About Us

DICK’S Sporting Goods was founded in 1948 when an 18-year-old Dick Stack was working at an Army surplus store in Binghamton, New York. An avid fisherman, Dick was approached by the store owner to come up with a list of products needed to get into the fishing tackle business. After Dick presented his suggestions, the owner told him he was a dumb kid and had no idea what he was doing. Dick was upset and promptly quit. He went to his grandmother’s house where he spent a lot of time as a kid and told her what had happened.

Dick’s grandmother asked how much it would cost to build the store himself. Dick said it would cost $300. His grandmother then went to the cookie jar where she kept her life savings and gave him $300 and told him “do it yourself.” Dick used that money and his relentless work ethic to open a bait-and-tackle shop in Binghamton. By 1958, he expanded his product line to include much of what you’ll find at DICK’S Sporting Goods today.

Ed Stack, Dick’s son, is the current CEO and Chairman of DICK’S Sporting Goods. He and his siblings bought the store from their father and are responsible for taking two stores and growing the chain to over 675 stores.

In 1926, Harold S. Wagner, Senior Surveyor of Akron City Parks, was appointed as the first director-secretary of the fledgling parks district. During his formative years, Wagner worked in Boston with the Olmsted brothers, and then on projects owned by Seiberling. From the late 1920s to the late 1930s, over 1,000 acres were donated.Thanks to the generosity of thriving local landowners, the fledgling park system now includes 1,600 acres across five reservations. To finance projects to create parks and acquire land, voters in November 1928 levied a tax in the amount of 10 megacities.

Valley / North in Akron
Named after Sherman and Mary Schumacher, who donated 171 acres to metro parks in 1968, Schumacher Valley remains one of the harshest areas in Akron. In the valley, in the valley of the valley canyon, there are steep ravines pointing to a tributary of the Cuyahoga River. The canopy of oak, American beech, sassafras and black cherry provides shelter for small shrubs. In 1833, hydraulic engineer and entrepreneur Eliakim Crosby built the Cascade Race, a waterway that fed mills and factories along the canal Erie in Ohio. The cascade race helped turn Akron into a boom. Years later, Crosby built a failed Chakerie race with traces of it still visible in this metro park.Today the fish here are the prey of the girdled kingfisher and the great blue or green herons. A beautiful white trill grows in the floodplain of the forest every spring next to wild ginger and several species of violets. Summer and fall wildflowers also thrive, illuminating the landscape. Several rare and unique natural features can be found in the Chakeri area. South of the entrance, near the intersection of the Chakeri Trail, a meadow that harbors many unusual plants and several ostentatious wildflowers. Just up the hill from the prairie meadow, where wild lupins bloom around mid-May.Other rare species can be found individually throughout the park, including oil trees, a species surviving despite the oil canker disease threatening their range. Less visible but equally rare are wrinkled hairy grass, satin bromine, and southern hairy stone watercress.

Castles in Akron
Here along the Towing Trail, the Cascade Castles tell the story of Akron’s early industry.The steepest section of the Ohio Erie Canal was between Akron and the Little Cyahoga River. One mile, 15 locks, or “steps”, were needed for boats to climb the Continental Divide. Castles 10 through 16 form the Cascade Castles area. The two buildings north of the parking lot and next to Gate 15 are some of the oldest in Akron. Mustilla House and Shop, built between 1825 and 1850, served the local community and people traveling along the canal. The area was named a National Historic Site in 1992 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.Everywhere in the area there are native species of wild flowers, flowers brought by immigrants from Europe, and weeds carried by man, horse and boat along the canal. The tree population reflects both invasive plants and native trees that are able to thrive in urban environments. Birds found in the area include robins, blue jays, sparrows, cardinals, and red-tailed hawks.

Peninsula Castle Quarry
Deep Lock Quarry contains Castle 28, which at 17 feet was the deepest castle on the Ohio Erie Canal, and an old quarry from which blocks of Berea sandstone were carved for canal locks and others local structures.Ferdinand Schumacher, credited with introducing porridge to America by supplying it to Union troops during the Civil War, acquired part of the quarry in 1879. The sandstone found in the quarry was ideal for making millstones, which were used to remove the outer shells of oats processed at the American grain mill Akron (later “Quaker Oats”). The stone was last recovered from the quarry in the 1930s, when the Civilian Environmental Conservation Corps used the sandstone to build several subway facilities, including the Pioneer Shelter in the Goodyear Heights.The Deep Lock quarry became a subway park in 1934. Today, the park has more trees in Ohio than any other subway park in Summit County. The old channel is inhabited by frogs, turtles and salamanders. A shallow bog has developed at the bottom of the quarry, where a pink rose (grass) grows and an invasive narrow-leaved tail.

Dairy cows once grazed on the hillsides in what is now known as the Firestone Metropark.In 1949, the Underground received 89 acres of land from the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. The acquisition of the nearby plots expanded the park to 258 acres. In 1956, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources completed the construction of a nearby dam designed to create an industrial reservoir. As the reservoir of the adjacent Firestone Golf Course fills, the water level has risen downstream, forming large swampy and marshy meadows in Firestone Metro Park.Along with the Taskaravas River and the Taskaravas Race, which once funneled water into the Ohio Erie Canal, the area is home to fishermen, crayfish, frogs and turtles. The meadows and forests are home to foxes, coyotes, raccoons, skunks, muscrats, rabbits, mice, voles and moles, as well as many beautiful summer and autumn wildflowers. Over 175 bird species have been sighted at Firestone Metro Park, including various types of wrecks, blackbirds, warblers, woodpeckers, herons and ducks. Several different predators have also been sighted, including the bald eagle.Visitor’s Note – Poison Sumac is found in the humid areas of the Firestone Metro Park. Work in Richfield
890 acre Metropark was founded in 1929 when the family of Charles Francis Brash Jr. donated 272 acres to Metroparks.Much of the park was developed by worker aid teams during the 1930s. Lake Brushwood, once a popular swimming spot before erosion and sedimentation forced it to close in 1956, was created by diverting the natural stream of the Stove Passage. Every March and April, thousands of daffodils bloom along the HS Wagner Narcissus Trail. Wagner, the first director of Metropolitan Park, owned land off Brash Road and planted the first bulbs along the trail. After he retired in 1958, he sold the Metro Parks property and the land became part of Furnace Run Metro Park.Today, as you walk the Old Mill Trail, be sure to look for the Family Marker Brush that says, “To all those who love how they loved the distant sky and the smiling land.” To the south of Lake Brushwood is a recently restored section of the stream. The award-winning environmental project has recreated several thousand feet of habitat for aquatic animals and native fish, including a thriving population of rainbow darts, a sensitive species.
The park features beech forests, acres of spring wildflowers including Virginia trillium and blue bells, and deep ravines.Among the birds seen in the Pechnoy Run metro park, you can meet a variety of owls, hawks, herons, warblers and waterfowl. Downstream of the lake, wet forests of plane trees, black walnuts, willows and bushes greet the beaver family from time to time. The shrub lake is home to fish, frogs and other aquatic animals.

Akron Heights
Goodyear Heights Metro Park opened in 1930 after land was donated by Goodyear Tire Rubber to Akron and the district park acquired 37 acres from resident Gilbert Waltz. During the depression, Metro Parks acquired additional acres by paying offender taxes on surrounding property. In the 1950s, the Goodyear Tire Rubber Company donated more land. Thousands of pines and tulips have been planted in the park. During World War II, Victory Gardens were planted along Newton Street on the former Waltz farm.In 1957, the Charles Goodyear Memorial Pavilion was built. It served as the park district’s headquarters until 1974, when offices were relocated to Sand Run Metro Park. Today, the pines planted in this 410-acre park are gradually fading into black cherries, oaks and tulips through natural succession. Elsewhere there are beech trees, sugar maples, basswoods, mace oaks, red maples, and niello trees. In the north-central part, acidic soils support sassafras and sarsaparilla, species that were once used in beverage production.Along the edge of Alder Pond, the cat’s tail swamp provides a good habitat for wildlife. The pond supports sphagnum moss and yellow birches, muskrats, nesting Canadian geese and mallards. Late spring is a great time to view snapping turtles, some up to 20 pounds, soaking up the sun. Owls and other wild animals live in the forests of the park.

at Cuyahoga Falls
In 1759, a 12-year-old girl was captured in Pennsylvania by the Delaware Indians and reportedly taken to a cave in present-day Gorge Metro Park, where she lived as the child of Chief Netwatvis. Young Mary Campbell, after whom the cave is named, unwittingly became the first white child on the then wild border of the Western Reserve. Later, Mary settled with the tribe in a village along the banks of the Kuyahoga River, not far from the cave. She was released in 1764 after the conclusion of a treaty that ended the war between France and the Indians.Thousands of years before Mary’s adventures, the gorge was cut when ice debris blocked the former route of the Kuyahoga River (near present-day Akron city center) and forced the river to find a new channel. Today, turbulent water flows along the shale bed of the river, between the ledges made of sandstone of the Sharon conglomerate. In the forests covering the walls of the valley, oaks, chernozems, tulips and yellow birches are common. This 155-acre subway park was made possible in 1930 when the Northern Ohio Traction Light Company, Ohio Edison’s predecessor, donated 144 acres of land for subway parks.Previously, this area housed a different type of park – the High Bridge Glens Amusement Park, which opened in 1882 and featured a breathtaking roller coaster and dance hall. Akron Hills and Kayahoga Falls
In 1964, the city of Akron needed level ground on which to build a water tower.He leased 116 acres of woodland and ravines to the Metroparks in exchange for land within the Goodyear Heights Metropark. Three years later, Rhea H. and E. Reginald Adam donated 162 acres of adjacent farmland to the Metroparks, and the 278-acre Hampton Hills Metropolitan Park was born. In 2010, the park district signed a lease for the adjacent Hardy Road landfill, bringing the park to its current size of 655 acres. More than 10,000 years ago, glaciers retreated from northeastern Ohio, carving out ravines and valleys.An unusual plant called rush grows in the Adam Ran glacial valley, which lines the banks of the stream. The paths are lined with oaks, elms, plane trees and black walnut trees, which serve as a habitat for various birds and other wild animals. A grove of white pine, planted by the Girl Scouts in the late 1960s, offers visitors a cool, fragrant respite. Today, at the Top of the World, open fields contain euphorbia, iron ore, Queen Anne’s lace, goldenrocks and asters. game.In the European settlement, trees were cleared for farming, and maples spared sweet sap. Today, 1,759 acres of Liberty Park is a unique partnership between the city of Twinsburg and the parkland. The city operates a 100-acre recreational parkland, including playgrounds and playgrounds. Underground parks manage the remaining areas, including two trails and the Pond Brook Conservation Area. Both areas are open from 6 am to sunset. Large trees grow on rocky ledges and wetlands in the reserve, where swamps and swamps are “protected” by poisonous sumac and marsh rose.Metro parks have declared this area a low impact area, which means that mowing, trails and other park improvements will be kept to a minimum. Munro Falls
Before Metro Parks acquired 222 acres from the Renner family in 1978, John Renner owned and operated a swimming park here. In the 1930s, the family built a two-communal summer hut and dug a small fishing lake at the current entrance to the park. By 1935, they had built a house and lived here all year round, and they soon realized that their lake was popular with swimmers.To scare off visitors, they started charging 10 cents per visit, but this only attracted more people. To house the new business, they created the current 13-acre lake in 1937 and named the site Renner Park. John Renner, an engineer who built many homes in Akron’s Goodyear Heights, also tried to breed pigs on the southeast side of the lake. Price restrictions imposed during World War II made his agricultural enterprise unprofitable. In 2007, Metro Parks acquired the adjacent 287 acres of the former County Home property, bringing the park to now 509 acres.Today, the sandy, acidic soils of Munro Falls Metro Park allow for the growth of flora that is generally rare in Summit County. Blueberries, glistening club moss, land pines and Ohio hair moss colonies thrive here. Trees include black gum, sassafras, and tulip. Beavers, frogs, turtles, salamanders and crayfish are seen in the Beaver and Heron ponds.

Seiberling Nature Kingdom in Akron
Many parks exist thanks to the foresight of several forward-thinking people, including F.A. Seiberling. He donated over 400 acres to expand the Sand Run Metro Park. The land he owned from 1920 to 1948 was purchased by Metro Parks in 1964 and became the Kingdom of Nature. Seiberling’s own son founded the Goodyear Tire Rubber Company in 1898. The company made tires for bicycles and railroad cars and then took over the car tire business. Seiberling’s interests went far beyond the tires. He helped form Akron’s original Metropolitan Park district and was a member of the Board of Commissioners for Parks from 1924 to 1935.
Today the Natural Kingdom is an area of special use that has been set aside for the study and exercise of nature.

Bath Forest
William O’Neill, founder of the General Tire and Rubber Company, and his Grace’s wife donated their family’s 242-acre underground farm in 1972. Their son, M. Gerald O’Neill, served on the Council of Parks Commissioners from 1969 to 1978.The O’Neill family owned cattle and horses, and their old barn still stands in a building that is the perfect “condominium” for bats. Other winged creatures in O’Neill Forest include oriental pigeons, which nest in boxes maintained by staff and volunteers throughout the park. Oriental woodcocks, prickly owls, fleecy woodpeckers, song sparrows, kingfishers and fleecy partridges have been spotted among oak, black willow, oriental poplar, sycamore and black walnut. Ferns and wildflowers cover the ground with carpets.The Yellow Stream, the cleanest tributary of the Kuyahoga River, harbors turtles, frogs and a variety of fish. Biologists believe the fish from this stream will eventually re-colonize the polluted river as clean-up work continues.

Run to Akron
1000 acres Sand Run Metro Park opened in 1929, but the area has been welcoming visitors for centuries. The land around the Mingo Pavilion was a camping site for the Mingo Indians.The Portage Trail was once an important Native American trail between the Cuyahoga and Tuskaravas Rivers later, it was the western border of the United States. The high ridge above the Wadsworth area was a lookout point for General Elijah Wadsworth, who made his camp near the present-day Old Portage area during the 1812 War. In the 1930s, the Sand Run Parkway and many of the surrounding shelters and structures were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. In 1974, the park district’s administrative offices were moved here from the Goodyear Heights Metro Park.Today, visitors can drive through the ford crossing where the Sand Run meanders through the Sand Run Parkway. In the cool, shady ravines of Sand Run and its tributaries, hemlocks, ferns, skunk cabbage and large horsetail colonies grow. Large-flowered trillias and other seasonal flowers appear every spring, including the bishop’s cap, foam flower, bloody and pale purple. The towering forest is home to red, gray, black and fox squirrels squealing, forbidden and great horned owls and pile woodpeckers.Red-tailed hawks roam the tops of trees when they are not hovering over ridges. The park is home to many rare species, including hawks, oil trees and native orchids. Near the intersection of Sand Run Parkway and Merriman Road is a small wetland area that has become a highly productive amphibian breeding area. Every spring, the parkway is closed at night when spotted salamanders migrate to the area to mate. This phenomenon has become a popular attraction for dependable nature lovers who often stand in the rain to witness hundreds of salamanders crossing the road.Other amphibians that breed in this area include spring peepers, tree frogs, American toads, and green frogs.

Creek at Norton
624 acres Silver Creek Metro Park is located in a quiet rural area just outside Norton. Observant visitors will see traces of the past.The open fields, fence rows and an old barn, part of which dates back to the Civil War, are testament to the park’s former life as the Harter Dairy Farm. Other secrets are less visible. Buried beneath the surface is a labyrinth of tunnels and mines, remnants of 19th century mining. The single-family farm has changed a lot since Metro Parks acquired the land in 1966. Thousands of trees were planted, and a bathhouse and 50 acres of lake – fed in the spring from an old mine near Wall Road – were built in the early 1990s.Today, iron water from mine shafts feed into Silver Creek, covering the bottom of the creek with reddish brown iron oxide, but fish, frogs and other animals thrive. The open fields are home to woodcock, meadow and oriental bluebirds. Many butterflies flutter among flowers and grasses. Hawks circle overhead to hunt rabbits, mice and voles living in the grasses and seeded below. Deer travels among forests, fields and wetlands. Tall sycamores grow in damp areas, while hickory forests grow in drier areas.Beech forests contain spring wildflowers. One of the largest northern red oak trees in Summit County – 20 feet in circumference – stands in this park.

Springfield Swamp
This highly anticipated Metro park is the first in the southeastern Summit District and is now open. The trail is marked and the parking lot is finished.However, there are no toilets and there will be more changes in the next few years during this “Watch Us Grow” phase. In the future, the restored prairie will attract butterflies and birds such as bobjobs, meadow beetles and rails – all kinds of meadow-nesting species.

This metro park was recently built at 91 sites. There are two trails: the meadow loop and the meadow trail. Meadow Loop – easy 35 miles of flat terrain.The Meadow Trail is right next to the car park and is 2.0 miles through the woods and passes through the County Home Cemetery. Hiking

Hiking Trail, a fully paved multipurpose trail, one of the first in the county to convert from rails to trails with trails in Sagamore Hills, Northfield Center, Boston Heights, Stowe, Munroe Falls and Hudson.
The 33.5-Mile Bike Hike Trail was one of the first “rail-to-trail” transformations in the country. It follows the course of the old Akron, Bedford Cleveland (ABC) Railroad, which was the longest electric railroad of its kind when it was built in 1895.Until the service was discontinued in 1932, riders could travel for 50 cents from Akron to Cleveland Public Square in about 2.5 hours. Today, east of Route 91 in Munro Falls, the Bike Hike Trail parallels the scenic stretch of the Cuyahoga River where great blue herons, Canada geese and various ducks can be seen. A small pond along the north side of the trail hosts a choir of spring peepers annually. South of Boston Mills Road in Boston Heights, the Sharon Conglomerate Rock Walls of Boston Ledges climb along the trail.Further north, the trail follows Brandywine Road. Parking next to the bridge over I-271 offers relaxation and views of Brandiwine Falls, which, at 75 feet, is one of the tallest falls in Ohio.

Erie Canal Towpath Trail, a multi-purpose trail that follows the abandoned canals of Ohio and Erie, with trails in Akron, Barberton, New Franklin and Clinton.
The Erie Canal in Ohio was a technological marvel.The inland waterway included a series of sandstone castles that allowed boats to navigate elevation changes along the continental divide. The steepest section of the canal was between Akron and the Little Cuyahoga River. One mile required 15 locks, or “steps”. Boats pulled by mules along the trail made it possible to deliver goods from the Great Lakes (Lake Erie) to the Gulf of Mexico (via the Ohio and Mississippi rivers). Locally, the canal that opened between Cleveland and Akron in 1827 can be directly linked to Akron’s growth.The city’s population grew due to the bustling activity surrounding the tight bundle of canal locks.
By 1878, the value of the canal had fallen into disrepair due to the introduction of railways. After the Great Flood of 1913, the canal was abandoned – less than 100 years after its opening. For years, the channel was largely forgotten or ignored. The concept of rehabilitating a towing trail for use as a multipurpose trail began to emerge in the 1980s, and the first section of a towing trail was opened in 1993.In almost one night, the number of visitors to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park doubled. The towing lane rehabilitation quickly spread to municipalities and adjacent park areas, including Metro parks serving Summit County.
Acron Zone (Botsum to Innerbelt / SR-59) – Along this 9.28-mile stretch, the Kuyahoga and Malaya Kuyahoga rivers are home to a wide variety of aquatic life. Birds include herons, geese, ducks and kingfishers. Frogs and salamanders mate and lay eggs in basins that congregate in river floodplains.Water-loving native and non-native trees and shrubs dominate the area. Native species include poplar, sycamore, elm and silver maple. Their chewing stumps signal the beaver’s activity. Wild flowers abound in sunny, shrub-free sections of the trail.
Barberton Area (Waterloo Road to Snyder Avenue) – Plants that thrive in eroded soils dominate this 5.11-mile stretch and include both native and invasive species. Shrubs include sumac, blackberries, and invasive Japanese bridles, while trees include boxer, black locust, and invasive bump trees.Summer and fall wildflowers include Queen Anne’s lace, yarrow, teapot, evening primrose, and common mullein. The Tuscarawas River and the water-filled canal are home to a wide variety of aquatic life. Along the canal you can observe beavers, muskrats, colored and musk turtles, as well as several species of frogs. Royal beasts and great blue herons can be seen.
PPG Industries (Eastern Road to Center Road) – This 4.54 mile stretch is built on land leased from PPG Industries.From 1899 to 1973, the liquid and solid waste from the company’s chemical plant – mainly lime and aqueous slurry with small amounts of sand and salt – was pumped into six sedimentation tanks, here called Lime Lakes, covering a total of over 600 acres. Water drained from the Calcareous Lakes, leaving behind fine-grained limestone deposits up to 50 feet deep. As a result, the flat, barren landscapes were too alkaline and nutrient-poor for plant growth.In the early 1980s, PPG began rebuilding the local environment by depositing nutrient-rich biosolids into limescale deposits or sludge from urban wastewater treatment plants, which are often used in agriculture. Vegetation was then planted in artificial soil to reduce the amount of rain that seeped through it. Result – Wildlife, including painted turtles, ring-necked pheasants and white-tailed deer, has returned to the reclaimed Linden Lakes.
Clinton Zone (Central Road to the Stark County Line) – Along this 2.6-mile stretch, rich, often saturated river floodplain soil maintains an abundance of wildflowers from spring to fall from spring to fall, tempting a variety of insects, including butterflies. Many tree species can be found along the trail, especially in humid areas, including crested berry, elm, silver maple and marsh white oak.

In addition to 13 developed parks and over 120 miles of trails, Metro Parks manages several conservation areas to conserve Summit County’s natural resources. Although these reserves are not officially open to the public, most of them can be reached via nearby trails.
Launch Sanctuary
Surrounded by the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, this 366-acre conservation area is characterized by steep ravines and nearly mature forests. Columbia Creek flows through the area and supports several communities of coldwater fish, including the southern red-bellied roach, a rare minnow.Rare birds have also been observed here, including blue warblers, of concern to Ohio. This area can be reached via the Buckeye Trail throughout the state.
Nature Reserve
The smallest of our named nature reserves, 73 acres of Kniss Nature Reserve was donated to the Conservancy in 1974. It adjoins the Bath Nature Reserve, which is administered by the Bath Township Park System. At one time, these forests were considered one of the best local examples of the beech maple ecosystem.
Conservation Areas
This 705-acre protected area includes fields and forests that are home to rare plants.One of these species is the butterfly, which is attacked by a fungus throughout its range. Here, black-throated green warblers are observed, and through some areas a kiln run flows – one of the cleanest tributaries of the Kuyahoga River. Part of the Manezh territory is leased for the production of sweet corn and continues the long tradition of agriculture in the valley. Corn can be seen growing on Everett Road and will eventually end up at Salai Farm, a regional attraction for many people traveling through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.The reserve can be reached via the neighboring bridle paths.
Semon Sanctuary
This 122 acre sanctuary was donated in 1974 by Waldo Semon of B.F. Goodrich in Akron, who invented a way to make PVC (vinyl) useful. The forest can be reached by trails maintained by the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The Stanford Trail has a short spur leading to Averill Pond, home to beavers, herons, and many species of amphibians. Several rare plant species grow here, including satin bonfire and wild rice.
Conservation Area
In 1974, the National Park Service acquired thousands of acres managed by subway parks, including Virginia Kendall Park.
