Understanding Hampton University’s Financial Aid Office
Hampton University’s Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships serves as a crucial resource for students seeking to offset the costs of higher education. This department offers guidance and clarity to families exploring various forms of financial assistance, including student loans and scholarships.
Key Services Provided by the Financial Aid Office
- Assistance with loan applications
- Scholarship information and guidance
- Financial aid package explanations
- Guidance on completing the FAFSA
The financial aid process can be complex, but Hampton University’s dedicated staff aims to simplify it for students and their families. They provide personalized support to ensure that each student understands their options and can make informed decisions about financing their education.
The Student Freedom Initiative: A Game-Changer for HBCU Students
For the 2022-2023 academic year, Hampton University joined eight other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in launching the Student Freedom Initiative. This non-profit program represents a significant step forward in providing financial and academic support to HBCU students.
Components of the Student Freedom Initiative
- Student Freedom Agreement: An income-contingent repayment plan for eligible juniors and seniors in STEM majors
- Tutoring and mentoring services
- Paid internship programs open to students of all majors
- Capacity-building support for participating schools
The Student Freedom Initiative aims to create a more equitable path to success for HBCU students. By offering alternative funding options and comprehensive support services, it addresses some of the unique challenges faced by students at these institutions.
Navigating PLUS Loan Applications and Denials
The Direct PLUS Loan program is an important funding source for many college students and their families. However, the application process can sometimes lead to denials due to adverse credit history. Hampton University provides guidance for applicants who find themselves in this situation.
Steps to Take After a PLUS Loan Denial
- Check for communication from the U.S. Department of Education
- Contact the Student Loan Support Center at 1-800-557-7394 for reconsideration
- Complete the reconsideration process promptly
It’s important to note that while the Financial Aid Office can provide information and guidance, they cannot guarantee approval of a reconsidered PLUS loan application. The final decision rests with the Department of Education based on the applicant’s credit history and other factors.
The Crucial Role of the FAFSA in Financial Aid
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a cornerstone of the financial aid process at Hampton University and institutions across the United States. Completing this form accurately and on time is essential for students seeking financial assistance.
Key FAFSA Information for Hampton University Students
- Priority filing date: February 15th
- Hampton University’s school code: 003714
- Applications received after July 1st are considered late
Filing the FAFSA by the priority date increases a student’s chances of receiving need-based Federal Student Aid. However, it’s important to understand that meeting this deadline does not guarantee additional aid, as funding is limited.
Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant: A Resource for Virginia Residents
For students who are legal residents of Virginia, the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG) provides an additional avenue for financial support. This program offers non-need-based grants to eligible students attending private, non-profit colleges and universities in Virginia.
VTAG Application Process
- Confirm Virginia domicile status
- Submit a separate VTAG application
- Meet application deadlines set by Hampton University
The VTAG can significantly reduce the cost of attendance for Virginia residents at Hampton University. Students should work closely with the Financial Aid Office to ensure they meet all requirements and deadlines for this valuable grant program.
Understanding Your Financial Aid Package
Once students have completed the necessary applications and met the required deadlines, Hampton University’s Financial Aid Office begins the process of issuing financial aid awards. Understanding the components of these awards is crucial for students and their families.
Timeline and Components of Financial Aid Awards
- Award issuance begins May 15th for qualifying students
- Awards may include a combination of grants, loans, and work-study opportunities
- PLUS Loan acceptance requires additional steps on HUNet and studentloans.gov
Students should carefully review their financial aid packages and communicate with the Financial Aid Office if they have any questions or concerns. It’s important to understand the terms and conditions of each type of aid offered.
Reporting Outside Aid: A Critical Responsibility
Federal Student Aid Guidelines require Hampton University to consider all forms of financial assistance when determining a student’s aid package. This includes aid from sources outside the university, making it essential for students to report all expected aid to the Financial Aid Office.
Types of Outside Aid to Report
- Scholarships from private organizations
- Tuition waivers or fee reductions
- Veteran educational benefits
- National Service Education Awards
- ROTC living allowances
Failure to report outside aid can have serious consequences, potentially leading to the reduction, retraction, or cancellation of a student’s financial aid award. This could result in an unexpected balance owed to the university.
Maximizing Your Financial Aid Opportunities at Hampton University
Navigating the financial aid landscape at Hampton University requires diligence, attention to detail, and proactive communication with the Financial Aid Office. By understanding the available resources and adhering to important deadlines, students can maximize their chances of securing the funding they need to pursue their educational goals.
Best Practices for Hampton University Students
- File the FAFSA early, ideally before the February 15th priority date
- Explore all potential sources of aid, including the Student Freedom Initiative and VTAG
- Stay informed about PLUS Loan application processes and potential reconsideration options
- Report all instances of outside aid promptly to the Financial Aid Office
- Regularly check university email for important communications regarding financial aid
By following these best practices and maintaining open lines of communication with the Financial Aid Office, students can navigate the complex world of college financing more effectively. Remember, the staff at Hampton University’s Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships are there to help you succeed in your educational journey.
Leveraging Technology in the Financial Aid Process
In today’s digital age, technology plays a crucial role in streamlining the financial aid process at Hampton University. Students are encouraged to utilize online platforms and tools to manage their financial aid applications and awards efficiently.

These digital tools not only simplify the application process but also provide students with real-time information about their financial aid status. By leveraging these resources, students can stay informed and take timely action on their financial aid matters.
The Impact of Academic Performance on Financial Aid
While financial need is a primary factor in determining aid eligibility, academic performance also plays a significant role in maintaining and potentially increasing financial assistance at Hampton University.
Academic Requirements for Financial Aid
- Maintaining satisfactory academic progress (SAP)
- Meeting GPA requirements for specific scholarships
- Completing a minimum number of credit hours each semester
Students should be aware that their academic performance can directly affect their financial aid eligibility. Consistently meeting or exceeding academic standards not only ensures continued aid but may also open doors to additional scholarship opportunities.
Planning for the Future: Financial Aid Beyond the First Year
As students progress through their academic careers at Hampton University, their financial aid needs and opportunities may evolve. It’s important to approach financial aid planning with a long-term perspective.
Considerations for Upperclassmen
- Re-evaluating financial needs each academic year
- Exploring major-specific scholarships and grants
- Investigating internship and work-study opportunities that align with career goals
By staying proactive and regularly reassessing their financial aid strategy, students can ensure they have the necessary resources to complete their degree programs successfully. The Financial Aid Office at Hampton University is equipped to assist students at every stage of their academic journey.

While Hampton University offers a wide range of financial aid options, students are also encouraged to explore external funding opportunities within their communities and beyond. These additional resources can help bridge funding gaps and reduce overall student debt.
Potential External Funding Sources
- Local and national civic organizations
- Industry-specific professional associations
- Corporate scholarship programs
- Faith-based organizations
- State-specific grant programs
By casting a wide net and exploring diverse funding sources, students can create a more robust financial aid package. The Financial Aid Office can provide guidance on how to effectively incorporate these external resources into their overall financial plan.

PLUS Loan Applicant Communication
Recently, the U.S. Department of Education sent emails or letters to certain Direct PLUS Loan applicants who have been denied a PLUS loan due to adverse credit history. The email or letter, which is in addition to the standard denial communication, is sent to applicants who could most likely be approved if they request reconsideration of the initial PLUS loan denial. If you have received this communication, you should contact the Student Loan Support Center at 1-800-557-7394 to request to request reconsideration. The applicant (not the Financial Aid Office or the child of the parent applicant) should contact Student Loan Support Center to request reconsideration as soon as possible. Generally, this process can be completed in just a few minutes. Please bear in mind that the Financial Aid Office cannot guarantee that your reconsideration request will result in an approval for the PLUS loan.

Financial Aid Application Process – Hampton University Financial Aid
Financial Aid recipients MUST apply for financial aid each year by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available each year after October 1st. In addition to completing a FAFSA, students must maintain other eligibility requirements including admittance, enrollment and satisfactory academic progress policy standards. Hampton University strongly advises all financial aid applicants to use available web resources to apply for aid, including the FAFSA on the Web at https:studentaid.gov/.
Step 1 – Obtain a PIN (https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account/launch)
(The PIN was retired to make way for the more modern and secure FSA ID.)
Step 2 – Obtain Necessary Documents
Step 3 – Complete FAFSA Online https:studentaid.gov/
Step 4 – Review Student Aid Report for Errors
Step 5 – Submit all Requested Documents promptly
Step 6 – Complete Entrance Interview & Master Promissory Notes
Step 1
Students will need a PIN number to electronically sign their FAFSA. Dependent student’s parents should also apply for a PIN. This will enable both the student and parent to sign the FAFSA each year electronically. Students and parents need to keep the PIN in a safe place so it can be used to sign the Master Promissory Notes and to complete the renewal FAFSA in subsequent years.
Step 2
It is helpful to gather the documents needed to complete the FAFSA ahead of time. You will need income tax returns (or estimated income amounts) as well as, banking and investment statements.
Step 3
Complete your FAFSA online as soon after October 1st as possible. HAMPTON UNIVERSITY’S PRIORITY FILING DATE IS FEBRUARY 15. Hampton University strongly recommends and prefers students and parents to complete the online FAFSA process. Hampton’s school code is 003714. Please be sure to print and keep all information regarding the processing of your FAFSA online. Students should NOT wait for an admissions decision before completing the FAFSA.
Step 4
Your SAR (Student Aid Report) is either mailed or emailed to the student from the Department of Education. The SAR shows the results of the FAFSA. If needed, the student can make corrections if needed online or by the paper method. If no corrections are needed, the student should keep the SAR for their records. The SAR lists the expected family contribution (EFC) number.
The EFC number is not a specific dollar amount you are expected to pay.
Step 5
If additional information is required to process the student’s financial aid eligibility, the student will be notified by mail.
Federal Verification Selection Process
FAFSAs are selected for verification either by the U.S. Department of Education’s Central Processing System (CPS) or by the school.
The CPS selects applicants either randomly or by choosing applications that do not meet a series of federal edits. These edits are not published by the Department of Education to the public.
The law also permits the school to select applicants based on the above reasons, as well as, to verify accuracy of data or resolve conflicting data that it believes is incorrect or discrepant. As important, a school may request additional documentation if information does not match FAFSA.
Notification of Selection
The CPS notifies students selected for verification by printing an asterisk (*) next to the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) on the SAR; also, the Financial Aid Office will notify selectees via correspondence of specific items required in order to process a student’s financial aid eligibility. In addition, students are required to monitor their financial status via their HUNET account.
To access your financial aid status within HUNet after logging in select Financial Aid, then Eligibility, then Student Requirements. Select the current aid year from the drop down menu, and then click Submit. The forms required for this process are available from the financial aid website (/studentservices/financialaid/fa_forms.cfm).
The student is given 14 days to respond to this request for information. Failure to respond within this time period could have an adverse effect (in some cases) depending on the student’s eligibility for certain types of financial aid awards.
What You Need to Know
In an effort to save you time with the processing of your verification documents, we like to recommend some important Tidbits:
- Respond timely to requests for information;
- Make certain that documents and appropriate worksheets are properly signed;
- Electronic signatures authorizations for tax returns are not allowed;
- Read your SAR thoroughly;
- If you have filed for an extension with the IRS, you will need to provide us with a copy of Form 4506-T;
- If an extension is granted by the IRS, you will need to submit IRS Form 4868 or a copy of the IRS approval or extension beyond the automatic six-month extension;
- Copies of tax returns or alternative documentation must be submitted within the appropriate deadlines established by the Financial Aid Office;
- If documentation is not received, students are ineligible for Title-IV funds and are required to repay any disbursed aid; and
- In some cases, students could be selected for verification after awarding and disbursements. Should this occur, the student is responsible for any overpayment (for certain Title-IV programs) received as a result of verification.
Completing Verification
Once we have received and reviewed for accuracy all the requested items for the verification process, the student will receive notification that his/her award package is available to view and/or accept online. This will include the types and amounts of aid offered and instructions for acceptance.
If a student has not received any correspondence from our office within 14 business days from the receipt date of all requirements satisfied (as displayed on HUNet), please do not hesitate to contact our office at 1-800-624-3341.
We strongly recommend that you do not attempt to change data on the FAFSA, while your documentation is under review, without first contacting our office.
Please direct all questions and inquiries to your assigned Financial Aid Advisor, as posted on the Financial Aid Office website.
All Verification Documents must be mailed or hand delivered to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.

Once all information is received by our office, the student will receive notification that his/her award package is available to view and/or accept. Baron of Hampton and Siberia: the British queen titled the son of Russian businessman Lebedev
- Society
- org/Person”>
Sergey Mingazov
Editorial Forbes
Evgeny Lebedev, son of former Forbes list member Alexander Lebedev, received the title of Baron of Hampton and Siberia from Queen Elizabeth II and became a life peer. The owner of The Evening Standard and The Independent entered the upper house of the British Parliament The government newspaper The Gazette reported. As a baron, Lebedev Jr. became a life peer and entered the House of Lords of the British Parliament.
A statement from the Royal Office, published by the newspaper, states that the Queen has conferred “a lifelong title of Baron of the United Kingdom to Yevgeny Aleksandrovich Lebedev under the name of Baron Lebedev of Hampton in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and Siberia in the Russian Federation.” Why the banker Lebedev spent $100 million on English newspapers title of a peer, became known in early August. The inclusion of the name of a businessman of Russian origin in the list was unexpected, The Guardian wrote at the time. The publication recalled that in 2018 Lebedev held a party with the participation of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, when he was still foreign minister.
“The Chekists ruined me”: Alexander Lebedev about the war with banksters and the launch of the Russian Tesla , who served in the KGB in the past, notes The Guardian. Alexander Lebedev previously told Forbes that Johnson and his son have been friends for about 12 years, in particular, they raised funds together to help homeless former British soldiers.
Ex-banker Lebedev commented on an article about a meeting with Johnson shortly after the Skripal poisoning
Until 2015, Lebedev Sr. was on the list of the richest people in Russia. In 2009, Lebedev bought the Evening Standard, and a year later, The Independent. Both newspapers were unprofitable, so their acquisition was inexpensive. Lebedev paid £8.3 million for the Evening Standard, and only a symbolic £1 for The Independent. After the deal, Lebedev became the first owner of a major British newspaper among Russians.
The son of businessman Alexander Lebedev can get a seat in the House of Lords
In addition to Evgeny Lebedev, there are 35 more people on the list of people who have received the right to a seat in the British House of Lords. Among them are the Prime Minister’s brother Joe Johnson, who previously left the country’s government due to disagreement with the views of Boris Johnson on Brexit, as well as former finance ministers Philip Hammond and Ken Clark, and former Prime Minister Theresa May’s husband Philip.
