Why perfume began to smell differently: when it is necessary to change the scent or pay attention to the skin
YOU STORE THE BOTTLE IN THE BATHROOM
Where it is often damp and stuffy. Steam, high temperatures and bright lights can kill perfume faster than you think. The top notes under the influence of these factors become dull, musty, and the overall composition oxidizes. It is best to store the bottle in its original packaging and in a cool, dry place, such as a drawer in your bedside table.
YOUR PERFUME IS MANY YEARS OLD
If your favorite bottle is getting ready to celebrate its seventeenth birthday, it’s probably time to say goodbye to it.Perfumes can be stored for a maximum of five years, and even then, if the storage conditions (see above) are close to ideal. How do you know when it’s time to buy a new bottle? Look for obvious signs: the liquid has darkened, changed color, the aroma began to give off sourness, and in order for it to appear, you have to spray twice as much on yourself as usual.
YOU HAVE VERY DRY SKIN
If you have dry skin, then the perfume applied directly to it instantly loses the top notes and the fragrance disappears quickly. To prevent this from happening, apply it on the body as soon as you get out of the shower or immediately after applying an unscented moisturizing lotion to the body. The lotion will help maintain the integrity of the composition and will also prolong the duration of the scent.
YOU MIX THE FRAGRANCES
If you use citrus shower gel, armor-piercing deodorant, and then perfume yourself from head to toe with a scenting lotion and finally apply a cologne with amber, believe me, nothing good will come of it. It is better to use products with the same scent as your cologne, or products without any scent.
YOU WRONG WITH THE SEASON OF THE YEAR
Warm and enveloping winter scent can become overwhelmingly annoying if used in summer. And vice versa: a light and fresh summer aroma will be inappropriate in winter, when all the smells around you – lighted candles, firewood burning in the fireplace, thick skin of a jacket and boots – are heavy, warm, warming. This does not mean, of course, that it is necessary to change the cologne with the change of the season, but in general it is useful to have at least a couple of fragrances in your arsenal.
YOUR BODY CHEMISTRY HAS CHANGED
Your skin is a unique collection of acids, fats, proteins and carbohydrates. The perfume, in contact with the skin, reacts with this whole cocktail.Stress, diet, medication and even age-related changes may well be the reasons that the scent began to unfold on you in a different way. If you notice that the perfume is no longer suitable for you, try something new.
YOU HAVE A BAD TASTE
None of the above methods will help you if your perfume is bad on its own. If the thought that your favorite scent doesn’t seem to like anyone but you is coming to you more and more, this is a reason to think about changing the scent.Try, for example, one of these – you will surely find a great option.

Ode to cologne – We Read Together Magazine. Navigator in the world of books “
The pedigree of the “Cologne Water” is connected with the Italian Feminis family, which owned the old monastery recipe for the preparation of Aqua Admirabilis. The composition of this “amazing water” included bergamot, lavender and rosemary, infused with grape alcohol. How exactly they were infused and in what proportions was, of course, kept secret. The wonderful water was kept in basements for decades, and this was the main guarantee of success. Over the long years spent in cedar barrels, the particles of alcohol combined with molecules of essential oils, forming unique aromatic nuances.
In 1709, the head of the Feminis family, Gian Paolo, moved to Cologne and summoned his nephew Giovanni Maria Farina to help him.The young Farina turned out to be a very agile entrepreneur and successfully launched the production of a new fragrant product in Cologne. “My scent resembles a spring morning in Italy after rain, oranges, lemons, grapefruit, bergamot, zedrate, flowers and herbs of my homeland”, – this is how Giovanni Maria Farina described this new fixture in a letter to his brother.
During the Seven Years’ War of 1756–1763, French soldiers who visited Cologne brought the “amazing water” of Farina from there. This delightful novelty immediately caused a stir in Paris. At the same time, the French name for this fragrant miracle arose – “Eau de Cologne”, or in the Russian tongue twister – “cologne”.
The original novelty and rarity of the cologne determined its high cost. The most famous personalities began to take a great interest in cologne. “Cologne Water” is ordered by the high society of all of Europe. The Prussian king Frederick the Great presented a cologne as a gift to the Russian empress Catherine II. Of the all-Russian autocrats, Alexander I also dabbled in cologne. But the most decisive adherent of the “Cologne water” was the Emperor Napoleon.Even during military campaigns, he always carried a bottle of cologne with him.
But from a historical point of view, the scent of cologne won out over the scent of musk. Musk is an odorous secret, which is obtained mainly from the glands of a male ruminant – musk deer. In the early 19th century, musk, along with other animal scents, was in great vogue. In the 30s of the same century, the state of affairs in aromatic addictions changed. Animal aromas (musk, ambergris, civetin) are superseded by plant aromas (lavender, rosemary, orange blossom, acacia, violet and tuberose). It is now believed that harsh animal odors can cause neuroses, melancholy and female hysteria.
It is noteworthy that the former favorites – the aromas of animal origin are now being transferred to courtesans, but a palette of light floral scents is recommended for decent bourgeois ladies. A woman befits weakness, refinement, delicacy of feelings and poetry of nature. In the symbolism of this new everyday life, the young lady is associated with a flower, innocent, weak and beautiful. Men get forest smells: pine, cedar, oak moss, then the smell of leather is added to them. All these smells were supposed to speak about the devotion of their carrier to hunting, the main pleasure of “noble idleness.”
But let’s turn to the beginning of the 20th century. It was at this historical moment that the perception of spirits changed. In addition to the scent, the bottle, packaging and advertising have also come to be appreciated. The spirits themselves continued their evolution. François Coty was the first to combine natural and artificial scents in his compositions. His greatest creation is the Chypre perfume. The smell of the eponymous Soviet cologne has not yet disappeared in the memory of our contemporaries. But that was only a pale copy of the great original! The legendary “Chypre” itself was born at one of the most critical moments in the history of the 20th century – in 1917. Europe is finally tired of the senseless carnage of the First World War. People gradually turned to the lost meanings of everyday life. And at that moment a new enchanting fragrance came to their aid. So, the composition of “Chypre” includes a mixture of oak moss, patchouli and incense. The main material for this aromatic accord is lichen moss growing on oak trunks on the island of Cyprus. This is where the name of the perfume comes from, because Chypre in French is Cyprus.
Synthetic products revolutionized scent at the end of the 19th century, and then a new genus of perfumers came along that had already revolutionized the traditional understanding of the fragrance business. They were couturiers. The first such revolutionary was the legendary trendsetter of the first decades of the 20th century, Paul Poiret. In 1911, Poiret came up with the idea of adding fragrances to the clothing line. He named his perfume Les Parfums de Rosine after his eldest daughter. But if Poiret only wanted to slightly color his clothes with aromas, then he did not complete the commercial logic of this idea. This has already been done by Gabrielle Chanel, who released perfumes with her trademark in 1921. The great Mademoiselle did not like traditional floral scents, considering them a sign of the bourgeois style. In addition, she did not like the manner of scenting profusely, typical of the beginning of the century. The classic perfume with a recognizable floral scent was replaced by her with a complex and indefinite scent. The result of this experiment became known worldwide as “Chanel No. 5”.The bottle of this perfume has become one of the symbols of the artistic achievements of the twentieth century. A sample of it is now on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Labeling of perfumes and eau de toilette: how it works, order of passage
24.10.2019
Perfumes, colognes and eau de toilette were included in the list of goods that will be labeled without fail at the end of 2020. What you need to know about perfume labeling, what are the labeling rules and how to follow them, ATOL figured out.
The State Strategy for Counteracting Illegal Trafficking in Industrial Products classifies cosmetics and perfumery as the “red zone”, that is, an area where particularly careful control and counteraction to illegal traffic is required. One of the most powerful mechanisms of the state, which will significantly reduce the share of facilitation and counterfeit products in the perfumery market, is the introduction of mandatory labeling. According to the government’s plans, the experiment on labeling perfumes and eau de toilette will last from July 1 to November 30, and from July 1, 2020, perfumery will be labeled without fail.
As part of the experiment, the working group will find out the most convenient and cheapest ways to label goods and find weaknesses. Importers and manufacturers will be able to update their equipment park and learn how to sell branded products. The experiment involves the largest Russian perfumery factories and foreign concerns, including Novaya Zarya, Avon, Clarins, Aroma-Prom, L’Etoile and many others.
How the
marking system works
The operator of the marking system is the Center for the Development of Advanced Technologies (CRPT).Curator of labeling of perfumery products – Ministry of Industry and Trade.
To take part in the experiment, and then continue to work with the labeling when its application becomes mandatory, entrepreneurs (importers and manufacturers, wholesale and retail outlets) must register in the Honest ZNAK system. It will record all movements of the goods, as well as issue marking codes (CM), which must be applied to the packaging of the goods or the goods themselves. Registration in the system requires an enhanced qualified electronic signature. It can be obtained in one of the certification centers accredited by the Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation.
In addition to registering in the Chestny ZNAK system, manufacturers and importers must become a member of the GS1 Russia association. This association issues the GTINs (Global Heading Numbers) that are required to create a tagging code. The entrepreneur draws up an application in the Chestny ZNAK system, indicates the required number of marks and sends it to the CRPT. CRPT issues the required amount of CM, and the manufacturer (importer) applies them to their products. All information on the movement of goods is recorded through electronic document management. In the store at the checkout, the cashier punches the goods and scans the marking code. The cash register through the OFD transmits information to the CRPT system about the retired marking codes.
Thus, any bottle of perfume, cologne or eau de toilette produced in the Russian Federation or imported into it must be accounted for in the system. The state will increase tax collection, get rid of the abundance of counterfeit products, entrepreneurs will receive conditions for fair competition, and buyers will receive a guarantee of the legality of the goods.
Perfume and eau de toilette, subject to labeling
The category “Perfume and eau de toilette”, according to the All-Russian classifier of products by type of economic activity (OKPD 2), includes perfumes, eau de toilette and colognes. This includes all types of products: men’s, women’s, children’s and other fragrances.
Perfume codes subject to labeling:
- OKPD-2 20.42.11,
- TN VED EAEU 3303 00
Perfumers were very concerned about whether it was necessary to label testers and samples of perfumes, colognes and eau de toilette. An agreement was adopted on the labeling of goods in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which clarifies this point. If a sample (tester) was created or imported into Russia (and, therefore, cleared by customs) as a sample (tester), then there is no need to label such products. If the sample was imported or released from the factory as a commodity, and then “retrained” into a tester, then it must be marked at the stage of import (release).
Samples of perfumes, eau de toilettes, and colognes will most likely not be labeled. This is due to the huge volume of probes produced. In addition, the provision of a marking code is a paid service, and the marking of testers may well become “golden” for an entrepreneur.
If perfume, cologne or eau de toilette are part of a perfume set, then the bottle of perfume (cologne, eau de toilette) should be labeled. If you wish to register a sale with one “set” item, you can also mark the entire set – this functionality was provided in the system.
The procedure for labeling toilet water and perfume
As already mentioned, each bottle of perfume, cologne or eau de toilette must be labeled. The labeling pilot is testing various labeling methods, including simple labeling with Data Matrix codes.
Perfumery products have a huge number of different types of packaging: it can be ribbed cardboard, foil, fabric, mesh. It is either impossible or difficult to apply a marking code on such surfaces, since there is a high risk of dot gain (because of the packaging, it begins to occupy a large area and is poorly readable).Labels with a marking code can be applied to cellophane, metallized, aluminum or cardboard packaging of goods. Identification media must not be printed on clear wrap or any other external wrapping material and overlap with other information
At the end of the experiment, the perfume will be labeled with the Data Matrix codes placed on the labels.
Products will need to be labeled either at production in Russia, or when importing goods into the territory of the Russian Federation before passing customs procedures.Retail stores will also face the need for product labeling. So, it will be necessary to mark the leftovers (goods received for sale before July 1, 20) and goods that customers returned to the store.
To successfully work with labeled products, entrepreneurs need to update their equipment fleet. You will need two-dimensional barcode scanners that can read the DataMatrix code and special software that will allow you to keep track of products with marking.

Secrets of perfume persistence: how to choose, where and how to apply
Choosing a fragrance
It is important to understand that perfume is different. It differs not only in brands, but also in the degree of concentration of perfume oils. Perfumes, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, cologne and other perfumery products are emitted depending on the intensity and persistence of the aroma.
Perfume is the most concentrated, persistent and expensive type of perfumery. The content of fragrant substances is from 20 to 30%. The base, trail notes are strongly expressed in perfumes. Recommended for winter and evening use.
Eau de Parfum – lighter perfumery with pronounced middle notes, but almost as strong as perfume. Eau de parfum is sometimes even called a daytime perfume, it is ideal for use during the day.The content of fragrances is 12–20%.
Eau de Toilette is a light type of perfume, in which the top notes are well felt. Fragrant substances from 8 to 10%. Eau de toilette is less persistent: you need to use it several times a day to feel the scent.
Eau de Cologne is the weakest fragrance. The content of fragrant substances in it is from 3 to 8%. Such perfumes are used mainly by men.
The concentration of fragrances in other perfumery products (deodorants, lotions, etc.) is less than 3%.Their aroma is barely perceptible.
The bouquet of the perfume also affects the longevity of the scent. Muscat, chypre and woody aromas are more persistent than floral, citrus or marine.
When choosing a perfume, consider the type and composition of the ingredients.
Application rules
The persistence of the fragrance also depends on the way the perfume is used, or rather on where and how to apply it.
Where to apply perfume
When the inimitable Coco Chanel was asked where to apply perfume, she replied: “Where you want to be kissed.”
In fact, the perfume needs to be applied on the wrist, behind the earlobe, on the bend of the elbow, on the neck in the area of the interclavicular cavity and under the knee.
These are the so-called heart rate points. In these places, the blood vessels are close to the skin, the temperature of these areas is slightly higher. All this contributes to the disclosure and spread of the aroma.
Please note: we are talking about spirits. They are usually produced in bottles with a glass rod on the cork. By the way, she needs to pick up perfume, and not with the pad of her finger. To smell, you need just a drop of perfume for each point.
Eau de parfum and eau de toilette are usually sold as aerosols. If you use them, spray the perfume in front of you and just stand under the cloud of scent. The water is less concentrated, so the procedure can be repeated several times.
How to apply perfume
Most people apply perfume at the very end, when they are already dressed, or even before leaving the house. Alas, the scent won’t last long this way.Clothing absorbs well, but smells poorly. And not only perfume, but all the aromas around. In addition, if you apply perfume on clothes, especially light-colored ones, there is a risk that stains and streaks will remain.
Use perfume immediately after shower or bath. Clean steamed leather absorbs the scent like a sponge. At the same time, skin hydration is of great importance. If you have oily skin, there is nothing to worry about, but if it is dry or normal, then in order for the perfume to last for a long time, the skin must be moisturized.
For these purposes, it is best to use a body lotion from the same line as the perfume. Many manufacturers, in addition to perfumes, produce a whole series of care products with the same fragrance. This way, your perfume won’t clash with the scent of your lotion or antiperspirant. If your perfume does not have “companions”, use neutral, odorless products.
Didn’t have time to shower before leaving? Spread Vaseline on your pulse points and then apply perfume to them. Such a base will fix the scent: it will last longer.
Sprinkle perfume on your wrists and rub them together – you do that, admit it? This is mistake. Any aroma is multi-layered: first, the top notes are revealed (literally in the first 5-15 minutes), then the middle ones begin to “sound” and at the end the base ones break through. If the perfume is rubbed, then this process is disrupted, the aroma loses its individuality. So just let the perfume dry.
A few more tricks
In conclusion, there are a few more life hacks that will allow you to feel and give your favorite scent for as long as possible.
- Apply a drop of perfume to the comb or sprinkle it with perfume water. Comb. Hair perfectly retains odors: with every turn of the head, a pleasant sillage will remain behind you.
- Moisten a cotton pad with your favorite perfume and put it in your purse or pocket. This will enhance the scent and create a fragrant aura not only around you, but also around your belongings.
- Store perfume properly. Watch the expiration date and do not leave it in the bathroom. It’s too hot and humid in there. It is better to keep the perfume in the box in which it was sold: this way it will be protected from sunlight.
Perfume, like the flickering of a candle, can envelop you and add magic to your image. But the scents are insidious. If you use the same perfume for a long time, your nose can get so used to it that it starts to seem as if the fragrance is less and less persistent with each new bottle. Also, remember that if the perfume suits you, you will not feel it. If you “hear” a perfume, it means that it is not for you or you have poured too much of it on yourself. In this case, it will be uncomfortable not only for you, but also for those around you.

90,000 Perfume, eau de toilette, cologne – how they differ and what to choose
The world of perfumery is multifaceted, it has its own rules. There is no such fragrance that would suit everyone and always. You should have at least a couple of different scents in your collection: deep for an evening date and neutral for the office, stable winter and light summer. The stability and saturation of perfumery depends on the concentration of essential oils. Depending on the specific volume of the aromatic component, the perfume is divided into perfume, water and cologne.
Perfume
The strongest and lasting fragrance is not given by cologne, as many people think, but perfume. There are about 25% of aromatic substances in the mix of oils, ethyl alcohol and water. Therefore, perfumes are a winter option, in hot weather they will be unnecessary and harsh. It is worth choosing a perfume with care and applying it correctly to fully reveal the scent. A drop of perfume is enough on the wrist, on the area behind the lobes, in the interclavicular cavity and on the inner bend of the elbow. It is better to apply the fragrance with an applicator, do not rub it with your hands and between your wrists, otherwise the molecules will collapse and the impression of the perfume will be distorted.Especially strong are the notes of the perfume trail – the most delicate and sensual, they stay on the skin for up to seven hours.
Eau de parfum and toilet water
Essential oils in eau de parfum – no more than 20%. The smell is also stable, but lighter and more transparent. This option is suitable for a summer day, but richer, deeper bouquets are well received in winter. Eau de parfum can be applied in the morning, and its imprint will accompany you all day.
The most popular perfumery option is eau de toilette. The concentration of the aromatic composition in it is low – 8-10%. Because of this, the price of eau de toilette, even of luxury brands, is affordable. The top and middle notes sound bright, and the trail quickly dissipates. Eau de toilette without a too exotic bouquet is suitable for the office, you will have to take it with you in order to periodically refresh the aroma, which lasts for 3-6 hours. In the evening, you can change the bouquet to a more sensual, deep one.
Apply water with a dispenser correctly by spraying a cloud over yourself. The fabric absorbs and retains odor well, but does not give it away well. The molecules will open more fully if you use the perfume after a shower, when the skin pores are open.
Cologne
Cologne is a classic after shave skin care product. This is the lightest type of perfume that only lasts a couple of hours. It can be used for disinfection and freshness in the morning, before a date, after the gym. Apply the product with a cotton pad. For sensitive skin, it is better to use colognes-creams.
Leaving with perfume
Many perfume houses produce a line of fragrances, which, in addition to the main perfume, also includes perspirant deodorants and care products. They do not come into conflict with each other and reveal the scent more fully. If you use a single perfume, you should choose a treatment with a neutral scent so as not to create dissonance.
How to choose your fragrance
Anyone who has ever been to a perfume shop knows how difficult it is to compare different perfumes. After a few bottles, our sense of smell ceases to perceive smells, and they become similar to one another. You risk buying something completely different from what you expect. So in search of something new for yourself, it is better to get acquainted with 3-4 fragrances at a time, no more.
