of the training camp before the Paralympics
“In Ossetia, whom you don’t point your finger at is a champion, and most often in wrestling, and when I’m at home, always with our team at the base,” continues Khinchagov.- I am friends with Zaurbek Sidakov, he became the Olympic champion – a wonderful sympathetic guy, you look at him – and you get inspired. ”
To gain a foothold in freestyle wrestling, Khinchagov even had to resort to tricks: “I had to pull myself up, but how could I pull myself up? me further, and then I told everyone that just the hand did not grow together, it broke, they say. ”
Khinchagov became the second in the republic at the junior level among healthy athletes, but the older he got, the harder it was, and it’s true that the athlete performs with a serious injury, opened up – you can’t hide an sewn in a sack: “I didn’t pull with them, I had to think , what to do next, and eventually came to the track and field athletics arena, began to run cross-country and saw the Paralympians – there were coaches Boris Koroev, Valery Gagloyev, but I was ashamed to approach. And when everyone left, I made up my mind, said – so and so, I have an injury since birth, and they gave me a 4-kilogram ball: “Push.” The next day they talked to me, they said – if you work, there will be a prospect. “
Friends unanimously advised Albert to go to Paralympic sports, and the choice was made. But he still loves wrestling and even tried to combine the two sports. “But athletics has become my job, my bread, I set myself a goal, because my dream has always been the Games. So my dream grew into a goal,” the athlete said.
“Dark Horse”
And yet, Khinchagov did not waste so much energy on the wrestling mat: “It was easier for me to adapt in athletics. Wrestling gave me a lot – a base, upbringing, in a good sense, sports arrogance. And the advice of friends helped – back in the 11th class, my friend Chermen Kubesov, he took bronze in Tokyo, and Gocha Khugaev – our first Paralympic champion, I look up to him – they told me that there is such a sport, go. what an athletics. “But you see how it all turned out. “
Elza Khinchagova admitted that when her son qualified for the national team for the Games, emotions were overwhelming. “I was worried myself, but tried not to touch him, she only said:“ Son, if it doesn’t work out, no matter what place you take, don’t worry, don’t worry, you have everything ahead of you. ”And he told me:“ Mom, I’ll win a medal, and not to chill out food. “And after his words, I calmed down, I realized that without a victory will not return,” – she said.
On this topic
At the Tokyo Games, Khinchagov played practically in the role of a “dark horse”: “Before the Paralympics, I had only the European and World Championships, and when you are not particularly well known, you can be surprised.Everything went very well, I was saturated with this victorious energy, and such a desire to go forward that I returned to training, although the coach does not let me in yet. I will fight 100 percent to get to Paris. ”
By the 2024 Games in Paris, the sanctions against Russian sports should end, which means that the national team will perform there under its own flag and with the Russian anthem. In Tokyo, during the victory of the Russian, he played a fragment from the First Concerto for Piano and Orchestra by Pyotr Tchaikovsky.”Emotions were overwhelming, and I imagined that this is the Russian anthem playing, when I hear it, it gives such strength. And we have such a form – with a flame in the colors of the Russian flag, our outfitter Forward is a” striker “, such an honor to wear – all the fighters go crazy with it, wear it with pride, “- said Khinchagov.
Now the athlete’s dream is a world record: “Although I am still far from him – 17.53, I still have 15.78 the best result. But I will strive for this.”
90,000 11 ways to think like a champion
1.Don’t focus on confrontation
“Winning the competition depends first and foremost on you – on your skill, preparation, concentration,” says David Fletcher, a sports and personal performance psychologist at the University of Lowborough.
The advice seems strange, because the point of sport is precisely to compete and win. But Fletcher insists that the most effective tactic for athletes is to focus on themselves rather than competing with others. “Michael Phelps, the most prolific Olympic champion in history, was eventually removed from the podium as well,” recalls the psychologist.”If he gave too much importance to always be first, this feeling would crush him.”
2. Set Attainable Goals
Motivation plays a key role in our psychological readiness to go all the way. “If we feel that we are strong in something, we will definitely want to continue doing this,” David Fletcher is sure. – The secret is to find a balance between ambition and attainability of goals. If you set the bar too high, you run the risk of wasting energy without getting the desired result, and ultimately disappointed in yourself. If you set yourself a sparing regime, you will not be able to reach a new level of achievement. ”
3. Love the “chill in your stomach”
Physiological feeling of stress is unnerving before important events. But with a certain mood, this feeling can be useful. “Tension is a sign that the goal is important, that you are tense and ready to go,” says Fletcher, adding that you need to get it right.
4. Remember the taste and smell of victory
According to David Fletcher, some athletes can learn to evoke a winning mood through smells and sounds – including outside of competition. For example, some athletes associate this feeling with the scent of lavender or a particular song. Smells and sounds evoke a strong response in the associative areas of the cerebral cortex. “This is the best way to quickly evoke a memory or experience associated with triumph,” explains the expert.
5.KNOW YOURSELF
“The main advice I give any athlete is to get to know yourself the best you can,” comments Andrea Faull, a sports psychologist at the University of Worcester. – To perform the exercise cleanly, you need to have a good idea of your level, your capabilities. This is the only way you can be sure that you are ready. ”

How many times did you try to kill Adolf Hitler? There are different estimates, but it is definitely clear that the number of attempts on the life of the leader of the Third Reich is in the tens. One of them happened 77 years ago and had a great chance of becoming successful, and therefore the last. Among the key figures of that day was Heinz Brandt, an Olympic champion in equestrian sport, who had a great cavalry career before World War II, following in his father’s footsteps. The rider’s talent helped him become the champion of Germany in the show jumping discipline, and at the 1936 Olympic Games in the German capital, win gold in a team tournament on a horse named Alchemist. The individual performance left Brandt in 16th place, with the hosts confidently winning the overall medal standings. Alas, the Olympics itself, for obvious reasons, turned out to be extremely politicized. Berlin was chosen as the venue for the competition back in the days of the Weimar Republic, so after the Nazis came to power in the country, the Games became a kind of springboard for various political gestures.Soon after such a memorable tournament, Brandt waited for another promotion, but the main growth in his officer status came during the Second World War. The Olympic champion worked in the General Staff, the High Command of the Wehrmacht Ground Forces and in 1943 was already a colonel. At the same time, a couple of months before receiving this title, Brandt almost became an accomplice in the assassination of Hitler. Yes, the equestrian sports star was involved in another attempt to assassinate the Fuehrer. He accompanied Hitler on his visit to Smolensk, where Army Group Center was located. On the way back, one of the leaders of the conspirators Henning von Treskow and his adjutant handed Brandt a parcel, which allegedly contained alcohol, lost in the dispute. However, instead of the exquisite liquor, there was a bomb inside. The explosives did not work, probably due to damage to the mechanism. The plane successfully returned to Germany, but the essence of the deadly parcel was not revealed. The conspirators remained in the game, continuing their attempts to eliminate Hitler. In the summer of 1944, it almost succeeded. Fate in detail The July 20 conspiracy is also called Operation Valkyrie. It is important to understand that the plan of the same name is the official concept of the Reich’s actions in case of emergencies, including uprisings and coups d’état. “Valkyrie”, agreed by Hitler himself, the conspirators sought to turn in their favor, having previously eliminated the leader. The explosion was supposed to kill the Fuhrer. The performer is Colonel Klaus von Stauffenberg, who lost his left eye, right hand and a couple of fingers on the left on the African battlefields. In July 1944, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Reserve Army. The “killer” gained access to key meetings with Hitler’s participation. At one of them, the detonator was activated. However, on July 20, the meeting at the Wolf’s Lair headquarters was slightly shifted due to the visit of Benito Mussolini and was moved from the bunker to the hall of a wooden building nearby. The hustle and bustle and the potentially lesser efficiency of the explosion clearly did not work in the favor of the conspirators. However, Stauffenberg believed in success and, under the pretext of hearing problems, approached Hitler as much as possible. Leaving the briefcase with the bomb under the massive table, the colonel left, explaining this by a phone call.It was then that Brandt entered the game, unknowingly. Moving to the vacant space, he stumbled upon Stauffenberg’s briefcase and moved it from his feet to the other side of the wooden table support, which in this case became a kind of shield for Hitler. When the explosion took place, Stauffenberg believed that the Reichskanzler was dead. However, Brandt’s manipulations probably did save Hitler’s life. The striking force was less, the Fuhrer escaped with numerous wounds. Brandt, who also took a big blow on himself, was left without a leg.The doctors were unable to save him. The officer died the next day and was soon posthumously promoted to the rank of major general. The Olympic champion not only saved Hitler, but thereby helped to launch the flywheel of the most severe repression. The conspirators, although they tried to disperse Operation Valkyrie to the victorious, by the evening of the same day they lost. The participants in the coup were arrested, the main defendants, including Stauffenberg, were shot at night. The incident was investigated with particular rigor and attentiveness to any connections with the conspirators. The reprisals against other convicts were cruel. For example, they were hung on piano strings by a meat hook, which made death extremely painful. The procedure was filmed for Hitler. The Gestapo continued to work on this assassination until May 1945, and over time, sympathy for the organizers of the assassination in German society grew. Nowadays, the participants in those events on the part of the Resistance are usually remembered as heroes. In Germany, relevant actions are regularly held, and Chancellor Angela Merkel speaks out with trepidation and respect about the creators of the July 20 conspiracy.

May 9, 1:20 pm Martial arts Victory or crematorium. Jewish boxer survived in Auschwitz and became a legend 90,000 From Novotroitsk to Tokyo. How the champion Evgeny Rylov came to Olympus | SPORT
Russian swimmer, a native of Novotroitsk Yevgeny Rylov won two gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics. He covered the distance of 100 meters on his back in 51.98 seconds, breaking the European record. This gold became the first for Russia since 1996 in this sport – in 25 years. The champion received the second medal for the 200-meter swim, also setting a new Olympic record. The whole country and residents of Orenburg, especially with bated breath, watched our athlete become a living legend.
On the back along the “Wave”
Rylov’s mentor – Honored Coach of Russia Andrey Shishin – in the past worked in the Volna pool in Novotroitsk. There he taught the future Olympic champion swimming from the age of five.
– Zhenya was trained for victories from childhood. By the way, I won the Children’s Olympiad on my back! – said the champion’s mentor.
Coach Andrey Shishin moved to Moscow in 2006. Until 2007, Eugene honed his skills in Novotroitsk. His coach of this period, Olga Pavlova, by the way, is also now training young Novotrojans in the Volna pool. And the news of Rylov’s victory is a balm for her heart. And how glad Shishin was, who saw Zhenya climb over and over to the pedestal:
– In this sport, where time passes by seconds, there must be luck.Of course, this is a colossal work of an athlete, the knowledge of a coach. But here you can not do without luck. Zhenya had already come to the Olympics in Rio, got to the finals along the central lane with the best time, but came only third.

Overtake Murphy
Rylov’s victory is proof that even if you were born far from the Garden Ring Road, very far away, you have every chance to inscribe your name in the world history of sports. By the way, the trainer-teacher periodically visits his small homeland – in Novotroitsk. He wished the Orenburg swimmers to pick up and support the successes that the federation of this sport is developing.
– The success of the Olympic champions begins in the cities of Russia. Support for sports at the regional level is indispensable. To get into the national team of the country, you need a very good preparation. Olympic athletes living in their small homeland should also have good conditions so that they can train constantly, – said Andrei Gennadievich.
Thanks to the programs to support sports youth of the All-Russian Swimming Federation, our athletes achieve excellent results. For the swimmers of the national team, decent conditions have been created today, top coaches of the country work with them.
The Russian school of swimmers is developing. The Russian national team in the Tokyo basin won five medals – two gold, two silver and bronze. Our Yevgeny Rylov became the real star of the Olympics. In the American form of swimming in the 200-meter swim, he passed the American Ryan Murphy.By the way, they have a long-standing rivalry with him. At the last Olympiad, a foreigner snatched a victory, this time our fellow countryman was the first.

Record number of tests
Competitions in Tokyo are held in restricted mode. Halls without spectators. Distance, masks, daily tests. The Russian national team was detained at the airport for 5 hours upon arrival. The tests were taken again. It’s all the time and nerves. Due to covid restrictions, athletes did not leave the limits of the Olympic ancient.Russia did not fly under its own flag. The fans were worried that it might affect the morale … But ours are hard to break!
“We are performing under the emblem of the Russian Olympic Committee, without the national flag and anthem,” explained Andrei Shishin. – But the decision has been made and there is nowhere to retreat. We accept the fight, went to show our skills and win.
And let’s hope our athletes will hear the anthem in the near future!
COMMENT:
“For me, Novotroitsk is associated, of course, with the joy of the first victories,” says champion Evgeny Rylov.- Once upon a time it seemed to me little that this large pool could not be crossed. With a busy schedule of gatherings and competitions, it is very rare to visit my first “Volna” pool, but I am happy to transfer souvenirs, photographs and talismans from major competitions to the museum by the pool.

One of the benefits of working with Donald is the ability to observe him in everyday life. Over the years of our acquaintance, I got to know both the real Donald and the public Donald and discovered that they were the same person. Moreover, in life he is larger and more significant than in public.
Working with him, I watched him think, listened to him, when his thoughts turned into words and words into actions. In most cases, the thoughts, words and actions of this person logically continue each other. Perhaps that is why he is straightforward and harsh. Donald is straightforward precisely because his thoughts, words and actions form a single whole and do not contradict each other.
Many of us have friends who turned out to be three different people. They think one thing, say another, and do a third, their actions are contrary to both thoughts and words. I have seen people like these achieve some success and live contradictory lives.
In the early 1980s, I lost my first big business. Losing everything was terrible, just the way we usually imagine it. I lost everything and considered myself a failure. My biggest loss was the loss of faith in my own strength. I knew what to do, but for some reason I just didn’t do it.My work on myself in the next decade boiled down to gaining power over my own thoughts. To return to the correct way of thinking, I began to read and listen to the sayings of great people … then to make them my own. Slowly but surely, my business life began to gain momentum, and I again became a winner.
In 1987, just after the fall of the stock market, I got my hands on Donald’s book The Art of Making Deals [1]. In order to read it, my wife and I put off everything. The world around us was crumbling, and we got the opportunity and advantage – through the thoughts, words and actions of Donald – to see the world of business. By 1994, my wife Kim and I were finally financially free. At our leisure, we often remember how Donald’s book inspired us, made us go forward, despite the chaos that was happening around.
In 1997, while reading his book The Art of the Comeback, we were convinced that we were listening to the thoughts of a great man. Few people are able to openly speak the truth, even fewer people are ready to write about their mistakes, lessons and endless attempts.
In 2004, Kim and I met Donald for the first time. Of course, we did not know each other, but he was incredibly kind to us, and we thanked him for sharing his thoughts with us in his books. In late 2006, Donald and I published a book called Why We Want You To Be Rich [2].
Driven by a common interest in the fate of people and a desire to pass on our knowledge to them, Donald and I wrote this book, predicting the financial crisis that broke out in 2008.
It is a great honor to write the foreword to this book, because by teaching us the mindset of champions, Donald gave me and my wife a great gift – a gift he brings to the world . .. a gift more valuable than money.
Robert Kiyosaki
In my life I have seen many people striving for success. I am one of them and, although I am still far from the top, I have already managed to achieve significant results. For this reason, I am often asked the question about the “secrets” of success. I don’t think there are any secrets in this area, although each of us would like to get a certain formula that could help him personally.
This book contains ideas that set a certain direction of thought that, in my opinion, can make a person successful. They helped me. This is one of the sides of myself, deeper and more thoughtful, revealing my fundamental attitudes and how they are applied in our life.My image, circulated by the media, is that of an outgoing, confident, sometimes arrogant, but usually honest person. They love me because I am harsh and straightforward. They don’t like me because I am harsh and straightforward. And I am successful due to the fact that I can sweep aside all the insignificant and quickly get to the main thing.
My book “Leadership” is just an example of this approach to life and business. I find a problem, think it over, take it apart, and come up with a formula that can solve any similar problem.I have always found it especially worthwhile to spend time and energy on a thorough study of the issue, to get to the bottom of it and offer a unique and effective solution.

The reigning champion of the Dakar Rally, which has just kicked off in Jeddah, Ricky Brabeck of the Monster Energy Honda Team was able to outrun his factory teammate Joan Barredo to lead the final leg of the “leg 0” prologue to the 2021 race that kicked off today in Jeddah. …
MOTOGONKI.RU, 2 January 2021 – Motorcycle riders have opened the route. The outsiders of last year’s race were the first to go to the almost 11-kilometer warm-up special stage, and the leaders of the Dakar-2020 closed the starting list.Ricky Brabeck started last as the winner. Pablo Quintanilla from the Husqvarna works team and Toby Price from KTM left right in front of him on the route.
The current Dakar champion – Ricky Brabeck, Monster Energy Honda Team
Before Brabeck reached the bivouac in the vicinity of Jeddah, 95 competitors managed to finish. The fastest time to that moment – 6 minutes 7 seconds passed by Joan Barreda Bort, 7 seconds lost to KTM Factory Racing rookie Daniel Sanders and 8 seconds – by Yamaha factory team rookie Ross Branch. But Ricky Brabeck was the fastest: the reigning champion was able to cover 11 km in 6 minutes 1 second.
An important change in 2021 was that the “zero stage” time was multiplied by four (x4), so 6 minutes turned into 24 minutes – and they went to the general classification
Prologue turned out to be super-fast, which is immediately evident from the results: the average speed on hard ground was almost 150 km / h. This short SS has also become a kind of qualification, according to the results of which the positions at the SS1 start on Sunday will be distributed. Also, it became clear that the organizers of the rally-marathon were not joking when they promised a much more difficult test than it was a year ago: not all pilots who started passed this “simple” special stage without losses.
KTM Factroy Racing rookie Daniel Sanders
Here are the first reviews of the route that A.S.O. prepared for the participants of the 2021 race:
Ricky Brabeck (1): “Today’s SS was going well. Quite short – just over 10 km. Such, you know, it is difficult to lose something, but it is impossible to get an advantage either.A real warm-up to shake off flies from the helmet. But we know for sure that we are ready for tomorrow’s start. Joan and I will open the starting list, I hope everything goes well. It’s time to dine – and to the solemn podium! ”
Joan Barreda Bort, Monster Energy Honda Team
Joan Barreda (2): “When I came to the finish line first, it made me happy. The prologue was quick, but not easy. The first part of the path ran along the river, and it was not easy to collect all the control points. Then, a rocky valley began, where there was a high speed, but you had to look both ways so as not to screw up. At first, the new roadbook confused me a little, but then I figured it out step by step. The first contact with the 2021 route is not bad, definitely positive. ”
Veterans of the KTM factory team did not top the list this time around. Toby Price, 2-time Dakar champion, is in 9th place. Fastest KTM – Australian rookie Daniel Sanders in 3rd. Matthias Walkner lost an unacceptable amount of time in this short test and was 18th behind Yamaha’s Adrien Van Beveren. The loss of 30 seconds, which turned into two minutes of lag at once, is a lot on the first day!
Matthias Valkner lost over 30 seconds to Ricky Barber on the first day
Matthias Valkner (18): “Pretty fast 11 km stage with an average speed of almost 160 km / h – wow, that was cool! But on New Year’s Eve there was a real downpour, and the track has changed a lot. The river swelled, the rocks became more slippery. I didn’t want to risk it, because there is still 8000 km ahead. Lost 10 seconds because of this – slowed down. But there were other reasons why I lost to Brabeck for more than 30 seconds. Unfortunately, they grew to 120 seconds after the animation. Tomorrow SS1 start at 1 am, and the first SS will not be very long. I try not to mess things up in the early days, I use all the opportunities. We must return the feeling of speed, get used to the racing pace and new navigation. I think we’ll get involved quickly. ”

In another RBC-Sport article, read the story of an unbending boxer who entered the ring to fight death. His life was as ringing as a gold coin and as terrible as the bubonic plague.
Meet, here is Barney Ross – an orphan, world champion, war veteran, drug addict and hero.
Father’s death, acquaintance with Al Capone
On December 13, 1923, sixty-year-old Rabbi Isidore Rozovsky stood at the counter of his own grocery store on Jefferson Street. Grocery was a reliable stronghold of his large family, bringing in income enough to live comfortably.
Trade was going well that winter day. People, smiling affably at the owner of the shop, came from the cold into a warm room to warm up and buy fresh apples, lemons, oranges and other fruits, which Isidore had so much that they could feed a whole block.
The doorbell announced the arrival of new customers. Two dark-skinned guys came up to the counter with apples for five cents. Isidore smiled at the young men, but in the next instant his face was distorted.Weapons appeared in the hands of the visitors. “Hand over the cash register,” he heard the muffled, hoarse voice of one of the robbers.
Coming to his senses, Isidore looked coldly at the criminals. He was not going to just give away the money that he earned through honest labor.
Further events developed rapidly. The rabbi screamed and immediately fell, hit in the chest. The murderers, having completed their black deeds, rushed out of the shop, near which a crowd of onlookers had already begun to gather. It was not possible to detain the bandits – no one began to pursue them, and many were not going to chase the fugitives, instead of which they looked at the crime scene with curiosity, slowly spreading the most ridiculous rumors.
Berl, his fourteen-year-old son, fell to the head of the dying rabbi. “Everything will be all right,” whispered Isidore. Tears ran down Berl’s cheeks, and the boy clenched his fists painfully. He saw the guys running up the street from the shop, shooting at his father. He will never forget this scene.
Isidore died in hospital. Sarah was shocked by what had happened and ended up in the hospital with a nervous breakdown. Small children had to be sent to an orphanage. Berle vowed that someday he would get them out of there, make enough money to glue the family together, shattered into small pieces like a precious vase pierced by a bullet.
Tragedy shook the boy’s faith in God. He began to drink and smoke, dropped out of school and fell under the bad influence of a gangster city – he began to steal, got hooked on an underground tote. Everything that Isidore feared so much happened to his son, whom he tried to educate in accordance with strict Jewish canons.
Berle, who once dreamed of becoming a teacher, has gone wild. He became angry and never let himself be hurt. He fought a little, every time imagining killers fleeing justice up Jefferson Street.
One day, Al Capone, familiar with the details of the crime, will tell his new assistant Berl: “I would have thrown the scoundrels into a sea teeming with sharks. ”

Ascent to the boxing throne
Burle’s soul rested in the Howard Kid’s gym, where he dropped in when he was free from street fights. The future world champion watched boxers spar in a dozen rings – mostly amateurs, although it happened that professionals also dropped in here.Berl, holding his breath, studied with the masters, drew conclusions.
Once he broke down and asked Howard to give him a chance to prove himself. “You’re too skinny,” the owner of the establishment snorted contemptuously, glancing up at the skinny kid. Dave Shade, a seasoned boxer, a frequenter of the bad places of the city, puffed on a cigar on the sidelines. Chuckling, he offered himself as an opponent.
Berl quickly jumped into the ring and fearlessly attacked the pros. He fought as best he could – awkwardly swinging his fists in all directions and, of course, not getting where he needed to. All the knowledge gleaned from the battles he saw disappeared somewhere at once.
Biting his lip offendedly, the beaten boy left the hall, shaking with laughter from the audience, which clearly liked the performance. But soon Berle returned and with burning eyes announced that he intended to try his luck again. Howard chuckled – well, how can you refuse a show that will surely attract even more clients to his audience.
Shade, without taking his cigar out of his mouth, climbed into the ring, confident that the boy would once again expose himself to ridicule. But only now Berl was boxing smartly – hitting where, as his intuition told him, the thug Dave was supposed to move. And soon the small, still childish fist reached its goal – the cigar smacked on the floor of the ring, and Shade looked in bewilderment at the desperate guy. Howard shrugged indulgently, but still promised the persistent teenager a warm-up fight.
This was the start of Berle’s brilliant career. Each fight was special for him. He said that he boxed for his father, imagines that every opponent is the murderer of a rabbi.Hatred gave strength, but fortunately she was sighted. Berl never went ahead, he used all the art of boxing to win. The son of Isidor Rozovsky has never been knocked out in his entire career, although he became the world champion in three weight categories.
The first amateur fights made Berl famous. He, however, did not bathe in cream – it was still very far away. As trophies, the young man received, basically, things – watches, jewelry, clothes, which he immediately handed over to the pawnshop. So that the mother, who had already left the hospital, did not find out about the occupation of her son, I had to take a pseudonym – Barney Ross, who stuck to him tightly. The young man was now called Berl only by his family.
Barney Ross was initially forced to box illegally, deceiving not only his mother, but also the state athletic commission. Sixteen-year-olds were forbidden to enter the ring, but Barney calmly broke this law. Actually, breaking the laws in the “city of evil” was the norm.
On February 14, 1929, Chicago was shaken by the tragedy that went down in history as the Valentine’s Day Massacre. Inside the warehouse, disguised as a garage, the police found seven corpses – here Al Capone’s competitors were shot at point-blank from machine guns.
The massacre was striking in its cynicism. The famous gangster skillfully removed all suspicions from himself, and the case became a classic. Barney said that what happened “means more to me than to anyone else.” They say he personally knew everyone who was shot that day.
Apparently, the rabbi’s son plunged headlong into the criminal life of Chicago. And no wonder. A talented boxer who lived in a city where every day someone died from a gangster’s bullet was sponsored by one of Al Capone’s assistants.
Still, Barney was able to give up on his dark side. He showed himself in the ring, and as a result, the boxing organization Golden Gloves became interested in the guy. Barney became her first world champion. Subsequently, Joe Louis, Mohammed Ali, Mike Tyson and other great boxers will join the ranks of the Golden Gloves legends.
Al Capone gave Barney Ross his freedom. A new life has begun.
World champion in three weight categories
Ross became famous not only for his tactical superiority over rivals, but also for his granite chin, capable of withstanding an atomic bomb.He lost only four fights in a long career, not possessing any supernatural physical characteristics.
Barney fought his first championship fight in 1933, just three years after becoming a pro. At stake were two belts – light welterweight and lightweight. And also money, and rather big. Ross was on the verge of fulfilling his cherished dream – he wanted to quickly reunite a scattered family, buy a house and live happily, in abundance. To do this, it was necessary to beat a dangerous opponent – Tony Canzoneri. The Italian simply underestimated the upstart and, monkeying in the ring, lost by split decision. The mother of the new champion Sarah cried with happiness – she had already forgiven her son for the choice he had made.

Three months later, in New York, where the Italian was supported by fans, a rematch took place, and Canzoneri’s nerves finally let down – he beat Ross several times below the belt and again lost on points. Twenty-three-year-old world champion Barney Ross began to reign in two weight categories at once, and a year later he received the title in welterweight.
To do this, he had to withstand the frenzied onslaught of Jimmy McLarnin, a boxer with the affectionate nickname Child’s Face, but not at all affectionate fists. The press dubbed their fight as another “punishment of a Jew” – McLarnin was known for defeating famous boxers of this particular nationality. But Ross beat him too. McLaren was furious and demanded a rematch. As a result, they entered the ring three times against each other, while the Irishman lost twice and soon left boxing altogether.
In the professional ring, Barney Ross had 82 fights and won 74 times with four draws and four defeats. One of his most striking fights was the last, when on May 31, 1938, a Jewish boxer entered the ring, where Henry Armstrong, nicknamed Killer Hank, was waiting for him.
Black Armstrong was considered the favorite in the fight against the aging champion, who, moreover, did not lead the most healthy lifestyle outside the ring – he drank and smoked like an avid sailor.
Armstrong’s style was merciless – whoever went to battle with this “machine” felt in the shoes of one of the three hundred Spartans who fell under the onslaught of the Persian army of many thousands.Few of Henry’s rivals escaped the knockout.
The first four rounds were an equal fight, and then Armstrong began to beat Ross, beat mercilessly, using the entire arsenal of his rich attacking technique. Barney was no longer saved by any tactics, his defense became a gateway for Henry’s fists.
Very quickly, Ross’s face became a bloody mess. The seconds intended to stop the fight ahead of schedule, begging the referee for this, but the legendary champion was not going to put such a shameful end to his glorious career and asked the judge not to make hasty decisions.Arthur Donovan heeded his pleas – the beating continued.
In the thirteenth round, Armstrong asked Ross how he was doing. “I’m a corpse,” – only he could mumble Barney with swollen lips and, losing his last strength, leaned on his opponent. Killer Hank staggered back and said, “Just hit with your left. But if you try to hit from the right, you are definitely dead! ”
Yet Ross stood his ground, ending the fight like a real man. However, he still has many fights to fight in his life.Only now the rivals will no longer be wearing gloves, and some of them will be much more terrible than Armstrong.

Hell at war, drugs and death
When the Japanese, who supported Hitler’s Germany, unexpectedly attacked Pearl Harbor and partially destroyed the American fleet, Ross immediately applied for military service. He could have stayed on the sidelines, since the draft age was “overdue” by two years, but he preferred to fulfill his duty – the country needed heroes.
They wanted to use him as a living symbol. Show the soldiers that he inspires them to heroic deeds with his stories. So did Jack Dempsey, who did not participate in hostilities, but only drove around the army garrisons to raise morale. Ross was not happy with this passive role. He wanted to fight, to be a bright banner, after which the Americans would boldly go to the enemy, hearing the whistle of bullets and explosions of grenades, but not being afraid to give their lives for their homeland.
Before going to war, Barney with a powerful blow knocked down the sergeant, who dared to recite anti-Jewish slogans in his presence. They wanted to judge the former boxer, who did not recognize the authorities, but in the end he was enrolled in the second division of the Marine Corps. Barney went to Guadalcanal Island. Japan tried to build an airfield here and capture strategically important positions, but the Americans did their best to prevent the imperial troops.
Fate has brought Ross to a large inhospitable mountain range, covered with swamps, ancient volcanoes and gloomy rocks, like a boxer after a long fight – wounds. The American Marines who came here suffered from a humid climate, malaria, and, of course, from the fierce resistance of the Japanese, who never surrendered and, according to their principles, fought to the last bullet.
On November 19, 1942, under cover of night, a small detachment of Marines, which included Corporal Ross, was combing the area. Suddenly he was attacked by superior enemy forces. I had to retreat in a hurry. The Japanese felt superior and were preparing for an easy victory.
Ross was very tired, he heard exclamations in a foreign language, he felt that death was somewhere near. He, however, managed to find shelter – a small trench. Three of the corporal’s colleagues, who were in the hideout with him, were injured, so that Barney could not count on their full help.Only he was able to resist the Japanese. He had several rifles and hand grenades at his disposal.
Clutching his rifle, the corporal waited for the Japanese to appear. When an ominous figure came into view, he immediately fired. Barney did not know whether he hit the enemy or not, but from that moment a siege began, which lasted thirteen hours.
Outbursts from explosions, clods of earth flying into the eyes, groans of the wounded, pain burning through the body, aches in all extremities, swamp stench … Everything mixed into one heap, and it was already difficult to understand where the dream was and where the reality was.Bleeding to death, Barney tried to think of his father, who had died many years ago. With parched lips, he silently conversed with him, remembering the words of a Jewish prayer. It was the image of the rabbi that helped him not to go crazy that night and to meet the dawn.
If he had died in that battle, the entire group of Marines would have been destroyed. Knowing this, the corporal fought fiercely, as he always did in the ring, even if the opponent was much larger and stronger than himself. It was a new fight with Henry Armstrong, only now he was either winning or becoming dead.
Barney fired more than four hundred rounds of rounds at his opponents and threw about twenty grenades. The wounded helped the corporal in only one thing – they reloaded their rifles. For more, they simply did not have the strength.
When all was quiet, Ross did not immediately realize that he had come out of this hell alive. But the corporal had suffered too many wounds, his helmet looking like a sieve from the shrapnel. He cautiously climbed out of hiding. Near the place where the Americans were holding the defense, a mountain was formed of the corpses of Japanese soldiers who had not managed to destroy one enemy.
Being in a semi-conscious state, Barney put on the shoulders of a comrade, who weighed forty kilograms more, and went to the military unit. Nobody else from his squad survived.
In that terrible battle, the world champion killed twenty heavily armed Japanese.
There is another exciting story. Barney Ross was one of the Marines who served on the legendary RT-109 torpedo boat under the command of Lieutenant John F. Kennedy, the future president of the United States. That boat, sailing past the Solomon Islands, sank after colliding with a huge Japanese destroyer. The surviving crew reached the nearest island on the wreck of the ship. John F. Kennedy and Barney Ross, who were good friends, went out on a daily basis, they had to swim from island to island, which required good physical fitness. One day they came across a box with hieroglyphs. In the box were … Japanese sweets, which partially saved the group from hunger. And the next day, the sailors managed to establish contact with the natives, and, most importantly, with their help they sent a message to the base.Kennedy carved a message on a coconut shell asking for a ship, and the Americans soon found themselves in their military unit.

True, there is one nuance in this story. Barney Ross was indeed listed on that boat, but it was the namesake of our hero, hence the confusion – the boxer’s biographers are already tired of giving denials, and journalists are still sending the wrong person on board the Kennedy boat.
Well, Barney Ross, about whom our story is going, received the Silver Star, Purple Heart, President’s commendation and the rank of sergeant for his feat.
Only now there was no way to return health. The wounds received in that meat grinder were too severe. For many years Barney was in pain. Doctors treated him with morphine, and over time the patient developed a habit of taking the medicine, which he, unfortunately, could not refuse after discharge. And when morphine replaced heroin, a new round of struggle for life began for Ross. The boxer’s wife Katya, a Hollywood dancer, did not want to live with a drug addict and filed for divorce. As a result, Ross became completely desperate and ended up in a rehab clinic.
Fortunately, he also emerged victorious from this battle, regaining both his sanity and his wife. Hollywood made The Monkey on My Back, which features the poignant story of a Jewish boxer. However, Ross, after watching the film, was terribly unhappy. He demanded that scenes in which the main character injected drugs into his vein should not be cut out of the tape. Swearing with the director, Barney said: “Without these explicit scenes, the film will lose its realism. It’s like taking a picture of a boxer who removes a glove a millimeter from an opponent’s head. After all, an injection is the moment when self-destruction occurs. People should know what awaits them, what is the price of drug use. ”
After the war, Barney was in demand not only in the cinema – his life, as always, was in full swing. So, he tried to illegally supply weapons to Israel, opened a fund to support his friend Jack Ruby – the man who shot Kennedy’s killer Lee Harvey Oswald, wrote an autobiographical book “Nobody Stays Alone” …
There were no rest breaks in Barney Ross’s fiery life, not even as short as the breaks between rounds. From an early age, he was a brave fighter who fought steadfastly against all opponents who stood in his way – both in the ring and outside. He failed only with one of them. On January 17, 1967, Sergeant Barney Ross, a passionate smoker, died of throat cancer – he was only 57 years old …
Sylvester Stallone, having learned the history of the champion, was inspired to create the blockbuster “The Expendables”, which was released in 2010. The film tells the story of a group of mercenaries who are tasked with overthrowing a South American dictator.Stallone participated in the development of the script, production of the film, and also starred in the lead role.

The hero’s name is Stallone Barney Ross. He fights desperately in inhuman conditions, not paying attention to the number of enemies. Just like the legendary corporal on a November night, sitting in a trench with his dying comrades.
With one important exception – in 1942 everything was for real.
