Long Island Top Guns Lacrosse

Top Guns on Top at U15 Lax Nationals

After coming up just short of the 1^st-place finish in the past two years, the Long Island Top Guns finally had a turn to celebrate a US Lacrosse U15 National Championship victory, as the 7^th-seeded squad defeated the No. 4 Yellow Jackets Blue, 14-12.

The action took place on Thursday, July 25^th, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, where the two Long Island clubs put on quite a show for the spectators.  Leading the way for the Top Guns was Samantha Geiersbach (6 goals, 1 assist), and Samantha Apuzzo (4 goals, 1 assist), who each had brilliant performances.

It took an entire team effort however for the Top Guns to go an undefeated 8-0 throughout the entire tournament.  En route to the championship, they had huge wins over the defending national champion No. 2 Sky Walkers (8-7) in the quarterfinals, and No. 6 Bear Lax 2016 (13-7) in the semis.

In the championship tilt, it was a close contest throughout, but winning possessions on the draw controls, pushing the tempo when numbers allowed, and spreading the Yellow Jackets out helped the Top Guns push past their opponent.

Geiersbach, Apuzzo and midfielder Kaitlyn Cerasi also helped by scoring all of the Top Guns’ goals in the second half, giving their team an 8-6 lead, and then a 14-10 advantage with just ten minutes left in regulation.

Although it seemed as if they were pulling away, the Jackets, who were winners of the national championship in 2010 and 2011, fought back and gave a valiant effort.  The team scored twice more before the final buzzer went off, but it just wouldn’t be enough, as the Top Guns celebrated their win.

The Yellow Jackets will still be credited with a successful tournament run of their own.  The squad went 6-1 throughout the event, and shutout the No. 5 Long Island Liberty, 14-0, in the quarterfinals, and then knocked off No. 1 STEPS 2016, 12-4, in the semis.  In the championship game, midfielder Taryn Ohlmiller led the team with four goals.

At the completion of the tournament, the top players at the event were honored and recognized by Lacrosse Magazine with a special selection to their Lacrosse Magazine All-Tournament Team.  The members of this exclusive list include:

Lizzie is a rapid-fire pistol. Best rifle to use the CZ 805 A2. It is the most balanced in terms of recoil, damage and mobility. For close combat, the G36 GL is by far the most viable, while the ARX-160 is a good replacement. I would not advise using the MDR GL, EF88 GL, SIZ556, SR-47 and TYPE 95 as they don’t add anything special to your set and you are better off using other rifles anyway.
