How did the Peterborough Lakers secure their record-breaking 18th Mann Cup title. What were the key moments in their 13-9 win over the Langley Thunder. Who were the standout players in this historic lacrosse championship game.
Lakers Triumph in Epic Mann Cup Showdown
On September 17, 2022, the Peterborough Century 21 Lakers etched their name in lacrosse history by clinching their fourth consecutive Mann Cup title. In a nail-biting Game 7 at the Peterborough Memorial Centre, the Lakers emerged victorious with a 13-9 win over the Langley Thunder, cementing their status as the most successful franchise in the Mann Cup’s 91-year box lacrosse era.
This monumental victory not only matched the record set by the 1951-54 Peterborough Timbermen/Trailerman but also propelled the Lakers past the New Westminster Salmonbellies with an unprecedented 18th Mann Cup title. The win was made even more special as it coincided with the 150th anniversary of lacrosse in Peterborough.
Game-Changing Third Period Performance
The Lakers’ path to victory was far from smooth. After a closely contested first two periods that saw the teams tied at 9-9, the Lakers unleashed a devastating offensive onslaught in the final 20 minutes. Thomas Hoggarth broke the deadlock just 2:07 into the third period, igniting a trio of goals within a span of 2:15 that gave the Lakers a commanding 12-9 lead.
What factors contributed to the Lakers’ dominant third-period performance? The team’s ability to maintain composure under pressure, coupled with their strategic offensive plays, proved crucial. Goaltender Matt Vinc’s flawless performance in the final period, shutting out the Thunder, was instrumental in sealing the victory.
Overcoming Adversity: Key Player Absences and Returns
The Lakers’ championship run was not without its challenges. The team had to navigate the absence of Shawn Evans, the all-time Mann Cup scoring leader, who was sidelined due to an ankle sprain sustained in Game 6. However, the return of Turner Evans to the lineup after a five-game absence due to a broken rib provided a much-needed boost.
Thomas Hoggarth’s comeback from a shoulder injury that kept him out of Game 6 exemplified the team’s resilience. His decision to play through the pain in the decisive Game 7 underscored the Lakers’ determination to secure the championship.
Hoggarth’s Heroic Return
Hoggarth’s return to the lineup proved pivotal. His goal early in the third period sparked the Lakers’ game-winning rally. “Seeing that Shawnie went out and knowing we were missing a righty on the one side, I felt I needed to step up,” Hoggarth remarked, highlighting the team’s collective spirit and adaptability in the face of adversity.
Stellar Performances: Cattoni and Dickson Shine
The championship series showcased exceptional individual performances that will be remembered for years to come. Holden Cattoni emerged as the Lakers’ offensive powerhouse, leading all scorers in Game 7 with three goals and nine points. His outstanding play throughout the series, amassing 20 goals and 43 points, earned him the prestigious Game Star Award.
On the Thunder’s side, Curtis Dickson’s remarkable performance did not go unnoticed. Despite facing his former Lakers teammates, Dickson secured the Mike Kelley Award as the series MVP, tallying an impressive 18 goals, 24 assists, and 42 points, including five points in the final game.
Cattoni’s Record-Tying Achievement
Cattoni’s 43 points in the series tied the record set by Dane Dobbie, further solidifying his place among lacrosse’s elite players. His consistent scoring threat throughout the championship run played a crucial role in the Lakers’ success.
Goaltending Brilliance: Matt Vinc’s Clutch Performance
Matt Vinc’s stellar goaltending was a cornerstone of the Lakers’ victory. His flawless third-period performance, during which he stopped all 10 Thunder shots, was instrumental in preserving the Lakers’ lead and securing the championship.
How significant was Vinc’s contribution to the Lakers’ success? His fourth Mann Cup victory, all with Peterborough, underscores his importance to the team. Vinc’s ability to make crucial saves in high-pressure situations has been a defining factor in the Lakers’ championship runs.
The Thunder’s Valiant Effort
While the night belonged to the Lakers, the Langley Thunder’s performance throughout the series and in Game 7 deserves recognition. The Thunder’s resilience was evident as they fought back from an early deficit to tie the game at 9-9 after two periods.
Connor Robinson and Robert Church were standout performers for the Thunder, with Church’s power-play goal late in the first period keeping Langley within striking distance. The Thunder’s ability to mount a comeback and push the series to a decisive Game 7 speaks volumes about their competitive spirit and skill.
Dickson’s Bittersweet MVP Honor
Curtis Dickson’s MVP performance for the Thunder was a testament to his exceptional skill and leadership. However, the personal accolade was overshadowed by the team’s narrow defeat. “It’s something I’ll look back on later in my career and be proud of,” Dickson reflected, “but at a time like this I don’t take any consolation in (the award). We came here for one reason and coming as close as we did and not achieving our goal is heartbreaking.”
The Impact of Home Advantage
The Lakers’ victory extended their impressive home record in Mann Cup play to 11-0. The electrifying atmosphere created by the 3,941 spectators at the Peterborough Memorial Centre played a significant role in fueling the team’s performance.
How does the home advantage affect the Lakers’ play? The familiar surroundings, coupled with the unwavering support of their passionate fans, create an environment where the Lakers thrive under pressure. This home-ice advantage has been a crucial factor in their sustained success in Mann Cup competitions.
Legacy and Future Prospects
The Lakers’ fourth consecutive Mann Cup victory cements their legacy as one of the greatest dynasties in lacrosse history. This achievement is particularly remarkable considering the three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
What does this historic win mean for the future of the Peterborough Lakers? The team’s continued success and ability to overcome challenges position them as favorites for future Mann Cup competitions. Their blend of experienced veterans and emerging talent suggests that the Lakers’ dynasty may continue to grow in the coming years.
Building on a Winning Culture
The Lakers’ success is built on a foundation of team cohesion and a winning culture that has been cultivated over years. As Holden Cattoni noted, “The core of our team has been together for the four Mann Cups in a row. It’s so special getting to play with these guys each and every year. Playing here, there is nothing like it. I feel very blessed.”
This sense of continuity and shared experience has created a team that performs at its best when the stakes are highest. The Lakers’ ability to maintain this core group of players and integrate new talent will be crucial for their continued success.
The Significance of the Mann Cup in Canadian Lacrosse
The Mann Cup holds a special place in Canadian lacrosse, representing the pinnacle of achievement in the sport. As the championship trophy of senior men’s box lacrosse, it carries a rich history dating back to 1910 when it was first awarded.
Why is winning the Mann Cup considered the ultimate goal for Canadian lacrosse teams? The trophy’s prestige, combined with its long-standing tradition, makes it a coveted prize that represents excellence in the sport. For players and teams, hoisting the Mann Cup is the culmination of years of dedication and hard work.
The Evolution of the Mann Cup
Since its inception, the Mann Cup has evolved alongside the sport of lacrosse. The transition to the box lacrosse era in 1932 marked a significant shift in the competition’s format and style of play. The Lakers’ dominance in this modern era of the Mann Cup speaks to their ability to adapt and excel as the sport has evolved.
The Mann Cup’s significance extends beyond the realm of sports, serving as a cultural touchstone that connects communities and generations of lacrosse enthusiasts across Canada. The Lakers’ success in this prestigious competition has not only brought glory to Peterborough but has also contributed to the rich tapestry of Canadian lacrosse history.
The Role of Coaching and Strategy
While the players’ performances on the field rightfully take center stage, the role of coaching and strategic planning in the Lakers’ success cannot be overstated. The team’s ability to adapt to the loss of key players and make crucial adjustments during the game speaks to the effectiveness of their coaching staff.
How do coaching decisions impact the outcome of high-stakes games like the Mann Cup final? In Game 7, the Lakers’ coaching staff made several key decisions, including the deployment of players returning from injury and the tactical adjustments that led to the team’s dominant third-period performance.
In-Game Adjustments
The Lakers’ ability to overcome a tied score after two periods and dominate the final frame demonstrates the coaching staff’s skill in making effective in-game adjustments. These strategic changes, coupled with the players’ execution, proved decisive in securing the championship.
The development of young talent and the integration of new players into the team’s system are also critical aspects of the coaching staff’s responsibilities. The Lakers’ sustained success over multiple seasons is a testament to their ability to maintain a high level of performance while continuously evolving their roster and tactics.
The Economic and Cultural Impact of Lacrosse in Peterborough
The Lakers’ success extends beyond the confines of the lacrosse arena, having a significant impact on the city of Peterborough itself. As a cornerstone of the community’s sporting culture, the team’s achievements resonate throughout the region, fostering civic pride and unity.
What economic benefits does a successful lacrosse franchise bring to a city like Peterborough? The Lakers’ home games, particularly during championship runs, draw thousands of spectators to the Peterborough Memorial Centre, generating revenue for local businesses and contributing to the city’s economy.
Lacrosse as a Cultural Institution
In Peterborough, lacrosse is more than just a sport; it’s a cultural institution that has been woven into the fabric of the community for generations. The Lakers’ success serves to strengthen this connection, inspiring young athletes and maintaining the city’s reputation as a lacrosse powerhouse.
The team’s impact on youth lacrosse programs in the area cannot be understated. The Lakers’ players often serve as role models and mentors, contributing to the development of the next generation of lacrosse talent in Peterborough and beyond.
The Future of Box Lacrosse in Canada
The Lakers’ continued success comes at a time when box lacrosse is experiencing growth and increased visibility across Canada. As one of the sport’s premier franchises, the Lakers play a crucial role in shaping the future of box lacrosse in the country.
How might the Lakers’ dynasty influence the development of box lacrosse in Canada? Their sustained excellence sets a high standard for other teams to aspire to, potentially driving improvements in player development, coaching, and organizational structures across the league.
Expanding the Sport’s Reach
The excitement generated by high-stakes competitions like the Mann Cup has the potential to attract new fans and participants to the sport. As box lacrosse continues to grow, the Lakers’ success story serves as a powerful narrative that can help promote the sport to a wider audience.
The increasing professionalization of box lacrosse, coupled with growing media coverage, may lead to new opportunities for players, coaches, and teams. The Lakers’ model of success could serve as a blueprint for other organizations looking to build sustainable, championship-caliber programs.
Celebrating Lacrosse’s Rich History
The Lakers’ Mann Cup victory in 2022 coincided with the 150th anniversary of lacrosse in Peterborough, providing a fitting celebration of the sport’s deep roots in the community. This milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of lacrosse and its enduring significance in Canadian sports culture.
How has lacrosse in Peterborough evolved over the past 150 years? From its origins as a traditional Indigenous game to its current status as a modern, fast-paced sport, lacrosse has undergone significant changes while maintaining its core elements of skill, strategy, and athleticism.
Honoring Indigenous Heritage
The celebration of lacrosse’s history in Peterborough also provides an opportunity to honor the Indigenous origins of the sport. Known as the “Creator’s Game” in many Indigenous cultures, lacrosse holds deep spiritual and cultural significance that extends far beyond its modern competitive form.
By acknowledging and celebrating this rich heritage, the Lakers and the broader lacrosse community in Peterborough contribute to the ongoing process of reconciliation and cultural appreciation. The team’s success serves as a bridge between the sport’s ancient roots and its thriving present, ensuring that the legacy of lacrosse continues to be honored and preserved for future generations.

In the 150th anniversary year of lacrosse in the city, the Peterborough Century 21 Lakers became the winningest franchise in the Mann Cup’s 91-year box lacrosse era.
The Lakers matched the 1951-54 Peterborough Timbermen/Trailerman as the only team to win four consecutive Mann Cups, thrilling 3,941 Memorial Centre spectators with a 13-9 win over the Langley Thunder in a dramatic Game 7 on Saturday night.
The Lakers also surpassed the New Westminster Salmonbellies with an 18th Mann Cup title, the most of any team since the 1932 box lacrosse era began. Peterborough also improved to 11-0 when hosting the Mann Cup.
Tied at 9-9 after 40 minutes, Thomas Hoggarth faked out goalie Frank Scigliano 2:07 into the third, touching off three goals 2:15 apart for a 12-9 lead.
Goalie Matt Vinc shut out the Thunder in the final 20 minutes, setting off the celebrations.
The Lakers had waited three years for the opportunity to win a fourth straight after COVID-19 cancelled the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
The Lakers were forced to play without all-time Mann Cup scoring leader Shawn Evans who sprained his ankle in Game 6 and after testing it in warm-up was unable to play. His cousin Turner Evans returned to the lineup after missing five games with a broken rib.
Hoggarth returned after missing Game 6 to a shoulder injury and wouldn’t have played if it were not Game 7.
“Seeing that Shawnie went out and knowing we were missing a righty on the one side I felt I needed to step up,” Hoggarth said.
“Before the game we knew what we were chasing and we had to settle down. In the second period we lost it a bit but in the third we came out flying and knew what we had to do. Everyone in that dressing room believed in each other and that goes right back to 2017 when we won our first one.”
It’s Vinc’s fourth Mann Cup, all in Peterborough, and he earned it stopping all 10 Thunder shots in the third.
“It’s unbelievable to win at any moment but the way we did it means a lot,” said Vinc. “The D shut them down in the third. It’s tough to win in the east especially in Peterborough with our fans. Us scoring first just build that momentum and it’s one of those moments you’ll never forget”
Holden Cattoni led all scorers on the night — three goals and nine points — to win the Game Star Award and through the series with 20 goals and 43 points, tying Dane Dobbie.
“The core of our team has been together for the four Mann Cups in a row,” Cattoni said. “It’s so special getting to play with these guys each and every year. Playing here, there is nothing like it. I feel very blessed.”
Curtis Dickson, who lost to his former Lakers teammates for a second time, won the Mike Kelley Award as series MVP with 18 goals, 24 assists and 42 points, including five points in Game 7.
“It’s something I’ll look back on later in my career and be proud of,” Dickson said, “but at a time like this I don’t take any consolation in (the award). We came here for one reason and coming as close as we did and not achieving our goal is heartbreaking. Looking at all the guys faces in our room just now it’s tough because we came so close.”
For the sixth time in the series Langley opened the scoring when Connor Robinson tallied 80 seconds into the game.
Langley had seven of the game’s first eight shots but Cory Vitarelli quick-sticked a Joe Resetarits pass to tie it at 6:01.
The scoring then came fast and furious.
After being limited to four goals in Game 6, the Lakers had four by the 9:44 mark and led 7-3 by 13:31 after seven goals in a 7:30 span with Cattoni and Mark Matthews counting two each in the flurry. A Robert Church power play goal late in the period drew Langley within 7-5.
Matthews hat trick goal 24 seconds into the second was the game’s 13th goal, equalling the total of Langley’s 9-4 Game 6 win a night earlier.
Scigliano, who was replaced briefly in the first period, made five saves in one extended Lakers’ possession and Dickson responded on Langley’s next possession. Robinson scored on a power play and Church picked the top corner to tie it 8-8 at 14:19.
Dickson quieted the crowd with Langley’s fourth unanswered goal and a 9-8 lead 2:18 later. Vitarelli pounced on Cattoni’s rebound off the end boards to tie it at 18:46 and set up a dramatic third period.
