What to Look for in Goalkeeper Gloves
One general rule of thumb to remember is that the the big players — Nike, Adidas, Puma, Under Armour, Umbro — don’t dominate goalkeeping like they do in the rest of football.
The goalkeeper gloves produced by many smaller, specialist brands offer equal (and often better) specifications — without the premium price tag.
Whatever brand of GK gloves you decide to buy, look for the following attributes.
Performance
The performance of your goalkeeper gloves is determined by the materials used to manufacture them, and how they’re put together. I’ve written two posts to help you:
- Goalkeeper Glove Latex Types. It’s the single most important feature of your gloves. The quality of the latex palms influences how much grip and control you have of the ball.
- Goalkeeper Glove Cuts. This describes the way the materials — the latex palms and backhand — have been stitched together. Your glove cut can impact your level of comfort, flexibility and “feeling” of the ball. But it’s mainly a matter of preference.
Comfort & Fit
Comfort is subjective. Goalkeepers tend to prefer a cut type offered by a specific brand, in a particular size (which isn’t necessarily the one recommended by the size guidelines).
Generally, premium priced goalkeeper gloves feel softer, more padded, with noticeably higher quality inner materials. However, some glove lines won’t ever fit your hand shape correctly, no matter what size you try. So the perfect ‘feel’ is not always linked to price.
Finding the perfect glove is really a matter of trial and error. Check product comments, try out your friends’ gloves, and watch YouTube review videos to get an idea of the gloves you’re about to buy. Of course read my articles here on Top Goalkeeping — they’ll save you some time!
Value for Money
Value is determined by the performance of your gloves in relation to their durability. Striking this balance is the key to getting a good deal.
The general advice I give is to shop within the £30-40 price bracket. This way you’ll be able to dodge:
- Low quality ‘flat cuts’. These are the entry-level gloves (such as the Nike FA16’s) typically sold in sports shops. They’re made from cheap materials, offering weak grip and minimal hand protection. They’re also prone to ripping and wearing out pretty fast.
- Over-priced specs with little payoff. Expensive gloves provide an upgrade in performance that’s somewhat negligible unless you play at a very high level, under consistent conditions. Furthermore, that hefty price tag doesn’t guarantee the gloves will last any longer than slightly cheaper models.
- Hyped up new lines. Every year glove brands release new designs to help capture their share of the market. But the fact is, there’s often next-to-no difference between many new models and their predecessors. You’re often better off buying last years line (and the same goes for football boots).
They’re made from cheap materials, offering weak grip and minimal hand protection. They’re also prone to ripping and wearing out pretty fast.There’s certainly some expensive goalkeeper gloves that do perform outstanding well — such as the Reusch G3’s. But be cautious, as some high-end innovations — like the Nike Mercurial Touch Elite’s — have started to gain a reputation for poor durability.

My son (13 years old) has been using the GK brand t1tan, but recently all of their gloves are either out of stock or only come in different sizes than his size. My son learned about this brand through a coach and immediately got them. He likes the negative cut style, how the glove looks, and the grip. He’s had these gloves for 6 weeks and the grip still feels brand new. The only downside to this glove is that the durability is similar to cheaper gloves. All of the fingers have lots of rips in them, but the palm has held up with minimal damage. Great glove and I definitely recommend it to other goalies.

I have now worn the Aero Brave gloves for four games and so far love them. I expected them to wear very quickly due to the light and thin nature of the glove, but that really isn’t the case. The grip hasn’t worn off at all so far.
I have only noticed one inconvenience, but that may go away as my hands get bigger. After some of my games, I have had pain between my two fingers.

The box cut or flat palm is a traditional cut that is mostly found on the cheaper market today.
A single piece of latex for the palm and fingers is sewn to the back of the glove with inserts.
Using inserts makes the glove tighter, but they don’t provide as much latex coverage, which means they provide less grip than other cuts.
Negative cut
Negative cut similar to box cut, but inserts are sewn on the inside of the glove.
This means the glove has a tighter fit and slightly more grip, although it is more prone to wear than a square cut glove.
Roll Finger Cut
A rolling finger or shotgun cut wraps the latex around the finger and connects it directly to the back of the glove.
Not using inserts gives more latex area which improves grip, although this means it doesn’t fit as tightly around the fingers so it may not feel as snug.
This cut can also have negative stitching on the inside of the glove to further increase the surface area of the latex, but again, this means wear is more likely.
Combination haircuts
Instead of sticking to one style, some gloves use different finger cutouts to combine the benefits of different styles.
For example, a glove might have a rounded slit on the index and little fingers to increase latex contact for grip, but a negative slit on the remaining fingers to improve overall comfort and flexibility.
Palm type
The material of the palm plays a big role in the performance of gloves.
Professional players prefer latex for more grip, but it’s not the most durable material and wears out over time.
Rubber or a combination of rubber and latex will extend the life of the gloves and are often better for practice or friendly play.
Palm thickness also plays a role: thinner palms provide better ball touch but less protection and cushioning.
Most gloves have a palm thickness of about 4mm, which is a good starting point if you are not sure what suits you best.

Finger protection (finger saving)
Almost every brand now offers gloves with some form of finger protection, often with a plastic lining at the bottom of each finger, to prevent injury from overstretching.
