Message from The Chairman for the CSRA Alliance for Fort Gordon
The CSRA has an exceptional relationship with Fort Gordon. This is largely attributable to the fact that we have a stand-alone organization with this focus as its primary mission. The Alliance is the go-to organization for connecting and building military and community links which make partnership and economic development efforts far more efficient and effective than they would be otherwise. The community has been able to maximize and leverage the economic power of Fort Gordon because we have an economic development agency that fills this unique role.
Let me share a little history and background on the Alliance.
The CSRA Alliance was created in March, 2003 by Charlie Norwood as a non-profit organization. The original missions were to:
Create awareness in the community of the threat of base closure and the potential economic impact should Ft Gordon be realigned or closed.
To inform political and senior military leaders of the capability and effectiveness of Ft Gordon to perform its missions and accept additional missions.
To identify and improve area quality of life characteristics so the CSRA would be viewed by the Department of Defense as a favorable place for service members and their families.
And finally, in the event of closure of Fort Gordon, position the community for base reuse.
Along the way, in the ensuing two and one-half years, we accomplished a lot of things:
Hired McKenna, Long & Aldridge and Hurt-Norton & Associates as Washington-based partners and resources to interface with our congressional and senior military leadership.
We did a lot of research on our community and region to promote the CSRA quality of life.
We defined the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities related to Fort Gordon missions.
We created public awareness of the issues by making presentations to over 100 civic clubs, business organizations, and government agencies throughout Georgia and South Carolina.
We served as the Augusta area representative on the Governors Military Affairs Coordinating Committee, working to coordinate state level support and funding for the preservation of Fort Gordon.
We coordinated numerous visits for community leaders to meet with congressional leaders, senior military leaders, and the US Army Training and Doctrine Command.
We helped coordinate numerous high-level visitors to Ft Gordon to including then Gov Perdue, the Commanding General of the Training and Doctrine Command, and Congressional representatives including the Speaker of the House and then Senators Chambliss and Isakson.
And we raised funding from government, business and private donations to support these activities.
And finally, in the event of closure of Fort Gordon, position the community for base reuse.
The bottom line of all that effort was that the CSRA Alliance for Fort Gordon was successful in rallying the entire Greater Augusta community behind a common cause – supporting Fort Gordon – and showed that Augusta’s favorable quality of life and strong support for the military make it a great place for service members and their families to live and work. And in the end, Fort Gordon was basically unaffected by BRAC 2005. What a great success story for the CSRA!
The good news is Fort Gordon is well poised for new missions and is now designated as the Army’s Cyber Center of Excellence and home to the Army Cyber Command. This, combined with related mission growth, leads to projected overall growth of several thousand military and civilian positions. This makes the CSRA Alliances engagement and advocacy efforts as important as ever. The Alliance has already partnered with the CSRA Regional Commission to orchestrate community growth planning, with emphasis on schools, housing, and transportation road networks. The projected mission growth will also attract many defense contractors to the area adding to the needs mentioned as well as creating additional needs for office space spacing issue within the CSRA.
To be successful we need the community to assist in our efforts by:
Ensuring future community planning incorporates Forth Gordon projected growth needs through road improvements, housing area development, school expansion and new school location plans, and development of office parks.
Showing support for service members and their families through military discounts, events for service members and their families, and just expressing appreciation to those who voluntarily chose to serve in uniform. As members of the community, Fort Gordon service members, civilians and their families need to be welcomed into neighborhoods, churches and schools.
Participating in Fort Gordon events and utilizing those Fort Gordon activities open to the public such as the Gordon Lakes Golf Course, the Fort Gordon riding stables, bowling center, Gordon Club and dinner theater.
Assisting the CSRA Alliance in its mission by participating in Alliance sponsored events and assisting with the Alliances annual funding requirements.
Members of community, welcome into neighborhoods, churches, schools, volunteers
We hope we can count on your support!

90,000 Mason Henry Gang – Mason Henry Gang
Mason Henry Gang bandits working in Central and Southern California in 1864-1865. While the civil war was raging, they could pose as Confederate guerrilla rangers, and their original mission was to rid the territory of (anti-slavery) Republicans. But when it became clear that the Confederate case was lost, they turned to crime, robbery and ruthless murder.
The two leaders were John Mason, the alleged killer, and Tom McCauley, a California gold rush criminal known as Jim Henry. At the peak of popularity, the gang could number up to sixteen people.McCauley was shot dead in September 1865 by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s squad Benjamin Franklin Matthews, and Mason was killed in April 1866 by the miner Ben Mayfield, whom he was trying to kidnap.
Mason and Henry as Partisan Rangers
In early 1864, a staunch supporter of the South from Maryland, Separatist Judge George Gordon Belt, rancher and former mayor in Stockton, used his ranch on the Merced River to organize a group of guerrilla rangers. They will be led by two southerners, John Mason and “Jim Henry”, and they will be sent to recruit more men and loot the property of Union men in the countryside.
Unfortunately, Judge Belt chose his men poorly. Both men had an unpleasant past. Mason was a southern-born former stage host who reportedly killed several men. = Jim Henry was a criminal whose real name was Tom McCauley. He and his brother were robbers in the gold camps and together they killed a man in Tuolumne County in 1856.He was sent to prison for ten years and his brother was hanged. After being released from prison, McCauley returned to robbery with a gang on the Fresno River. When several gang members were captured and lynched by the vigilantes, Tom McCauley fled and became Jim Henry again.
In the spring of 1864, the gang moved to Santa Clara County, the center of Copperhead sympathizers, to recruit new members. Sadly, it was a dry year that crippled the economy, and the increasingly bad news of the war scared off most of their recruits as well. They returned unsuccessfully to the San Joaquin Valley.
By October 1864, with the presidential election approaching, Mason and Henry’s gang had become robbers. However, they called themselves Confederate soldiers and managed to enlist the support of local bugbears. They threatened to kill any “Black Republican” they met.
Mason and Henry become criminals
On November 10, 1864, Henry’s Masonic gang committed their first crimes, three murders, shortly after Abraham Lincoln’s second election. These crimes were described in the Stockton Daily Independent for Monday, November 14, 1864:
- In the evening after the election, Mason and McHenry went to Dutch Charlie, against whom they were spiteful, and killed him. From his house they went to Mr. Hawthorne, knocked on the stable where the 3 hired men were sleeping, and after intimidating these men, pulled out their pistols, went into the house and killed Mr. Hawthorne [spelled in two ways]. They then returned to the stable, telling the people what they had done and that they intended to kill all the Republicans they could. They took Hawthorn’s watch, a double-barreled shotgun, and two horses from the stable. From Hawthorne they walked towards Mr. Robinson’s house. After drinking the water, they asked Mrs. Robinson where her husband was. She replied that he had not yet returned from the elections, but that a van was driving up the road, and she thought it was him. They moved towards the wagon. Mason came up first. He turned to Robinson: “I was told that you said that there is no decent woman in the South. Did you say that? ” “No, I didn’t know,” Robinson replied. “You are a liar and I am going to kill you,” Mason said. Then Robinson jumped on him. Mason flicked the pistol, which missed the target, and then fired from another barrel, breaking his victim’s shoulder and arm. Robinson then fled, but was pursued by McHenry, who shot him twice, first in the arm and then in the back of the head, killing him. The killers then told the man who was traveling in the van with Robinson that he could go to the house and tell who killed R. and, moreover, why they did it. Mason also told him that he was the man who killed two soldiers at Fort Tejon and one at Babbitt Camp, and that Mason was not his real name; that he was hunting the Republicans and intent on killing everything he could. The assassins were well armed, each with a double-barreled gun and 2 six-shots. It seems that they were not influenced by predatory motives, but exclusively malicious intent against the Republicans. Both of them have been in the Gilroy area for several months now, and were sighted near South San Juan last Wednesday. It is hoped that they will not flee for long on their own merits. This is the worst kind of guerrilla, cruel like Apaches and fanatical like crusaders.
In the same article, a reward is announced for their arrest and conviction;
- Reward for Mason and McHenry – Governor Lowe offered a reward for the arrest and conviction of 2 consecutive killers, Mason and McHenry, who killed 3 people in cold blood on election night and the next day.The circumstances surrounding these murders are such that they require the prompt extermination of these two villains.
The gang then crossed the Pacheco Pass and headed for Santa Cruz County. They hid near Corralitos and often visited Watsonville, where they were sheltered by local separatists.
Soon after the murders, they staged a scene on the road from Watsonville to Visalia, killing three men and vowing to “kill every Republican they meet.”Under the pretext of being Confederate guerrillas, the gang terrorized Monterey County and surrounding counties over the next several months.
At the end of January 1865, Company B, 1st battalion of local cavalry, Californian volunteers, a detachment of Californian Lancers arrived from San Francisco to Camp Lowe in San Juan Bautista. Shortly thereafter, the camp commander, Major Michael O’Brien of the 6th California Infantry Regiment, received intelligence on the whereabouts of Henry’s Masonic gang.A detachment of local cavalrymen under the command of 1st Lieutenant John Lafferty searched for them, but to no avail.
On February 18, 1865, Captain Herman Noble dispatched a detachment of Company E, the 2nd Californian Cavalry Army, commanded by Sergeant Rowley, from Camp Babbitt near Visalia on a long pursuit of what was believed to be Henry’s Masonic gang. They passed through the deserts of Southern California, south to Sonora, Mexico. In the March 15, 1865 issue of Visalia Delta, the persecution was described as follows:
- Mason and Henry – A troop of soldiers sent from Camp Babbitt by Captain Noble under the command of Sergeant Rowley has returned to the camp in pursuit of the aforementioned Constitutional Democratic assassinations of Union members. They report a very hard fight, having traveled over 900 miles in the most desolate country; several times they went for a walk for two or three days without food for themselves or food for their horses. They followed their trail several times after leaving Fort Tejon and finally tracked them down to Sonora, when they were forced to abandon the pursuit due to the fact that their horses could not stand and could not find new ones. The fugitives were well-off with gold, with $ 3,000 or more at their disposal. Many believe they went to recruit a guerrilla force and will return to hunt down allies in the lower state. They could find many recruits and more than at home. No doubt Visalia would provide several birds of prey and one or two surgeons to bandage their broken bones, and most likely a chaplain to help their wounded souls, as well as several spies, forgeries, and informers. As for good fighters, there will be fewer of them here. The party was absent for twenty-five days.
In April 1865, Henry’s band of Freemasons attacked the Fireboe Crossing. When word of attack arrived at San Juan Bautista, Captain Gimeno, a Cavalry native, in command of Camp Low, again sent Lieutenant Lafferty with a five-man squad to intercept the gangs in the hopes of leading them to Panoche Pass on the western side of the Diablo Ridge. The next morning they met Mason. Mason spurred his horse in an attempt to escape, but Lafferty fired a single bullet that wounded Mason in the thigh and wounded his horse. Although the soldiers captured the criminal’s horse, Mason somehow managed to elude them. At six that night, Lafferty and his soldiers returned to Lowe’s camp on horseback.
Breakup of the gang, death of Henry
Although the civil war ended, the gang was still under pressure in Central California, so they moved to Southern California and disbanded. In July 1865, Mason and another member of the gang, Hawkins, pulled weapons on the Kern River rancher Philo Jewetta, who fed them lunch. The rancher fled, but his chef John Johnson was shot and killed. Hawkins was later captured and hanged based on Jewett’s testimony, but Mason was still at large.
Henry and his gang first moved to the Upper Little Creek and Sun Sevine Flats in the eastern San Gabriel Mountains, rustling and committing robberies and murders. In September of that year, he and his associates set up camp south of San Bernardino and sent John Rogers into town for groceries. There Rogers began to drink. After getting drunk, he began to brag about his connections with criminals. Local sympathizers of the Union took note of this, and soon Rogers found himself in the company of San Bernardino County Sheriff Benjamin Franklin Matthews and his squad, leading them to the outlaw camp. After walking about twenty-five miles, they found Henry camped in San Jacinto Canyon. At sunrise on September 14, the party approached cautiously when Henry awoke. He rose to fire three shots, hitting one member of the squad in the leg. Henry died in a hail of gunfire, receiving 57 wounds. His corpse was taken back to the city, photographed and displayed in a fashion that was later typical of the Wild West. Rogers was sent to prison for five years.
Death of Mason
John Mason continued his criminal career in Los Angeles County near Fort Tejon and in what is now Kern County with a $ 500 bounty per head. When Ben Mayfield was driving to Fort Tehon from his Little Creek mine in April 1866, Mason joined him on the trip and later tried to recruit him into his gang. When Mayfield refused, Mason threatened to kill him and also threatened to take another man’s horse, W.H. Overton, and kill him. That night, when all three were in the same house, no one fell asleep, but early in the morning Mason lay down on the bed under the covers, but did not sleep. Overton went out to look after his horse, then Mason tried to shoot Mayfield out of bed.Mason’s pistol became entangled in his blanket, giving Mayfield the chance to shoot him first.
Mason’s death was announced in the Stockton Daily Independent on Saturday, April 21, 1866:
- Mason, Desparado, killed – Visalia, April 20 – Mason from the well-known Mason and Henry company was killed a few days later in Tejon Canyon by some citizens. There seems to be no doubt that this is a real Freemason. It seems that there were several of his clans, and all came out, except for the leader.
Benjamin Mayfield Tests
Mayfield was not rewarded for his efforts, but was instead charged with murder by Mason’s friends and put on trial in Los Angeles County.
The Sacramento Daily Union on June 23, 1866 quoted judgment from The Wilmington Journal :
- On the evening of June 8, the jury in the case of Benjamin Ben Mayfield, who killed the robber John Mason, was convicted of first degree murder. The next day he was sentenced to be hanged on August 1. The killer’s lawyer intends to refer the case to a higher court if possible.
Mayfield’s appeal led to a retrial on September 15, 1866. The jury again found the defendant guilty of murder in the first degree, and the defense lawyer demanded a new trial, which Judge de la Guerra refused. The prisoner was sentenced to be hanged in August 1867. At the request of the Supreme Court, the case was suspended.Ben Mayfield was eventually rehabilitated.
Membership
The estimated number of gang members ranged from sixteen to four or five. Members came and went. Some disappeared with constant bad news about the cause of the war. Others probably left when they became disillusioned with the criminal behavior of Mason and Henry, which had nothing to do with the war.

How US President John F. Kennedy lived: Phenomena: Values: Lenta.ru
Lenta.ru continues the cycle of materials about the luxurious life of rulers of different countries and eras. In the last article, we talked about one of the brightest women of the twentieth century – Grace Kelly. After the wedding, this American actress had to give up her career in Hollywood. She was idolized in the principality.Beautiful and elegant, she delighted the audience with luxurious outfits and jewelry, her photos did not leave the covers of magazines. This time we will talk about John F. Kennedy – a native of the richest American family of that time, a young talented politician, a socialite, a war hero, a favorite of women, a Pulitzer Prize winner, whose life ended so suddenly.
John F. Kennedy ranks second in the list of the richest presidents of the United States. Only the current American leader Donald Trump was ahead of him.The 35th head of state owned a capital of $ 1.1 billion.
The United States has never had a royal family, but the Kennedy clan is best suited for this role. Almost every member of this dynasty held an elective position in the government.
Born into a wealthy Irish family, John inherited his entire fortune. His father was one of the richest people in the country, a member of the close circle of President Roosevelt. John F. Kennedy was not initially prepared for a brilliant political career. The father had high hopes for his eldest son, Joseph. Meanwhile, the second son, who in childhood was very frail and sickly, graduated well from school, and then Harvard. After the death of his eldest son, the head of the Kennedy clan decided to bet on John and did not lose. At the beginning of the future, the head of state needed to be married.
Even before meeting Jacqueline, John F. Kennedy, a famous womanizer, always appeared at various events in the company of some young and beautiful companion. In his environment, they joked that he devoted little time to the woman herself, since he was constantly busy, always in a hurry somewhere. “He knew how to have sex, looking with one eye at the hands of the clock.” One of Kennedy’s acquaintances once said that he was more interested in “the quantity, not the quality of the partners.” The adventures of the American womanizer were legendary. “With John it was dangerous to leave any woman – your sister, wife, mother,” – his close friends did not calm down.
In September 1953, a royal wedding took place in the United States: the future first lady married the future president.“The whole celebration resembled a coronation,” one of the guests described what was happening. At that time, Kennedy was already a Senator from Massachusetts. The politician’s father chose Jacqueline as his daughter-in-law, in his opinion, she was the best suited for the role of the wife of a famous statesman.
Neither the bride nor her family wanted such a magnificent celebration, but the Kennedy clan insisted that the wedding should be celebrated on a grand scale. “You are just marrying your daughter, and at this wedding I have to introduce the country to the future first lady of the United States,” he said then to Jacqueline’s mother.About two thousand people came to see the newlyweds, and over 1.2 thousand guests shook hands with the newly-made Kennedy couple for two hours.
It was decided to arrange a wedding reception at the bride’s estate. The banquet turned out to be truly luxurious: an exquisite menu, a huge wedding cake, live music, dances, as well as eminent guests – from politicians to Hollywood stars. The couple decided to spend their honeymoon in one of the most luxurious resorts in Mexico.
The wedding took place in one of the most beautiful Catholic churches in the city of Newport – St. Mary’s Church.Pope Pius XII himself sent a personal blessing to the Kennedy couple. John F. Kennedy is currently the only Catholic of all 45 US presidents. It was especially important for the Kennedy clan that the bride was of the same faith as the groom. Jacqueline did not disappoint here either – she was a Catholic.
For the engagement, the groom presented the bride with an emerald and diamond ring from Van Cleef & Arpels. However, the future Mrs. Kennedy did not like the decoration. After moving to the White House, she redesigned the ring, adding more diamonds – 2.88 carats.
However, it took another eight years for Kennedy to move to the Oval Office. However, it was not so difficult to win, albeit with a margin of only one percent of the vote. Kennedy’s every television appearance was carefully thought out. He became the first pop idol president.
A photogenic young president, surrounded by handsome family members, with an oratorical ability. With his beaming smile during the first televised debates, he looked far more attractive than Republican rival Richard Nixon.
Jacqueline, who became the first lady, took care of the improvement of the new home. “At the time, the White House was clearly unlike the main residence of a superpower leader and his family. Inside, everything was dilapidated and in a terrible state: from the sewerage system to the interiors. The White House was cluttered with cheap office furniture and gaudy sofas. An atmosphere of asceticism reigned everywhere, ”- roughly this is how Jacqueline Kennedy described what she saw during the inauguration of her husband, the 35th President of the United States. She was even more terrified that soon she would have to move her children to this residence.
Then she decided to start the reconstruction of the White House. For this, designers from Paris were called. The money allocated from the budget for repair work quickly ran out. And the first lady herself began to seek funding, calling billionaires, famous collectors and antique dealers with a request to donate money or any piece of art in order to “turn the White House into a symbol of the greatness of the United States.”
So, in the main residence of the presidential couple, expensive furniture made of rare wood species, antiques, expensive paintings and tapestries appeared. However, sometimes, tired of the hustle and bustle, the family went to other, more secluded residences. One of the most beloved homes was the Wexford mansion in Middleburg, Virginia, designed in a traditional American style.
Jackie, as the Americans called her, also worked on the design of this country residence: five bedrooms, a spacious living room with a panoramic window that occupies an entire wall, a stylish kitchen, a dining room, a library, a nursery, and a comfortable study with a fireplace. Near the mansion there was everything for a comfortable stay for the couple: beautiful gardens and a swimming pool, a tennis court and a stable. The terrace, where the family usually dined in nice warm weather, had a stunning view of the mountains.
Photos and videos from the Kennedy family’s vacation amazed Americans. The president, rightfully considered one of the most stylish leaders in US history, looked spectacular and harmonious both in the White House and on vacation, surrounded by his family. In the United States, they joked that they did not have a single picture in which the politician turned out to be unsuccessful. He loved variety and sometimes even extremes: from strict jackets to tucked up chinos.
He wore ties, and in different styles, cuts and colors: from striped to plain and decorated with patterns. But the suit is always designed in one color, usually John F. Kennedy preferred gray or dark blue shades. At the same time, there must certainly be a white scarf in his pocket.
At various celebrations, he appeared in brilliantly tailored tuxedos made of expensive fabric. Outside the White House, John allowed himself to wear a polo, as well as throw a light jumper over his shoulders, instead of trousers from a suit – chinos.Light-colored sneakers and a shirt worn over a T-shirt also went well for the president. Expensive watches as an indispensable attribute. Kennedy loved the Omega brand. The watch was presented to him by his close friend Grant Stockdale, even before the victory in the election of the head of state. The engraving on them read: “To US President John F. Kennedy from his friend Grant.”
“Kennedy always dressed tastefully (…), despite the fact that he refrained from wearing overly stylish clothes on a daily basis, he always dressed better than everyone around him – in part thanks to a huge collection of shoes,” – described John Kennedy is one of the American experts on classic menswear and footwear in his book.
The politician gave preference to luxury brands: with formal suits he wore black and dark brown oxfords with cut off capes, sometimes wearing something less formal – for example, derby shoes. On vacation, Kennedy chose loafers, it is believed that it was he who introduced the fashion to wear them without socks. He also had his favorite light-colored canvas shoes, which he wore when he went somewhere on one of his yachts.
The president’s entourage joked that the famous ladies’ man loves yachts more than women. So, some of them turned into a “floating White House”, such as “Manita” – where the head of state received well-known diplomats and politicians. On board was a small fireplace and a luxurious bathtub, in which, according to rumors, Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe loved to lie.
John was used to sailing since childhood – his father and grandfather also loved to spend time with their family on the yacht.
The Honey Fitz, named after John F. Kennedy’s grandfather, even had an elevator. Inside – lacquered dark wood trim.In addition, the yacht had a small copy of the Oval Office. It was here that the president held meetings with representatives of his administration at the height of the Cuban missile crisis. According to close friends of the politician, Kennedy admitted that it was on this yacht, with his family, that he experienced the happiest moments of his life.
Tuscany – amore mio. The elite province of Italy
The Italian province of Tuscany is the beautiful nature of the Apennines, warm climate, medieval cities and well-developed infrastructure.Wealthy Russians buy real estate in the region so often that it has become a sign of belonging to the elite. However, if you search, you can also pick up budget options here.
Da Vinci Code
I. BOGATYREVA Tuscany is one of the most famous regions of Italy, the cradle of the Renaissance. Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael are the names of the geniuses of medieval Florence. But not only Florence is famous for its glorious history, museums and Renaissance architecture.Numerous tourists are attracted by the cities of Siena, Lucca, Pisa, Val d’Orcia, Punta Ala, Argentario and many picturesque villages. In addition, romantic landscapes, beautiful hills and valleys, coastline with beautiful beaches deserve special attention.
The strategic location, historical heritage, high level of economic development make Tuscany the most popular tourist destination in Europe. This province is Italy’s leader in the number of five-star hotels.
There are a lot of tourists from Russia, Ukraine and the Baltic states in the constantly increasing flow of vacationers. For example, the authorities of the Tuscan resort of Montecatini are trying to meet the growing demand: since 2011, they have been allocating funds for the installation of signs in Russian, hiring Russian-speaking staff for restaurants and shops. Tuscany is one of the most economically developed regions in Italy, and its economy is one of the most open to foreign markets. It is a region where hospitality and an open attitude towards the outside world are deeply rooted in culture and have a positive effect on both the tourism industry and the industry of Tuscany. All of the above explains the increased interest in the province among investors from abroad, including from Russia.
Villas snapped up
It is natural that local real estate is one of the most demanded in Italy, the market is one of the best in the world for luxury investments.
“Demand for real estate, especially for elite real estate, most often far exceeds supply, so when an interesting object appears on the market, say, a private villa with an individual descent to the beach, it is sold in two to three weeks,” notes Oleksandra Yurchenko. Head of Overseas Property Department at Evans.- Increased demand also forms prices: in comparison with other regions of Italy, real estate is more expensive here. In addition, its purchase is a profitable investment for further rental. Well, houses in the rural areas of Tuscany are an excellent offer for those who want to enjoy culture and history at reasonable prices. ”
Tuscany, along with the region of the Italian alpine lakes, turned out to be the place where the real estate market is most stable in the context of the global crisis.True, prices have dropped slightly here as well. According to Elena Yurgeneva, director of the elite residential real estate department at Knight Frank, until 2008, prices for residential real estate in Tuscany were constantly increasing, but with the crisis fell by 20% relative to their peak values. Now the market in this region is quite stable, there has been a slight steady increase in value.
Not only Forte dei Marmi
The most prestigious places on the Tuscan coast are the resorts in the Versilia region – Viareggio, Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi.“Two or three years ago, when we said ‘Tuscany’, we meant Forte dei Marmi,” says E. Yurgeneva. – Indeed, this resort is one of the most comfortable places in the entire province. It is famous for its well-maintained promenades, restaurants, boutiques, nightclubs, etc. However, today there is a growing interest in Southern Tuscany, in its quiet and unspoiled areas. ”
This trend is easy to explain: many people like to relax in secluded places, enjoying the unspoiled nature and the special, measured life of the Italian hinterland.“And since its market has not yet been spoiled by international capital, its structure is unique here,” says Stanislav Singel, President of the international real estate agency Gordon Rock. – Sell old villas and houses with large plots of land. Many objects are of architectural or historical value ”.
Another competitor of Forte dei Marmi is the Cape of Monte Argentario, one of the most beautiful places in Tuscany. As E. Yurgeneva testifies, many people choose real estate here and even move from Forte dei Marmi, because the cape is much cleaner and more beautiful. In Forte dei Marmi, the landscape is fairly flat, with ordinary beaches, while on Monte Argentario, the cliffs descend to the sea, revealing small picturesque coves.
According to Knight Frank, the demand for real estate in the hinterland with its vineyards, olive orchards and stables has increased recently. This is confirmed by Yulia Kainova, an expert at Century21 Beverlywood Realty: “Someone likes to be in sight, in the center of resort events, while others prefer solitude. There are many examples of buying luxurious estates 20-30 km from the sea, surrounded by hills and vineyards, where only a certain circle of people who prefer to travel incognito have access ”.Estates with vineyards are sold in the Chianti, Val d’Orcia or Siena areas. But many people buy real estate in cities – offers of villas or penthouses can be found in Florence, Pisa or Siena. “At the same time, high prices in Tuscany are a kind of filter that predetermines the filling of the market with wealthy and, as a rule, educated home buyers,” notes S. Singel.
We do not need the Cote d’Azur
The Tuscan coast has many advantages even over the famous French Cote d’Azur, where, for example, the beaches are narrow (up to 10 m wide) and rocky, and Tuscany boasts dozens of them kilometers 50-60 m wide, in some places up to 100 m.These beaches are also well equipped and very picturesque.
Another advantage is the relatively low building density: there are many secluded coastal villas surrounded by unspoiled nature. On the Cote d’Azur there is more dense development, less land and real estate. If the Côte d’Azur is flooded with rich foreigners who need entertainment, mass entertainment events, the necessary acquaintances, then in Tuscany there are significantly fewer foreign home buyers, and all owners appreciate the opportunity for privacy.
“The cost of housing in the highest price segment of the Tuscan market is virtually identical to the prices on the French Riviera,” says S. Singel. – At the same time, such a price level on the Cote d’Azur is supported by the region’s ultra-high popularity among wealthy buyers, business activity, the influx of foreign home buyers, etc. And in Tuscany, the high cost is due to the large areas of plots and housing, pristine nature, limited supply, architectural and historical value of objects …Many of them were built much earlier than the French ones. ” But this is all about expensive housing, and the average prices in Tuscany, according to Yu. Kainova, are significantly lower than on the Cote d’Azur.
Liguria, an Italian province bordering the Cote d’Azur and located north of Tuscany, also loses in some ways. The coast of Liguria is low-lying and mostly with pebble beaches. In addition, there are railway tracks, many of them along the coast, which makes it impossible to buy real estate on the first line of the sea.At the same time, there are more popular resorts in Liguria. Well, prices here are comparable to those in Tuscan, and the structure of real estate markets in these two regions is largely identical.
Inexpensive Tuscany
I. BOGATYREVA In Tuscany, in order to preserve the historical appearance, the construction of residential buildings is limited, therefore the main investment objects here are various mansions, farms and residences for restoration. Apartments in renovated villas and mansions are the most affordable properties.“They are being remodeled so that instead of a large old house two or three stories high, we get about a dozen apartments ranging from 50 to 80 square meters. m. As a rule, each of these apartments costs 100-200 thousand euros. It should be noted that housing sold at such prices is not located on the coast itself, but near large cities, ”says S. Zingel. For example, in the city of Lecce, near Florence, they sell an apartment of 65 sq. m in a 15th century mansion. Antique style housing consisting of a kitchen, living room, bedroom, hall and two bathrooms sells for $ 175,000.Euro. The former villa has free parking in the courtyard, as well as a public swimming pool.
Quite reasonable prices for real estate in the heart of the province with mountainous landscapes, in distinctive towns located on the slopes of the hills. So, foreign buyers ignore the little-known area of Garfagnana, but it is here that the charm of the original Tuscany is strong, and prices for high-quality real estate start from 2500 euros / sq. m. With cheap provincial purchases, there are also curiosities: “It happens that a businessman buys a house-barn for 300-500 thousand.euro in the outback, but at home among friends and acquaintances positions it as “a villa in Tuscany”, – says Yu. Kainova.
Apartments with an area of 80–90 sq. m in Forte dei Marmi on the first line of the sea can be bought for 600 thousand euros, but with an effort, you can find decent options on the second and third line of the sea for 350-400 thousand euros, assures Yu. Kainova.
Apartments at unclouded prices are also offered in famous cities. For example, Evans sells renovated 80 sq.m with one bedroom in Florence, within walking distance to the main tourist attractions.
Cream of the market
On average, housing in Florence is expensive, especially on the Arno embankment. So, for 5.5 million euros, an apartment with an area of 330 sq. m. “The height of the ceilings is 6 m, the walls are decorated with ancient frescoes and marble. In addition to the master bedroom, the apartment has a guest room equipped with a fireplace. There are also two bathrooms, a toilet, a kitchen, two living rooms, a dining room and a large terrace, ”S.Singel. Tatiana Nikishina, director of overseas real estate at Moscow Sotheby’s International Realty, said that in the center of Florence, near the Ponte Vecchio bridge, there is an elite penthouse with a designer interior and an impressive view of the river; its price is 7.3 million euros. Villas are in demand among Russian buyers, both near Florence, Siena or Arezzo, and on the coast, where housing is more expensive than in the interior of the peninsula. According to T. Nikishina, a villa with a sea view on the Argentario coast with a panoramic pool, a guest house and a spa can be purchased for 3.2 million euros. But apartments in Punta Ala with one to four bedrooms in a residence by the sea cost from 430 thousand to 1.5 million euros.
“The most popular are houses with three or four bedrooms, a small garden within 1 km from the sea. The cost of such estates depends on the location and condition of the house and is on average 1–1.5 million euros, ”says Anastasia Rybochkina, head of the overseas property department at City House of Real Estate. Highest value coastal villas with private beaches.Their prices are such that the owners discuss them individually with the buyers. The range of prices in this segment is from 10 to 50 million euros per object and more. So, for 10 million euros you can buy a villa with an area of 1,500 sq. m on a plot of 50 acres. It is a home with a kitchen, three living rooms with fireplaces, a laundry room, two dining rooms, nine bedrooms and bathrooms, a basement and a storage room. The plot has a private beach and a private pier, on which there is another house with a kitchen, bathroom, dining room, refrigerator and a basement with a grotto.
In Forte dei Marmi, promoted by Russian buyers and in the traditionally popular Chianti region, the starting price for elite real estate starts from 6 thousand euros / sq. m and often reaches 15 thousand euros / sq. m and above, states A. Yurchenko. Housing in Montecatini is also in demand with many mud springs and balneological services, it is only 300 km from Rome and 70-80 km from the airport of Pisa, which receives private jets. Do not forget about such a specific segment of real estate as wineries – one of the most popular investment objects. From time to time, really worthwhile farms appear on the market, which is not only prestigious, but also profitable to be the owner. So, for such a property of 220 hectares in the center of Tuscany, an hour’s drive from Siena and the Tyrrhenian coast, they ask for 9.5 million euros. According to T. Nikishina, from 3.3 million euros will have to pay for a project in the Brunello wine region, for example, the Gaia villa with olive trees, a guest house and a swimming pool.
Private estates consisting of four to five detached residential buildings may be of particular interest to investors. These houses, equipped with everything you need, can form a kind of mini-village, which, if there is a lot of water and tourist infrastructure nearby, will bring considerable income to its owners. “For example, for 1.45 million euros you can buy an old estate of four residential buildings with a total area of 800 square meters. m, located on 1.6 hectares, – S. Zingel reports. – According to the project, it is possible to build another house with an area of 150 sq. m. In the courtyard of the estate there is a swimming pool, a dining area, a pizza oven and seating areas.Lake Montedoglio is located next to the villa-village. Now two out of four houses are rented out, the owner himself lives in one more, and a small house is used as an art workshop for painting ceramics. ”
OPINION
Anastasia Rybochkina, Head of Overseas Real Estate, City House Real Estate:
“The Tuscan coast is one of the most beautiful in Italy, this is a real paradise for gourmets! Traveling from the beaches inland, you can discover the stunning beauty of the places that once inspired Leonardo da Vinci himself.Buying a home in a location like this has become in many ways an indicator of well-being. A house by the sea or an old villa on the hills with a vineyard is a matter of personal preference. However, there is a unique landscape for everyone here. By the way, recently some shops in Tuscany have switched to round-the-clock operation, and this was done specifically for Russian buyers. ”
Alexandra Yurchenko, Head of Overseas Real Estate, Evans:
“In the last ten years, when foreign real estate markets became available to our compatriots, Tuscany, along with the famous northern lake region of Italy (Lake Como, Maggiore, Garda), is leading in prestige and popularity among home buyers.Basically, these are quite wealthy people, those who from year to year travel to the resorts of this region and ultimately decide to become the owner of a villa in the area they like. There is also a category of buyers who follow fashion and brand, that is, who consider purchasing a house or apartment in Tuscany as a way not only to save money, but also to assert themselves and confirm their status. ”
Who are “gytsali” and where was Slizhovka? Memories of post-war Grodno
Alexander Petrov, a Grodno old-timer and author of four books on tourism, continues to share stories from Grodno in the 1940s and 1950s.This time he remembers about transport in the city, building in the Zaneman part and why Grodno residents on Lososyanskaya were called “Americans”.
Read the first part: Ruins on Sovetskaya, explosions on the Neman and the construction of a bridge. A Grodno resident talks about post-war life in the city
Transport: carts in summer, sleighs in winter
In post-war Grodno, horse-drawn transport had a complete monopoly on ensuring the city’s life, recalls Alexander. In trade organizations there were not garages, but stables, goods were transported to shops by carts, in winter by sleigh. On the sledges, ice was also delivered for the glaciers – cellars that replaced refrigerators at that time.
When the ice on the Neman became thick enough, work on its extraction began just below the bridge. We sawed through the frozen river with ordinary hand saws.

“The sleigh loaded with rectangular blue blocks resembled icebergs floating in the city. The city dwellers had few horses with carts, some of them played the role of today’s cargo taxis. You need to transport something – go to the owner. The concept of “calling” did not exist, there were no telephones even in most organizations, ”recalls Alexander.
Pan Kostek and a tank at the bottom of the Neman
The most famous carrier in the city for Alexander was his neighbor on Lososiansky Lane – Pan Kostek. His “platform” was of the highest class – on springs, with a soft rubber running.
“Collecting and handing over of recyclable materials was an important help, mainly among young people. They accepted not only valuable scrap metal, but also rags, bones, paper. It was difficult to find expensive copper, but there was a lot of iron around. Pan Kostek was engaged in this business on a large scale, even brought steel caps weighing half a ton from the destroyed forts. Somehow, in secret, he told me that he knew where in the Neman, breaking the ice, a tank had drowned and he wanted to raise it. But he didn’t have time, he died tragically – he fell into the well ”.
I saw a car – the mood rises
Alexander recalls that on market days the city was filled with carts (in winter – sledges) of peasants who came from the nearest villages. The car was rarely seen.
“We went out onto a busy road and waited for hours whether the car would pass or not. If you saw – the mood rises. I spent my time knowingly, I have something to tell my colleagues about.
Almost all of these machines were “lorries”. In most of them, NKVD fighters with long rifles and dogs were sitting in the back of the truck on straw. ”
Grodno residents near the lorry. , recalls the Grodno resident.“Either the teachers will be killed, or the pioneer will be hanged for a tie near Folush,” says Alexander. At the same time, not only real bandits were called bandits, but in general everyone who was at least dissatisfied with something.
Public transport and the first two routes
Alexander practically did not see cars. Once a month, he might have come across a German trophy Opel.
“In what year public transport appeared in the city, I don’t remember exactly. Apparently, in 1950-1951, after the opening of the new bridge. The “bus fleet” consisted of two bow units. Their base was on the site of the current Institute for Teacher Training [Grodno Regional Institute for the Development of Education on Gagarin Street – Hrodna.life]. Small, with one door, which was opened by the driver using a long lever. ”

At first there were two routes in Grodno, one bus for each. No. 1 – from Lososno station to the railway station – and No. 2 – from Lososno village to the railway station. Both walked along the streets of Sovetskaya and Ozheshko. Came in and out on one side of the Neman – 50 kopecks from you, crossed the bridge – a ruble.
“Many were outraged by this injustice. After all, there were up to five stops on each side, and there was only one to cross the bridge. I do not remember that this public transport was overloaded. Unspoiled people are accustomed to walking. Including legless invalids, rumbling along the sidewalks on short boards equipped with ball bearings, pushing off the road with black palms. They rumbled for a year, and then they all disappeared at once.
Shit transports
Alexander says that one subtype of horse-drawn transport in Grodno should be noted. In all Grodno languages - Belarusian, Polish, Russian and even in Yiddish, specialists of this subspecies were called the same – shit carriers.
“There were not many of them in the city, we met infrequently, but everyone knew about them. Every house had amenities in the yard. And no matter how meager food was, the toilets were still filling up. And then they called him. With a horse, a cart, on which a large wooden barrel is fixed. The shit truck poured the product with a half-bucket ladle with a long handle. He worked slowly, the process took an hour or more. The stench was terrible. The aroma spread in all directions for about a hundred meters and people rushed to tightly close the vents, windows and doors. If there was no wind, the smell lasted a long time. ”
What did the “gytsali” do
In the post-war years, people of another profession used horse-drawn transport. They were called the Polish word hycel (gytsal). They had a dog cage on the cart. “Gytsali” rode around the city and caught homeless animals.
“They lured the dogs with something tasty. When a gullible dog approached “for a shot”, they threw a lasso around the neck and dragged into the cage. Where the dogs were “giggled”, what they then did with the carcasses – no one knew. It was easy to find out that such a hunter had come to us from the chorus of dogs already caught in a cage. Here all the boys jumped out of their houses and tried to somehow harm the flayer. They drove off street dogs, loudly teased “Gytsal, gytsal!”
Zanemonie and the harbor
Alexander spent his post-war childhood in the left-bank part of the city. Everybody called it, as he says, – Zanemonie, and the inhabitants – Zanemonians. To the west of st. Gornovyh, where Alexander lived [streets Gdanskaya (1946 – 1948), Zana (until 1953), Lososiansky lane (until 1964)], he knew every street, almost every house.
“Let’s start from the bridge. At the very top, parallel to the Neman, there is Darwin Street, and then Ulanskaya. Along it, to the left and to the right of the viaduct, a trench stretched over the precipice itself.Fresh, not yet overgrown with grass. They dug it all over with sticks, looking for something interesting. The competitors were lucky – they found a grenade, and our gang came across only rifle casings. German, which means the trenches were German. They fired at ours on the opposite bank. ”
From the bridge along the banks of the Nemunas, downstream from the bridge, a lot has changed now. On the site of the park there was a large sawmill. Alexander says that the area was “a kingdom of mountains of logs and pine bark.” The bark was a good raw material for carving boats.
“The timber floated along the Neman in the form of rafts. Several of them were always waiting in line for dismantling in a trap formed by the same rafts, but anchored.
We drove rafts from afar, several in a caravan. There was always a hut in the center, a campfire site was equipped nearby. There were usually two raftsmen. Falling into a trap is their most difficult and responsible task, and here they also have to drive away uninvited sightseers who climbed onto the raft like cockroaches from all sides. For us, sailing on a raft was chic, but for them our chic was a violation of the instructions. “

A little further down the Neman – the harbor, where the Grodno ships of all types stay.Where the entrance to the bay connects with the Neman, there was a small, but very popular among Grodno boys, beach, which was also called the Harbor.
“A trifle floundered in the paddling pool of the bay, the ‘experienced’ swam into the vastness of the Nemunas. Fun # 1 was riding the waves from a passing steamer. The main one was “Alexander Pushkin” with large wheels on the sides. For the Polish watch, it seems to have been called “Radziwiłł” [in fact, it was called “Jagiełło” – Hrodna.life]. Only a few aces managed to grab hold of the rotating blades afloat and not let go until they pulled the hero out of the water. It was considered almost a feat. Later, the passenger ship “Maria Melnikaite” appeared. It was used for excursions for students and workers. ”

Slizhovka
A plateau without a single house towered above Krasnopartizanskaya Street – the future streets of Gagarin and Mir. The field where vegetables grew had its own name – Slizovka.
“I still cannot understand the etymology of this original name. Slizh is the name of a Neman fish, but the fish seems to have nothing to do with it. On three sides, Slizovka is surrounded by deep steep slopes and seems to have been created for the construction of defensive structures on it.But she served only the peaceful gardening business. The field began immediately from the church; in the south, a deep ravine with a small stream served as a border. In a snowy winter – and all winters were snowy – the ravine served as a sports ground, was a joy to children. Sledges, skis, running around, screaming until dark. You could also see a hare running away there. ”

“Americans”
On the street. Soviet border guards (then – Lososianskaya), the city ended with Monyushko Street and the houses of two “Americans” – on the left and on the right. In 1961, a shoe factory was built behind them. Alexander remembers why these people were called “Americans.”
“In the 1930s, two Grodno Poles went to America to work. They did not spare themselves there, and when they returned a few years later, they bought a large piece of land with the money they earned. One to the left, the other to the right of the road from Grodno to the village of Lososno. They built solid houses against each other.
But then – bam! – 1939th year. It was yours, it is ours. The houses, however, were not taken away, like many others, and the vegetable garden was left.Grief and anger became the lot of their lives. They were unsociable, did not communicate with anyone, they were almost never seen on the street. No one knew their name or surname. They called them simply – “American Left” and “American Right”. Now, not a trace of their homes is left. “

Honolulu, the largest city and capital of the state of Hawaii (377 90 438 thous. inhabitants ). Outwardly, with skyscrapers and hotels, it is a purely American city, but the population and cultural heritage is a mixture of Asian and Polynesian ( more than half of marriages in Hawaii are mixed ). Americans mainland [mainland], ie 90,439 of the remaining 49 states are perceived by the indigenous people as ‘haoles’ [
ˊHauli: z] ( an old Hawaiian word for outsiders, now used to refer to all white people ). And these “outsiders” are quantitatively significantly inferior to the Hawaiians of Asian and Polynesian origin.Hawaiians in general, and Honolulu in particular, love to use the word “paradise” when talking about their home. But the history of the struggle for the souls and hearts of the local population of missionaries and merchants in the XIX – early XX centuries. ended with the Hawaiians losing almost everything. They were converted to Christianity, but lost their culture, they were taught to read, write, count, but they were infected with diseases against which they had no immunity. In 1893, Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown by the Americans who lived on the islands, and the islands were annexed by the United States five years later. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor (7 December 1941), the city of Honolulu entered the consciousness of the Americans as a transit point before being sent to the front. They called Oahu Island , on which the city is located, “Rock”, and treated it with hatred.
