How to grip the ball for an effective offspin delivery. What are the key steps to perfect your offspin bowling technique. How can you improve your spin and control when bowling offspin.
Understanding the Fundamentals of Offspin Bowling
Offspin bowling is a crucial skill in cricket that requires precision, technique, and practice. It involves imparting spin on the ball to make it deviate from its straight path after bouncing, potentially deceiving the batsman. The Google ball trick, as it’s colloquially known, refers to the specific grip and release technique used by offspin bowlers to achieve this effect.
To master offspin bowling, it’s essential to understand the basic principles behind the spin. When an offspin bowler releases the ball, they aim to rotate it from right to left (for a right-handed bowler) or left to right (for a left-handed bowler). This rotation, combined with the seam position and release angle, determines the amount and direction of spin the ball will have after pitching.
The Science Behind Offspin
The physics of offspin bowling involves the Magnus effect, which creates a sideways force on a spinning ball moving through the air. This effect, combined with the seam position, influences the ball’s trajectory and behavior upon pitching. Understanding these principles can help bowlers refine their technique and achieve more consistent results.
Perfecting the Grip: The Key to Effective Offspin
The grip is arguably the most crucial aspect of bowling offspin effectively. A proper grip allows the bowler to impart maximum spin on the ball while maintaining control over its release and trajectory.
- Position the ball in your hand with the seam running vertically across your fingers.
- Place your index and middle fingers on either side of the seam, spreading them slightly.
- Rest your thumb on the opposite side of the ball, near the bottom.
- Ensure your ring finger and pinky are tucked in comfortably against the ball.
This grip configuration allows you to use your fingers to “roll” the ball upon release, imparting the necessary spin. Practice this grip until it feels natural and comfortable in your hand.
Common Grip Variations
While the basic offspin grip is effective, some bowlers prefer slight variations to suit their style or hand size. These may include:
- The two-finger grip: Using only the index and middle fingers on the seam.
- The cocked-wrist grip: Bending the wrist slightly for additional spin.
- The split-finger grip: Spreading the fingers wider on the seam for more control.
Experiment with these variations to find what works best for you, but always ensure you maintain control and consistency in your deliveries.
Mastering the Run-up and Delivery Stride
A smooth, consistent run-up and delivery stride are essential for maintaining balance and rhythm in your bowling action. Your run-up should be comfortable and allow you to build momentum without compromising your control.
Start with a shorter run-up and gradually increase its length as you become more comfortable with your action. Focus on maintaining a steady pace and rhythm throughout your approach. As you reach the delivery stride, your non-bowling arm should be high, acting as a counterbalance and guiding your bowling arm’s path.
The Importance of a Stable Base
A stable base during the delivery stride is crucial for maintaining balance and control. As you plant your front foot, ensure it’s pointing towards the target. Your back foot should be parallel to the crease, providing a solid foundation for your bowling action.
The Art of Release: Maximizing Spin and Accuracy
The moment of release is where the magic happens in offspin bowling. To achieve maximum spin and accuracy:
- Keep your bowling arm straight and close to your ear as you approach the release point.
- As you release the ball, rotate your wrist and fingers from behind the ball to the side.
- Aim to release the ball with your palm facing the batsman.
- Follow through with your bowling arm, bringing it down across your body.
This action imparts spin on the ball while maintaining control over its direction. Practice this release technique repeatedly to develop muscle memory and consistency.
Fine-tuning Your Release Point
The exact point of release can significantly affect the trajectory and behavior of your delivery. Experiment with releasing the ball slightly earlier or later in your action to find the optimal release point for different types of deliveries, such as flighted balls or quicker, flatter ones.
Developing Variations: Expanding Your Offspin Arsenal
While mastering the standard offspin delivery is crucial, developing variations can make you a more effective and unpredictable bowler. Some common variations include:
- The arm ball: Delivered with a straight seam and minimal spin, it appears to drift in towards the batsman.
- The doosra: A delivery that spins in the opposite direction to a standard offspinner, often disguised with a similar action.
- The topspinner: Imparting topspin on the ball causes it to dip and bounce more than expected.
- The slider: A faster, flatter delivery with minimal spin, often used as a surprise variation.
Practice these variations alongside your stock ball to keep batsmen guessing and increase your chances of taking wickets.
The Importance of Disguise
Effective offspin bowling often relies on subtle variations and deception. Work on maintaining a consistent action across your different deliveries to make it harder for batsmen to read your intentions. Small changes in grip, wrist position, or release point can create significant variations in the ball’s behavior without telegraphing your plans to the batsman.
Training and Practice Techniques for Offspin Bowlers
Improving your offspin bowling requires dedicated practice and targeted training. Here are some effective techniques to enhance your skills:
- Target practice: Set up targets or stumps and practice hitting specific spots consistently.
- Spin drills: Use a wall or a partner to practice imparting maximum spin on the ball.
- Variation practice: Alternate between different types of deliveries to improve your versatility.
- Video analysis: Record your bowling action and analyze it to identify areas for improvement.
- Strength and flexibility exercises: Focus on building core strength and improving shoulder flexibility to support your bowling action.
Incorporate these techniques into your regular training routine to see consistent improvement in your offspin bowling skills.
Mental Preparation for Offspin Bowlers
Bowling is as much a mental game as it is physical. Develop strategies to stay focused and confident under pressure. Visualization techniques, breathing exercises, and positive self-talk can all contribute to a stronger mental game, helping you perform at your best when it matters most.
Analyzing and Learning from Professional Offspin Bowlers
Studying the techniques and strategies of successful professional offspin bowlers can provide valuable insights and inspiration for your own bowling. Some notable offspin bowlers to observe include:
- Ravichandran Ashwin (India)
- Nathan Lyon (Australia)
- Moeen Ali (England)
- Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka, retired)
Pay attention to their grip variations, release techniques, and how they set up batsmen with different deliveries. While it’s important to develop your own style, learning from the best can help you refine your technique and tactical approach.
Adapting to Different Conditions
Professional offspin bowlers excel at adapting their techniques to various pitch conditions and match situations. Observe how they adjust their line, length, and pace based on factors such as pitch characteristics, weather conditions, and the batsman’s strengths and weaknesses. Developing this adaptability in your own bowling can make you a more versatile and effective player across different scenarios.
Troubleshooting Common Offspin Bowling Issues
Even experienced offspin bowlers can encounter challenges with their technique or consistency. Here are some common issues and potential solutions:
- Lack of spin: Focus on your wrist and finger position at release, ensuring you’re imparting maximum rotation on the ball.
- Inconsistent line and length: Practice your run-up and delivery stride to improve consistency in your action.
- Difficulty with variations: Start by mastering your stock ball before gradually introducing variations into your repertoire.
- Fatigue during long spells: Work on your physical conditioning, particularly core strength and shoulder endurance.
- Mental pressure in match situations: Develop pre-delivery routines and mental strategies to stay focused and confident.
Remember that overcoming these challenges often requires patience and persistent practice. Don’t be discouraged by setbacks; instead, view them as opportunities for growth and improvement in your offspin bowling journey.
Seeking Professional Guidance
If you’re struggling to resolve persistent issues with your offspin bowling, consider seeking guidance from a qualified cricket coach. A coach can provide personalized feedback, identify technical flaws you may have overlooked, and offer targeted drills and exercises to address specific areas of weakness in your bowling.
The journey to mastering offspin bowling is ongoing, requiring dedication, practice, and a willingness to continually refine your technique. By focusing on the fundamentals of grip, run-up, and release, while also developing variations and adapting to different conditions, you can become a formidable offspin bowler. Remember to study professional players, address common issues, and seek guidance when needed. With persistence and the right approach, you’ll be well on your way to mastering the art of offspin bowling and executing the Google ball trick with precision and effectiveness on the cricket field.
(Do a Barrel Roll) & 13 Fun Google Tricks
Updated: February, 2021
Google is continually keeping us on our toes, and not just in the arena of digital analytics , pay-per-click or SEO. Entertaining us with their daily doodles and hiding “easter eggs” on their search result page is part of the fun-side of Google that we all enjoy. Here are some of Stikky Media’s favorite Google tricks we pulled out of Google’s magic hat.
Do a barrel roll
One of the first easter eggs released by Google is “do a barrel roll”. It’s a popular Google search trick released in 2011 and is still active today.
To experience an authentic Google-style barrel roll, just type the words “do a barrel roll” into Google’s search engine, hit enter, and watch your screen do a 360-degree turn!
Classic. Isn’t it?
Green hill zone
Enter the words “green hill zone”, aka the first level of the iconic 1991 video game Sonic, into Google for a fun throwback to the classic Sega game.
Click on the blue hedgehog icon of the game (you’ll find that on the right-side panel on your desktop/laptop) to hear the legendary ear-splitting tone.
Keep the fun going by clicking the icon a total of 25 times to see Sonic become powered up.
Askew
Type in the word “askew” into your Google search box and watch your screen shift slightly down and to the right, essentially, going askew itself. One of our favorite Google tricks!
This one’s a Google oldie, but still a goldie.
Pac-man Google trick
A quick Google entry of the phrase “pac-man” and you’ll be playing the classic arcade game in seconds.
Enjoy the rush of being chased by pastel-colored ghosts, without running out of quarters!
Zerg Rush
Want to see Google colored circles jerkily move their way down your page while you try to click on them? Then type “zerg rush” into the search bar on the Google home page and click the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button for a fun and quick challenge.
Red and yellow circles will descend down your screen, erasing all the text.
When all texts are erased the circles will migrate back up to form 2 uppercase “G”’s.
“Go Google!”
This Google easter egg pays tribute to the 1998 classic video game, Starcraft.
Google sphere
Type “google sphere” into the search on the Google homepage, and hit “I’m Feeling Lucky”. Then move your mouse around, in circles, side to side – whatever you want – to make it react!
The further you take your mouse pointer left or right, the faster the elements will move. It feels so weird (and magical) when “holding” the sphere!!
Google gravity
Type “google gravity” into the search on the Google homepage, then click on the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button. A single click anywhere on the screen, and watch it drop!
Google gravity underwater
Similar to Google Gravity, this one adds an extra element. Type in “google gravity underwater” or simply “google underwater”, hit “I’m Feeling Lucky” and you are down amongst the fish.
Want more fish? Hit return (or click on that floating “Search” button) and more fish will fall from above.
Roll a dice, color picker, metronome, flip a coin
Here’s an easy way to play any number of dice-related games on the fly! Enter the phrase “roll a dice” (or “roll a die”) into the Google search for a virtual dice throwing experience. You can choose from several different die styles and combinations. Click on the blue “roll” button to initiate the dice rolling.
Google offers other tools you might find useful as well. Check these out:
“color picker”
“metronome”
“flip a coin”
More games…
Still feeling bored? Google offers a number of other games you can play as well. Try typing in “tic tac toe”, “solitaire”, “minesweeper”, or “snake” – whatever strikes your fancy and while away the hours immersed in fun and challenging activity.
“
tic tac toe“
“solitaire”
“minesweeper”
“snake”
To play “Snake” you need to go to the Google homepage, enter “snake” into the search box and click the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button. This’ll take you straight to Google Map’s snake game and you can play directly from there. You can choose from different locations and you have to pick up passengers to your snake-like bus.
Pretty cool game with the classic snake touch!
Translator and Secret Languages
Language barriers can be broken down with Google’s translator services. A wonderful tool to use when traveling or, in other language-restrictive situations. Google translator, like almost all things Google, is quick, easy-to-use, and powerful.
You can change the default language Google will post it’s prompts. Click on the square of 9 dots on the top right corner of Google homepage.
Go to Account and then Data & Personalization from the left side menu. Scroll down to General preferences for the web section and click on Languages. Not only can you switch the default language to almost any language in the world you might have heard of, there are a few more unusual languages as well.
Get your messages from Google in Bork-bork-bork (Muppet-speak) or Ewmew Fudd (Elmer Fudd-speak) or Klingon, or pirate to add a bit of fun into your day. Ours is set to Bork-bork-bork, as you can see.
Calculator
This is one of the most practical Google tricks. If you need quick access to do some number crunching, say, when it’s time to split a bill, double-check receipt charges, or figure out tip amount, Google is there to help!
Enter “calculator” into your Google search box and a handy-dandy calculator will pop up.
Explore Mars
Everybody is going to Mars these days. You can too! Just type “google mars” in Google’s search box and the first result will let you explore the red planet.
It’s a nifty creation by Google itself. Easier and much safer than taking a rocket.
Also, it’s totally free!
Get the answer to life
Feeling disillusioned? Need to know the answer to it all? Just type in “answer to life the universe and everything” and Google will provide the answer: (check out for yourself).
Yup. You can put your mind at ease now.
This definitive answer is a sweet nod to Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy which first made this claim.
To wrap up…
Even though you now know the answer to life, you may still need more mundane, every-day, down-to-earth tricks to level up your marketing.

Houston Astros Prospect Fooled By Perfect Hidden Ball Trick In Game
A Texas Rangers farmhand completely befuddled a Houston Astros prospect with a perfectly executed hidden ball trick on Thursday … and the epic play was all captured on video!
The trickery happened in the third inning of the Corpus Christi Hooks game against the Frisco RoughRiders — after ‘Stros prospect Justin Dirden knocked a base hit into right field.
As Dirden was celebrating the feat with his first base coach, Trey Hair devised a plan. The Rangers prospect hid the ball in the back of his glove and slowly made his way to Dirden.

@RidersBaseball
In footage of the play, you can see Hair made a swipe at the bag, which caused Dirden to leave it — and then he casually tagged the runner out.
Dirden was left perplexed, and questioned the umpire about the call. But, it turns out the ump said everything was legal — and Dirden was ruled out!
Awesome play — but Dirden ended up getting the last laugh … the 24-year-old went 3-for-3 with a home run and 4 RBIs, and the Hooks ended up winning 9-5.

Football tricks can be repeated at home. Lessons from a professional freestyler – Beetle in an anthill – Blogs
We won’t let you get bored in quarantine.
The self-isolation regime in Moscow has been extended until the summer, and it is possible that the same will be done in some other regions of the country. So, the usual life is still far away. For those who have already watched all the Netflix documentaries and old-school matches on the recommendations of Vadim Lukomsky, we have found new entertainment.
Football tricks are the perfect way to distract yourself during self-isolation. All you need is a ball and some space around. By the way, a partner is not needed – an important nuance for those who are experiencing quarantine alone.
Below is a master class from Alexander Melnikov (professional freestyler, participated in the world and European championships). Alexander and his friends have a Planet Freestyle team – they not only teach people how to freestyle (you can learn their tricks here), but also promote culture through shows and concerts (they even came to Ivan Urgant).
In recent years, Alexander also works as a freestyle coach. We asked him to talk about the best feints for home performance.
***
Disclaimer: Before starting, make sure that there are no breakable objects nearby and choose suitable shoes.
Let’s go!
Chasing.
The easiest feint. The foot is firm, we gently toss the ball.
Neck stall
This trick is considered one of the easiest (although there are guys who catch on the neck from a great height – it’s more difficult).
When holding the ball with your neck, you need to pull your head up, you need to look higher, your back is even, we stretch your shoulder blades up. When tossing, we lower our head down, the chin should touch the chest, the ball rolls along the back of the head, and when it reaches the top of the head, you need to straighten your head and body vertically.
To catch it again on the neck, you need to look at the ball, and when it is slightly above the level of the head (2-5 cm), then you need to lower yourself with the ball to the starting position (back is straight, head stretches up, shoulder blades also up ).
Heel catch (in Russia it is called “clamp”).
The trick is best done from the ground. You let the ball bounce to about waist level and then catch it between your calf and thigh. To hold the ball, be sure to pull your heel towards you.
Sitting tricks: soles stall and heel catch
The soles stall trick came to freestyle from the circus.
Once upon a time (around the 60s or 70s, but I’m not sure) there was a cool circus act with a soccer ball, where the performer showed the skill of soles (here is a similar video). Initially, soles in freestyle were performed trivially – either holding or chasing. Then the Japanese began to complicate it by adding body movements with the ball. Now they do a lot of incredible tricks, adding acrobatics, gymnastics, elements from dances.
Magellan – the exercise was named after the traveler who traveled around the world. Symbolically: you also make a turn around the ball, and then, without touching, do it again.
The exercise is difficult, but there are several life hacks: the hook is done when the ball is at waist level, the touch must be with the toe, and not with the whole foot (for faster repulsion), the leg is immediately returned to its original position, making a turn.
Transition – neck stall – roll – heel catch
It is necessary to tighten the neck and back to fix the ball, smoothly guide it down and catch it with the calf muscle. It is important to pull the heel towards you to fix the ball.
I’ve never heard the name of this trick, but it can be called like this – crosses in sitting tosses.
We rest our hands on the floor, hands become the center of gravity. Legs crosswise, the ball is sandwiched between the insides of the feet. We throw the ball, quickly change our legs and catch it with our feet.
Hook over
A technically difficult trick, to do it, you need to follow all the steps very clearly.
First, you need to place the ball on the footstall (holding the ball on the center part of the ball of the foot), raise the straight leg up and immediately lower it down.
Second, kick the ball behind your pivot foot and turn your body slightly to the left so you can see the ball.
Third: Throw the ball up with your knee more bent and your leg relaxed. Quickly turn around on the supporting leg 180 degrees. We do not take our feet off the floor.
Slap
This is a pretty tricky trick. It is better to start doing it not from minting, but from the spot. Raise the ball with your right foot while it’s in the air, step forward with your left. When the ball goes down, catch it and pick it up again with your toe.
Slap is now a very popular trend of tricks, one of the most popular among girls.
Opposite crossover
Important: the leg on which the trick is performed must be in the air. When we release the ball (it is better to start with the hands), we push off with the supporting leg and kick the ball up with it (the foot must be firm, the toe up), the second leg instantly makes a turn over the ball.
The technique is similar to the crossover (another popular feint), but the push is done with one foot instead of two.
***
A few final tips from a football freestyle coach.
What is the difference between indoor football tricks and regular ones?
Feints are the same, the execution technique is different. At home, you are more restrained, so some tricks are done with less amplitude.
What trick would you like to show, but it is not suitable for the house?
I wanted to do a three-turn trick, but there was a possibility of breaking something. So I focused on easier tricks. In addition, barefoot I have much worse control than in shoes.
How to prepare for feints, what exercises to do to warm up?
I would suggest running in place, straight leg jumping in place and squats. Then pull the muscles and ligaments a little: lunges, imitation of transverse and longitudinal splits, plus I would add inclinations, arm swings and circular rotation of the ankle on the ball.
Ball. Need something special? What is the best surface to put on your foot?
The ball is not important, the main thing is that you like and feel comfortable. I use original adidas balls, my favorites are krasava and tango.
With shoes, the main thing is comfort. I prefer shoes with wider soles (examples of good football shoes: tiempo, sala, lunar gato), but freestylers tend to use special 4freestyle shoes.
Everyone has been in quarantine for a month now. How has quarantine affected your work on the Planet Freestyle show?
There is no work during the quarantine. There are no performances, and the school is also closed at the moment.
Why football tricks are cool and good for the body?
This is a very good aerobic exercise, plus you train coordination, flexibility and control with the ball. But, I think that the coolest and most useful thing is to fantasize and come up with new tricks. Freestyle trains thinking and imagination very cool.

One day, young Thomas Edison came home from school and gave his mother a letter from his teacher. Mom read the letter aloud to her son, with tears in her eyes: “Your son is a genius. This school is too small and there are no teachers here to teach him anything. Please teach it yourself.”
Many years after his mother’s death (Edison was by then one of the greatest inventors of the century), he was looking through old family archives one day and came across this letter. He opened it and read: “Your son is mentally handicapped. We can no longer teach it at school with everyone else. Therefore, we recommend that you learn it yourself at home.
Edison sobbed for several hours. Then he wrote in his diary: “Thomas Alva Edison was a mentally retarded child. Thanks to his heroic mother, he became one of the greatest geniuses of his age.”

The performance of the illusionists “DiArchi” at the 28th solemn ceremony of presenting the national cinema award “NIKA” PRIZE.
Julius Gusman invites Lithuanian illusionists Diana and Arvydas (DiArchi’s tetra of magic) to the stage.
Arvydas draws the attention of the public to a small chest containing a certain prediction.
From now on, the chest will be in full view until the end of the issue.
For an experiment based on mental magic, illusionists need a randomly selected person from the public.
Diana descends into the hall.
During the “democratic elections” Leonid Yarmolnik was elected, who, at the request of Diana to point to any person, pointed to Andrey Zvyagintsev. Arvydas asks Andrey to name any card from the poker deck.
Why does the director of the films “Leviathan”, “Return”, “Exile”, “Elena” randomly choose the Queen of Spades? Mystery.
The illusionist says that before entering the stage, he took one card from the deck and put it in an envelope that is in his wallet. He immediately takes out his wallet from his pocket, takes out an envelope and demonstrates to the public that there is exactly the card that Andrey Zvyagintsev randomly chose – this is the Queen of Spades!
Explaining how illusion differs from logic, Arvydas demonstrates a trick, the secret of which he teaches to everyone present in the hall.
The time has come to announce the winner in the nomination “Best Actress”, for this the Honored Artist of the Russian Federation Vladimir Dolinsky and his daughter Polina take the stage. Diana asks them not to name yet who the academics have chosen.
Arvydas takes out a flask from the chest, which contains an envelope with a prediction. Promising that everyone will now see the actress who won the Best Actress nomination, the magicians take out a photograph of a six-month-old baby from the envelope. Who is this? In the nomination, this year, well-known and talented actresses Agniya KUZNETSOVA “YES AND YES”, Elena LYADOVA “LEVIATHAN”, Severia YANUSHAUSKAITE “STAR” are represented.
In the photograph with the child, the card is clearly visible – the Queen of Spades. It was this card that Andrey Zvyagintsev named!
Vladimir Dolinsky and his daughter Polina open the official envelope and finally read out the name of the winner, this is Elena Lyadova!
