AHRA 2018 keynote speaker shares insights on creating a culture of heroes in medical imaging.

When asked “what is a hero?”, many people respond that it is an ordinary person who did an extraordinary thing. Kevin Brown, keynote speaker at the AHRA2018 conference, thinks we should flip that tired, rote definition. He believes instead that heroes are extraordinary people who choose not to be ordinary – and that every one of us has the power to be a hero.

Kevin Brown was the keynote speaker at the opening ceremony at AHRA 2018 in Orlando Florida.

Brown explained that all heroes have something in common: they help people. Given that, it would seem that everyone at the conference should be tying on their superhero capes. After all, many hospitals and imaging sites talk about “putting patients first” or state that, “no one is more important than the patient.”

But is your imaging facility delivering on that philosophy? Do your patients feel like they are the only person in the room when checking in with the receptionist? Do they feel like they have 100 percent of the rad tech’s attention while undergoing an exam? Are the interactions during this visit positive enough to make the patient choose your facility – over all the other providers – the next time they need an exam? If not, you’ve lost a competitive edge. Now you can only compete on price.

Creating a culture of heroes in medical imaging

Brown encouraged everyone to tap into your own super powers to influence and shape the way that staff throughout your organization treat patients. How? By first creating an exceptional experience for the people inside your organization. Treat your staff and co-workers with kindness and respect, and they in turn will treat your patients that way.

Healthcare leaders should recognize that employees need more than just the equipment to do their job or a paycheck at the end of the week. They also need support and validation. A real superhero understands – and delivers – the reinforcement and support that people want. Similarly, patients need more than imaging exams. They need reassurance, a bright smile, undivided attention.

Brown illustrated the power of the personal experience by sharing humorous stories about his attachment to his hairdresser and favorite fast food restaurant that have earned his loyalty by making him feel special. And he tugged at heartstrings with a personal story about how the caring attitude and personal attention of a chef at Disney World led to a lasting and caring relationship with his son who has autism.

Being a hero part two: no strings attached

Even superheroes have busy schedules and shortages of resources. How can a medical administrator be all powerful when paperwork and meetings are sapping your energy like a load of kryptonite? Brown says it is accomplished by being in the moment; by showing up fully and attentively. Focus on “the now” and the person standing in front of you, and not on “what’s next”. Most importantly, offer help without expecting anything in return – no strings attached.

To illustrate the point, Brown encouraged attendees to think about all the people who made a positive difference in their lives even when the interactions were short lived. Then he asked attendees to consider whether and how many people would think of them if asked the same question.

Radiology administrators don’t wear capes and they would be foolish to leap a tall building. But we all have the power to embrace a simply philosophy: be kind for no reason, and help others without expecting anything in return. In doing so, you are likely to build a more compassionate workforce that truly does put the patient first, and sets your organization apart from the competitors.

Be A Hero By Helping Others ‘With No Strings Attached’

While everyone understands that “being helpful” can be good for business, too many organizations are “only willing to be helpful to the extent that there is a return on investment,” author and motivational speaker Kevin Brown said during XChange 2019 on Sunday.

“Heroes help people with no strings attached,” Brown said during the opening keynote at XChange 2019, which is being hosted by CRN parent The Channel Company this week in Las Vegas. “It’s the ‘no strings attached’ part that we have trouble with … We like the rules of engagement, the conditions–‘I’ll do this for you if you do this for me.'”

But heroes, both inside and outside of business, have recognized that just “being helpful” when there’s an immediate ROI is not enough to make a profound difference, said Brown, author of “The Hero Effect.”

In his hour-long keynote, Brown shared examples from his own life of people who went the extra mile, even without promise of reward, to be helpful.

In the anecdotes he shared–a hairdresser who provided stunning service during his first appointment, a chef at a Disney World restaurant who cared for his young autistic son’s dietary needs, an early mentor who taught him to become a salesman during a rough period in his life–the extra efforts made a huge impact on everyone involved.

For instance, the hairdresser got a client for life, Brown said, while in the case of the early business mentor, a lifelong friendship resulted. The Disney World chef ended up implementing a new dietary needs training program for her staff–dubbed the “apple pancakes experience,” since that is what the chef had gone out of her way to make for Brown’s son, Josh.

“How do you own a moment in time so fully and completely that it transcends special needs, race, religion, gender, and every other label we like to slap on each other? How do you do that?” Brown said. “You want to take your business places it’s never been? You want to grow your people to a level they’ve never even aspired to? You want to give back to your home and your communities in ways that it never has been [given to] before? It starts right here in this space. Because if you don’t own this, somebody else will. There is somebody hot on your heels right now. An up-and-comer, striving, growing, reaching. And they’re ready to clean your clock. ”

Everyone is “chasing satisfaction,” but satisfaction is not enough, Brown said.

“We’ll pay a premium for someone who does more than they’re paid to do,” Brown said. “In the absence of it, we will become commoditized and have to compete on price alone.”

Chad Hodges, vice president of business development at Rancho Cordova, Calif.-based Enterprise Networking Solutions, told CRN that Brown’s talk resonated with his own “pay-it- forward” mentality in business and life.

“Some people have a tendency to hoard knowledge, because they think it’s going to make them more important, or better. But the reality is, our time on this earth is short. So let’s share as much as we can,” Hodges said. “I think if you’re going through life only wondering what you’re getting out of it, you’re never fulfilled.”

Juan Fernandez, vice president of managed IT services at Oklahoma City-based ImageNet Consulting, told CRN that he believes many in the IT industry have “lost sight of the human aspect of caring. ”

“[Brown] mentioned that today–we’re not paying attention to the smiles, and whether or not we’re generating a smile. We’re paying attention to whether or not I’m going to pay my bills, or what my bonus is going to look like, or am I going to make my quarter,” Fernandez said. “We’ve lost a lot of the human aspect of why we became business owners. And it was to change something for the better.”

Brown said that investing yourself “fully in this moment” with other people is the key to really making a difference–whether you’re working in customer service or running the whole business.

“I mean no disrespect by this, but anybody can do what you do. With enough training and time, I could do what you do, and do it at a high level. With enough training and enough time, you could do what I do, and do it at a high level,” he said.

“The fact that you’re brilliant at what you do, the fact that you’re the best of the best at what you do, the fact that you help move people from where they are to some place better, solve their most pressing issues with excellence–that is icing on the cake, ladies and gentlemen, but that is not why people come to you,” Brown said. “People don’t come to you for what you do. They come to you for who you are.”

 Nezu was the smartest being in the world. It was not a brag, it was simple fact. High Spec was the single most strongest intelligence Quirk in the world, and it was in his paws. 

 Due to that fact, Nezu often was asked to look over various experiments or was asked to keep dangerous experiments under his care just in case. Some of them were simple machines. Only once someone was stupid enough to try it with a child they had basically made into a weapon.

 Those people were dead now, with their experiment happily working under Nezu as a teacher and also as a rescue hero, happily using the number they had been assigned in an attempt to dehumanize them as a hero name. Thirteen loved to cackle with Nezu over the fact that they had managed to get around their tormentors.   

 Nezu was used to having dangerous machines or experiments under his care, just as he was used to people trying to steal them.

 The people being successful was not something he was used to.

 “What did they steal?” Eraserhead, Aizawa Shouta and one of his favourite staff members asked, looking around the wrecked room that Nezu kept the ‘it works but is too dangerous to be allowed to actually be put into production or used unless it is the end of the world but it could be useful at the end of the world so we need to keep it’ machines.

 The name was created by Thirteen when bored. Nezu just found it funny.

 “It’s hard to tell…” Nezu muttered, looking around.

 Not the death ray, not the cyro gun, no-

 “Quirk Amplifier,” Nezu said, seeing no sign of it.

 “Amplifier?”

 “It enhances someone’s Quirk to a thousand times its strength. All users died though after letting go, too much flowing through them.” Nezu informed Shouta, frowning at the room. “In a situation where it is needed, it would be useful. For example- over a hundred years-”

 “Shield Maiden,” Aizawa interrupted, nodding. He named a hero from a hundred years back who had managed to create a shield to protect the entire Earth from being destroyed by an asteroid. She had died after the task, but she lived on in history as one of the greatest heroes ever. If a situation like that happened again, an amplifier would be useful.

 “Exactly. If needed, we could use it. And now it is gone.”

 “…So who took it?” Aizawa asked. Nezu frowned.

 “We need to find out, and find out why not alarms went off,” Nezu informed Aizawa before they left, Nezu dropping to all fours to move fast. He rarely did so. Even in a Quirked world people were uneasy around those too odd or strange for them to understand, and the fact he was the smartest being in the world while not being human disturbed many. As such, in order to not cause too much trouble for himself or for others, he acted as human as possible. It was easier that way.

  However, around this she trusted such as his staff, he acted more animalistic at times. It was nice to do so. He wasn’t human, and he didn’t like pretending he was.

 The two reached his office where he scurried up to his chair and pulled up the cameras of the school on his computer. Aizawa moves to stand behind him and watch himself. 

 On screen, three people, two female and one male, walked down the hall dressed in janitorial uniforms. UA often did have students clean much like other Japanese schools but due to the sometimes dangerous substances left by Quirks, plus often how tired students could be or how injured they could be after Hero classes, they had janitors as well. 

 They watched as the male placed a small explosion on the door that broke the lock, letting them in. The cameras inside the room showed them hunting for the amplifier before finding it and leaving.

 Nezu went through more cameras before finding them leaving the school. He dug into the electronic records to find that they were temporary agents for a company they usually hired from due to some accidents.

 “Faked background check?” Asked Aizawa.

 “Or they stole the uniforms anyway, most likely.” Nezu pulled up the picture of the three temporary hires to reveal they weren’t the same people. “I don’t think they’re alive.”

 “Dammit.” Aizawa pulled out his phone. “I’ll contact the underground association, see if anyone’s heard anything.”

 “I’ll alert the Commission.”

 As both went to work, Nezu wondered why they needed the amplifier. What was their goal?

 Time watched as his sisters looked over the amplifier. They’d done it. He’d never sent himself or anyone so far back before. God was he amazing. 

 He fingered the future version of the amplifier around his neck. Or well, he was amazing with help.

 “We’re all set,” Portal said to him, his sister looking at him in worry. “… you’ll let go when we start won’t you?” It wasn’t really a question.

 “It’s starting to fail and besides- We’re all dead.” He said to them. “You, me and Watcher we’re all dead. Even if I hadn’t used this, sending us this far back would kill us. It’s the day of our birth sure, but changing the timeline so much will erase us from this reality.”

 “I really don’t wanna talk about realities.” Said Watcher. She held in her hand a vial, and she looked angry. “Knows that there is one with fucking Limitless still around pisses me the fuck off.” 

 “Agreed.” Portal snarled. “That cunt needs to fucking die.”

 “And we’re doing it.” Time said, smiling. “We’re killing her today.” The two women smiled at him. 

 “We love you brother.” They told him just as they started the version of the amplifier they stole. Just as the one he was wearing was beginning to fail. He closed his eyes.

 Burn in Hell Midoriya Izumi, the Hero Limitless.

The day started like any other. Midoriya Izumi was dressed in her uniform and was heading to school after having dropped Tomoe off at daycare, ignoring the stares of the other people as she jogged, trying to remember her plan for the day.

 ‘School, hit the beach after and try to get an area cleaned up. All Might isn’t with me today so I have to stick to lighter stuff and leave Tomoe at the daycare for longer,’ she thought, feeling a pain at the fact she couldn’t pick her daughter up right after school. 

 She hated how she got her daughter. She loathed the circumstances. She wanted Yamanaka-sensei to burn in hell for what he did to her. She had been thirteen when he did that to her and she hated it. Hated it so much she choked on her hatred.

 But she would not regret Tomoe. Not like her mother regretted her. She wouldn’t.

 As she jogged, she noticed a strange feeling in the air. A sense of anticipation. Like something would happen soon and fast. 

 Everyone seemed to feel it. They traded looks and shifted. She noticed a few sidekicks on the streets doing patrolling were on edge as they looked around.

 Nothing could prepare her for the sudden portal-like thing that opened up. Two women looked out at the world, both blonde and both looking exhausted but gleeful.

 “Hello, I’m Portal.” hissed one of them. The other grinned. The two were completely identical and looked eager.

 “I’m Watcher.” said the other. “And our… our brother.” Watcher choked sightly.

 “Our brother was Time.” hissed Portal. “We’re here to stop the rise of Limitless!” Portal’s words caused Watcher to laugh.

 “You don’t know who Limitless is. Limitless is the future world’s greats hero,” Watcher snarled, the words ‘world’s greatest hero’ said in a sing-song mocking tone. “We came BACK to stop the rise of Limitless and the other great heroes.” 

 “Back to today, when we’re born and before they even get to school.” sneered Portal. “My power is the ability to project images to people of my choosing. Watcher here has the ability to show the future as long as she has a focal point.” 

 “And what do I have here?” asked Watcher mockingly, holding up a vial of something red. “Blood, from Limitless. As a focal point, can’t go wrong.” the two laughed and Watcher shotgunned the vial down her throat, while Portal continued their speech.

 “Time brought us back, with help from our version of the Quirk amplifier Nezu had stored away. It killed him. And we’ll die using this one.” she held up the box the two were touching. “But our goal will be reached. Every single secret, every single lie or truth will be shown.”

 “Death to Limitless.” Watcher snarled before her eyes flashed white. “Watch your future shown to Japan itself.” 

 With that, the screen began morphing. 

 ‘Combination of Quirks. Portal is seeing what Watcher is showing her and then projecting it to everyone,’ Izumi thought instantly. She felt a hole in her gut as the images began to form, taking some time.  

 ‘Who is Limitless?’

Across the country, there were multiple reactions.

 “Get everyone we have on hunting these villains down!” an agent of the Hero Public Safety Commission shouted at another as people ran around, contacting as many heroes as they could. No one knew who Limitless was, but from the sounds of it, they were young. Very young.

 Hopefully within the fifteen to sixteen range, but possibly younger. With the introduction of Quirks, schools had begun starting later than normal due to the time it often took to get control over a Quirk, so the agent knew the age was probably from three to maybe fifteen or sixteen. Possibly they meant university but they hadn’t heard of any potential hero in any school calling themselves Limitless.

 ‘Possibly they’re from another school and just planning on entering a hero university, but doubtful.’ the agent thought, watching as people scrambled.

 Endeavour frowned at the screen, eyeing his son. He was on his mandatory rest day and had planned on spending the day training Shouto when this screen appeared.

 ‘It has to be Shouto who is this Limitless. Who else could it be?’ he wondered to himself, his frown deepening as Shouto watched the screen blankly himself. It was possible it was someone else, Endeavour would admit but he couldn’t believe it. His son had the greatest potential with his Quirk. No one else could be it.

 Shouto himself watched the screen thoughtfully. He had planned on using something ice-related for a hero name, to piss off his father. Limitless… hmm, he was Limitless in his abilities with his mother’s Quirk. 

 It sounded good.

 Bakugou Katsuki scowled at the screen, explosions crackling in his hands. 

 How dare those shitty villains threaten him!? He was the future number one, he would topple All Might from his throne and no one could stop him! Not even these shitty villains from the future!

 The name is stupid but he guesses Murder probably wasn’t allowed in a hero name, which is bullshit, so he’ll make do.  

 He’ll crush them.

 Stain was impressed. This Limitless was enough to have three villains scurrying back in time to stop them. 

 However, it appeared there were secrets in the past of Limitless, enough that the villains thought it possible for them to be removed from the future.

 He would watch. And if Limitless was a good hero, he would allow them to live and grow.

 If not, their blood would spill.

 Shigaraki Tomura scowled, scratching his neck as he glared at the screen. Stupid cheaters. Even if it was helping him and the others, he hated cheaters! If you weren’t willing to grind and work your way up to the next level you didn’t deserve the status. It was that simple. 

 He glared at the screen while Kurogiri watched silently.

 “I hate them.” he hissed through his teeth. 

 “They can give us info. Think of it as a bonus difficulty. We might know this Limitless’s secrets, but they might know us too. ” 

 It did help to think of it like that, Shigaraki found. He grinned.

 Time to see who it was.

 Nezu and Aizawa frowned at the screen. They were too late.

 “Can we track them?” Aizawa asked. Nezu shook his head.

 “No, it’s too late to try. We just need to watch, and protect Limitless.” 

Whoever they were.

Movie review – Kubo and The Two Strings: A Stop-Motion Hero’s Journey

Laika, the animation studio behind “Kubo and the Two Strings” and its predecessors Coraline and Paranorman, is one of the few places still doing stop-motion animation, which is unfortunate, because it’s one of the major reasons Laika’s films work so well. The greatest strength of the studio is its ability to funnel their creativity into building engaging worlds. Whether it be the memorably morbid Paranorman or Caroline, or in this particular case the high fantasy of “Kubo and the Two Strings,” they’ve consistently created new and fascinating worlds with each of their films. Now everything in the film contributes to that, it has to, but their stop-motion style is a big part of why it works so well. Another stop motion film “Wallace and Gromit” portrays generally mundane things, but still visually engages its audience. Laika isn’t portraying mundane things. In fact the exaggerated fantastical character that it places in wild imaginative places are about as far from mundane as you can get. Of all their films, “Kubo and the Two Strings” takes advantage of that to the greatest extent.

There’s a sense of scale to Kubo that hasn’t been in Laika’s other work. You can see it in the environments, you can see it in the storytelling, you can even see it in the mythos the film creates. It pervades every piece of the film, and is really the defining difference between it and their earlier work. It’s also why this is, in my opinion, their most visually arresting film yet. The breadth of environments and characters they’re allowed to create really gives them an incredible range to work with, on a scale they’ve never had. It makes the film visually arresting, and it reinforces everything that the film is doing whether it be world building or even character development.

One of the other things “Kubo and the Two Strings” does incredibly well is its casting. Charlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey both fill out their supporting roles incredibly well largely because they’re allowed to just play versions of themselves. If you’ve seen them act before then the roles they play will be familiar, but those roles really work within the context of the film. It’s simply good casting. The same goes for the titular Kubo. It’s very easy for children protagonists to be unlikable, especially when they play surrogate to the audience. But Kubo balances childhood vulnerability and lightheartedness with the necessary traits for him to function as protagonist in what is essentially a hero’s journey. It makes him a believable, relatable character that, along with his strong supporting cast, really gets us invested in the film.

My only real major issue with the film is that there are two points in it where the location was abruptly changed and each time it caused an awkward break in the film’s pacing. They weren’t a huge problem, and the pacing of the film overall was fine, but they were both such specifically bad transitions that they merit mention.

All in all though, “Kubo and the Two Strings” is just a great new step for Laika and an even better opportunity to take the family out to see a film. It looks great, has a strong cast and does some of the best world building I’ve seen all year.

In the undisputed leaders of the national rating – the poem “I loved you …” and “Tatiana’s letter to Onegin”, among the works of Pushkin the most beloved are “Eugene Onegin” and “The Captain’s Daughter”.

June 6 is the birthday of Alexander Pushkin. This year, 222 years have passed since the birth of the first Russian poet. By this date, the MyBook book service conducted a survey among readers who named their favorite works of Pushkin and their favorite characters created by the imagination of a genius.

In the course of the poll, it was possible to compile a rating of the popularity of Pushkin’s lines. According to TASS, the first place in the ranking was taken by the poem “I loved you …”, dedicated, as researchers believe, to Anna Olenina, who in 1828-1829 was the poet’s beloved.This lyrical miniature of Pushkin was recalled by 44% of the respondents during the poll. In second place in popularity is Tatiana’s Letter to Onegin (42.1%), which is usually learned by heart at school, mainly by girls. The third most popular poem is “I remember a wonderful moment” (38.9%), addressed to Anna Kern. The ratings are closed by “Winter Morning” and “Monument” with the result of 34.7% and 30.5% of the votes, respectively.

The study also made it possible to find out which works of Pushkin are loved by Russians more than others.Out of competition was the novel in verse “Eugene Onegin” – 69%. It is followed by “The Captain’s Daughter” (52.6%), “The Tale of Tsar Saltan” (41.1%), “The Queen of Spades” (40%) and “The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish” (38.9%) …

Accordingly, the favorite Pushkin hero among Russians is Eugene Onegin. Almost 40% of the respondents voted for him. Tatyana Larina received 31.5% of the vote, Petr Grinev – 30.54%.

On the birthday of Pushkin, the International Day of the Russian Language, established by the UN in 2010, is also celebrated.Since 2011, it has been a public holiday in Russia. Earlier, VTsIOM found out that more than half of Russians advocate the purity of the Russian language, while 45% use borrowed words. The study found that 67% of Russians believe that it is necessary to use Russian words and enter their own terms. 23% of the respondents disagree with them. In their opinion, it is necessary to borrow foreign words that are actively used all over the world (23%).

The use of foreign words in ordinary and business communication is more likely to pose a threat to the development and preservation of the Russian language, 54% of Russians told VTsIOM specialists.30% of respondents from Moscow and St. Petersburg (47%), as well as from cities with a population of over one million and cities with 500-950 thousand inhabitants (36-35%) see this as an opportunity for enriching speech.

Despite the possible threat to the purity of the Russian language, more than half of Russians calmly react to the abuse of foreign terms in speech.

A quarter of Russians (24%) reported using various outdated words and phrases. The most popular among them are: madam, sudarushka (9%), until (3%), sir (3%), young lady (2%).64% of our compatriots never use outdated forms of Russian words.

“Sail”, analysis of Lermontov’s poem

The famous poem “Sail” was written in 1832 in St. Petersburg. 17-year-old Lermontov created it during one of the walks along the coast of the Gulf of Finland. In the original version, the first line read: “The distant sail is whitening.” The final version of this line was borrowed from the poem “Andrey, Prince of Pereyaslavsky” by AA Bestuzhev-Marlinsky.

The poem reflects the personal experiences of the young man. Shortly before that, he left Moscow University, abandoning his dream of becoming a philologist. At the insistence of his beloved grandmother, Lermontov moved to St. Petersburg, intending to enter a cadet school. Before admission, the young man thought a lot about his past and possible future destiny – these thoughts and feelings formed the basis of the work.

The poem of the young poet is distinguished not only by its vivid imagery, melody and poetic beauty, but also by the depth of emotions and feelings reflected in it, an amazing maturity of thought.

Compositionally, the poem consists of three stanzas. Composition clearly separates the sail and the lyrical hero: in each stanza, the first two lines depict a changing seascape, and the next two lines reflect the inner state and feelings of the lyrical hero watching the sail. Lermontov uses ellipsis to separate the description of nature and lines dedicated to the psychological state of the hero.

The images of the poem are allegorical. To denote life, the poet used the traditional image of the sea , symbolizing the vicissitudes of life, and the sail is a symbol of the person himself, his soul.The conflict “sail – sea” turns into a conflict “man – life”. A person thrown into the sea of ​​life is infinitely lonely among the same people floundering in it.

In “Parus” the author’s “I” is hidden, but it is easy to guess it behind the pronoun “he”: unlike the word “sail”, used only in the first line, it occurs six times in the text.

In the first stanza, the images of the sail and the lyrical hero are united by the word “loneliness”. The loneliness of the hero is caused by disappointment in life, the bitterness of some loss; he asks a painful question: how to achieve inner harmony.

In the second stanza, the hero seeks salvation from loneliness in the struggle with the elements, but, “alas,” meeting with the storm does not bring happiness – happiness cannot be found from the outside, it is contained within a person.

In the third stanza, contrary to the pacified, harmonious picture of the world, the hero seeks to find peace of mind in the renewal of life, in a cleansing storm.

Along with the motive of loneliness , Lermontov raises in “Parus” a theme that is invariably of interest to him – the problem of the goal and meaning of human existence .

“Sail”, being a lyrical novel in genre , refers to landscape-symbolic poems and has a deep philosophical meaning. The landscape in the work reflects the inner world of the poet.

The poem was written in iambic tetrameter using a cross rhyme (the first and third lines of each stanza end with a feminine rhyme, for the second and fourth lines a masculine rhyme is used).

To enhance artistic expression, Lermontov uses repetitions in Parus, including anaphora ( what he is looking for, what he threw ), syntactic parallelism, inversion ( sail to a lonely, distant country, in the fog of the blue sea ).The poet makes extensive use of personifications ( the wind whistles, waves play), metaphors ( a jet lighter than azure ), epithets ( golden ray of the sun ). Saturation with verbs gives dynamism to the poem. To convey the contrast on which the composition of the poem is built, Lermontov resorts to the antithesis ( to a distant country – his native land, he threw – he is looking for ).

To depict the changing picture of the seascape, the poet uses onomatopoeia: in the first stanza, with the help of the predominance of the sounds “l”, “n”, “m”, “r”, the effect of a measured swaying of waves is created during calm; the change in the sea (the sound of waves and the whistle of the wind) is transmitted by the prevalence of the sounds “s”, “t”, “u”, “h”.
