Muscovites Mikhail Youzhny and Igor Andreev teamed up in doubles to advance to the second round of the Masters tournament in Miami, Florida. Our newly formed combination defeated a pair of Mardi Fish (USA) – Mark Knowles (Bahamas) with a score of 7:5, 6:4. The next opponents of the Russians will be the Polish duo, specializing exclusively in doubles – Mariusz Firstenberg and Marcin Matkowski.
I must say that our guys have not competed together since the end of last year – the last time they played a couple was in a competition in Valencia. And the fact that Misha and Igor agreed on a partnership is very gratifying, especially in light of the fact that in July the Russian team will have to fight at home with the Argentina national team in the Davis Cup.
Before the tournament in Florida, Andreev’s partner, in particular, was Evgeny Korolev, who currently plays for Kazakhstan. By the way, quite recently, at the “Masters” in Indian Wells, they left out of work not just anyone, but one of the strongest couples in the world – Mahesh Bhupathi (India) and Max Mirny (Belarus). And earlier, Igor played in doubles with many compatriots – for example, with Marat Safin. But still, Andreev did best with Nikolai Davydenko: in 2004 they won the Kremlin Cup together, and in 2005 they were finalists in Moscow.
As for Mikhail Youzhny, this year he does not play very much in doubles – he focuses on singles. Last season, he won the title in a duet with Wesley Moody from South Africa. In general, Yuzhny has several victorious doubles tournaments – in particular, with his namesake Zverev from Germany.
By the way, Mikhail Youzhny and Igor Andreev are the only representatives of Russia in the men’s bracket at the current competition in Miami. In singles, Andreev lost to the American Andy Roddick in the third round, while Yuzhny continues to fight. On Monday, at the stage of the third round, the opponent of Boris Sobkin’s ward will be the Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka.
What about the girls? The Russians, to our delight, are still in the game in Miami. Svetlana Kuznetsova fights Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli in the fourth round. Vera Zvonareva is trying to fight the Belgian Justine Henin, who beat Elena Dementieva in the second round – 6:3, 6:2. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will enter the court against Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark.
Unfortunately, we have to state that our Maria Kirilenko lost the victory in the match against the Dane the day before – 6:1, 1:6, 4:6. Wozniacki, the second racket of the world, did not show her best tennis, took medical breaks, asked her to measure her blood pressure, complained of a headache, but still managed to finish the fight in her favor.
Masha, whom her friend Igor Andreev supported in the stands, by the way, played very well in the beginning, but then there were many mistakes in her actions. And now, pardon the pun, not Kirilenko, but Karolinka is moving forward. Maybe Nastya will be able to stop her?
