Haley Anderson was an incredible woman from Long Island, New York. People remembered her for her enchanting smile and warm heart.
Haley was a talented, hardworking, and passionate person who was always there for her loved ones. She had this fun, caring attitude that instantly helped people connect with her.
Many saw her as nothing less than a bundle of joy.
In 2018, Haley was pursuing her nursing degree from Binghamton University, New York. She was a fifth-year senior who was all set to achieve her dreams.
She even had a job lined up for her before graduating.
Haley’s long-term dream was to move to California, buy a hippie van, and travel the country as a travel nurse. She was that carefree soul.
But then, she was brutally murdered.
At university, Haley met fellow nursing student Kevin Ocampo. The two had an instant connection and started dating.
In 2016, Kevin threw a party at his place, and Haley attended it. At the party, she met another nursing student, Orlando Tercero. Haley and Orlando had taken a few classes together but never got close until that evening.
Haley and Orlando had similar personalities. Both worked super hard during the week and partied on the weekends. Both loved meeting new people and making new friends. They were usually the life of the party, and the two got along well.
Kevin and Orlando were also quite close. Kevin was starting a fraternity, and he recruited Orlando. They were the only two Hispanics who could speak Spanish in that group, bringing them closer.
Now, Haley and Kevin had an on-and-off relationship. So, when they were on a break, Haley hooked up with Orlando. But she clarified that she didn’t want a serious, exclusive relationship. She only wanted a casual fling.
And Orlando was okay with that. At least, that was what he said.
Turning into something he wasn’t
Soon, Kevin’s frat members learned about Haley and Orlando’s affair. While they tried to talk Orlando out of this relationship, he paid no heed. At one point, Haley herself told him she didn’t want to continue the relationship, but Orlando wasn’t ready to let her go.
He was possessive of Haley and couldn’t take no for an answer.
After the breakup, Orlando often went to Haley’s place uninvited. He would sit on the porch and smoke a cigarette while waiting for her. He also drove by Haley’s house at odd times and stalked her constantly.
Orlando was becoming a creep, and things were getting scary for Haley.
In September 2017, Orlando threw a party, and he invited Haley.
By then, Haley had patched up with Kevin, and the two went together.
Seeing Haley with Kevin infuriated Orlando. He couldn’t accept the fact that Haley had chosen Kevin over him.
Orlando confronted Haley, and it turned into a bitter argument. There was a lot of yelling, and everyone felt uncomfortable.
Later, Orlando tried to smooth things down by playing music, pouring more shots, and having fun. But he was already pretty drunk at that point, and he started puking. So, he had to leave the place.
After the party, Kevin returned to Haley’s place, spending the night there. The following morning, when the two walked out of Haley’s house, they noticed someone had slashed Haley’s car tires.
Kevin accused Orlando, but Orlando denied involvement. The police estimated the damage to be over $600, making it a felony.
However, Haley realized that if the police caught Orlando, he would be kicked out of university and even be deported to Nicaragua. Being the empathetic and kind person she was, Haley he didn’t want to destroy a young man’s life.
So, she decided not to press charges.
Haley saw Orlando as a good friend, and she wanted to value the friendship they had.
Alas, little did she know that that would be the gravest mistake she would ever make.
On March 7th, 2018, Haley and her roommates spent the evening playing games, drinking wine, and having fun. There was a lot of laughter, dancing, and happiness in the air.
At around 1 am, the girls called it a night and went to bed.
Josie and Michaela, Haley’s roommates, woke up the following morning and noticed Haley’s bedroom door closed. They assumed she was sleeping in or had gone out with some other friends. They thought little of it.
However, they grew nervous when they heard nothing from Haley throughout the day. Haley would always reply or be there for them. So, they tried to track Haley’s smartphone.
And learned that she was in Orlando’s place.
Now, Haley’s friends were relieved. They believed she probably didn’t reply to their messages because she was embarrassed that she had hooked up with Orlando again.
She might have felt that they would judge her for her actions.
Of course, that wasn’t the story, and it would take them a while to realize that.
Days later, Orlando’s sister was worried that she hadn’t heard from her brother. Orlando spoke to her almost daily, or he would at least message her if he couldn’t talk.
So, she requested the police to do a welfare check on Orlando. But the police noticed his car wasn’t there. They also knocked on the door, and no one answered. So, they assumed that he had probably skipped town for a while.
At this point, Haley’s friends do not know about Orlando’s disappearance. They still believed Haley was with Orlando at his place.
Eventually, after not hearing from Haley at all, her roommates went to Orlando’s place. They wanted to check on their friend and take her home.
And that was when they noticed Orlando’s car missing.
The girls knocked on doors and windows to see if anyone was home. After all, Haley’s phone was still there.
But when they got no response, they broke into the house through a window.
Inside the house, a horrific scene made them stop in their tracks.
The two women saw Haley lying on Orlando’s bed, naked and pale. There was no blood, struggle, broken objects, etc. The house was calm, giving a vibe of impending doom.
Haley’s friends called 911, and the police arrived shortly.
It turned out that Haley had bruises all over her body. Her autopsy confirmed that she was strangled to death when she was asleep.
The poor woman didn’t even put up a fight.
The building’s CCTV camera helped the police put together some pieces of the puzzle.
- At 3:14 am, Haley and Orlando entered the building. Haley seemed to be happy and willing to be with him.
- About seven hours later, Orlando left the building. He threw the trash and drove away in a hurry.
- Then he came back and spent some time inside the house. He was also in the basement, making some arrangements.
- A few hours later, he left with his luggage.
The police then continued their investigation and found:
- A receipt for sleeping pills from a local drugstore. The police assume these pills were used on Haley.
- A suicide note from Orlando written in Spanish. In the letter, he apologized for doing something stupid. He also claimed to meet his father soon, who had passed away a few years ago.
- In the basement, there was a tie, repurposed as a noose. There were also some drops of blood on the floor. The police figured that Orlando had tried to take his life, but he fell and hurt himself.
- Orlando had called his sister and told her he was a disgrace to the family and that he was moving back to Nicaragua.

Soon, Haley’s murder was national news, and everyone was furious that the murderer had escaped the country.
Orlando in Nicaragua
In Nicaragua, Orlando’s mother picked him up from the airport and took him to a small town where they lived. But, the town lacked proper medical care.
So, Orlando had to go to a hospital in Leon, about an hour and a half away from his town.
At the hospital, someone recognized him and informed the police. He was arrested soon after.
But then, things got tricky: Orlando had dual citizenship from the USA and Nicaragua. Since he was a Nicaraguan citizen, the officers weren’t obligated to extradite him to America.
So, they held him there.
After negotiations for over a year, the US and the Nicaraguan officials agreed that the trial would take place in Nicaragua, and the witnesses from the US could testify via teleconferencing. They would hold the trial according to Nicaraguan law, with a Nicaraguan judge, Nicaraguan lawyers, and no jury.
Basically, the US officials had no say in the matter, even though the crime took place on American soil.
But they did everything they could to gather witnesses, testimonies, and evidence to present a compelling case.
Orlando’s trial began on October 1st, 2019.
Haley’s mother, Karen Anderson, testified against Orlando. She explained how empathetic and kind Haley was and how Orlando had taken everything from her family.
But the sad part was that whenever Haley’s mother saw Orlando, he would smirk like he didn’t care at all. It broke the woman to see the man responsible for her daughter’s death smiling and having a good time.
After that, Haley’s friend, Kevin, the pathologist who performed the autopsy, everyone came forward and testified against Orlando. The police also presented the suicide note, noose, and other pieces of evidence they had collected from his house.
They presented a solid case.
Defense
The defense claimed that Orlando had drunk too much that night and was mentally unstable. They argued that he shouldn’t be punished for his actions in such a state.
The defense also presented a clinical psychologist who supported their claims.
However, the prosecution squashed their claims citing insufficient evidence to support their theory. There was no history of mental disorder, no wine glasses, bottles, or no receipts to prove their statements.
Judgment
After the closing arguments, the judge took about 90 minutes to come to a judgment — Orlando was guilty of killing Haley.
Orlando couldn’t accept that Haley had a mind of her own and that she was in control of her body, life, and personal decisions. The judge claimed she would not tolerate men trying to exert themselves into women’s lives without their consent.
Orlando was given the maximum sentence for his crimes — 30 years in prison.
Orlando tried to appeal the judgment, but it was denied. He is currently serving his sentence in Nicaragua.
Haley’s case brought attention to Femicide, the felony charge against Orlando. Currently, the US justice system has no laws related to Femicide.
Haley’s mother hopes that her daughter’s death will shed light on the seriousness of the crime and the importance of such laws.
According to a UN report, one woman is killed by her family every 11 minutes. And women who say ‘no,’ often face dire consequences, with death being one of the primary outcomes.
Haley Anderson, Heidi Firkus, Stephanie Parze, Janett Reyna, Lauren Cho, Miya Marcano, Molly Watson, Cati Blauvelt, Kathleen Moore, Makayla Young, Anni Dewani, Louis Ellis; the list grows longer, and the stories get heavier.
But the worst part: they are mostly forgotten, and their stories get overlooked.

In the end, it’s clear that Orlando tried to escape the consequences of his actions by fleeing to another country, but he ended up with a much harsher punishment.
