Before the start of the playoffs, almost all North American experts, and in parallel with them, the bookmakers, designated the winner of the regular season, Vancouver, as a clear favorite in the West, and Pittsburgh, Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, in the East.
Two weeks have passed. Note “contenders” lost with a bang already in the first round to “Kings” and “Pilots” respectively. A holy place is never empty, and the role of the next favorite of the Stanley Cup was solemnly hoisted “St. Louis” under the control of the famous conservative coach Ken Hitchcock, who in the shortest possible time changed the playing style of the “Bluesmen” beyond recognition. For several months this team looked monolithic, excellently organized and devoid of pronounced weaknesses. The general manager of the team, David Poyle, did everything possible to return Alexander Radulov to the NHL, as well as to get Belarusian sniper Montreal Andrey Kostitsyn on St. George’s Day. And now, at the most crucial moment, both hockey players were suspended from participation in the matches of the series against the “Phoenix” for violations of the sports regime.
One gets the impression that Barry Trotz’s powerful, organized, traditionally athletic team is simply contraindicated for any bright personality. You can remember how a similar attempt by the Predators management to increase the attack on the eve of the playoffs failed in 2007, when Peter Forsberg himself came to Tennessee … goaltender Mike Smith, confidently won in five matches and reached the conference finals, the course and result of which, in the light of recent events, is absolutely impossible to predict.

“Washington”, entered under the new coach Dale Hunter in a new era, yet laid down his arms in the fight for the Stanley Cup. But, nevertheless, the team performed more than worthy and gave the fans 14 unforgettable matches with the strongest rivals: “Boston” and the New York “Rangers”.
Alexander Ovechkin, Brayden Holtby and company did their best, but the Blueshirts won the two most dramatic second round bouts. De facto, they predetermined the outcome of the series. In the third game, an accurate shot by Marian Gaborik in the third overtime forced the capitulation of a brilliantly played young goaltender of the Capitals, and in the fifth, Washington was let down by the protagonist of the seventh game with the Bears, Joel Ward, who received a double minor penalty in the last minute. As a result, the highest paid hockey player of the current NHL season, Brad Richards, equalized the score 8 seconds (!) before the final siren, and at the very beginning of extra time, Mark Staal again realized the numerical advantage. “Rangers” not only seized the strategic initiative in this confrontation, but also received a significant psychological handicap, which has not been missed.

The first game, in which the opponents showed hockey of the highest quality, and the initiative constantly changed hands, ended with two goals scored by Daniel Brier in overtime. The referees rightly canceled the first of them (the Pilots forward sent a projectile into the goal with his skate), but the second put an end to the game. It would seem that the Flyers could not even dream of a better start to the series, but then all the air seemed to be pumped out of the team …
The young squad, inspired to crush the star “Pittsburgh” in the attack, literally stopped and could not recover until the end of the series. The creative genius of Claude Giroud only reminded of himself from time to time, Jaromir Jagr moved around the court with difficulty and did not actually threaten Martin Brodeur’s goal, his counterpart Ilya Bryzgalov continued to make mistakes, and the Black-and-Orange defenders clearly could not cope with the high pressure that they imposed by opponents.
Given the opportunity to dictate the course of the game, the “Devils” took full advantage of the superiority in physical fitness, and won four matches in a row. Those who have lived in Moscow for a long time will surely remember metro trains of the Yauza type. Although they caused the most controversial opinions among both passengers and metro workers, it can be said with confidence that for their time in our country they were unique.
So, in today’s article we will try to launch a part of the dashboard from the now disappeared model of the subway train. Let’s find out how it all works and works. As usual, there will be a lot of interesting things.
❯ The bottom line is
Many of the residents of Moscow (where such trains were operated) managed to find them in operation. Appeared in the nineties, these trains have worked on the line for more than twenty years. Many modifications were released, among which were both experienced and modern. Later, their developments were used to create later cars – “Rusich” and “Yubileiny”, and the RA1 rail bus also has a body of a similar design.
In the summer of 2019, they were written off without exception, thereby completing their passenger operation. Only one copy remained, which they wanted to leave for the Museum of Moscow Transport.

The more unique the copy that I got. A rare detail from a train that has already irretrievably gone down in history – what could be cooler?
And I got a digital speedometer from the driver’s cab. He is the display unit ALS-ARS.
In the open spaces, we managed to find a photo of the driver’s console (on the KDPV, although it is in better quality, it has a different modification). The black panel with scales is the same display unit.
And here is my copy. The device is in excellent condition, except for a layer of dust and scuffs. The characteristic smell of the subway is also available.
So, on the front there are three LED scales of three colors: red shows the maximum speed, green – current, yellow – warning. To the right is an LED indicator that displays the current speed, an acceleration scale and an indicator of the direction of movement.
There is nothing interesting on the back and sides, only holes for ventilation.
On the right side there are 2PM connectors marked as X1 and X2. It can be assumed that one of them serves for power, and the other for control. Well, we’ll figure it out soon.

❯ Internals
Initially, I had no idea which way to approach this thing. On the Internet, we managed to find documentation for the ALS-ARS system of the Yauza and Rusich cars, but the principles of operation of its individual blocks were not reflected there. So the only thing left to do was to experiment.
What do we do when an interesting piece of iron comes into our hands? That’s right: we understand it.
To disassemble it is necessary to unscrew two screws on the left (one of which is under the seal, which I have crumbled for a long time) and six on the side of the connectors (along the perimeter of the case). After that, the entire metal casing can be easily removed.
There are three boards waiting for us inside. Conventionally, they can be divided into a control board, a driver board and an indication board.
There are wire harnesses coming from the connectors.
To separate these boards, remove the six flathead screws holding them together. Pictured is the bottom plate. Alas, it was not possible to shoot from a different angle, otherwise the wires interfere. But later I will try to compensate for this with more detailed photos.

First of all, we are interested, of course, in the lowest board. It is to her that the wiring harnesses from the connectors come. And this means that it is necessary to investigate it first of all.
On the board there is a KR1830BE31 microcontroller, next to it is a memory chip from Atmel. In general, these two microcircuits are the only two plastic cases in the entire device. Everything else is cermet. We find power and ground along the power lines of the microcontroller. They are indeed brought to a small connector, as I thought.
Well, let’s try to turn it on, shall we?
❯ First start
To begin with, we need a mating part from the connector. In this case – 2RMD18KUN4G5V1. The marking on the block part is erased, so I chose it purely by size and number of contacts. The second connector has a model 2RMDT30B24Sh5V1V. The counterpart to it is 2RMD30KPN24G5V1. In general, it is not necessary to use exactly these, they have several modifications, the differences of which (temperature resistance, shielding, straight or angled pipe) are not significant for us.
So, solder the wires and apply five volts. And nothing. Some examination of the circuit revealed another thick wire coming from one of the pins of this connector. Applying five volts to it did the trick. As you can understand, one line is used to power the electronics, the other is for indication.
Unit immediately after power up. You can see a kind of self-testing – all scales are lit.
After a second, the current speed and acceleration are extinguished. That’s it, nothing else is happening. Well, already some result.
The pinout of the small connector is thus:

To start, you need to parallelize the power and ground lines and apply five volts to them.
❯ Interface
Of course, I wanted to somehow manage it all. And this means that you need to figure out what interface this thing works on and what it wants in general.
Inspection of the bottom board revealed the presence of two very similar circuits on 3OD129A optocouplers. The outputs of the LED were connected directly to the external connector.
An attempt to close the photodiode leads was successful – something has changed on the scales. Apparently, the input signal is given here. It remains only to understand what it is.
Connect a signal source through a 220 ohm resistor. But the device did not care about a simple rectangular signal – the scales only flickered. It appears to be some kind of interface.
“Most likely, this is a UART …” – I thought. With these thoughts, I connected the block to the serial port and began to try to send something at different speeds, simultaneously observing the color music on the scales.
Something meaningful was achieved at a speed of 9600 baud – sending a couple of hundred bytes 0x01 caused the ignition of one segment on the acceleration scale. 0x02 was able to light two. That’s it, there was nothing else.
By the way, it should be remembered that the optocoupler is connected directly to the connector, so it is necessary to use an external resistor, otherwise the device may die.
❯ Bringing scales to life
To test, I decided to send bytes sequentially from 0x00 to 0xFF. And it turned out to be a good decision – some changes became noticeable on the main scales. Then I sent the bytes already “targeted” – not in such large quantities and certain values. What made it more difficult was that, having received a byte, the panel immediately reacted to it, and did not wait until all the data arrived.
So, in the end, I came to the conclusion that I need to send something like:

This gave some effect, but did not send the device into spacing.
Almost immediately, we managed to revive the green scale. The first byte of the packet is responsible for it. Every four units symbolize one division of the scale.
Then the yellow one succumbed. It turned out that the yellow and red ones work not for increasing, but for decreasing, that is, the maximum value means the scale is extinguished, and the minimum value is completely burning.
After poking a little more, I started the red one.
As a result, the format of the data packet turned out to be:

❯ Acceleration
Now it’s time for acceleration. For a long time I tried to understand where its bytes were and even in vain attributed the same four to the end of the packet, to which the block simply went out. As a result, it turned out that the desired value is hidden in the sixth byte of the packet – on average between red and yellow. Thus, the true form of the data packet turned out to be:

The value of this byte can lie in one of two ranges – 99-F5 – acceleration, 00-0F – deceleration. The entire line cannot be illuminated at once. One byte corresponds to one division of the scale.
We try to send a packet, and here is the result:
❯ Indicators
As can be seen, during all the experiments, two LED indicators were off. And that means it’s time to try to revive them.
And first, let’s take a closer look at the indication board. To do this, we unscrew the screws around the perimeter of the front part and first remove the metal frame, and then the plexiglass plate with inscriptions. Here we are met by a bunch of LED bars, as well as two indicators. Everything is imported, no domestic ALSs with their lack of brightness.
The direction indicator deserves special attention. This is not just a light field, it is a matrix LED indicator. Initially, they were produced for use as sign-synthesizers, but for some reason it plays the role of a single one. What prevented me from putting two ordinary LEDs or two light fields, I don’t know.

❯ Indicators
Since it was not possible to reach the indicators via the serial port, it is logical to assume that they are controlled from the outside.
Two 514ID2 chips were found on the bottom board, which are drivers of seven-segment indicators. The call revealed that four data lines from each chip lead directly to the same 2PM. But here, too, not everything is so obvious: as it turned out, food is supplied to them separately. And it is displayed not on a small connector, but on a large one. This must also be taken into account when connecting. In fact, the circuit with seven-segment indicators is a separate independent circuit.
We try to apply some combination, and … the indicator comes to life! The indicators are controlled independently, that is, in total, eight wires are needed to connect them.

It is the turn of the last element – the direction indicator.
And, as it turned out, it’s even easier with it – just pull one of the connector legs to the ground to make it work.
