How much does John Desko earn as Syracuse lacrosse coach. What is the typical salary range for top NCAA lacrosse coaches. How does Desko’s compensation compare to other top programs.
John Desko’s Coaching Career and Accomplishments
John Desko has had an illustrious career as the head coach of the Syracuse University men’s lacrosse team. He took over the program in 1999 and led the Orange to tremendous success over his 22-year tenure before retiring in 2021. Under Desko’s leadership, Syracuse won 5 NCAA national championships and made 17 Final Four appearances.
Some of Desko’s key accomplishments include:
- 5 NCAA national titles (2000, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2009)
- 17 NCAA Final Four appearances
- 258 career wins
- .746 career winning percentage
- 16 conference regular season titles
- 10 conference tournament championships
- Coached 52 first-team All-Americans
With such an impressive resume, Desko established himself as one of the most successful and respected coaches in college lacrosse history. His salary and compensation package likely reflected his status as an elite coach at a top lacrosse program.
Comparing Lacrosse Coach Salaries Across Programs
To put John Desko’s potential salary in context, it’s helpful to look at compensation for other top NCAA Division I lacrosse coaches:
- Ohio State head coach Nick Myers: $335,000 per year
- Virginia head coach Lars Tiffany: Approximately $300,000-$400,000 per year
- Former Denver head coach Bill Tierney: Estimated $400,000-$500,000 per year
- Former Johns Hopkins coach Dave Pietramala: Estimated $500,000+ per year at peak
While exact figures aren’t publicly available for all programs, these numbers give a sense of the salary range for top coaches. Programs like Syracuse that are perennial contenders typically compensate their coaches at the high end of this range.
Factors Influencing Lacrosse Coach Compensation
Several key factors tend to impact how much NCAA lacrosse coaches earn:
- Program prestige and success
- Coach’s track record and accomplishments
- University budget and resources
- Conference affiliation
- Length of tenure
- Fundraising ability
- Academic performance of student-athletes
Top programs like Syracuse, with a history of success and strong donor support, can typically offer more competitive salaries to attract and retain elite coaching talent. A coach’s ability to consistently win, make deep NCAA tournament runs, and develop All-American caliber players also tends to correlate with higher compensation.
Estimating John Desko’s Salary at Syracuse
While John Desko’s exact salary at Syracuse was not publicly disclosed, we can make some educated estimates based on available information:
- As one of the most successful active coaches, Desko likely earned towards the top end of Division I salaries
- His compensation was likely at least on par with other top ACC coaches
- Given his long tenure and multiple national titles, a salary in the $500,000-$750,000 range seems plausible
- Total compensation including bonuses, camps, and other sources may have exceeded $750,000 annually
Is John Desko’s salary commensurate with his accomplishments? Considering his 5 national championships and consistent success over two decades, a salary at the upper echelon of college lacrosse coaches appears justified. Syracuse’s status as a lacrosse powerhouse and Desko’s contributions to that legacy likely warranted top-tier compensation.
The Economics of College Lacrosse Coaching Salaries
College lacrosse coach salaries, while substantial, pale in comparison to football and basketball coaching contracts. Some key economic factors at play include:
- Lower revenue generation from lacrosse compared to major sports
- Smaller fanbase and media exposure
- Less pressure and scrutiny on lacrosse programs
- Fewer Division I programs competing for top coaches
However, salaries for top lacrosse coaches have risen significantly over the past couple decades as the sport has grown in popularity. Programs are investing more resources to attract elite coaching talent and remain competitive at the highest level.
Impact of Football Revenue on Other Sports’ Coaching Salaries
At many major universities, football program revenue helps subsidize other varsity sports, including lacrosse. This allows athletic departments to offer more competitive salaries to coaches in non-revenue sports.
Does football revenue impact lacrosse coach salaries? In many cases, yes. Schools with highly profitable football programs often have larger overall athletic budgets, allowing them to invest more in Olympic sports. This can create a competitive advantage in attracting and retaining top coaching talent across all sports.
Controversy and Debate Surrounding Coach Compensation
The salaries of college coaches, even in non-revenue sports like lacrosse, sometimes spark debate and controversy. Common points of contention include:
- Whether such high salaries are justified for amateur athletics
- Comparison to faculty and staff salaries at universities
- Questions of equity between men’s and women’s sports
- Concerns about the commercialization of college sports
Proponents argue that top coaches bring value to universities through on-field success, positive publicity, and alumni engagement. Critics contend that coaching salaries have become excessive and detract from schools’ educational missions.
The Future of Lacrosse Coach Compensation
Looking ahead, several factors may influence lacrosse coaching salaries:
- Continued growth in popularity of lacrosse
- Potential changes to NCAA amateurism rules
- Increased competition from professional leagues
- Greater parity among top programs
- Economic pressures on university athletic departments
Will lacrosse coach salaries continue to rise? It’s likely that compensation for top coaches will increase modestly in the coming years, especially at power conference schools. However, the rate of growth may slow compared to recent decades as the sport matures.
As lacrosse expands geographically and more schools invest in competitive programs, there may be increased demand for proven coaches. This could drive up salaries for established winners like Desko. Conversely, economic challenges facing many athletic departments could put downward pressure on coaching compensation across all sports.
The Value of Coaching Beyond Salary
While salary is an important factor, many lacrosse coaches are motivated by factors beyond compensation:
- Passion for the sport and teaching
- Opportunity to shape young athletes’ lives
- Pursuit of championships and on-field success
- Building a program’s legacy and tradition
- Sense of community within lacrosse
For coaches like John Desko, the chance to lead a storied program like Syracuse and compete for national titles likely held tremendous intrinsic value beyond just salary. The relationships formed with players and fellow coaches, as well as the impact on the broader lacrosse community, are often cited by longtime coaches as the most rewarding aspects of their careers.
Balancing Compensation with Program Needs
Athletic directors and university administrators face the challenge of compensating top coaches fairly while also managing overall department budgets. Some key considerations include:
- Allocating resources across all varsity sports programs
- Funding facilities, equipment, and travel
- Supporting academic services for student-athletes
- Investing in marketing and fan engagement
- Meeting Title IX requirements
Successful programs like Syracuse aim to strike a balance – compensating coaches competitively while also ensuring adequate funding for all aspects of the lacrosse program and athletic department. This holistic approach helps create an environment where coaches and student-athletes can thrive on and off the field.
The Legacy of John Desko at Syracuse
Regardless of his exact salary figures, John Desko’s impact on Syracuse lacrosse extends far beyond compensation. His legacy includes:
- Maintaining Syracuse’s status as a perennial national title contender
- Developing dozens of All-Americans and professional players
- Continuing the program’s fast-paced, exciting style of play
- Fostering a strong alumni network and culture of success
- Representing the university with class and integrity
Desko’s salary, while substantial, represents just one aspect of his value to Syracuse University. His contributions to the lacrosse program, athletic department, and broader lacrosse community have been immense over his two-plus decades as head coach.
As the sport of lacrosse continues to evolve, Desko’s tenure at Syracuse will likely be remembered as one of the most successful in college lacrosse history. His ability to adapt to changes in the game while maintaining a consistent level of excellence sets a high bar for coaches who follow in his footsteps.
Ohio State’s LAX coach makes 335k per year how much does Desko make?

Ohio State isn’t a player nationally in lacrosse and they are paying their coach pretty good money. I wonder how much Desko makes he should probably be in the neighborhood of 750k if Ohio State is paying 335k.
He may have his detractors and may tick off portions of the fanbase but I think Desko has done a good job and should command top 3 money in the LAX coaching world.

Total compensation Desko should be double the Ohio State guy. With apparel, donations, base salary he should be at the top and make more than Gait who hasn’t won 1 NC yet and not the 5 Desko has.

Football money is paying his salary, just as it subsidizes a bunch of other sports/coach’s salaries at TOSU.

there are about 60 div lax coaches. a decent demand i would expect. i wonder what the mean salary is on this board for jobs that have thousands of people who can/do it every day. i dont have a problem with a coach making 2-500K, its usually a short term position, tough hours. if the fball/bball coaches maxed out at 1 Million how would that help the industry as a whole?

According to the Cavalier Daily, Dom Starsia made $154,500 last year! Perhaps with other compensation and the camps he makes a bit more. Really interesting to see what Ohio State is paying. Maybe they had to pay a lot to try to keep Breschi and they did not make a lot of changes to the compensation for Meyer. Other than the win against Denver, it seems to me that Ohio State has faltered a bit? I honestly do not pay much attention though. Were they in the playoffs last season or was it the year before?

Timeline
Desko was elected to the National Hall of Fame in May 2020. He’s the third Syracuse head coach to be inducted into their respective sport’s hall of fame after Jim Boeheim and Gary Gait.
He was the ACC coach of the year for the fourth straight season from 2015 to 2018.
Desko started out in the midfield but was switched to defense by assistant coach Jay Gallagher. He earned All-America honors as he helped Syracuse to a 10–5 record in 1979 and the school’s first NCAA playoff berth. His two younger brothers, Dave and Jeff, were also All-American lacrosse players at Syracuse.
Under Desko, Syracuse won 4 straight Big East championships from 2010 to 2013. After joining the ACC in 2013-14, Syracuse won back-to-back ACC Tournament championships in 2015 and 2016. Syracuse was also the regular season champion in 2018.
Desko has won five NCAA Championships as head coach and six more as an assistant coach. In eleven years as head coach, he has coached the Syracuse lacrosse team to seven NCAA finals appearances and nine Final Fours. The most recent championship came in May 2009, Desko led the Orange to their 10th National Championship with a 10–9 overtime comeback victory over Cornell.
Desko was named USILA Division I Coach of the Year for 2008 after guiding the Orange to a title over Johns Hopkins.
Desko also coached Team USA to a runner-up finish at the 2006 World Lacrosse Championship.
John Desko is the head coach of the men’s lacrosse team at Syracuse University, taking over in 1999 from Hall of Fame coach Roy Simmons Jr.
Simmons offered Desko assistant job when assistant coach Jay Gallagher decided to leave Syracuse. Desko made only $1,000 a year as a coach, and waited tables in his spare time. He stayed on as an assistant for next 19 years. After taking over the top job from from Roy Simmons Jr. in 1999, he became the first person outside of the Simmons family to coach Syracuse lacrosse since 1931.
Desko was inducted into the Upstate Chapter of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame as of 1997, Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame in 2008, and the Camillus/West Genesee Hall of Fame in 2011. He was the FieldTurf Coach of the Year in 2013.

Since 2021, we have been working on our service desk. And we can say with confidence that today multi-channel is one of the most important aspects in customer service. It allows you to communicate with the client where it is convenient for him: in instant messengers, by mail or by phone. Thanks to it, representatives of the company can respond faster to requests and meet the needs of users. This improves the quality of service and audience loyalty.
At the same time, due to the security of data processing, accessibility and functionality, Telegram has become one of the most popular instant messengers in the world. According to research , the messenger is used by more than 700 million people in the world. Telegram is in the top 5 most popular messengers on the planet.
Integration with Telegram allows you to expand the capabilities of service desks for the support team. Of course, the messenger is not an ideal tool for business, since the display of data in it is not always correct and convenient, but this problem can be solved.
We thought, what if we combine the capabilities of Telegram with one of the most famous services for business Bitrix24, which is only already used by more than 10 million registered companies in 2021?
In order to communicate with the client in a format convenient for him, and the data was pulled into the most popular Bitrix24 platform, we developed Telegram.A24 – an application in which you can correspond with clients in Telegram without leaving the platform. It allowed creating several company accounts to work with Telegram without requiring the creation of chat bots, integrated with open lines and allowed to save correspondence with the client.
And when we created our service desk, one of the first features we implemented was integration with Telegram, because we already knew that it was important for users.
But is Telegram so effective? Or is technical support by phone, proven over the years, in no way inferior to modern methods of communication?
Technical support by phone – the old and proven way?
In the past, phone support was the only viable way to get help. People called call centers at the numbers indicated in warranty cards or on websites, communicated with operators, tried to solve problems on their own.
The main advantage of telephone technical support is personal communication with the operator. The client can ask questions and get answers on the spot, without waiting for a response letter or in the messenger and without thinking whether the manager will see the appeal.
The contact number for technical support is still hanging on almost every site, but it is used many times less than before. Why is this happening:
Many people feel uncomfortable talking on the phone.
The client does not always hear what the support person is saying due to possible communication interference.
Phone calls take a long time. When the line is busy, the waiting time for an operator response increases significantly, and, as we have said many times in our articles, people DO NOT LIKE TO WAIT.
In addition, telephone technical support is expensive for business: you need to create a call center, hire additional employees, pay for telephony. Therefore, organizing technical support by phone is not the best way to connect a client with support.
Telegram in technical support: new opportunities for optimizing work
We have found several ways to organize high-quality technical support in Telegram using the service desk without leaving the platform and without switching between windows. At the same time, the user will be able to use all the features of service desks: distribution, ordering of requests, analytics and automation of work with clients.
You can work with Telegram using the service desk by using bots, creating a company account to communicate with customers, or through the Bitrix24 activity.
In order to create a company account, you need to link your Telegram account to the service desk. Thanks to this integration, you can communicate with users even in Telegram chats without leaving your workspace and without switching between windows.
Bots can be used to automatically accept applications in Telegram. They are easily created and configured, even integrating with the service desk:
After creating a bot, users can customize its interface, add a ticket form, response templates, and commands.
With the help of a Telegram bot, technical support employees can receive tips for their work:
You can work with Telegram using the Telegram software. A24. It allows you to save the history of correspondence with the client, set restrictions for employees and write to the user even if his data is not entered in Bitrix.
Another way to use Telegram is to activate Bitrix24. Thanks to the activation, Telegram integrates with the service, allowing you to customize messages, assign responsible persons and set the status text.
How companies use Telegram
Telegram is free, feature-rich, and can run on multiple platforms. It allows you to serve customers more efficiently, using automated bots and scripts – fewer operators are required to respond to requests. Companies use the site’s capabilities by creating:
Channels. In the messenger, you can create and manage channels. Users can follow their favorite authors to see text messages, media, and emoji. Business promotion is carried out through the creation of content in their own channels or through advertising in channels with the right audience.
Chats. There are two types of group chats in Telegram: regular (up to 200 users, each of which has the right to add new members and edit the group description) and supergroups (large chats with more than 200 members). They are convenient to use as business chats for companies or to communicate with a group of clients.
Bots. Automate request processing. They are a convenient alternative to mobile applications for companies, since their development requires less resources, and the user does not need to install another application on a smartphone. Bots can communicate with customers, place orders and accept payments.
Telegram expands business opportunities and, together with telephony and e-mail, is part of a multi-channel communication system with customers. We have told you all this to get your opinion:
