“Khovanshchina”: How history comes to life on the stage of MAMT
The grand production returns to the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Musical Theater after several years of break.
October 5 and 6 at the Musical Theater named after Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko – a loud return of the opera “Khovanshchina”. She, like Aida, which opened the new theatrical season, was temporarily removed from the repertoire when the coronavirus pandemic broke out – it was too risky to bring dozens of people on stage at the same time.
« In addition to the traditional orchestra, we have an orchestra of national Armenian and even Iranian instruments, there is a backstage brass band, a full choir and an invited choir, there is a ballet troupe, soloists … At the end of the performance, there is not even enough space for bows “, – spoke about the scale of the production of the artistic director of the MAMT opera troupe and the director of “Khovanshchina” Alexander Titel.
By the originality of the music and its plot, Khovanshchina can be considered the most Russian opera. Modest Mussorgsky, who conceived it, defined the production as a folk musical drama, the action of which takes place against the backdrop of grandiose events – from the Streltsy revolt of 1682 to the final approval of Peter I in power.
Historical sketches depict both real and fictional characters by the composer – princes Ivan Khovansky (Honored Artist of the Russian Federation Dmitry Ulyanov), Andrei Khovansky (laureate of the international competition Nikolai Erokhin), Vasily Golitsyn (Honored Artist of the Russian Federation Valery Mikitsky), the leader of the dissenters Dosifey ( soloist Igor Korostylev).
« Traditionally, Dositheus is portrayed as an old man. I always wanted to show myself more hardened and age. The difficulty was to find it in yourself, based on your age and experience, and not portray the character of this character ,” said the young soloist Igor Korostylev to KinoReporter.
But the main character, despite the abundance of actors, can still be called “ill-fated Rus’ the sufferer.”
Mussorgsky began composing his grandiose historical collage in 1872, precisely at a time when interest in Russian history was especially great. Russia was torn apart by disputes about the choice of its path, about the old and new faith, and other spiritual matters. But the composer did not manage to bring his author’s intention to the end.
Rimsky-Korsakov recognized the greatness of the unfinished work after Mussorgsky’s death. He orchestrated the composition, finished writing the final scene and ligaments. Thanks to this, “Khovanshchina” shone on the Russian and European stages. Although there were those who criticized Rimsky-Korsakov for distorting the original idea. It was with this version that Fyodor Chaliapin and Igor Stravinsky worked (he also remade the final scene at his discretion).
In 1958, “Khovanshchina” found a new incarnation: Dmitry Shostakovich created his own version of the orchestration, which formed the basis of the film-opera of the same name. It was she who was preferred at MAMT, since she is closer to Mussorgsky’s original vision – gloomy, full of hysterical existential horror. However, this time it was not without musical edits either: the accompaniment to the final scene was written by our contemporary composer Vladimir Kobekin. Conductor Alexander Lazarev became the musical director of the renewed production.
Set design is in charge of Vladimir Arefiev, whose father and grandfather also served in MAMT. KinoReporter managed to evaluate his work even at a chamber rehearsal, which took place in the Small Hall. The actors who played joint episodes without stage costumes changed as soon as they began to sing, and a couple of details of the props were enough to complete the scale of the offices, palace halls and squares in their imagination. What can we expect from the premiere itself, resplendent in royal attire and thundering with several orchestras at once? Only the very best.
