Representatives of manufacturing companies: Amazone, Kverneland, Pöttinger, Rostselmash, Lemken, Horsch and Kuhn told Agrotekhnika i Tekhnologii about typical mistakes in the selection, operation and adjustment of various types of disc harrows
A universal tool designed for basic and pre-sowing tillage – a disc harrow – is quite widespread among farmers working on various tillage technologies (except for no-till).
When choosing a disc harrow, first of all, it is necessary to understand for what purposes it will be used. As the general director of the Russian representative office of Lemken (Lemken-Rus) Alexander Ladygin explains, disc harrows are used in three versions. The first is shallow processing: post-grain or pre-sowing processing to a depth of up to 6 cm. The second (medium-deep processing) is mixing, chopping and cutting the average amount of plant mass and weeds to a depth of 7 to 15 cm. And the third is deep disking – mixing, chopping and cutting large amounts of plant matter and weeds to a depth of 7 to 20 cm.
For all these types of processing, the corresponding types of tools are used, which differ from each other in a number of parameters: the diameter of the disk, its shape, the type of attachment to the supporting frame and their type of location.
Light disc harrows are otherwise called cultivators, they are light in weight and have a small disc diameter and work to a depth of up to 7 cm. plows can be deepened by 12-16 cm and have discs of large diameter, Vasily Lebed, product manager of the tillage direction of the Kun-Vostok company, compares.
In his opinion, it is not necessary to take a heavy disc tool to stubble after grain crops – a light harrow can do it, but a heavier machine is required to disc large-stemmed predecessors, such as corn and sunflower. However, the choice of a suitable machine is always a struggle of compromises, the expert argues. For example, if it starts to rain after the corn harvest (which is often the case), a heavy disc harrow will not be able to cope: in wet conditions, it will quickly clog. Therefore, it is better to choose a lighter unit and make an additional pass across the field, saving time, but increasing fuel consumption, advises Vasily Lebed.
The most versatile disc implements that can be used both in summer and autumn (planting residues) and in spring (sowing preparation) field work are short two-row disc harrows, says Vyacheslav Veklenko, regional representative for the Southern Federal District of Horsch.
Not so versatile?
According to Ilya Tsarkov, Amazone’s regional representative for Central Russia, the use of disc harrows is more justified in the case of incorporating crop residues into the soil after a combine harvester than in spring pre-sowing preparation.
Vasily Lebed also believes that a pre-sowing cultivator prepares the soil better for sowing in spring. The main purpose of disc harrows is to turn crop residues after harvesting with a combine into organic fertilizer: grind them, mix them in the topsoil and start the decomposition process, the specialist says. And leveling the soil and creating a seed bed with discs is impossible, since the rocking of the discs in the direction of the tractor movement creates an uneven basis for sowing. However, the use of disc harrows for seedbed preparation is possible in compromise cases, when the farm did not have time to prepare the soil and it is overgrown with a tall weed that clogs the classic cultivator, the Kun-Vostok specialist believes.
Vyacheslav Veklenko expresses a compromise point of view. In his opinion, the limited use of disc harrows for pre-sowing cultivation is explained not by the mechanics of the machine itself, but by the technological requirements of crop cultivation. The first task of pre-sowing treatment is the creation of a leveled and evenly compacted seedbed with a finely cloddy soil structure in the seeding horizon. For better leveling (e.g. ploughing), you can use accessories (leveling discs). The second task is the mechanical destruction of existing weeds and the prevention of their further emergence. And in most cases, modern two-row disc harrows (always with a roller or a system of rollers) do an excellent job with it.
Sugar beet stands apart, as this culture dictates very high requirements for the quality of pre-sowing treatment. And in this case, the advantage is traditionally given to multi-row seedbed cultivators with a roller system.
But for winter and spring cereals, the disk harrow can be used as a pre-sowing tool, the Horsch specialist has no doubts. In addition, today, most modern universal seed drills are already equipped with integrated disc harrows from the factory, which allows them to prepare the soil and sow in one pass.
Seedbed roller
When using disc harrows for seedbed preparation, it is important to choose the right packer when buying them, which will allow you to create a slight reconsolidation of the soil. In this way, we will be able to level the surface, give it the desired structure and close the moisture, explains Ilya Tsarkov from Amazone.
For seedbed preparation, he recommends choosing a tandem roller (a combination of tubular and ribbed and slatted surface). Such devices, he says, do a good job with the above tasks of leveling, structuring and creating a small reconsolidation.
Tandem rollers are especially good on black soil, Dmitry Muratov, director of regional development at Pöttinger, supports his colleague. Rubber compacting rollers perform well or a less expensive option – segmented cone. The sticky and moist consistency of such soils clogs less and “winds” on rollers of a similar structure.
It is also possible to use universal wedge-shaped rollers for seedbed preparation, continues Ilya Tsarkov. They are also more suitable for heavy soils. On medium and light soils, it is not recommended to use them for seedbed preparation (there will be overconsolidation).
When choosing a skating rink, one should be guided by the working conditions, Vasily Lebed notes. A metal roller with a powerful battery of scrapers will be good for wet conditions. When the soil is ripe, the rubber roller performs well. At the same time, if the soil is too dry and aggressive, the rubber roller can quickly collapse on sharp clods, while the metal one will work perfectly.
If disc harrows are used for seedbed preparation, the machine must be set up in such a way that the cultivation is continuous, recalls Ilya Tsarkov. And the depth of processing should be approximately equal to the depth of seed placement.
Ideally, the depth should be about 1 cm less than the seeding depth, so that the seedbed is dense and the soil capillaries at this depth are not broken, adds Vyacheslav Veklenko. Therefore, the diameter of the discs must be chosen taking into account the working depth and the harrow should be adjusted accordingly, the specialist advises.
Diameter and shape
As Vasily Lebed explains, small-diameter discs have a higher angular speed of rotation and cut better, that is, their grinding ability is higher than that of large-diameter discs. Therefore, they are good for stubble cultivation. If the field has a large amount of crop residue and is wet, it is important to pay attention not only to the diameter of the disc, but also to the distance from the edge of the disc to the frame. The greater this distance, the easier it is for plant residues and soil to pass further.
The distance between the rows of discs is also important: the farther they are from each other, the better the machine plans the field, and this has a good effect on the resistance of the disc harrow to clogging.
For farms whose fields have a lot of plant residues (for example, after corn), it would be a huge mistake to save on the purchase of a disc implement with a small disc diameter, Alexander Ladygin believes. Conversely, it makes no sense to take a machine with a large disc if we are going to till the soil after grain crops. He also draws attention to universal tools with a medium disc diameter. According to Alexander Ladygin, they are suitable in most cases where the main crops of the crop rotation are cereals, vegetables, root crops or low-stemmed industrial crops with an average or above average yield.
In addition to the diameter, you should also carefully consider the shape of the cutout of the disks themselves. As Aleksey Shtern, product manager for tillage equipment at Kverneland Group CIS, explains, the cutout of the discs is selected depending on the type of soil where the implement will work. So, discs with a large cutout shape (with a large “chamomile”) go well to greater depths and mix the soil more aggressively, fine crop residues, but this creates a coarse soil structure that is not very well leveled, Stern explains. It is good to use such disks for cutting sod during the main tillage.
Accordingly, the smaller the shape of the cut, the smaller the depth of processing. Therefore, for pre-sowing cultivation, discs with smaller cuts are chosen so that the soil has a finely cloddy structure and a flat surface, says Vyacheslav Veklenko.
Much depends on the soil itself, Vasily Lebed draws attention. So, to work with smooth discs (without cutouts), you need a dense surface, and if the soil is light or wet, then the density is not enough – the discs will “hang”, and the same disc, but even with small cutouts, will be guaranteed to cling to the soil and spin nicely.
For example, if there is a lot of rain during stubble incorporation and the base of the field is soft, then smooth discs are not the best option, however, as well as discs with small cutouts, says Vasily Lebed. Or if, after harvesting sunflower and corn, you have to disc the stubble after rains, then it is better to take discs with a large “chamomile”. And if you have to work on wheat stubble in arid conditions (for example, the north of the Rostov region always has dry weather after harvest), the best choice is discs with small cutouts.
According to the representative of the Rostselmash company, it is possible to work with combined tools that have cut-out disks on the front row of the battery and smooth ones at the back.
Oil oil
One of the mistakes when choosing a disc tool Alexander Ladygin considers the preference for unnecessary combinations, for example, a combination of discs and cultivator shares in one machine. The disco-paw weapon already sounds like “butter oil”, and if you delve into the details, you will get an irrational use of resources, the director of Lemken-Rus is convinced.
According to him, a properly selected disc harrow perfectly mixes a large amount of plant residues and cuts weeds to a given, maximum depth for the selected model at a speed of 12 to 16 km/h. A good three-bar tine cultivator also copes with intensive mixing, but works at a maximum speed of 11-12 km / h, as the wear of the working elements increases with an increase in speed.
It would seem that with a combination of disks and cultivator paws, the economy has only advantages: in the aggregate, the combined tool can both grind and mix plant residues, and carry out deep loosening to a sufficient depth, Alexander Ladygin argues. However, he warns, this approach has a significant drawback, which is the difference in the working speeds of the discs and cultivator shares. As a result, performing two operations in one pass, the agrarian does not receive high-quality tillage, has excessive fuel consumption, in addition, this increases the wear of the working bodies of that part of the unit, which in principle should move slowly.
But most importantly, the cost of purchasing a combined unit is 70% higher than a separate machine, Alexander Ladygin calculates. In his opinion, it is necessary to compare the pros and cons before purchasing such machines and not pay more where there is no need for it.
Posts and corners
Alexander Ladygin also draws attention to the fact that when choosing a disk implement, you need to look at the method of attaching the disk racks to the frame. According to him, it is undesirable that rubber elements of shock absorption and protection are not used for them, since rubber tends to dry out and lose elasticity.
If you purchased a unit of this type, then be prepared for the constant replacement of rubber dampers, Ladygin warns. In addition, on disk harrows with rubber dampers, as their elasticity is lost or soil density changes, it is necessary to center the location of the front row of disks relative to the back row by eye. If this is not done, then there can be no talk of any quality of tillage. However, such adjustments are not always made when working in the field, the specialist regrets.
The ideal option, in his opinion, would be a rigid mounting of the disc rack to the frame with a spring mechanism for shock absorption and protection. He also reminds that we should not forget about the angle of attack of the working discs, where the best performance indicators are achieved at 16 degrees of the front row of discs and 14 degrees of the rear row of discs. The cutting angle of the disks is also very important, comments Ladygin, because the throughput of the unit and penetration into the soil depend on it, regardless of its hardness and the amount of plant residues. Twenty degrees, according to the director of Lemken-Rus, is the reference cutting angle, and all other indicators are half measures.
According to a representative of the Rostselmash company, it is better to choose a machine with fixed angles of attack: units with angle settings and a complex design are more prone to breakdowns. And now most manufacturers produce designs with an optimal angle of attack.

Vyacheslav Veklenko points out that when buying, preference should be given to maintenance-free bearing assemblies on discs and rollers. In a machine with a working width, for example, 8 m, there are about 50 such nodes (sometimes more), and their maintenance is often a laborious process that takes a lot of time. This is especially unacceptable during spring field work, because spring is always a time pressure, the specialist reminds.

Setting errors
As Alexander Ladygin notes, a properly selected disc harrow does not need any settings (except for setting the working depth and leveling the horizon with a tractor hitch or a hydraulic drawbar of the implement itself).
At the same time, the Rostselmash company notes that one of the characteristic errors in the operation of disc harrows, especially two-row ones, is the uneven penetration of the working bodies of the machine. Namely, the excessive deepening of the front row of the disk battery.
According to Vasily Lebed’s observations, many agronomists insist on such an adjustment, arguing that the front row of discs works with a denser soil layer than the rear row.
However, if you set up the disc harrow in this way (the front row is lower), then, given that the front discs already work in denser soil, it turns out that the machine will “steer” at an angle to the line of motion either to the right or to the left, depending on the direction in which the front row of discs is directed, explains Vyacheslav Veklenko.
In addition, the frame itself suffers, as well as the bearings on the front row of the disk battery, which fail faster, adds a representative of the Rostselmash company. And the rapid and frequent failure of the bearings in the first row of the battery suggests that it was too heavily and unevenly deepened relative to the back row and took on the entire load.
Here, rather, the opposite is recommended: to slightly grind the front row of discs in order to equalize the resistance of the soil to cultivation for the front and rear row of discs, which goes along the already “opened” layer, Vyacheslav Veklenko argues. But what should be the difference in the depth of travel of disk batteries cannot be rigidly determined in a “table way”, this is just the case for fine adjustment in the field.
Operating errors
A disc harrow is a tool with which you can do anything in the field, except for turning on the spot in a recessed position, says Alexander Ladygin.
Alas, such a mistake in the pursuit of production occurs in 30-40% of machine operators, notes Alexey Stern. As a result, wear of implements and bearings, failure of the roller, increased load on the frame. And this is only part of the consequences of such a maneuver.
In addition, the speed limit must not be exceeded, since the load on the frame structure and all nodes increases sharply. But it makes no sense to drive at speeds below 12 km / h, Alexander Ladygin notes.
The advantage of disc harrows, including short ones, is their speed, explains Vyacheslav Veklenko. Only at high speed discs of small and medium diameter rotate in such a way that they create the desired agronomic soil structure – 70% of clods from 1 to 3 mm in diameter. If the disks begin to rotate at a lower speed, the quality of processing will be worse – the number of small lumps will decrease.
As for the operation of the tractor, as a rule, it slows down and does not allow it to develop the desired speed due to an incorrectly selected width of the implement, notes Dmitry Muratov.
Here, either you need to choose a smaller disc harrow, or a more powerful tractor, Ladygin argues, adding that it is better to select a machine with a power reserve.

What is the performance of modern disc harrows, what purpose do they have, what are the advantages and disadvantages of the models that are currently used in the agricultural industry?
Purpose and application of the disc harrow
Disc harrows are one of the varieties of disc harrows that are equipped with an individual stand for each disc. To date, Belarusian disc harrows have been widely used in the agricultural industry, which allow you to surface the soil and destroy weeds without prior plowing. Aggregates are used in any agro-climatic zones, on all types of soil, including soil subject to water and wind erosion.
Purpose of disc harrows:
• Traditional, pre-sowing and minimum tillage without preliminary plowing;
• Tillage for any type of crops: technical, grain, fodder;
• Processing of small-contour land plots;
• Processing of land with complex terrain;
• Rejuvenation of grassy fields, pastures and meadows;
• Stubble cultivation, weed removal;
• Creation of a mulching layer preventing the soil from drying out.
The use of disc harrows in agricultural work allows you to reduce the time of tillage by 5 times due to the performance of several functions at once in one operation. These functions are:

The advantage of disc harrows compared to typical disc harrows is low dependence on climatic conditions and high productivity with fast tillage. The fundamental difference from disc harrows (LDG, BDT, etc.) lies in the fact that the disc is located on its own axis. The individual axle makes it possible to cultivate soil with a moisture content of up to 40%, eliminating the risk of large clods of earth clogging the interdisc space.
Performing many functions in one operation not only saves time, but also saves diesel fuel, the consumption of which does not exceed 10 liters per hectare. In fact, the purchase of a disc harrow pays off already in the second season, since the unit has a good performance (about 110 hectares per shift).
Types of disc harrows and their features
To date, several types of disc harrows are used in the agricultural industry, which differ in their advantages and disadvantages, functionality and operating rules. The classification of units also takes into account design features, in this regard, it is customary to single out:
• Traditional rigid tine disc harrows, eg PM;
• Disc harrows with individual tines with spring-damper protection;
• Units combined with disk and lancet working bodies.
Depending on the weight of the unit per meter of working width, the following disc harrows are distinguished:
• Light vehicles (I group). These include equipment for surface tillage (up to 10 cm) – mulchers, stubblers, etc. The total weight of such disc harrows does not exceed 800 kg per one meter of grip;
• Heavy machines (Group II). This category includes disc harrows, which use a double-helix or spring-loaded rack. These units are used for processing neglected fields (after sunflower or corn), during drought, etc.;
• Superheavy machines (group III). The total weight of such disc harrows reaches 1,300 kg per meter of grip. These units include disc plows, which optimally cultivate land with difficult terrain, soil subject to water erosion, as well as grassy fields.
Popular models of disc harrows used in domestic agriculture
Belarusian disc harrows for tillage have become widespread in the domestic agricultural market. These include the model of the semi-mounted disc harrow BDK-2.5, which is designed to destroy weeds, crush plant residues and deep loosen the soil. The model has received wide distribution for its high productivity – up to 3 ha / h and the speed of tillage, which reaches 12 km / h. The unit copes well with loosening the soil even under drought conditions.
Another disc harrow, which is used for tillage, is the BDK-3.5 model. This unit has improved technical characteristics in comparison with the BDK-2.5 model, on the basis of which it was developed. It is able to perform several functions in one operation – peeling, pre-sowing tillage, soil pulverization using a mulching roller. A distinctive feature of the unit is a rigid frame and the presence of discs (11 + 11 pieces).
