„Polecam z czystym sumieniem”

“It’s in my blood” # Armwrestling # Armpower.net
“A stately man approached me at the Stargard-Szczecinski championship,” recalls David Bartosiewicz, a Polish armwrestler and silver medalist in the 75 kg world championship in 2013. – And, grinning, he said to me: “What kind of rivalry is this, I would have laid you all down, I never lost!” Someone told him to wrestle with me. He just laughed: I then weighed 66 kg, he is about twice as much. Someone asked: “Why laugh? Try!” Well, he tried. After a quick defeat, he did not even want to watch the competition, he just left.
Who is David Bartosevich? He is an economist by education, but when he was little, he wanted to be … someone famous.
“A musician, an artist, but not a fireman or a policeman,” says David. “I have been interested in sports all my life. Since childhood, he jumped, threw stones, played football and was one of the best in the yard. On physical-re was always in the forefront.
He became interested in arm wrestling in high school.
– It is clear that all this was at the school level. We fought with each other, with peers, but even then I was the best at school, says David. – I realized that during the fight you need to wrap in a hook. It was my natural reflex, it was in my blood.
He began to seriously engage in armwrestling in 2003 thanks to Artur Glowiński, one of the leaders of the Polish armwrestling.
“Arthur is my distant relative, and once at one of the family meetings we decided to wrestle,” says Bartosevich. – He persuaded me to train. At first, my brother and I wrestled on the shoe cabinet, with the other hand we held on to the corner of the furniture. Later we made a real countertop and picked up the legs. All the equipment we had was homemade: a block with simple ropes, a bench, dumbbells. But it’s not about the equipment, it’s about the enthusiasm. Even later, when I worked at my brother’s construction company, as soon as I saw scaffolding or a beater – anything you could grab onto – I would grab and pull myself up, hang, do various tricks, climb walls, even on the bus on the rails! That’s my instinct.
David took up professional training in January 2004.
– In April, I already participated in my first competition – the Polish Championship. And immediately took first place in juniors on the right hand, second – on the left and third place in the senior category on the right hand. Since then, I continue to travel to local and national competitions, constantly bring medals, get into the top three. So I was recruited, maybe because the success came so quickly, says the armwrestler. – Wrestling gave me emotions that no other sport gives, my heart was pounding with excitement.
The first problems came with the first injuries.
“I started wringing my hands literally six months later,” says David. – In January, I broke my left arm during the Gdynia Championship on the occasion of the Big Orchestra of Holiday Aid, wrestling with a guy from Lębork, because I blocked badly and my elbow could not stand it. In April, at the Polish Championships, I broke my right hand in the senior final, in July I broke my right hand again. The struggle was long, a second before the fracture, I felt that something was wrong.
Since then, if something crackles at the enemy, then Bartosevich is thrown away as if scalded.
“Bad memories,” David laughs.
Despite everything, he continues to fight on. After removing the cast from his right hand and a month’s break, he went to the third Professional League with twisted arms. The most interesting thing is that he won the League with the pros, being an amateur. After three weeks, inspired by the success, he went to the fourth League and in a fight with Tomasz Szewczyk again broke his right hand.
– There was also a dislocation of the elbow, but I was so depressed that I did not pay attention to it – today David speaks of this with irony, but then everything was different. – But as soon as one of the spectators saw the fracture, he lost consciousness and fell with his chin on the edge of the table. He went with me to the hospital in an ambulance: he for sutures on his beard, and I for a cast. We laughed a little.
Bartosevich felt so confident that he changed the weight category from 63 kg to 70 kg.
“It was 2007,” says David. – In January in the 63 kg category I won the League, and in April I participated in the Polish Championship in the 70 kg category. There I defeated everyone in the left and right hands and I remember that at that time there were the best athletes in this category. I overcame Daniel Gaida – it was something. I was well known…
David Bartosevich has been practicing for 10 years. How does he see himself in the future?
– When I started doing arm, there were 10 athletes around me. At first, everyone defeated me, after six months of hard training, great progress was noticeable. But when I started training, I still didn’t know if I would find myself in this sport, – Bartosevich was puzzled. – Over the years, winning more and more titles, I was convinced that this is what I will be good at. And so I became the vice-champion of the world. I compare this with previous years, when I took part in Nemiroff twice, not being such a professional athlete as I am today. I trained the way I wanted to. And today I have a diet, regular workouts. I analyze what I should focus on.
The most important achievement for David was silver at the World Championships in 2013.
– The 75 kg category was strong, many European and world champions competed in it, – says David. – I felt the weight of this medal, because it was really difficult to get it. I have fought athletes who have been at the forefront of armwrestling for years.
What are the dreams of one of the best Polish armwrestlers? Signing a contract with a good federation, which would guarantee the athlete a certain number of fights per year and certain money.
“I would like to keep the first positions,” David dreams. “I would also like arm wrestling to be covered in the media, for people to talk about it, and to change the approach to the sport. Today, arm wrestling is often perceived as something frivolous, a fight in a pub. I think every athlete wants their sport to be respected.
I ask David to give advice for beginners – and it sounds one, but useful.
“Perseverance,” the armwrestler says. – I am often asked how I do it, that I have enough strength, despite a number of injuries and other obstacles, why I do not quit. My answer is that in addition to enthusiasm, ambition and genetics, perseverance plays an important role. It is an ongoing struggle with your weaknesses. Enthusiasm is not an art when everything is arranged and goes according to plans. If we can overcome difficult moments, then we will see victories and successes. We just need to be persistent in what we do, and then we will consistently achieve our goals.
