Pocket 34 Revisited – Lacrosse All Stars

After some informative comments on our Pocket 34 post, I decided to give this thing a second look. I glanced at the Lacrosse Forums stringing section, but then thought better of it. I’ve seen enough pictures of variations of the Pocket 34 now to give my own version a go. Ripping someone else off is fine, but I wasn’t feeling it. And it’s always more fun to figure things out yourself. I tried to figure out the keys to what the stringing did to the mesh and the pocket overall and then tried to recreate those effects using knots I am more familiar with. In the end, my pocket worked out really well, but it’s certainly no Pocket 34. That much is certain.
I started out with the top string and from every picture I’ve seen, the key is to align the mesh as tightly as possible to the scoop. This stringing style was evidently developed around the Warrior Evolution and since I was using a Gait Torque, I had to make some adjustments. I ended up going with a variation of Anthony Kelly’s top string except I used a 9 diamond top, whereas A-Train used a 10 diamond top layer.
The top of the sidewalls need to be pretty tight. You don’t have to go over the top, but definitely make sure there isn’t a high bag in your mesh. The key to the stick is right in the middle of the sidewalls. This is where the legendary knot comes into play. Like I said, I didn’t scour the LF to find the exact knot but I focused on the principle behind it, and that is to pull the mesh into a natural V that your shooters will eventually overlap. The “pull” on the mesh only needs to be slight, but it should be just noticeable. This is creating the channel for the ball to sit in.
The rest of the mesh needs to be secured tightly to the plastic and while you don’t want it to bunch, make sure to use every hole and that you have enough mesh grouped in that area of the stick to create the bottom of your pocket. The tie off at the bottom is simple with a wide loop. I went through 8 of 10 holes.
In the Pocket 34, the lower V goes across 3 mesh holes and then turns toward the sidewall. This is because the Pocket 34, like Anthony Kelly, uses a 10 diamond top for their mesh. I still like my 9 and it is why my lower V is only 2 mesh holes wide before turning. I find the level of the lower V by using the following mesh hole count from the top: gap, nylon, nylon, gap, upper V, gap, Lower V. I do not count the mesh row attached to the scoop since it is secured so tightly to the plastic. My upper V is 4 mesh holes wide and the pocket 34 is 5 mesh holes wide.
The two nylon shooters are placed together one row below the top of the mesh. Ideally, your mesh channel peaks around the lower nylon shooter. Where the nylon falls is more an issue of personal preference though in my opinion. For more whip, lower it and for less, move it higher. I didn’t really try to string the Pocket 34. I didn’t even have the right head! But I applied the principles that the pocket employs and came out with a great mesh pocket. I can only imagine what a perfect version of this stringing style is like… maybe I’ll try that next. I’ll definitely need help.

How to String a Lacrosse Pocket
When it comes to lacrosse, your head string is personal. Different playing styles, skill levels and positions demand different stringing styles. Get started with these basic stringing techniques.
Pocket Construction
- Diamond Pocket: Tears in your diamond mesh occurs normally over time, first in the sidewalls, which sustain continual stress as the impact of the ball pulls the mesh against the sidewalls.
- Hard Mesh: These pockets tend to allow for quick releases and a longer break-in than soft mesh. They offer a long life span and a reliable pocket shape.
- String: Different strings have different fraying effects on the mesh over time, as well, but leather string and shooting string tend to be the most resilient and gentle.
- Sections: Top-string attaches the mesh to the stick scoop. Sidewalls and bottom string attach the mesh to the throat. Shooting strings create the shape and contour of the pocket body
- Tracks and channels are recommended for advanced players who have a consistent, controlled throw. Loose pockets are better for beginners or players who with a lot of fakes or hits.
Different Kinds of Lacrosse Pockets
Pita Pocket
This pocket works the best for attack players and middies who like lots of whip and need ball control. Materials include 4 leathers, 2 sidewalls, 4 nylon strings (2 short, 1 medium, 1 long) and four shooting strings (3 hockey lace, 1 nylon).
- First, take the 4 leathers and put them in the stick and pull them tight. You can put a little cloth tape on the tops to prevent them from coming loose.
- Put the sidewall strings in the holes of the head. This will be pulled tight and remain this way.
- Take the 2 short nylons and tie a knot at one end of each.
- Thread it through the top hole of the stick and lace it between the outside leather and the sidewall. You should make about 5 or 6 knots on the leather.
- String these nylons tightly, pulling the outside leathers close to the sidewalls. Tie these nylons off through a bottom hole of the stick.
- Twist this nylon, looping it around the middle leathers the same amount of times you did on the side nylons. This twist should be tight, pulling the middle leathers close together.
- Make sure the knots on the middle leathers are in the middle of the knots on the outside leathers.
- Now take the longest piece of cross lace and string it between the outside and middle leathers like you would in a normal 6 diamond. String this nylon loosely.
- Tie it off at the bottom and let out some leather to make a pocket.
The Corner Pocket
This is a classic, versatile pocket configuration. Materials include 1 soft mesh piece, 2 leathers, 2 short nylons and the 3 sidewalls.
- Cut your mesh piece to about the width of a ball. That is about 2 or 3 rows of diamonds short of each side. Burn the edges so it won’t fray.
- Lace the mesh into the top of the head on one sidewall. The mesh should reach to the outside holes at the top of your head.
- Tie that string off and take your 2 leathers and weave them on the outside diamonds of the mesh piece. Make sure you loop the leathers around the top of the stick first.
- Take the leathers through their normal holes at the bottom of the head and insert the sidewalls as normal.
- Once the sidewalls are in, take the 2 short nylons and, starting in a hole at the top of the stick, weave them down, attaching the leathers, and mesh piece, to the sidewalls.
- Tie these off and use the extra to close off the hole at the bottom of the stick where the mesh meets the head. Now add your shooting strings.
- This pocket works the best with 3 or 4 hockey laces strung close together.
- A piece of tape (about 1/8 inch wide) around each knot of the nylon may prevent wear and breakage at the sidewalls.
The Hard Mesh Pocket
This pocket is great for keeping whip at a minimum or playing in wet weather wet weather conditions. Materials include 1 durable mesh piece and 3 sidewalls.
- Attach the top of the mesh to the top of the head, similar to the way you would string soft mesh.
- Tie a knot at 1 end of the sidewall and thread it through one of the holes at the bottom of the head.
- Insert the sidewall by weaving it on the outside diamonds of the mesh piece. Make sure to loop the sidewall around the top of the stick first.
- Once the sidewall gets to the top of the mesh piece, put the sidewall through the top hole of the stick and start going back down, this time wrapping the sidewall around itself and the mesh piece.
- This should be done rather loosely to give it some kind of pocket.
- Tie it off at the bottom of the stick and then use it to attach the bottom of the mesh to the head.
- Once the mesh is in place you can put in the whip strings. Hockey lace works best here.
The Perfect Pocket
This pocket plays with little to no whip and holds the ball tightly in one spot. Materials include 4 leathers, 5 medium nylons and shooting strings.
- Leave the leathers through the head, leaving them loose. Add the sidewalls and leave them tight.
- Tie off a sidewall at one end. Thread it through the hole at the top of the stick, then run it through the top loops of the leathers where they meet the top of the stick.
- Continue with the sidewall, threading it through all 4 leathers and then tying it off at the top hole in the other side of the stick.
- Take your nylons and thread each one of them over the sidewall at the top. Make sure you fold them exactly in half.
- Take the 2 halves and twist loosely, knotting between 4 to 8 times around the leathers.
- Tie the nylons off at the bottom of the head and add the whip strings. Hockey strings are recommended.
The 9 Piece Mesh
This is an all-purpose soft mesh pocket that’s easy to string. Materials include 1 soft piece of mesh, two sidewalls, 4 hockey lace shooting strings, a long piece of regular shooting string and a short piece of cross lace or sidewall.
- Attach the mesh to the top of your stick with the large shooting string.
- Then, starting from the top, use the sidewalls to attach the mesh to the frame moving straight down the side of the stick.
- After you’ve got both sidewalls in you need to add the 4 shooting strings, weaving them in like a ladder from top (tightest) to bottom (loosest).
- Use the short piece of cross lace or sidewall to tie off the bottom of the mesh. This should be done so that the mesh is even and there are no wrinkles in the mesh.
Goalie Mesh
This is the goalie version of the standard corner pocket. Materials include 1 piece of goalie mesh, 2 sidewalls, 2 medium nylons, 2 regular shooting strings, 1 long sidewall, 4 long hockey laces.
- Attach the mesh to the top of the head, using the sidewall or a goalie leather.
- Add the sidewalls, leaving them kind of loose.
- Now, take the regular shooting strings and tie off 1 end at the top of the head, preferably on the outermost hole on the top plastic.
- Weave the shooting string in and out of the last row of mesh on either side all the way to the bottom.
- Tie it off at one of the holes at the bottom of the head, but leave them loose for a nice pocket.
- Connect the mesh to the sidewalls using the medium nylons and working your way down from the top. Knot the nylons around the shooting strings about 10 to 15 times and tie them off at the bottom.
- Use the extra sidewall to attach the bottom of the mesh piece to the head, closing off the gap so the ball doesn’t fall through.

How to tension the drive belt
One of the technical works that the car owner can perform on his own without the involvement of car service specialists is the tightening of the alternator belt. Driving a vehicle with a loose alternator belt negatively affects the battery and can lead to its complete discharge and failure. That is why, when the first signs of a weakening of the alternator belt appear, it is important to tighten it in order to normalize the battery charging and the operation of the car’s electrical equipment.
Please note: On some vehicles, the alternator belt also drives the pump. If it is not pulled up in time, this will lead to negative consequences. At a minimum, the risk of engine overheating will increase, which, in turn, may result in the need for overhaul.
Symptoms of a loose alternator belt

- Tighten the nuts that secure the generator.

Although there are also designs with two V-ribbed belts, usually a separate belt drives the unit, which is not installed on all engine modifications (cars).
Are chain chains more reliable?
There is an opinion that the chain drive of the gas distribution mechanism is more reliable than the belt drive. But do not forget that the coolant pump is rotated by the accessory drive belt. And, accordingly, if it breaks off, it will only be possible to get to the side of the road, and even then by inertia.
But in engines where the timing belt is driven by a belt, the rotation of the pump can be both from the toothed belt and from the accessory drive belt. Belt tension
In total, there are three options for the correct tensioning of the accessory drive belts.
Belts that cannot be tensioned. Ford practices widespread use of such belts. They were also installed on some modifications of the Lada Grants.A similar principle is applied to Vesta. This is perhaps the worst type of belt. Suppose, on a long journey, your belt begins to slip, and you cannot tighten it – only a replacement. It is not known which will end earlier: the belt or the road.
Belts with automatic tensioners. An excellent principle to always keep the belt properly tensioned. The resource of such a duo is maximum. But if, in the presence of automation, you hear the squeak of the belt, then it’s time to think about replacing the belt, and possibly the tensioner.
Systems with manual belt tension adjustment. They are found not only on domestic cars. For example, on the famous Japanese 1.6-liter engine installed in the Nissan Note, the author had to adjust the squealing belt after only 12 thousand kilometers. And on domestic cars, for example, on a Lada Grant (Kalina) with air conditioning, you can apply a tensioning method that allows you to tighten the belt in moderation, but no more.
In the case of a manual tensioner, the accessory drive belt should be installed as follows.Having tightened the belt clearly weaker than the norm, we start the engine and turn on the air conditioner – the load on the belt increases, and it begins to squeal. Directly with the engine running (being careful), we rotate the drive belt tensioner until the extraneous sounds disappear. We stop the engine and lock the tensioner. You can check the tension of the accessory drive belt again by starting the engine and applying maximum load on the belt (air conditioning and turning on all electrical consumers in the car).

How to tension the alternator belt? – video stretching on different cars
The alternator belt performs a very important mission – it transfers the rotation of the crankshaft to the alternator pulley, which charges the battery while driving, and from it the current goes to all electricity consumers in your car.
All drivers are advised to check the alternator belt tension from time to time. A correctly tensioned belt should not bend by more than one centimeter if you press on it with an effort of three to four kilograms. You can also use a dynamometer for checking (an ordinary steelyard is suitable) – if you hook its hook on the belt and pull it to the side, it will shift by a maximum of 10-15 millimeters with an effort of 10 kg / cm.
If there is neither a ruler nor a dynamometer at hand, then you can check it by eye – if you try to twist the belt, then it should turn a maximum of 90 degrees, no more.
When over time the degree of belt tension decreases and it stretches, then a characteristic creak is heard – the belt slips onto the pulley and begins to warm up. This is fraught with the fact that over time it can break. In addition, the crankshaft pulley makes more idle turns, that is, it works ineffectively and the generator does not fully generate current – the entire electrical system of the car suffers.
Tensioning the alternator belt is not the most difficult task, especially on domestic VAZs and Ladas.In more modern models, in the same Prior, for example, there is a tension roller with an offset center, which adjusts the degree of tension of the belt drive.
Belt tensioning work can be complicated due to the inconvenient location of the generator and the crankshaft pulley. Some models need to be driven into the inspection pit, in others it is enough to simply open the hood, for example for the VAZ 2114. On classic VAZ models, everything is done simply: the generator is attached to the crankcase with a long bolt, thanks to which you can move the generator in the vertical plane, and on top there is a bar with a slot for one more bolt to fix the position of the generator in the horizontal plane.
All that is needed is to loosen the generator fastener, unscrew the nut on the bar, fix such a position when the belt is sufficiently tensioned, tighten the nut and the generator fastener.
In no case should the belt be pulled too tight, because this will lead to the fact that too much pressure will be exerted on the bearing of the alternator pulley and it will simply crumble over time, which will notify you with a characteristic whistle, rattle and insufficient battery charge.
On Lada Kalina, the alternator belt is tensioned using the tensioner rod. It is enough just to unscrew the counter-nut, slightly unscrew the tensioner rod itself, and then tighten the nut into place. In the same way, you can loosen the belt tension, and if you need to completely change it, then the tensioner rod is unscrewed and a new belt is installed.
It should be noted that when tensioning the alternator belt, do not forget to check its condition – it should not have cracks or scuffs.If there are any, then it is better to buy a new belt, since it is not so expensive.
If we are talking about Lada Priora, where the alternator belt describes a much longer trajectory – it also rotates the pulleys of the air conditioner and power steering, then the roller is responsible for the tension there.
If you do not have experience in tensioning such belts, then it is better to do all this at a service station, although the procedure itself is not difficult – you need to loosen the roller mounting nut, then rotate the eccentric clip with a special tension wrench until the belt is tensioned, tighten the fastening nut back.But the fact is that it is very difficult to guess the correct belt tension, since the area of its contact with the pulleys decreases due to the trajectory. You can try to act at random.
The alternator belt is stretched in about the same way on other more modern models, however, in order to get to it, you need to remove the wheels, unscrew the engine mud flaps or plastic protection, remove the timing cover, which, of course, takes a lot of time.
