What players comprise the Duke Blue Devils’ 2020-21 men’s basketball roster. How does the team’s composition compare to previous seasons. What are the key strengths and potential challenges for this roster.
Duke’s 2020-21 Roster: A Blend of Fresh Talent and Returning Experience
The Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball program has finalized its roster for the 2020-21 season, presenting a compelling mix of highly-touted freshmen and seasoned veterans. This lineup, crafted by legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski, aims to reclaim Duke’s position at the pinnacle of college basketball after an abrupt end to the 2019-20 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The roster breakdown is as follows:
- Freshmen: 7 (including 5 scholarship players and 2 walk-ons)
- Sophomores: 4
- Juniors: 1
- Seniors: 2
- Graduate Students: 1
This composition reflects a significant influx of new talent, balanced by the presence of returning players who will be crucial in maintaining team chemistry and adapting to the rigors of ACC competition.
Freshman Phenoms: Duke’s Stellar Recruiting Class
Duke’s 2020 recruiting class is nothing short of exceptional, featuring multiple five-star prospects and high-ranking four-star recruits. The freshman cohort includes:
- Jalen Johnson (SF, Five-Star)
- Jeremy Roach (PG, Five-Star)
- D.J. Steward (SG, Five-Star)
- Jaemyn Brakefield (PF, Five-Star)
- Mark Williams (C, Four-Star)
- Henry Coleman III (PF, Four-Star)
- Cason Pierce (PF, Walk-On)
How will these freshmen impact Duke’s playing style? The versatility and athleticism of this group suggest that Coach K may employ a more up-tempo, positionless style of play. Johnson’s ability to play multiple positions, Roach’s court vision, and Steward’s scoring prowess could form the backbone of a dynamic offense.
Returning Players: The Foundation of Duke’s Success
While the freshmen bring excitement, the returning players will be crucial for Duke’s success. Key returnees include:
- Matthew Hurt (So, PF)
- Wendell Moore (So, SF)
- Joey Baker (Jr, PF)
- Jordan Goldwire (Sr, PG)
Hurt and Moore, in particular, will be expected to take significant leaps in their sophomore seasons. Hurt’s shooting ability and improved strength could make him a focal point of the offense, while Moore’s defensive versatility and playmaking skills will be valuable assets.
The Importance of Senior Leadership
Jordan Goldwire enters his senior year as one of the team’s most experienced players. His defensive intensity and improved shooting make him a potential starter or key reserve. Mike Buckmire, another senior guard, provides depth and leadership off the bench.
Graduate Transfer Bolsters the Frontcourt
In a notable move, Duke secured the commitment of graduate transfer Patrick Tape from Columbia. Tape’s journey to Duke was unconventional, involving a commitment, de-commitment, and re-commitment. What does Tape bring to the Blue Devils?
At 6’10” and 232 pounds, Tape provides much-needed size and experience in the frontcourt. His ability to protect the rim and finish around the basket could prove invaluable, especially given the departure of Vernon Carey Jr. to the NBA.
Departures and Their Impact
Duke saw several key players depart after the 2019-20 season:
- Tre Jones (NBA Draft)
- Vernon Carey Jr. (NBA Draft)
- Cassius Stanley (NBA Draft)
- Alex O’Connell (Transfer)
How will Duke compensate for these losses? The departures of Jones, Carey, and Stanley leave significant voids in scoring and leadership. However, the incoming freshman class and the expected development of returning players like Hurt and Moore could potentially offset these losses.
Projected Lineup and Rotations
While the starting lineup will likely evolve throughout the season, a potential starting five could look like this:
- PG: Jeremy Roach
- SG: D.J. Steward
- SF: Jalen Johnson
- PF: Matthew Hurt
- C: Mark Williams
This lineup offers a blend of playmaking, shooting, and athleticism. Jordan Goldwire, Wendell Moore, and Patrick Tape could be the first players off the bench, providing defensive intensity and experience.
Versatility: Duke’s X-Factor
One of the most intriguing aspects of this roster is its versatility. Players like Johnson, Moore, and Brakefield can play multiple positions, allowing Coach K to experiment with various lineups. This flexibility could prove crucial in adapting to different opponents and game situations.
Strengths and Potential Challenges
What are the key strengths of this Duke roster? The combination of high-level freshman talent and returning experience stands out. The team’s versatility and potential for explosive offense could make them a formidable opponent.
However, potential challenges include:
- Lack of proven collegiate scorers
- Reliance on freshmen in key roles
- Potential defensive inconsistencies
How Coach K addresses these challenges will be crucial to Duke’s success in the 2020-21 season.
ACC Outlook and National Championship Aspirations
Given the talent on this roster, Duke will likely enter the season as one of the favorites to win the ACC. Their national championship aspirations will depend on how quickly the freshmen adapt to the college game and how effectively the team can forge its identity.
Can this Duke team reclaim the ACC crown and make a deep run in the NCAA tournament? The potential is certainly there, but as with any young team, consistency will be key.
Key Games to Watch
While the full schedule is yet to be released, Duke fans should mark their calendars for matchups against perennial ACC rivals like North Carolina, Virginia, and Louisville. Non-conference games against high-profile opponents will also provide early tests for this young Blue Devils squad.
The 2020-21 season promises to be an exciting one for Duke basketball. With a blend of elite freshman talent and experienced returners, the Blue Devils have the potential to be one of the most dynamic teams in college basketball. As always, the key will be how well Coach K can mold this group into a cohesive unit capable of competing at the highest level.
As the season approaches, all eyes will be on Durham to see how this talented roster comes together. Will the Blue Devils live up to their potential and add another chapter to Duke’s storied basketball history? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: it’s going to be an exciting journey for Duke fans and college basketball enthusiasts alike.

With Patrick Tape signing to transfer from Columbia to Duke on April 18th, Duke Basketball’s 2020-21 roster is officially final; here’s what it looks like.
Duke basketball had a rather interesting start to their offseason following both the ACC and NCAA tournaments being canceled, ending their season. In the following weeks, Duke would first lose star point guard and 2019-20 ACC Player of the Year, Tre Jones to the draft, then Alex O’Connell announced his intentions to transfer, then they got a commitment from Patrick Tape, then a de-commitment from Patrick Tape and then a recommitment from Patrick Tape.
After that, Cassius Stanley announced he would be going to the NBA Draft, to the surprise of some and Vernon Carey jr. announced the same, to the surprise of nobody. With the exception of Jones, O’Connell, Stanley and Carey, Duke will retain all of their players from the 2019-20 squad with the additions of several star freshmen and a transfer for the first time since 2014.

With all that being said, here is Duke’s official and finalized roster for the 2020-21 season:
- Jalen Johnson, Fr, SF, Five-Star
- Jeremy Roach, Fr, PG, Five-Star
- D.J. Steward, Fr, SG, Five-Star
- Jaemyn Brakefield, Fr, PF, Five-Star
- Mark Williams, Fr, C, Four-Star
- Henry Coleman III, Fr, PF, Four-Star
- Cason Pierce, Fr, PF, Walk-On
- Matthew Hurt, So, PF
- Wendell Moore, So, SF
- Keenan Worthington, So, PF
- Michael Savarino, So, PG
- Joey Baker, Jr, PF
- Jordan Goldwire, Sr, PG
- Mike Buckmire, Sr, PG
- Patrick Tape, Grad-Student, C
This is a roster with a ton of star-power on it and it’s a roster that could very well win the ACC Tournament, reclaiming their crown that they didn’t have the chance to claim in 2020.
This is also a team with senior leadership in Jordan Goldwire which is very, very valuable for such a young team like this one. Goldwire will likely be one of three captains, the other two being Mike Buckmire and Joey Baker, I also wouldn’t be that surprised if someone like Wendell Moore is named a captain as well.
Overall, Duke is set to have a very talented roster for the 2020-21 season and they will likely be the favorites to win the ACC as well. As for what the depth chart will look like, I’ll have more on that in the coming weeks with in-depth looks at each position and the starting rotation as a whole.

The Duke / The Duke (2020, film) This is good old England. Money for pensioners is a pity, but for the painting by Goya, the Duke of Wellington, 140 thousand is not a pity. What kind of comedy is this that makes you want to cry?
“Duke” – a film about the life of a simple English pensioner who decided to go against the system. It would be funny if it weren’t so sad. Because the old man’s idea is obviously useless. By the way, based on real events.

Briefly about the film: started with TV, finished with paintings. And to be honest, “The Duke” touches on very serious issues. What is more important – the needs of the common people (who work hard from morning till night and keep the country’s economy on their shoulders) or an object of art (collecting dust in a museum)?

CHARACTERS.
The main character is an elderly man. He writes plays, and judging by his manner they will express themselves, quite tolerable and not banal. But no one is in a hurry to put them on. Because of his straightforwardness and heightened sense of justice (likes to download rights), he often finds himself in trouble.
jim broadbent
His wife works as an assistant (cleaner) in the house of a wealthy family. She is patient, silent, but some antics of her husband and her are brought to a nervous breakdown.
helen mirren
Their son repairs and resells boats. Strive to earn honestly, unlike his older brother, who had already dragged him into an adventure once.
The Duke film
And there is also a portrait of the Duke of Wellington, painted by artist Francisco Goya. After some delving into the history, the American mission insists that the painting belongs to the United States by law. And England, in order to keep a rarity, fork out for 140 thousand pounds. With this news, a wave of indignation of the protagonist begins. The picture can be considered as a separate character.
The Duke of Wellington
CAST for this movie was cast from people who I didn’t really like in other roles, but in “The Duke” they were very appropriate. With Jim Broadbent, at some point in his career, it seemed like he started acting in roles that didn’t suit him. As if his name is only for a well-known name among fans of British cinema. However, now he extremely convincingly conveyed the throwing of a talented, but extravagant pensioner. Moreover, he looks like a real prototype of the hero. Helen Mirren is a little tired of the images of femme fatales. Immediately she portrayed the role of a sweet and very reasonable aunt, even more like a grandmother.
hellen mirren
The actor who played their son used to be a skinny guy with a maniac look. Somewhere his sinister charm has disappeared, now he is a simple hard worker without any terrible thoughts. And Matthew Goode was involved in a short episodic role of an intelligent lawyer. In this form, he could play Heinrich Eisenstein (also a lawyer) in The Bat.

IMPRESSIONS:
- The film has the fact that the life of an ordinary working-class family is shown. Honestly, it’s already cloying from all these dramas about aristocrats and their problems. Here people actually wash the toilets, walk around in leaky sweaters and consider it the height of happiness if they go out for a walk in the evening and drink a bottle of beer.
duke reviews
- The picture is gloomy and can scare someone away. Cloudy streets, faded wallpaper in the rooms, clothes in gray tones. No filters were used to enhance the color in order to convey the oppressive atmosphere more strongly. Sometimes inserts are made from the old chronicle for that time.

old footage
- An important theme of the film “The Duke” is television and its importance in the life of the working class. What an aristocrat – they do nothing all day, and in the evening they run cheerfully to a restaurant or to visit someone. But when a worker returns home after a shift, there is no question of going to an entertainment establishment. He is so tired that he can only crawl to the sofa or chair. But you still want entertainment. Therefore, TV comes to the rescue – the only outlet after hard everyday life. But you have to pay for it too. Not only in the sense of buying, but also then spending money on using it.
duke
- I have heard before that in England there is some kind of tax on TV and some channels. Black and white is cheaper, color is more expensive. Therefore, some Britons still do not throw out old, non-color televisions. But the fact that a special service can detect a Singhalese, stick to some citizen in the house and demand a license to watch TV from him or put him in jail is, of course, news. And also, according to the movie “The Duke”, at that time in Britain there was capital punishment, for example, for stealing a car.
TV
- In general, it is bitter to see how the situation is presented in a comic and comic way. This is the same drama about the helplessness and lack of rights of a person in front of the system. Okay, let’s forget about the ill-fated tax that started it all for a while. But just think about the situations for which the main character was pushed out from different jobs – he verbally stood up for a colleague or the daily income did not coincide with the mileage by 3 kopecks (this is the 60s, there were no GPS tracking and fuel control systems yet).
- In addition, there were sad events in the family of the protagonist. It is shown how some tried to take their will into a fist and continue to work, some even forgot, and some still blamed themselves for what happened.
- The extravagant antics of the characters are annoying. If you know what strict penalties are in your country, why are you bothering to break the laws. In the same place, it is already clear that it is pointless to go against the system. But all the same, the heroes want to take risks and brag about themselves.
the duke
One would believe that such excitement would be approved in America, but certainly not in stiff England. With one cost, still easily got off. But then the second went to confess his guilt, for which the other had already been acquitted. And if not for a ride. What did this scam change as a result? At the end, they will write “in the year 2000, people over 75 were allowed not to pay tax on TV.” This is approximately 40 years after the events shown in the film. It’s just to fuck up, as soon as “joyfully and warmly” it became in my soul.
THE DUKE is a controversial film. On the one hand, this is a non-standard plot, excellent acting and a very subtly recreated atmosphere of the 60s. But at the same time, jokes from hopelessness, the state system of which should be ashamed, and the stupid antics of the heroes on the verge of mental hysteria. Much in this movie was not to my liking, but still I will put 4 stars, it was so filmed and played better than what is usually released on screens now.

Harry, youngest son of Charles, Prince of Wales ( since 2022 King Charles III ) and his first wife, Princess Diana, was born on September 15, 1984 in Lonon, at St. Mary’s Hospital in London. The grandson of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain and the great-great-grandson of the Queen of the Hellenes Olga Konstantinovna, through whom he is related to the Russian House of Romanov. He is fifth in the order of succession to the throne. 31 August 1997, when Harry was 12, his mother died in a car accident.

Later, in 2006, together with Seeiso, Prince of Lesotho, he created the Sentebale Foundation to help these children.
In May 2005, Harry entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, successfully completed a 44-week training course, and on April 12, 2006, with the rank of second lieutenant, was sent to the Royal Horse Guards.

From December 2007 to February 2008 he served in Afghanistan in the province of Helmand as part of the British contingent of the international coalition. He was an aviation pilot. Activities as a senior member of the royal family
Until January 2020, Prince Harry and his wife held a number of duties as senior members of the royal family. This is a royal couple, their children with spouses and older grandchildren (there is no official list and definition). These persons, as representatives of the Queen, must be present at various ceremonies, charity and other events. Their activities in this capacity are paid from a sovereign grant that the Queen receives (it is 15% of the income of the independent organization Crown Estate, which manages the property of the crown; according to the results of 2019-Fiscal year 2020 grant amounted to £82. 2 million; $105 million). In particular, Prince Harry received 5% of the sovereign grant, as well as funds from the investment fund of Prince Charles The Prince’s Trust (the amount is not advertised).
Prince Harry was the official British team ambassador for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games (helped raise public interest in the Games), represented the Queen at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. continents).
In 2016, when Elizabeth II withdrew from her patronage over a number of organizations, some of them came under the patronage of Harry. These include Rugby Union (until February 2021).
In December 2017, the Queen approved his appointment as Captain General of the Royal Marines to replace the Duke of Edinburgh, who had retired from official duties. In 2020, he was stripped of this title.
In November 2018, according to a poll by sociological company YouGov (“Yu-Gav”), the prince was recognized as the most popular member of the royal family.
Renunciation of the powers of a senior member of the royal family
The British media have repeatedly sharply criticized Meghan Markle, including for non-compliance with etiquette and manner of dressing (jeans, flashy jewelry, etc. ). In October 2019, Prince Harry sued the owners of the newspapers The Sun and the Daily Mirror, accusing their employees of illegally accessing voicemail messages. Meghan Markle has filed a lawsuit against the Mail On Sunday, which published her letter to her father. Against this background, shortly after the wedding, discord began between Prince Harry and the royal family. Yes, June 2019Harry and Meghan announced their desire to create their own charitable organization and, in this regard, leave the Royal Foundation (headed by Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton), and in September they turned down an offer to visit Balmoral Castle in Scotland, in where the Queen spends her summers. In a break with tradition, they celebrated Christmas separately from the Queen.
On January 8, 2020, Prince Harry and his wife announced on their Instagram account that they intend to “step down as senior members of the royal family and work towards becoming financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty the Queen. ” They announced plans to live alternately in the UK and North America (such a decision is unprecedented for members of the royal family). According to British media, Elizabeth II was disappointed that this statement was made without consulting her.
On January 18, Buckingham Palace announced that the couple will no longer be able to officially represent the Queen on official trips and events, they will be stripped of their title of Their Highnesses. At the same time, they will remain the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but will not be able to use the Sussex Royal brand (as their website and Instagram account were called). They will not receive funding from a sovereign grant. Behind them will be listed as a residence donated by the Queen Frogmore Cottage (near Windsor Castle). They will pay for its maintenance themselves, and they will also have to return 2.4 million pounds (3.1 million dollars) spent on rebuilding. The couple will be able to continue to exercise patronage over a number of organizations. Harry remains a prince and will not be removed from the list of heirs to the throne, but stripped of honorary military titles. All changes came into force on March 31, 2020. The Prince and his wife can return to their duties as senior members of the royal family at any time.
Activities since 2020
On January 21, Prince Harry left for Canada (his wife flew there on January 8), later the family settled in the USA (Santa Barbara, California).
Shortly after announcing her departure from the royal family, Meghan Markle signed with Disney to narrate a film about elephants (aired April 3).
On April 20, 2020, it became known that the couple had stopped working with the British publications Daily Mail, Sun, Delhi Mirror and Express. They will not receive news and photos from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their journalists will not receive invitations to events organized by the couple.
In July, the media reported that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle signed a contract with the New York company Harry Walker Agency, which organizes public speaking (with which they cooperate with Barack and Michelle Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton). It is indicated that Harry or Meghan for a speech at any event will be able to receive up to 1 million pounds (1.2 million dollars). The press later revealed that the couple had signed contracts with US streaming service Netflix to produce documentaries, feature films, plays and programs for children, and Swedish audio streaming service Spotify for a total of $19.$0 million. In the spring of 2021, the American media wrote that Prince Harry received a position in the leadership of the American company BetterUp, which teaches the skills necessary for career growth. He will be involved in including the development of plans to achieve business goals and charitable programs. In addition, he joined the commission formed by the Aspen Institute to combat disinformation in the media and other areas of US public life. In June 2021, Meghan Markle released The Bench, a book for children about the relationship between father and son, and also voiced its audio version.
In March 2021, the American CBS and British ITV broadcast a resonant interview with the spouses of the famous TV presenter Oprah Winfrey, in which they spoke about the “lack of understanding” and moral support from the royal family during their life in palace. So, according to Markle, she became the victim of a “real smear campaign”, and during pregnancy, due to the pressure exerted by the media and social networks, she “simply did not want to live anymore.” She spoke about “racist” conversations among new relatives, during which they discussed “how dark the skin” of her child “can be” and whether he should be given a “title and protection. “According to polls, 47% of Britons believe that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle behaved inappropriately, and only 21% approved of them In May, the British newspaper The Times published new criticisms of Prince Harry about the royal family from the Armchair Expert podcast. Prince Charles, therefore, it is necessary to “break the cycle” of the genetic transmission of “pain and suffering.”
On April 14, 2022, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle met Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain for the first time after a scandalous interview on American television. The couple visited the royal residence in Windsor, located in Berkshire, about 40 km from London, where they also talked with the heir to the throne, Prince Charles of Wales. This was their first joint visit to the UK since March 2020, when they announced they were relinquishing senior royal status. Prince Harry and Markle visited Windsor Castle on their way to The Hague for the Invincible Games, a sporting event involving former and current servicemen who have become disabled.
In September 2022, Harry and his wife attended the funeral of Elizabeth II (who died on September 8).
In January 2023, Prince Harry’s autobiography, The Spare One, co-authored with American writer John Joseph Moringer, went on sale. In the first day alone, more than 1.43 million copies of the book were sold. According to the publishers, this made it the fastest-selling non-fiction work in history. As British media previously reported, the prince’s fee was $ 20 million. The book received a scandalous reputation due to the revelations of Prince Harry, including those concerning the British royal family. In the book, the Duke of Sussex, who calls himself a minor family member – “spare” – talks in detail about the details of his personal life, about how he killed 25 people while serving in Afghanistan, as well as about conflicts in the family.
