Israel beats Austria 5-2 in ‘amazing’ soccer World Cup qualifier
Israel defeated Austria 5-2 in a soccer World Cup qualifier on Saturday night.
The result leaves Israel second in the group after five games were played. It will face off, away from home, with Group F leader Denmark on Tuesday. Denmark has won all five of its qualifying games to date. The group winner qualifies directly for the World Cup finals in Qatar next year; the team in second place advances to a play-off round.
“It’s an amazing feeling, it was a great game for the whole team,” said forward Eran Zahavi, according to Channel 12. “We have an important game against Denmark on Tuesday. It’s hard to come down to earth after a match like that, it was a great game.”
Zahavi scored twice, three days after his hat trick against the Faroe Islands. Austria fought back to 3-2 from 3-0 down before Shon Weissman and Zahavi stretched Israel’s lead again.
The outcome was cheered by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who said it was “not only a tremendous achievement but also one of the greatest games we’ve had.
”

Culture Minister Chili Tropper praised the team for an “excellent” match. “Go, go Israel,” he said.
On Wednesday night, a Zahavi hat trick helped Israel brush past the Faroe Islands 4-0. Zehavi, who plays club soccer for the Dutch side PSV Eindhoven, opened the scoring in the 12th minute and grabbed a second goal just before halftime. He wrapped up his hat trick in the second minute of injury time.

The Austria win strengthened Israel’s hold on second place in Group F, with 10 points from five games, behind Denmark on 15, and ahead of Scotland (8), Austria (7), Faroe Islands (1) and Moldova (1). It still has to play Denmark, Scotland and Austria away from home.

Denmark thrashes Israel 5-0 to dent World Cup soccer qualifying chances
Five players scored as Denmark beat Israel 5-0 on Tuesday to put the Danes on the verge of securing a place at the 2022 World Cup with barely half of the qualifying games played and badly dent Israel’s prospects.
After reaching the semifinals at the European Championship, the Danes now have a perfect record of winning all six of their World Cup qualifying games so far without conceding a goal. One more win could secure a spot at next year’s tournament in Qatar.
For Israel, it was an abrupt return to reality after the euphoria of its 5-2 win against Austria on Saturday.
Israel came into the game in second place in Group F but the closest it came to scoring was when Eran Zahavi put the ball in the net early on, only for it to be ruled out for offside. Otherwise, Israel didn’t record a shot on target.
Yussuf Poulsen got Denmark going in the 28th minute with a goal on the rebound after Israeli goalkeeper Ofir Marciano failed to hold Mikkel Damsgaard’s volley. Three minutes later, Denmark captain Simon Kjaer headed in his team’s second goal from a free kick, before goals from Andreas Skov Olsen and Thomas Delaney.

Denmark leads the group by seven points from Scotland, which beat Austria 1-0 to move up to second in the group.
“Denmark was better than us by every parameter,” Zahavi told Channel 12 news after the game. “We will have to beat Scotland to get something out of this.”
Israel plays Scotland in a pivotal game on October 9.
Finishing second in Group F would give Israel or Scotland a playoff spot and a shot at reaching the World Cup. Scotland has not made it since 1998, while Israel has not qualified since Mexico in 1970.
Depending on results elsewhere, Denmark could guarantee first place and a qualifying spot in its next game against Moldova. Denmark beat Moldova 8-0 in their previous meeting.

Scotland managed a win in Vienna thanks to a 30th-minute penalty from Lyndon Dykes, awarded for a foul on Che Adams following a video review.
Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon kept his team ahead with a superb save to deny Christoph Baumgartner at a corner in the 79th. The Austrian crowd booed the team at the final whistle.
Also in the group, the Faeroe Islands beat Moldova 2-1.

Israel beat Austria in World Cup qualifier, but match overshadowed by fans heckling Arab player – Sports
Israel’s national soccer team wowed fans Saturday, beating Austria 5:2 in a World Cup qualifier. It’s not every day that Israel’s local audience gets to witness their players face-off with a team that only two months ago made it all the way to the Euro 2020 semi-finals, where it was defeated by Italy, the championship’s likely winner.
But the celebration at Haifa’s Sammy Ofer Stadium was overshadowed by fans showering Arab player Munas Dabbur with boos when he scored Israel’s second goal – at the end of a team offensive that he himself led.
Fans have been antagonistic towards Dabbur since he wrote a controversial Instagram post at the height of Jewish-Arab tensions in May. Dabbur criticized the conduct of the Israeli police and the army on the Temple Mount, writing: “God will deal with the perpetrators of injustice.”

Because of the frenzy surrounding the post, Dabbur issued a clarification and did not show up for earlier games. He returned to the team as it started its World Cup qualifiers.
Coach Willi Ruttensteiner said at the end of the game: “I love all the players, including Dabbur, and as a Christian I respect all the players on the Israeli team, without differentiating.
I’m sure that in the next game no one will whistle or boo. The team was united, one unit. I spoke to Dabbur before the game and he told me he would play as usual. He would act professionally.” Dabbur himself asked not to be interviewed after the game.

Ruttensteiner added: “It’s not about me, it’s about the players. I’m very proud of the players because they gave their all in this situation.” When asked about Israel’s chances of reaching the qualifiers for the World Cup as a result of Saturday night’s victory, he called for patience. “We are in second place, but there are still a lot more games to play. We are in a good place but there’s still time.”
Disagreements aside
The fans were thrilled when, bucking the trend in the game, Israel led by two goals, thanks to Dabbur.
This was a natural, instinctive response, despite the whistles and boos against him when he came onto the pitch or kicked the ball. The moments immediately after scoring – when Dabbur kneeled on the pitch and thanked God, and the crowd heard his name on the loudspeaker – led to ugly scenes. The audience that was overjoyed a moment before let out deafening boos.
Some may disagree with the content of Dabbur’s post, others may think, as a Palestinian citizen of Israel, his statements express a pain and identification with his people.
Regardless, the moment he was called to play, he became part of the national team. Anyone who boos him humiliates themselves and the team they supposedly root for.
While the audience’s conduct was in part problematic, the team showed inspiring maturity. The political opinions of the players more or less reflect that of its fans, but disagreements were set aside.
As soon as Dabbur made his goal, all the players ran to hug him.
And if the players understand and act responsibly, hopefully this will trickle down to their fans, or at least some of them. Respect and responsibility are much more important than Saturday night’s big win.

Gadi Kinda to join Israel for World Cup qualifiers in September
Sporting Kansas City midfielder Gadi Kinda has been named to the Israel Men’s National Team for three upcoming matches in 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying.
Kinda and Israel are scheduled to visit Faroe Islands on Sept. 1, host Austria on Sept. 4 and travel to Denmark on Sept. 7 in UEFA Group F of World Cup qualifying. The 27-year-old midfielder will depart for Europe following Sporting Kansas City’s home match against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday at Children’s Mercy Park (tickets).

Kinda will return to the Israel squad after making his senior national team debut on June 5, coming off the bench to score a stunning long-range goal in a 3-1 friendly win at Montenegro. He earned his first Israel start four days later in a 4-0 friendly loss at European powerhouse Portugal. He previously represented his country at the U-18, U-19 and U-21 youth levels from 2011-2016.
Led by head coach Willibald Ruttensteiner, Israel currently occupies third place in Group F behind leaders Denmark and second-place Scotland. Seven group stage matches remain between now and mid-November, with the first-place finisher qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the second-place team advancing to a World Cup playoff contested by other second-place finishers in UEFA in March 2022.
Israel are seeking their second-ever World Cup appearance after competing in the tournament for the first time in 1970.
Kinda has recorded 10 goals and seven assists in 37 appearances for Sporting since joining the club ahead of the 2020 campaign. He has started 14 of 16 MLS matches this season, tallying four goals and three assists for a Sporting Kansas City side that sits in second place in the Western Conference with an 11-4-6 record. Sporting are a perfect 7-0-0 when Kinda scores or assists this year.
Kinda had six goals and four assists during his debut MLS campaign in 2020, landing club Newcomer of the Year honors. He placed sixth among MLS newcomers last year with 10 combined goals and assists while also creating 26 scoring chances, second-most on the team.
Born in Ethiopia and raised in Israel, Kinda spent the first nine seasons of his professional career competing in Israel’s top two divisions, including an eight-year spell at hometown club Ashdod.

Israeli soccer defeat dims dreams of Israel reaching the World Cup in Qatar 2022

Israel’s national soccer team celebrated prematurely after chalking up two wins in the past week, putting itself even closer to securing a berth in the World Cup that will take place in Qatar in 2022.
Israel defeated Austria 5-2 to the cheers of Israeli fans at Sammy Ofer Stadium in Haifa on Saturday, a few days after it defeated the Faroe Islands 4-0. Thanks to these two victories, the Jewish state was second behind Denmark in its group.
However, in a match against Denmark on Tuesday, Israel was trounced 5-0, dimming its hopes for its first World Cup qualification since 1970.
“Denmark was better than us by every parameter,” Eran Zahavi told Channel 12 news after the game. “We will have to beat Scotland to get something out of this.”
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who had previously celebrated the Israeli soccer victories, said it was “not only a tremendous achievement but also one of the greatest games we’ve had.”
While sports and politics are meant to be held separate, in the Middle East they often clash. The Arab-Israeli soccer player Munas Dabbur was booed during Israel’s recent victorious match against the Austrians. Dabbur who scored the second of Israel’s five goals, is one of Israel’s leading soccer players. However, on May 8 during tensions between Arabs and Jews in Israel and Hamas rocket attacks against Israel, Dabbur posted an image of the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem with the text, “God will deal with the perpetrators of injustice.” This upset many Israeli soccer fans.
Nations hostile toward the Jewish state have often boycotted Israeli athletes at international sports events. During the recent Olympics in Tokyo, the international Judo Federation suspended the Algerian judoka Fethi Nourine after he refused to compete against the Israeli judoka Tohar Butbul.
It will be interesting to see if the Israeli team will be received in Qatar. The Gulf state has close ties with the terrorist organization Hamas and its school curriculum is riddled with anti-Semitic and anti-Israel material, according to a report that analyzed Qatari school materials over the past few years. For instance, Qatari school materials praised Hamas’ rocket terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians and the Jewish state was erased from the map.
However, as upcoming host of the world’s largest international soccer event, Qatar will likely have no choice but to accept the Israeli team if it succeeds in qualifying.
Qatar’s regime responded to the historic Arab-Israeli Abraham Accords in 2020 by declaring that it would not establish ties with the Jewish state. Doha later softened its position by stating that the timing was not right for normalization with Israel.
In 2014, Bennett – who at the time was Israel’s economic minister – accused Qatar of financing radical Islamic terrorism in Gaza against Israel.
“If we want this to stop, we have to stop the funding – the biggest funder of radical Islam(ic) terror is Qatar. We have to get Qatar to stop funding Hamas, Al Qaeda, Al Nusra and ISIS with money,” Bennett declared.
At the time, Bennett also urged FIFA, the international soccer federation, to cancel plans to allow Qatar to host the World Cup 2022.
“We have to call on FIFA (to) cancel that: don’t allow them to hold the World Cup because this is a terror state who’s funding most of the world terror. If we stop the money, terror stops and this whole thing stops,” Bennett said.
In recent months, the Bennett-led government has demanded that Qatari funds for Gaza be transferred to banks controlled by the Palestinian Authority so they do not reach the Hamas regime in Gaza.
90,000 Israel’s national team in full force withdrew from the 2021 World Cup
The Israeli national rhythmic gymnastics team has decided to withdraw from the upcoming World Championships in Japan with its full complement. Information about this appeared on the website of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).
