Custom Dye Sublimated Lacrosse Shorts, Pinnies, & Shooters

After a few years of going under the radar in the apparel side of the lacrosse industry, I decided it was time to come back with a bang with this full custom uniform design for Malvern Prep’s youth feeder program Militia Lacrosse, which is based out of Philly. Now, after seeing dye sublimation and the progression in clothing it gave me the ambition to get back in and jump start the Stylin’ Strings brand outside of lacrosse pockets & dye jobs.

After incorporating in 2001, in a very small lacrosse market I wanted to build our own clothing line. This was before the apparel boom a few years ago. By 2005, we had our own tags I designed and manufactured. We launched a series of 6 or so spoof designs on T’s, Hoody’s, & Long sleeves and launched them at the 2005 national lax convention prior to mass social media and our first online store so we were a little to far ahead of our time.

So here you have it, we are back designing custom Team logos, Dye Sublimated Shorts with or without pockets, Shooting Shirts, Jersey’s, and Reversible Pinnies. Displayed here is the white side of the pinnie with the full Militia Lacrosse logo w/ stick. I ghosted the tail of the cape under the small number on the front. You can also see the cape finished on the back under the number and it points to the color matched Stylin’ Strings Lax logo bottom right. The tops of the shoulders I used to ghost our custom camo/crazy glue look inspired from our custom dye jobs. The sides of the pinnie also have 4 color camo with white, grey, lime green, & navy. Militia’s coach Bob Dilonno just wanted to make sure the lime was an accent color or I would have went crazy with it.

Here is the full navy side of the reversible with all the colors adjusted to reverse out of the navy. You will see the Stylin’ Strings custom tag sewn into this side.

The shorts were my favorite to design since I saw them popping up everywhere and on almost every young laxer. I was 24 when I first starting designing our clothing and after a 7 year retirement it was cool to make these fresh new designs after my skills had improved with years of experience in the Media Industry. The front left leg I ghosted the Militia guy’s face. The right leg carries the traditional logo placement and the ghosted custom camo/crazy glu pattern. This slide also shows the left side of the shorts with MILITIA down the leg inset in the 4 color camo.

The back of the shorts has the glue pattern on the same leg as the front and the shoulder of the militia guy finishing from the front. The right leg side I put the lacrosse stick from the full logo with the butt end pointing at a full color SS Lax logo.

Here are the shooting shirts. They wanted them mostly grey so I enlarged the Militia head and made his cape small just to carry it through. The same 4 color camo was brought into the sides to match it up to the shorts. The light grey camo/crazy glue pattern is in the main body. The collar and the shoulders have a darker grey then I ghosted the cape on the shoulders. Here you get a close up of the clothing tags I designed 7 years ago with my first slogan of Be Original…Any Style, Any While. Even with all kinds of shorts designs and other clothing out there I always wanted to be as original as possible designing any style with my flare into it. Any While, in my translation means keeping it timeless. The Stylin’ Strings logo I designed 12 years ago with the intention of it lasting until I was old and grey.

The back of the shooter we brought in the MILITIA from the side of the shorts and dropped the Stylin’ Strings Lax logo at the top of the neck to brand the gear. A special thanks goes out to Malvern Prep, the Militia coaching staff, and Bob Dilonno for dealing with the parents on the order for sizing. We spun this order from design to finish in 3 weeks with one day to spare before their first summer tourney. The Backstory

I was going for a run the other night. While listening to my iPod, Sam Adams, the rapper, came up on shuffle.  Adams is from Cambridge, Massachusetts, and went to college at Hobart and William Smith Colleges for two years. It was while he was at Hobart where he recorded his first single “I Hate College (Remix)”. Now, you may be wondering, “What does this have to do with lacrosse?”

I will tell you.

In the song “I Hate College (Remix)”, Adams says, “I felt lost saw some herbs all wearin’ Lacoste, couple dudes in pinnies musta played lacrosse”.

That inspired me to write this article about all the pop culture references that deal with lacrosse.

Everyone can agree that lacrosse has grown a ton over the last decade or two and the larger media world is even starting to pick up on this. The movie “Crooked Arrows” was one of the first major motion picture that was fully centered around lacrosse.

So, let’s dive into the list of other major lacrosse pop culture references.

Sean Parker: Facebook, Napster, Lacrosse?

In 2010, David Fincher’s film “The Social Network” was released. The movie is about the creation of Facebook. There is a particular scene in the movie where Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake) and Mark Zuckerberg (Jessie Eisenberg) are talking about Napster. Sean Parker explains that he created Napster to impress the girlfriend of the varsity lacrosse captain so that he could win her over. I checked the validity of that story and couldn’t find how true it was, but nonetheless, even if Arron Sorkin made that part up, it is pretty cool that he chose to use lacrosse.

American Pie

My final reference is both the most famous and probably the most classic lacrosse movie reference “American Pie”. The 1999 comedy is about a group of seniors in their final months of high school.  What is the sport that they all play? You guessed it, lacrosse! A very old school version of early 1990s brand of lacrosse that is, but classic nonetheless. Chris Klein and Sean William Scott are both stars on the team, and the movie includes some good lacrosse scenes. Whenever movie buffs and lacrosse fanatics are on the same topic, “American Pie” always comes up.

I’d also like to point out that the goalie in the movie is a Mercyhurst alum.  Sorry, but I had to get that plug for Mercyhurst in. Although, now you have some extra trivia to impress your friends with.

Mean Girls: Leaving It All Out On The Field

The fictional North Shore High School Lady Lions Lacrosse team is featured at the end of the movie “Mean Girls”, when one of the main characters, Regina George, is shown to have joined the team based on the advice from her therapist that she should take up sports in order to let her anger out on the field. It’s safe to say she did just that.

Just to clarify, we’re not sure what version of the high school rule book they were playing by, but is probably based on a localized version of how athletes in the Midwest tend to play lacrosse (the story of the movie is based in Illinois).

Lacrosse has made casual appearances on shows like “NCIS”, “Modern Family” (where Alex Dunphy plays lacrosse and is also considered to be the family nerd) and “Weeds”.

Archer: Growing The Game, Even Among Pirates

From a major motion picture all the way to a TV mini-series, I found lacrosse references. The main character, Sterling Archer, from the hit TV show “Archer” is a lacrosse fanatic. Archer is the top agent at a secret United States spy agency. He went to a very private and prestigious prep school and was an all-star in lacrosse while there. In years past, prep schools and lacrosse were synonymous with one another. Throughout the two seasons of the show that have been aired thus far, there have been a number of references to the sport of lacrosse. One of these was when Archer becomes a captain of a group of rebel pirates and establishes an intramural lacrosse league.

Teen Wolf: Two Cases Of A Double-Edged Sword

This past summer MTV even produced a new series called “Teen Wolf”.The premise of the series was about a young kid in high school who gets bitten and eventually turns into a werewolf. The big sports team that the main character is trying out for is the lacrosse team. Traditionally, the hero goes out for the football or basketball team to impress the girl. This time it’s the lacrosse team.

The Simpsons: Pointing Out The Obvious By Ignoring It

“The Simpsons” episode called “There Will Be Buds” aired on November 6, 2016. In this episode of “The Simpsons”, Milhouse’s dad, Kirk Van Houten, suggests that the local youth take up lacrosse in place of football after the football season is suspended due to concerns over concussions. Nobody wants to hear it, but eventually, everyone agrees to support the idea even though lacrosse also has a pretty high rate of its athletes sustaining concussions.

Also, Paul and Gary Gait get a shoutout in the show, which Casey Powell wrote about for LaxAllStars.

The Daily Show: Real Recognizes Real

“The Daily Show”, which was hosted by Jon Stewart at the time, had an episode a number of years ago that actually saw lacrosse legend Oren Lyons make an appearance. The show included a climate change rally that was taking place in New York City and Oren Lyons was seen at the event standing next to celebrities like Mark Ruffalo and Edward Norton.

Oh, how good it is in the forest! It smells like spring. The snow melts, the first insects appear. Trills, chirping and birdsong are heard. After all, the birds that flew to warm lands in the fall return to their homeland. They enjoy the warmth and the sun.

Rooks are among the first to arrive. This usually happens in March.

In the old days they said: “I saw a rook – meet the spring!”

Rook is a large black bird with a purple tint.It looks like a black crow, but the rook’s beak is lighter and the skin around the beak is devoid of feathering. Rooks can be up to fifty centimeters long. Rooks usually live in large colonies, several dozen nests per tree.

Rooks build their nests from twigs, lumps of clay, moss, dry grass.

Rooks communicate with their relatives, croaking loudly.

Starlings follow the rooks. There was such a sign among the people: “You see a starling – know, spring is at the porch.”

Starling is a small but very beautiful bird. Its black feathers shine with a metallic reddish, purple, greenish sheen. Moreover, here and there white specks are scattered.

Everyone knows that starlings are useful birds. They walk on the ground with their heads down, looking for food. With their long beaks, they grab beetles, weevils, caterpillars and other insects.

For the arrival of starlings, people make houses for them – birdhouses. But starlings can also settle in the hollows of trees, in the voids of outbuildings.

The spring song of the starling is good. What sounds you will not hear in his song! Starlings are able to imitate the voices of many birds and animals. In the singing of a starling, one can hear the ringing trill of a nightingale, the quack of a wild duck, and the croak of frogs.

They very rarely fall to the ground, because their short legs are not adapted to walking on the ground.

Smiling sweetly, the old toad crouched low in the water in front of the girl and said:

– Here is my son! He will be your husband! You will gloriously live with him in our mud.

The toads took the shell and swam away with it. And Thumbelina still stood alone in the middle of the river on a large green leaf of a water lily and cried bitterly – she did not want to live with the ugly toad and marry her disgusting son.

The little fish that were swimming under the water heard what the old toad said. They had seen the groom and mother before. Now they stuck their heads out of the water to look at the bride.

Looking at Thumbelina with their round eyes, they went to the very bottom and began to think what to do now. They were terribly sorry that such a pretty little girl would have to live with these disgusting toads somewhere under a snag in a thick oily mud. This will not happen! Behind the forest in which she lived was a large field. The bread had been removed from the field long ago, and only short dry stalks were sticking out of the frozen ground.

It was even colder in the field than in the forest, and Thumbelina was completely frozen as she made her way between the dry, tough stems.

Finally she reached the mink of a field mouse. The entrance to the burrow was carefully covered with blades of grass and blades.

But he hated the sun and scolded all the flowers.And no wonder! After all, he had never seen a single flower in his life.

That was joy! And the swallow sat up in its nest, and sang to them as best it could. But she herself was very sad: after all, she had fallen in love with the girl and would like not to part with her for centuries.

When the toads left to prepare a home for the newlyweds, Thumbelina began to cry. The fish heard her and decided to help. They gnawed at the stem of the leaf, and a nice little girl swam away from these toads. And then she got to the May beetle, but his friends found the girl too puny and ugly. Then he left Thumbelina on a camomile. Upset, she sat and cried. It seemed to her that she was ugly, although in fact she was pretty.

When things began to go to the wedding with the mole, the girl began to regret that she had not flown away with the bird.And on the main day before the wedding, Thumbelina asked to say goodbye to the sun outside, where she met a swallow. And this time she did not refuse to fly away with her.

They flew away together to a warm land, where Thumbelina was on a flower, next to the king of elves. At the end of the tale, the king of the elves proposes to her, and the girl receives a pair of wings for the wedding.

The work “Thumbelina”, a summary of which is set out above, must be read by every child and adult, and in full.

Throughout the winter, Thumbelina was caring for a swallow, injured on a thorn bush and falling behind its relatives, and in the spring it flew away, inviting the girl to fly with her (she refused – it was a pity to leave the mouse).

Meanwhile, a mole had already wooed Thumbelina, and everyone was getting ready for the wedding. In the fall, the dowry was ready, and at the girl’s words that she did not want to marry a mole, the mouse threatened her with her teeth. On the wedding day, the bride went out to say goodbye to the sun and flowers, and met a swallow.

The bird again offered to fly away – and this time Thumbelina did not refuse. In the warm edge, the swallow planted her friend in a flower, where the king of the elves sat. He proposed to the beauty, and for the wedding she was presented with a pair of beautiful wings.

Cloudberry is a dioecious plant. Unripe cloudberry fruits are bright red, firm. As they mature, they turn yellow and become soft. Ripe berries are translucent, like amber, with a pleasant smell and distinctive taste.For its taste and smell, cloudberries are called northern pineapple. From time immemorial in Russia, fresh and soaked cloudberries were served to the tsar’s table as the most valuable berry of the North. Cloudberry is rich in vitamin C and A, tocopherols and potassium. Cloudberries help protect the body from cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

Following the cloudberry, the crowberry ripens, it is also the crow or shiksha. You can meet crowberry in peat bogs and coniferous forests, especially in the tundra. The main “worker” of the shop is a professional digital printing machine Konica Minolta C1060.Unlike conventional office printers, this machine is capable of printing thousands of vibrant color images without loss of quality. After printing, the products are sent to post-printing processing. Basically, all rectangular products are cut on a guillotine.

If you need to make a book or a magazine, a hot-melt glue machine comes into play, which makes the binding. If it is a notebook or calendar, holes are made in it on an industrial punch and then stapled on a semi-automatic brochure.On it, the spring tape from the reel enters the machine, which itself counts the required number of loops, string the product and crimps.

Also, depending on the order, the product can be completed by a folder (folding machine), a booklet-maker and a professional industrial laminator. The latter, by the way, appeared in the printing house only this year and is a very valuable acquisition.

And if a client needs non-standard products, for example, gift boxes of an unusual shape, then they can be cut out on a flatbed plotter.Such things are collected by hand.

Sometimes such rush orders happen. For example, a client comes in the evening, and by the morning he needs to receive a large order. And we always meet halfway and always find a way out in order to preserve our reputation.

The silk-screen printing shop is constantly noisy and warm due to the working hoods and drying apparatus.It uses the ancient Chinese method of applying a pattern using a thin fabric. It used to be silk. Synthetic materials are used in modern technologies.

Silk-screen printers use pre-illuminated forms (frames on which the “canvases” are stretched) apply paints to the canvas or product – color by color. Such printing requires intermediate drying for each next color. The very last one will be painting black as an outline, if needed.

You can print on textiles – T-shirts, sweatshirts, windbreakers – on a “carousel”, or “helicopter”, as it is called in the professional community.This machine has six printing tables for printing images on textiles. After applying each color, the frames with paint are changed, and the products are pre-dried. Then all six items are sent to the tunnel oven, where the pattern is “baked” and becomes stable. The subtlety of this technology lies in the fact that each new color, when applied, falls into place. To prevent the textile from moving during the printing process, it is glued to the printing table with a special glue.

It is also possible to apply patterns to various other items, such as umbrellas, diaries or branded bags, using the silk-screen printing method on a flatbed press.

The possibilities of creating unique products do not end there. An order for business and promotional souvenirs in the printing house can also be fulfilled by the sublimation method – transferring paint under pressure and temperature to the product.

There is also a pad printing press – practically a “veteran” of the shop. He has been working in the shop for four years. With its help, images are applied to pens, power cans, bottle caps, key chains, flash drives and other little things.

Its disadvantage – it prints incomplete color images – up to two colors.But it does a great job with logos, lettering and simple pictures.
