†The Triangle Rewards Program is owned and operated by Canadian Tire Corporation, Limited. Triangle™ Mastercard®, Triangle™ World Mastercard® and Triangle™ World Elite Mastercard® are issued by Canadian Tire Bank. Rewards are in the form of electronic Canadian Tire Money® (CT Money®). To collect bonus CT Money you must pay with a Triangle credit card. You cannot collect paper Canadian Tire Money on bonus offers. Any bonus multiplier is based on the base rate of collecting CT Money (0.4%), and will be added to whatever the Member would otherwise collect, without the bonus. Example: On a $100 (pre-tax) purchase with a 20X bonus multiplier a Member would earn a bonus $8 in CT Money (20 X .4% X $100). The 30X for Triangle Mastercard, World Mastercard and World Elite Mastercard customers consists of the 10X everyday plus the 20X bonus. Not all items sold are eligible to earn CT Money or to be redeemed for. Conditions apply. Visit triangle.

“Forget everything you think and know about Toronto” – with these words one of the most famous radio hosts in Toronto, Mokka Frap, left me after our interview. In many ways, he is right. What are your first associations with Canada? Hockey, maple syrup, maybe a high standard of living? But not basketball (at least before the Raptors’ historic success in these playoffs). Many of you are unaware, and those who even knew, have long forgotten that basketball was invented by Canadian James Naismith back in 1891.
Since then, basketball has become a distinctly American sport. Even Naismith himself invented the game while working at the Young Men Christian Association’s International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. But every year basketball is becoming more and more international in every sense.
This is largely due to the NBA itself: in recent years, the league has placed a special emphasis on international development. And the result is obvious – in 2016, the growth rate of the NBA was 13 percent. In the past, an astronomical 25 percent. International growth has contributed much to this. If the pace catches up, by the end of the next decade, the NBA will catch up with the NFL in league revenues in what was once the unthinkable .
Using realistic growth rates (6.5% and 15% for the NFL and NBA, respectively), we see that the NBA will overtake the NFL in revenue by the end of the next decade.
‘According to NFL numbers.
Canada plays a leading role in the development of international players, more specifically the Toronto region . Over the past decade, Canada has provided the basketball world with players like Jamal Murray, Tristan Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Nick Stauskas. In the 2013 NBA Draft, the Cavaliers drafted a Canadian with the first pick for the first time – though it was Anthony Bennett. A year later, the Cavaliers again took the Canadian first – Andrew Wiggins, whom they sent to Minnesota three months later.
Canada has occasionally had players like Jamal Magloir or Rick Fox, and, of course, Steve Nash must be remembered. But so that 13 Canadians play in the NBA at once ?! So where do the roots grow from?
The Changing Face of Canadian Sports
The history of modern Canadian basketball begins in 1967 under Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson. It was this liberal prime minister who introduced the world’s first immigration system in which race was not taken into account.Up to this point, the vast majority of immigrants to Canada have come from European countries or countries with a predominantly European population, such as the United States or Australia. The father of the current Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau continued Pearson’s immigration policy, and by 1986 the percentage of visible ethnic minorities in Canada had grown to 6.3 percent. In 1991 this figure was 9.4 percent, in 2001 it was 13.4 percent, and today it is about 25 percent.
The metamorphosis of basketball in Canada can be largely attributed to the aforementioned demographic changes. The vast majority of immigrants come from countries where hockey is an unknown sport . Arriving in Canada, parents send their children to play sports familiar to them – first of all, it is football and basketball. Also, the “new Canadians” are frightened off by the price tag of the national treasure. The fact is that in Canada, as in Russia, hockey has become a sport for the rich, even for the indigenous population, and even more so for immigrants who count every dollar. In the meantime, playing football and basketball requires only sneakers and a ball. There is also a belief among many immigrants and their children that hockey is not the most welcoming sport for immigrants or minorities.
Based on a combination of factors, it can be concluded that basketball is the sport of the future in Canada. After all, basketball fans are younger and belong to the diverse ethnic groups . Hockey fans, meanwhile, tend to be older and older-regime Canadians. And based on demographic studies that indicate a gradual decline in the indigenous white population due to low birth rates and a high rate of immigration replacing the indigenous population, we can safely say that the position of basketball in the country will only strengthen.
And the numbers also support this conclusion.
The same poll showed that Canadians still generally prefer the Stanley Cup, but the difference is not critical: 38% versus 33%.
“Vincenity” and big names
If demographic changes set the stage for new sports, then there are a number of reasons why basketball is so engrained in the hearts of young new Canadians. One of the reasons is a guy named Vince Carter. Many Canadians of my generation have the most vivid childhood memories of Vincenity, which for a time bewitched Toronto. While Kawhi told the League that the Raptors were here for a long time, Carter was the first to announce the existence of Toronto with his performance in the overhead throwing competition. It was thanks to Vince that many Canadian children first picked up a basketball and tried to repeat what their hero performed.
But the star factor also cannot be discarded.Any marketer will tell you that the most sought-after athletes are footballers and basketball players. This is largely due to the popularity and availability of these sports, but the same phenomenon is being seen in America itself. And many attribute this to the fact that American football athletes and hockey players wear “armor” that covers the body and, most importantly, the face. There is a reason why, as schoolchildren, we would bench a piece of paper and, when thrown into the trash, would stop and shout “Kobe!” and at the sharpest angle they threw a paper “ball” into the basket.
Toronto – Basketball Players Factory
But today Canada is not just a large community of fans with a scattering of amateur basketball players. Canada is an equally important player base for the NBA, on par with American cities that have produced legend after legend at one time.
Take New York, for example, home to basketball players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Julius Irving, Chris Mullin, and Carmelo Anthony. Even Michael Jordan was born in Brooklyn. But today everything has changed.Perhaps the most famous basketball player from New York is Kemba Walker.
It is believed that Canada, and more specifically – Toronto, in terms of fertility in the “production” of basketball players is second only to Los Angeles, Chicago and the metropolitan area around Washington.
This leap forward in Canadian basketball began with the Nike CIA Bounce, which was founded in 2004 by Tony McIntyre. It was the first team from Canada to compete in the Nike EYBL and is accredited by the Amateur Athletic Union.Amateur Athletic Union – AAU) *. Nike EYBL stands for Elite Youth Basketball League, a tournament in which 42 of the best qualifying basketball teams from the United States and now Canada take part. Almost every top Canadian player has played in the CIA Bounce at one time or another, including Tristan Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett.
* – AAU is an amateur sports organization that was founded in 1888 with the aim of creating common standards in amateur sports.Initially, the AAU partnered with the US Olympic Committee to prepare American athletes for the Olympic Games. The AAU’s main task now is to develop young athletes.
But the turning point came in 2010 when former basketball player Jesse Tipping rebuilt the arena into a basketball academy called the Athlete Institute (AI). It was there that Jamal Murray and Ton Maker, the first student from Canada to be drafted in the first round, spent their school careers.Jesse, seeing the number of talented Canadians who are going to play in American preparatory academies, decided that Canada, in particular Toronto, was not a plowed field, and opened his own academy.
AI is based in the village of Mono on the outskirts of Orangeville, a small town an hour’s drive from downtown Toronto. The family decided to settle there after frequent relocations due to the work of Jesse’s father due to the relative proximity to everything in Southern Ontario. Three teams play for AI, the main of which is called Orangeville Prap and represents AI in tournaments in the USA.The other two teams compete locally and are de facto farm clubs for Orangeville Prap. And as it turned out, little Mono turned out to be an ideal place for the development of young basketball players.
To learn more about the epicenter of Canadian basketball, I got in my car and drove down the country roads to Mono.
“Institute of the Athlete” in Mono.
There I had a chance to talk with Tony McIntyre, now the director of basketball activities, and Alex Dominato, the director of admissions and recruiting.
Part of my conversation with them:
About choosing a small town:
– Why Orangeville?
– [Jesse’s] family wanted to return to Ontario. His father once told us a funny story. While still in England, he went to a cartographic store, bought a map, put a pin and rope in it, and outlined a radius that would cover everything he held dear in Ontario. Come to think of it, Orangeville is an hour’s drive from the airport and an hour from downtown Toronto.
– Is there an advantage to play here?
– Absolutely.I think location is one of our greatest strengths. When a player comes to us, he has two priorities: studies and sports. It is a quiet, small town – there is little to distract from.
Also, thanks to the location, we have the opportunity to be in sight only when we want it [in games with American teams], but we can also retire to our quiet corner. And I think it attracts some people. When a student plays in the best academies in the United States, he is always in sight and this can ultimately negatively affect the player.
There are so many life skills that shape a successful basketball player. Many people forget that when they graduate [from school], they still have to be a student athlete.
After all, these guys represent our program for a lifetime. Wherever the player goes in the future, people will evaluate our work on these players. Reputation means a lot to us. When these players are shown on TV and mentioned that they are our alumni, the last thing we want is for people to think, “who raised this asshole.”
AI has gained a good reputation overseas. One of the most famous alumni – Ton Maker, was born in South Sudan, grew up in Australia and went to school in the United States. But the pressure that Tony McIntyre was talking about turned out to be too strong, and Macker moved to Orangeville Prap. Boys from Germany and Great Britain also played for the team. Starting next season, the first Chinese citizen in the history of the academy will play in the team.
Even American players are starting to take a closer look at this program, especially from Buffalo, where Coach McIntyre has had a special relationship with some of the players and their families since the CIA Bounce. But the recruiting network doesn’t end with Ontario and the Buffalo borderlands. In Orangeville Prap, players from Quebec and British Columbia have made a very strong impression. And the basis of this success is ethics, which everyone adheres to. They say that what they need most is not a jumping boy, but good people. And the results of this approach are visible to the naked eye. For example, many alumni spend the entire summer at Mono preparing for the next season. While I was taking pictures, three graduates were training in the gym with their son Tony, who is also an AI trainer.
So how do they explain the success of Canadian basketball? First, they list all the same factors that I mentioned earlier, especially immigration and Vince Carter. Plus, they see one factor that gets little coverage when it comes to discussing Canadian basketball: style.
Canadian basketball combines American and European styles. On the one hand, Canadians pay due attention to the technique typical of Europeans, but on the other hand, they do not forget about the role of athleticism. Both Alex and Tony believe that Americans have long dominated through crazy athleticism. Now players are required to have more understanding of the game and some technical aspects.
But both note the proximity to the United States. Unlike Europeans, Canadians have the ability to follow the same path as Americans. Even as a child, they have the opportunity to try their hand against the best peers in America.
The Future of Basketball in Canada
Tony McIntyre (l) is Director of Basketball Activities and Alex Dominato (p) is Director of Admissions and Recruiting.
And they agree that basketball in Canada has a bright future. The Raptors’ championship will continue to raise the profile of basketball in a country obsessed with hockey. The only issue they see is whether Canada’s relatively fragile basketball infrastructure can meet the demand for basketball. Tony McIntyre also adds that Kawai’s already legendary throw against Philadelphia will have an even longer impact on Canadian basketball than the NBA Finals. That this throw will inspire children to grab a ball or even a crumpled piece of paper in their hands, as Vince Carter and Kobe Bryant once inspired this previous generation.
And I can’t argue with them. As a Canadian and living in Toronto, I can see with my own eyes how this sport has settled in Canada, especially in Toronto. Almost at every entrance to the house there is now a basketball hoop where the hockey net used to be.
Parks are packed.
Night basketball leagues are gaining popularity, almost on a par with night hockey. In the upcoming draft, 7 Canadians can be drafted at once, including RJ Barrett, who is predicted to be number 3 in the Knicks.
Articles and documentaries are being written about this phenomenon, and this is just the beginning. Basketball will soon become a national treasure. Believe it or not, I’ll leave you with the following statistic: Only 10 percent of Canadians said they followed the NBA before the Raptors’ amazing playoffs – now that number is 40 percent.

American Museum of Natural History
(American Museum of Natural History)
There are not many museums in the world where children can touch a real dinosaur bone, fly in space and see a whale. It may take a whole day to inspect the entire museum, or maybe more than one, but we recommend visiting the halls that children will especially like:
1.In The Discovery Room , kids can literally touch science: hunt animals in the huge African baobab tree, create their own collection of sparkling gems, hold real fossils and even the skulls of extinct animals. Perhaps they themselves will be able to assemble the skeleton of a predatory reptile from the Triassic period! Children will get acquainted with a seismograph – a special device for measuring all earthquakes on the planet. It is possible to discover a fantastic colored microcosm on the second floor of the hall, where modern microscopes are located. In the “Room of Discovery” all sections of science are collected, so everyone will find an interesting lesson and learn a lot of new things.
2. Fossil Hall contains the largest dinosaur bones in the world! This hall gives fans of the Earth Before Time and Ice Age cartoons a unique chance to meet many of their favorite characters! Children are eager to see the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus. A powerful skull, sharp teeth and a huge strong tail gave the giant the glory of the most indomitable predatory animal.Near the tyrannosaurus, a predatory Allosaurus attacks a diplodocus, just like in the movie Jurassic Park. The guests of the museum will find out the names of the rest of the dinosaurs themselves. In the hall of the Ice Age there are skeletons of mastodons, mammoths and a large-horned deer, standing next to which you can appreciate how gigantic the creatures that once inhabited our planet were.
3. In Theater IMAX shows colorful films on a huge screen. The plots of the films are different: from the migration of butterflies from Canada to Mexico to the friendship of an orangutan with a man in the Kenyan savanna. The repertoire of the cinema changes every month. The first session starts at 10:30, the last one at 16:30. Seats are limited and tickets must be purchased in advance in addition to the main ticket.
4. Center for Earth and Space (Rose Center for Earth and Space ) is famous for its Hayden planetarium, built in the form of a large glass cube. The Hayden Big Bang Theater, located on the ground floor, invites everyone to watch 3D movies. A dynamic flight into space, an explosion, a fireball, the emergence of the Milky Way galaxy – in just 4 minutes you can learn the secret of the origin of the Universe. In the Space Theater, planets, stars, nebulae and galaxies are shown on a large screen. Children and adults are invited to feel like a real astronaut and go to explore outer space.
5. The pride of the museum is the magnificent dioramas (Dioramas) – grandiose decorations with different themes. It is so easy to feel like a time traveler around nature reviving around! In the hall “Dinosaurs: Old Excavations, New Discoveries” (Dinosaurs: Ancient Fossils, New Discoveries) you can travel back 130 million years and wander around the eastern province of China Liaoning (Liaoning Diorama) , where no man’s foot has yet set foot and powerful volcanoes erupted.Frogs, turtles, fish and pines look almost the same as they do now, but that’s where the similarities end. Long extinct dinosaurs against the backdrop of unusual exotic plants, giant insects and wonderful animals – a walk through the Chinese forest will be one of the most memorable in life and will help you understand how our history has developed over the centuries. Another era reigns in The Akeley Hall of African Mammals , home to African elephants, lions, rhinos, gorillas and giraffes. The landscapes are recreated so believably that you just want to climb behind the glass showcase of the diorama and find yourself in this unknown world.
6. In the hall “ Ocean Life” (The Hall of Ocean Life) in a dark room is a real treasure of the ocean – a huge blue whale! As the largest living animal on the planet, the blue whale lives for an average of 80-90 years. The length of the museum whale is more than 33 meters, and for the sake of completeness, it makes sounds so that others can feel the full power of its voice. In the Caribbean Sea near the island of Andros, flocks of colorful coral reef dwellers are circling. From the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, little explorers are transported north and observe the life of walruses. In the hall with the shark life diorama, you will see the largest and most peaceful shark in the world. The whale shark family feeds exclusively on plankton and does not attack humans!

Eleventh Christmas meeting of the Friends ‘Club
On January 31, 2016, the traditional Christmas meeting of the members of the Friends’ Club of the Tsarskoye Selo Museum-Reserve took place.
The meeting was dedicated to the recently opened Arsenal pavilion, where the new exposition “Tsarskoye Selo Arsenal. The Imperial Weapons Collection ”, created in collaboration with the State Hermitage Museum. The guests visited the main pavilion of the Aleksandrovsky Park, examined the exposition, the special pride of which is the collection of the eastern weapons of the Russian emperors from the funds of the museum-reserve. Among the items on display (more than 400 in total) are the famous painting by Horace Verne “The Carousel of Tsarskoye Selo”, collections of oriental edged weapons and firearms of the 18th – 19th centuries, items of horse harness. The Hermitage has provided rare exhibits from its collection for temporary storage, including armor of the 16th century from the collection of Nicholas I, which were once in the Arsenal.
The official part of the event took place at the Catherine Palace. Director of the Museum-Reserve Olga Taratynova noted the role of the Friends Club in the development of the museum and thanked for the contribution to the implementation of museum projects. Deputy Director for Research Iraida Bott presented items that have added to the collection of the Museum-Reserve thanks to the support and participation of the Club. Among the most interesting items is a pair of tea from the most significant ceremonial service of the late 19th – early 20th centuries – Rafaelevsky, in addition to which this year the museum acquired two more items at the Bonhams auction in London – a plate and a caviar bowl. Thanks to the charitable assistance of Gazprom Export, the collection of the museum-reserve was replenished with a rare item – a porcelain punch bowl of the second half of the 19th century, made at the Imperial Porcelain Factory. Mikhail Karisalov handed over to the museum a painting with Tsarskoye Selo inventory numbers “The Prayer of Alexander I at the Tomb of Alexander Nevsky on the Eve of Departure to Taganrog” by Grigory Chernetsov, stolen during the years of occupation. The collection of women’s costume was supplemented by dresses, blouses, a skirt and a boater – a set of exquisite clothes from the beginning of the 20th century was received by the museum from the Svetoch Association of Slavic Culture (Canada).Through the efforts of the members of the Club, the collection of the museum “Russia in the Great War” in the War Chamber continues to form.
The Freedom Cosmetic Association has prepared an exquisite gift for the Club members – an exclusive set of hand creams called Empress Flowers. Favorite flowers of Alexandra Feodorovna – lilac and lily of the valley – became the leitmotif of the new set. The creams contain the highest quality ingredients: peach, almond and olive oils, vitamins A and E, panthenol, flower extracts from peony and violet, as well as extracts of grape seed, apple, aloe and echinacea, clover and flax.Creams organically complement each other in function: the one with the aroma of white Persian lilac – with a moisturizing effect, and with the aroma of lily of the valley – nutritious. The design of the set is made in the traditions of packaging cosmetic products in the late 19th – early 20th centuries – two metal tubes are placed in a case in the Art Nouveau style.
Gifts and prizes for the winners of the traditional quiz were provided by the Ladoga company, the Cosmetic Association Svoboda, the Babaevsky confectionery concern, and the Epigraph printing house.
Ice Knight Armor | Children
Hockey skates and a hockey stick are still in demand among boys.
Dmitry Bernatavicius, a well-known player of “Avangard” in the past, told TimeOut.Ru how to correctly choose them and other equipment.
Defense against attack
Modern protective ammunition (carapace, elbow pads, knee pads, shields, shell, shorts), thanks to the pressed foam rubber with the addition of a thin metal mesh, is able to protect both from the puck and from the opponent’s hard attack. In the collections of one of the main “protective” brands Mission you will find all this, as well as an obligatory element of children’s hockey – a “collar” made of soft foam rubber.
Helmet the head of everything!
There is nothing to do on the site without him. A modern helmet made of thick and durable plastic will save the head of a young hockey player during power struggle, the mask will protect the face from hitting the puck. And let the open ears and forehead remain in the heroic past of the ice game.
So that the child does not suffer with leotards and T-shirts, buy him functional underwear – the overalls will not only warm him on the court, but will help bring sweat to the surface of the form. But, fortunately, you won’t have to choose for a long time – a sweater and leggings will be given out at a sports school.
Extremes of gaiters
When choosing gloves (gaiters), there is one simple rule: the thicker the protective inserts, the more difficult it is to move the hand and hold the club. Small gloves are the other extreme: the open space up to the elbow pads creates an unnecessary risk of injury. It is better to take leggings from highly specialized manufacturers, for example, Eagle. Yes, although they are more expensive, they are much more convenient and better made.
Skates must be one size larger than the shoes the child is wearing. They measure them on socks of the thickness in which they plan to play. If the boots are tight or slack, take the next pair. Beginners want stiffer skates to support the ankle better. Pay attention to the “little things” like an anatomical felt tongue with a molded insert, antimicrobial non-slip insole. The glass – the part of the skate between the blade and the boot – must be made of durable plastic. The optimal shoes, according to experts, are a moisture-wicking inner lining, a built-in ankle support, segmental plastic cushions, a soft tongue, a plastic toe, an anatomical heel that gives stability to the leg. The best steel for blades is Swedish or Canadian. But even it becomes dull if you forget about the covers outside the ice.
That’s right – your kid’s first club hook must be straight! Which grip is more convenient for him – left or right – the child will determine for himself. And at the same time he will ask for a new “tool of labor”. The optimal children’s club has a wooden handle and a plastic hook. When choosing it, focus on the rigidity (Flex), the shape of the hook (for the attackers – relatively short and with a bend more than average, for the defenders – vice versa) and the length. In children’s clubs, it ranges from 42 to 45 inches (105 to 112 cm). In order not to be mistaken, place the hook between the feet of the child – the handle of the club should reach him to the nose (in skates to the chin).
1. As a rule, one set of uniforms is enough for children for a season. Hockey is a contact game, after some time some of the equipment will have to be changed. So do not make a purchase “for growth”: the child will be uncomfortable, and this may discourage the desire to play hockey.
2. For a beginner hockey player, it is enough to buy skates with a stick, a helmet and shin guards. The rest of the equipment even interferes with the child, hindering his movements. Protection should be acquired about a year after the baby has picked up the golf club.
3. The balance between the price of a mold and its technological characteristics is called convenience. Hockey equipment must be measured very carefully: put on and walk around the store, bend over, wave your arms. It takes at least an hour, but comfort in hockey is one of the factors of success.
4. Ask and listen carefully to consultants . There can be more than a hundred gloves in a store alone, here you cannot do without the help of a professional. The consultants, by the way, are interested in “tinkering” with you: changing an unsuitable outfit means wasting time twice.

Royal Ontario Museum in Canada: photos, description, exhibits
The Royal Ontario Museum: history, main exhibitions, what to see with children, especially visiting.
Time stands still at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada. The variety of expositions is so addictive that it can fly by all day. The largest cultural institution in the country is famous for its internal content and “space” exterior.
The arithmetic of the Natural Science Museum is impressive:
- 4 floors and 40 galleries, filled with artifacts and amazing gizmos from around the world, prehistoric and modern; 90,660 6 million items;
- annually the building is visited by over 1 million people.
The Royal Ontario Museum in Canada has already celebrated 150 years. It received its first visitors in 1857. In the first century of its life, it belonged to a local university and was not very popular.
But the collection of exhibits has grown so much that the authorities decided to separate it from the educational institution. Despite the “sovereignty”, the museum has remained a platform for scientific and cultural research.
The building of the museum itself is also curious. It is located in an old house on one of the main streets of Toronto. And only in 2007, he had an unusual wing in the form of mineral crystals. The architects were right: the technological look caused a surge in popularity and brought worldwide fame to the Royal Museum.
Main exhibitions of the Royal Museum
Four floors immerse you in the world of history, natural science and art from different parts of the world. Visitors are greeted by knights in armor, the king of hell, sarcophagi with mummies, the remains of ancient animals. You can admire weightless porcelain vases and outfits from famous modern couturiers.
Africa: Egypt and Sudan.
This section of the Royal Museum in Canada contains evidence of the reign of the pharaohs. Guests study hieroglyphs, look at gold coins, clay vases and statues of gods.
Greece and Rome.
Two great civilizations reveal all their secrets. For this in the arsenal of coins, busts of rulers and celebrities, household items.
East and South Asia.
Travel to ancient Japan, Korea and China. Some of the artifacts are over 2000 years old. The pride of the exhibits is a huge collection of Chinese porcelain.
Canada and America.
Galleries clearly demonstrate how the indigenous people lived and wore.
One of the galleries allows you to feel like a resident of the Middle Ages or the Renaissance. Interiors of different eras, from Victorian to the present day, have been recreated.
Many people go to the Royal Ontario Museum just to see the creations of Dior and Chanel. The collections of clothes are chic. Among the exhibits there are national dresses of local residents and peoples of the world. The gallery shows how fashion has evolved over the centuries.
Zoology, botany and mineralogy.
Canada’s largest collection of birds, mammals, minerals and rocks. In the galleries of this theme, you can see real meteorites, stuffed animals, fossils of animals and plants.
In the museum you can not only see the exhibits, there are things for sale. For example, collectors are offered to buy paintings.Fashion and Clothing in the Museum: Chinese Temple Statues
What to see with children
The Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto is able to captivate young visitors for a long time. Children look at unusual animals and birds with pleasure, dare to look into a cave teeming with bats.
Children are especially fond of the gallery of the dinosaur era – from the Jurassic to the Cretaceous periods. The world’s most complete collection of skulls of these huge animals has been collected. They are also presented in full growth. You can see in detail Tyrranosaurus, Triceratops, Stegosaurus and many other extinct creatures.
Huge sea turtles and ichthyosaurs – ancient reptiles resembling dolphins – live next to these giants.
There is a special children’s area – a gallery of discoveries, where activities and educational events take place. Fun and interesting. Children go in search of dinosaur bones, study meteorites and even try on costumes from different eras.
You should definitely look into the gloomy cave, in which there are more than two dozen bats.It tells all about the life of night creatures using the example of realistic modeling of the natural habitat.Gallery “Age of Dinosaurs”

The adaptation of the legendary manga by Yukito Kishiro is, of course, an ambitious project, but at the same time quite unexpected for Robert Rodriguez.Even taking into account his “Spy Children” – still far from teenage melodramatized action films, he made a career for himself. So it is very strange to see him in the director’s chair for the project “Alita: Battle Angel”, but he coped with dignity.
“Alita: Battle Angel”
Canada, Argentina, USA, 2019
Director: Robert Rodriguez
Genre: fantasy, action, thriller, romance, adventure
Cast: Rosa Salazar, Mahershala Ali, Eisa Gonzalez, Lana Condor, Jennifer Connelly, Jackie Earl Haley, Michelle Rodriguez, Christophe Waltz, Ed Skrein, Casper Van Deen
It’s a thankless task to compare “Battle Angel” with the ambiguously perceived “Ghost in the Shell” by the public – they have different atmosphere and pace of history, but such comparisons will still be.For at the heart of both there and there is a cult anime / manga, in the lens – the tragedy of a dystopian future, in the center of the story – a vivid female image, a kind of Galatea of transhumanism. We will remind, “Ghost” with Scarlett Johansson “zaheyli” for allegedly inconsistency with the canon, sagging under the modern film industry and the devil knows what else. “Alita” is the other extreme, the famous Cameron gloss and scope (read – deflection to the industry) is much larger here, but at the same time deliberately “big-eyed” Alita, cyborgization of everything and everything in the frame – to the grotesque.Yes, all this is spectacular, beautiful, but still something is missing …
So, the plot of the film unfolds in 2563, 300 years after the destructive war, which, according to the law of the genre, wiped out all living things from the face of the Earth, leaving only the city soaring in the sky and the settlement under it, which lives off the “waste” from above. This is exactly how Doctor Ido finds a head from a cyborg girl and, driven by longing for his daughter, restores her, gives her a name. For a while, Alita leads the life of an ordinary teenager, but the “underworld” with its mercenaries, crazy criminals and survival races is cruel, and Alita rapidly grows up, partially recalls her former life and through a series of losses becomes the very “battle angel” without fear and reproach.
And this is what immediately confuses the “battle angel” – with such a harsh setting, with all the multi-layered history and a series of dramatic events – the “vanilla” melodramatic facade. All harsh scenes are shot casually, the battle scenes are more surreal, all corners and roughness are smoothed out. Yes, Rodriguez’s directorial style is obvious in the film – all these losses of limbs, fights in the stuffing (which, however, you will not see here), colorful characters – but all this, like the new kinetic body of the main character, adjusts to the declared rating and the young audience.
