Nike Tennis Camp at Emory University

John Browning is the fourth person in NCAA history, for any division, to win a national team championship as a coach and player. He did the former with Emory University in 2003, the first in school history, and the latter with California-Santa Cruz in 1989. He brings years of experience as both a coach and player to the court.

Browning, who had been head coach at two other NCAA Division III institutions, was appointed the head coach at Emory University in the summer of 1999. In each his 20 seasons at Emory, Browning’s teams have advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals while finishing in the top-five in the national rankings on 18 occasions. During his tenure at Emory, the school has advanced to semifinals of the national championships on 14 occasions.

The 2018-19 season saw Browning direct the Eagles to their fifth-ever national title, defeating No. 1-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 5-3, in the finals and ending the year with an overall record of 22-2. Emory closed the campaign with 18 straight wins.

During the 2016-17 season, Browning oversaw called the shots to the school’s fourth national crown, with the Eagles prevailing over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the championship showdown. The 5-2 triumph over the Stags allowed the Eagles to finish with a 22-4 ledger.

Prior to the 2017 national championship, the 2012 squad played its way to a first-place finish at nationals, with the Eagles recording the first undefeated dual-meet season in school history, finishing with a 25-0 slate. His first national title at Emory came in 2003, with his second coming in 2006.

Following the 2008-09 season, his teams had advanced to the semifinal round of the NCAA D-III Championships for eight straight years. Emory finished as national runners-up in 2007 and 2008 and claimed third place in 2009. During the 2010-11 campaign, the Eagles finished runner-up at the national championships.

Browning has coached four NCAA Division III singles champions with Michael Goodwin becoming the first player in school history to earn that distinction when he took home first place in 2009. In 2011, Chris Goodwin, Michael’s younger brother, claimed the title after defeating teammate Dillon Pottish in the championship encounter. In 2012, Pottish bounced back to claim the singles crown, topping Nick Ballou of Cal Lutheran in a three-set battle. Jonathan Jemison joined that exclusive club in 2019, topping Leo Vithoontien of Carleton College, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, in the finals. In 2013, the tandem and Ian Wagner and Elliot Kahler became the frst Emory doubles team ever to win the NCAA title.

In addition, Browning-coached Emory teams have claimed 16 conference championships.

During his distinguished stint at Emory, he has guided the program to 10 seasons of 20 or more wins while fashioning an impressive mark of 401-96 (.806).

Browning and his assistants have been honored 10 times as the conference Coaching Staff of the Year by the University Athletic Association, most recently in 2017. In addition, he has been tabbed the ITA as the Atlantic South Region Coach of the Year on four occasions, in 2003, 2009, 2011 and 2012.

For five years prior to Emory, Browning was the men’s and women’s tennis head coach at Salisbury State University (Md.). Before that, he spent three years as the head men’s tennis coach at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Calif.) and one year as an assistant men’s tennis coach at University of California-Santa Cruz.

His overall career coaching record for men and women combined is 537-167 (.762) over 28 years. He registered his 500th win on Feb. 24, 2018, when the Eagles battled to a 5-4 verdict over the University of Chicago in the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships.

His 200th win came in the finals of the conference championship, a 5-2 win against Washington (Mo.), on April 27, 2003, while his 300th triumph took place on March 15, 2008, when the Eagles won at Hawaii-Hilo, 5-2.

Browning is a 1990 graduate of California-Santa Cruz where he received his bachelor’s degree. He completed his master’s degree at Azusa Pacific University in 1994.

Browning assisted with the development of Emory’s recreational outdoor tennis complex that debuted in Spring 2003. In addition, he is the co-chair of the ITA National Ranking Committee and is a member of the Division III Tennis Committee.

John Browning, Head Men’s Coach and Director of the Nike Tennis Camp at Emory University, and Paul Settles, Head Men’s Coach and Director of the Nike Tennis Camp at Claremont Mckenna, battled for the biggest award in Division III tennis.

Coach Settles is in his 16th season as Head Coach, and 14th season as Head Director of the Nike Tennis Camp. During his tenure, Settles has established CMS as one of the elite programs in Division III tennis, reaching five NCAA tittle matches in the past seven years. Prior to reaching the championship in 2019, Coach Settles led the Stags to their first National Title in 34 years in 2015. Now posting a 421-86 record, Settles continues to shine as one of NCAA’s best collegiate coaches.

Coach Browning is nothing short of efficient when it comes to playoffs, leading his team to the NCAA quarterfinals each of his 20 seasons at Emory University. Before 2019, Coach Browning raised the National title four times for Emory, including a victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scrips in 2017. Additionally, Browning is only the 4th person in NCAA history, for any division, to win a national team championship as coach and player – Coach for Emory University and player for UC Santa Cruz.

Grab your tennis racquet and get ready to play! Whether your child has ever picked up a racquet or not, this camp will improve your child’s tennis skills and love of the game. Our tennis camp focuses on basic tennis skills, with emphasis on promoting healthy activity, hand eye coordination and balance and most importantly having fun which will create a well-rounded tennis player. Each player is given personal attention and taught through repetition in an enjoyable, lively atmosphere. Vance Exley Tennis breaks down the fundamental skills of tennis through easily understood games and exercises to help improve the athlete’s overall coordination and technique. Players learn proper grips, footwork, strokes, volleys and serves during a series of drills designed to teach skills in a fun and dynamic way. In addition to developing a love for tennis, athletes will learn the rules and etiquette that make tennis such an exciting game to play. Try to guess in which country the head of one of the leading universities recently gave the following speech: “…Universities can make mistakes in the same way as their staff and students. And just like people, universities must often remind themselves of the principles they want to follow … Discrimination against Jewish students undermined the foundations of academic ethics … of the faculty and, ultimately, of the entire university. I apologize for it. We ask forgiveness. ”.

At the end of October, it was reported that Valery Anatolyevich Senderov [1,2], a mathematician, human rights activist and teacher, a deeply religious Christian, known for his disinterested help to many people, was seriously ill.Valery Anatolyevich spent five years in camps in the 1980s for “anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda.” One of the directions of Senderov’s “anti-Soviet” activities was the fight against the anti-Semitism that flourished in the Brezhnev years in a number of the country’s largest universities, in particular, at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University [3]. He was among the organizers of the “Jewish People’s University” [4], in which well-known mathematicians read lectures on a voluntary basis to children who did not enter the Mechanics and Mathematics Department because of the fifth point.Many articles and books have been written about discrimination against Jews in entrance exams and the fight against it [3-11] – alas, mostly in English.

So who owns the words in the first paragraph? Do not be surprised: a few weeks ago, the president of the American University Emory in Atlanta made an extensive apology to the students who suffered from anti-Semitism at the Faculty of Dentistry in 1948-1961 [12]. They failed in exams and were forced to take the same courses several times.Many could not stand it and dropped out. Those who did graduate were traumatized for life by humiliation and injustice. The past cannot be reversed, but an official apology brought relief to the victims and improved the atmosphere at the university, having got rid of the “skeleton in the closet.”

Emory University was no exception – in the first half of the twentieth century, many American educational institutions were infected with anti-Semitism. In 1922, the president of Harvard University even proposed introducing an official quota for Jews – 15%, “for their own good, so as not to incite discord” [13].They say that too many Jewish students are divorced, they help each other and do not allow the rest to break through. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? The proposal was rejected after a long discussion, but the very fact of serious consideration of such an idea speaks volumes.

Some stages in the development of Russia and America are surprisingly similar, only they take place at different times. Of course, the histories of the Faculty of Dentistry at Emory University and the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at Moscow State University have their own differences: those few who managed to overcome discriminatory obstacles and enter the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics in the 1970s and 1980s were not hindered during their studies.Their problems resumed after graduating from the university – when assigning to work and entering graduate school, but that’s another story. It is also worth noting that most of the teachers of Mechanics and Mathematics did not participate in unseemly actions, and some did not hide their disgust at the shameful practice used in the entrance exams with the tacit approval of party officials.

I hope that the analogy with American universities is not limited to negative experiences. And twenty years later, the new rector of Moscow University will apologize to those who, due to their “wrong” origin, were not allowed to get the profession they dreamed of.But I would like the society today to celebrate the merits of Valery Anatolyevich Senderov, one of the “righteous men of the world” in Russian mathematics. In twenty years it may not be so relevant.

Operations

Much of the IRD’s work for USAID is done through collaborative agreements that are more flexible than contracts, with shorter deadlines and fewer requirements. USAID canceled and revoked the suspension and withdrew all statements confirming that the suspension was valid or appropriate. Employees who quit IRD were asked to sign confidentiality agreements.

IRD regularly hired people who previously worked for USAID, including former acting administrator Alonzo Fulgam.In 2014, it was reported that at least 19 former USAID employees were hired, some of whom were previously responsible for overseeing the organization.

IRD hired lobbying firm Wexler & Walker to develop its media strategy. Their 2010 guidance stated that the most important message to senior IRD officials is: “We are helping the most vulnerable people in some of the most insecure parts of the developing world.” ‘

Afghanistan

In Afghanistan, IRD led a $ 400 million three-year road construction project in the southern and eastern provinces of the country.

Many problems were identified in the IRD’s agricultural work in Afghanistan, requiring $ 300 million to be spent to aid farmers in Kandahar and Helmand provinces. Many goods for farmers were sold in Pakistan and distorted the local market. Afghan officials ridiculed features of the program, such as paying farmers for work they would do anyway. In June 2020, the company was sued for bribes or money to protect the Taliban in a lawsuit filed by the families of American victims. During his lucrative work in Afghanistan, Blumont (then the IRD) may have violated the Anti-Terrorism Act, which prohibits individuals or entities from providing material support to the Taliban.

Balkans

In 2001, IRD was one of five NGOs selected by USAID to implement the Community Development through Democratic Action (CRDA) Program in Serbia. The program cost US taxpayers $ 200 million and ran from 2001 to 2006. The program was aimed at increasing civic participation in democratic institutions; provide vocational training; to increase the size of the local economy through grants, workshops and consultations.

Colombia

Also in Puerto Torres, Blumont contributed resources to create a community structure, tools and sports equipment for use in community gatherings and educational events.

Indonesia

IRD’s first major project was a food aid program in Indonesia, which one source described as groundbreaking.Funded by US taxpayers, IRD took wheat donated by USAID and distributed it to noodle factories to boost production and lower prices. IRD provided logistical and management support and was able to generate a portion of the profits from the sale of the noodles. These profits subsequently went towards further community reinvestment. The program has become a model for similar projects in Cambodia, Niger and Sri Lanka.

Iraq

In Iraq, USAID disbursed $ 644 million to implement the Community Stabilization Program, Jobs and Public Works Program in Iraq.Sometimes the IRD spent more than $ 1 million a day from USAID funds. During an inspection in March 2008, the USAID inspector general in Baghdad expressed concern that the rebels could withdraw millions of dollars. In July 2009, USAID suspended IRD’s Community Stabilization Program, citing evidence of phantom jobs in addition to possible financial support for the rebels.

IRD entered Iraq in 2003 as a Community Action Program (CAP) implementation partner.The aim of the program was to organize local communities and help them to prioritize and implement regional reconstruction projects. It was carefully modeled after the community stabilization programs in the Balkans, of which the IRD was a part.

A comprehensive audit of the program showed that although IRD met some of its stated objectives, the number of beneficiaries was overestimated. Completed IRD projects often did not meet the priority needs of the districts. Better oversight is needed to deal with frequent changes in implementation strategies due to volatile local situations.The program was extended twice in 2006 and 2008.

Like other organizations in Iraq, the IRD was unprepared for a deteriorating security situation, and several local council officials with whom it worked were killed. This has significantly increased the cost of security personnel and other administrative overheads to provide better control. In addition, many projects have been revised for faster results and are focused on only a few areas.

Jordan

In the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan, UNHCR and Blumont worked together with many international partners Refugee GIS, RefuGIS. RefuGIS is a project that uses hands-on mapping training to empower refugees in Zaatari with access to rich livelihoods and education. It is “the world’s first refugee GIS project created by refugees”.

In January 2018, Angelina Jolie visited the Zaatari camp to attend the TIGER (These Inspirational Girls Love to Read) project, which focuses on education and empowerment in displacement.A UNHCR project in partnership with IRD / Blumont aims to combat the epidemic of high school dropouts. In February 2018, Peace and Sport announced new peace-building activities at Camp Zaatari, which were launched in collaboration with IRD / Blumont, UNHCR, International Table Tennis Federation, International Tekball Federation and World Association Kickboxing organizations.Activities include workshops on sports trainers for refugees, as well as work with the Zaatar Women’s Commission and TIGER girls to promote the program and spread “the values ​​of peace and gender equality through sports”.

Mali

In Mali, IRD / Blumont, under the DFID BRACED program, is implementing the Wati Yelema Labenw program to improve the resilience of vulnerable populations in Koulikoro, Segou and Mopti to climate disasters.Through work on social cohesion, livelihoods, management and natural resource management, the program directly reaches 2,400 people and builds on the results of the previous RIC4REC (Strengthening Community Climate Resilience Initiatives) project.

Pakistan

Blumont and a partner organization are implementing the USAID-funded Sindh Community Mobilization Program (CMP) as part of the Sindh Basic Education Program of USAID and the Sindh Provincial Government.The five-year program operates in Khairpur, Sukkur, Larkan, Dadu, Camber Shahdadkot, Jacobabad and Kashmore, as well as five cities in Karachi. The program uses community mobilization to work to increase the number of girls in school and improve the health and hygiene of children.

Palestine

Prof Davidson’s armchair diagnosis is no.He cites debate among psychiatrists internationally as to whether narcissism – a trait so often attributed to the current president – is even a bona fide personality disorder.
But Nassir Ghaemi – author of A First-Rate Madness: Uncovering the Links Between Leadership and Mental Illness – believes President Trump has “classic manic symptoms”.
The professor of psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston says: “He doesn’t sleep much at all. He has a very high physical energy level.
“He’s very impulsive with spending, sexually impulsive, he can’t concentrate.”His traits were most beneficial for him during the presidential campaign, where he was extremely creative.
“He was able to pick up on things that normal, mentally healthy, stable persons, like Hillary Clinton, for instance, did not.”
The Trump presidency, we are so often told, has shattered historic norms.
But the strange and troubled lives of previous commanders-in-chief seem to raise the question, what is normal?
