The Wedding read online by Julia Garwood (Page 13)
—Would the laird like to confess his sins?
— No!
His answer sounded so harsh that Father Sinclair shuddered and thought it best to move away, as if in a hurry to greet the others.
Connor didn’t care if he responded harshly or not. He kept his eyes on Brenna, waiting for her to look at him. He decided it was time to make her more respectful of himself, and, God knows, he would have done just that, if Brenna had not suddenly stared at him with an expression of deep surprise on her face.
– Connor, you’re not that ugly after all.
— Do I need to know this?
— No, not necessarily, but I just wanted to tell you. Well, it doesn’t matter if you’re handsome or not, I’m going to marry you anyway. And if I promise, I always keep my word. But I want you to promise me something too.
— No.
Her eyes widened in surprise.
— But you don’t even know what I was going to ask. How can you say no?
– The priest is waiting.
Brenna forced herself to be patient, because the question she was about to ask him was the most important thing to her right now.
– As soon as the priest blesses our union, will you explain to me why you decided to marry me?
Connor didn’t see anything wrong with her question, although he thought it odd that she should be interested.
“Good,” he agreed. “Are you going to continue being so stubborn?”
— Am I stubborn? Somehow I didn’t notice it.
Just in case, she hurried to change the subject before he said anything more about her.
– Thank you for allowing me to confess to Father Sinclair. We both thank you for your patience.
Connor was surprised at her gratitude.
– Our priests are the most respected people in the Highlands. I wouldn’t dare interrupt him even if I wanted to.
She noticed Father Sinclair waving at them and took Connor’s hand.
– The Holy Father would like to start. Are you ready? I must admit I’m very worried,” Brenna added in a whisper.
– In vain, let’s start now – and you will immediately calm down.
— Really? she asked, wondering how she could dare such a feat.
– Of course, because in the end you will understand what is better with me. No woman in her right mind would want to marry that McNair pig.
He spoke so confidently that she decided to believe, and besides, she had no other choice. Brenna wished she could feel that certainty herself, even tempted to lean against him and borrow some of his power. But she restrained herself, thinking that by doing so she would show her weakness to him, and this she did not want. No, no, she’s just worried. That’s all.
As soon as Brenna noticed that everyone was looking at her, she forced herself to smile and straightened her shoulders.
– I hope I don’t mix up the words of the oath. I didn’t have time to think about what to say to you, and I…
— No, we can’t wait any longer. You will do everything right.
– But I…
Hearing the excitement in her voice, Connor decided to cheer her up:
– Everything will end so quickly that you won’t have time to look back.
Brenna guessed that he meant the ceremony and did not correct him. She, of course, was worried that she would confuse something in the oath, but she knew that she would say the right words, one way or another. She was more concerned about the future. Everything is so irrevocable! She doesn’t know Connor at all. Though, she reminded herself, so did McNair. Would a future with him worry her less?
Brenna stared straight ahead and stood motionless for a minute, trying again and again to imagine the possible consequences of what she was about to do.
Finally, she decided to rely on the mercy of God in everything.
– There’s no turning back now, Connor Macalister.
He nodded, hearing the conviction in Brenna’s voice and realizing that she had made her final decision.
— Not really.
She walked ahead of Connor, her head held high, showing her desire to go all the way.
— You see, everything is very simple.
Yes, it would be easy if the desired coincided with the actual. He imagined that she had finally given in to reason and was determined to submit to it.
But Connor had no idea how wrong he was.
Chapter 4
It just didn’t work out with this woman. They eventually got married, of course, but the ceremony seemed to take forever. And, of course, the bride was to blame for this. She was in utter confusion as the priest chanted out all the virtues of the holy sacrament of marriage. Throughout this soul-saving speech, Brenna could not stand still. Connor urged himself to restrain himself, trying not to get angry or annoyed, even though his head was spinning. As, however, and the rest. The two warriors, almost ready to lose their balance, had to close their eyes to keep from falling. After a while, Sinclair also fell into a fainting state: he did not even suspect what a mistake he was making in trying to please the bride.
And it all started really simple. When the priest asked the couple to stand beside him and turn to face him, Brenna was quick to comply. She seemed to be ready for obedience in everything, and Connor decided that she was just as eager as he was for the end of this ceremony.
He should have been more insightful.
— Laird, what if your people stand behind you in a semicircle? Then they can all be witnesses of this joyful event,” she suggested to Connor.
“Well, they are up,” he said when the warriors complied with her request. “Lady Brenna, are you ready to finally begin?”
She turned to the priest, and her answer was addressed to him:
— Yes, my father.
The priest smiled.
“You are all beaming, my daughter,” he whispered.
He couldn’t help but praise her in order to cheer her up, but immediately noticed the displeasure on the faces of the men and remembered that mountaineers don’t like it when other men pay attention to their women. Father Sinclair realized too late that the same applies to men in cassocks.
The priest hurried to correct his mistake:
— Your bride, laird, finally realized how lucky she was, and now she just beams with happiness. I just wanted to point this out.
Connor didn’t understand why the priest was so excited. He nodded, reassuring Father Sinclair and urging him to take up his duties and bless their union.
Sinclair cleared his throat, made the sign of the cross, and spoke of the duties of husband and wife.
Brenna seemed calm and at first stood motionless with her arms at her sides. Connor quickly got tired of listening to the priest, but she hung on his every word. As Brenna began to shift from foot to foot, Connor thought she was bored, as was he. Therefore, he did not attach much importance to the fact that she slowly began to wring her hands, and this should have alerted him, since it did not bode well.
– Lady Brenna, please turn to the laird as you take the oath.
She obeyed without hesitation, but Connor saw the look of panic in her eyes as she turned to him. There was not a trace of blood in her face, and he could only pray to God that she would not faint until the priest finished the ceremony.
He waited for Brenna to speak, but her silence went on and on, and then he decided to start himself. He quickly spoke the words of a brief vow, promising to protect and respect his wife.
The men chuckled approvingly.
It only took him a couple of minutes to say his few words. But they spent the rest of the evening on Brenna.
“Now it’s your turn,” the priest said to the still silent Brenna. “You must swear an oath, or I will have to think that you are going to change your mind. Is it possible?
She shook her head furiously:
— No, I’m going to marry him, holy father. I’m just looking for the right words. It is very important that I say everything correctly.
These were the last articulate words she spoke after. And she talked a lot more and for a long time. A very long time. She began to pace back and forth, anxiously considering every word she said. Several times she walked around the priest, but then the circles that she described gradually began to expand, until everyone standing in the clearing was inside. No one even had to rack their brains to guess what she was thinking, because she spoke all her thoughts aloud. Connor could see that she hardly noticed what she was doing. At some point, he even felt a slight dizziness and then stopped following her eyes. And she walked and walked around them until she completely whirled Father Sinclair, who turned after her, because she wanted him to be as attentive as possible to her words. She promised to respect and honor Connor just as he promised her, but unlike him, Brenna tried to explain in detail the vows she makes.
It was clear she wouldn’t stop until she was done, and Connor didn’t even try to intervene. He relaxed, folded his arms over his chest and closed his eyes. At first the priest thought the laird was bored. But every time he glanced at him, Father Sinclair saw a smile on his face. Apparently, Connor was having fun listening to the bride’s mumbling.
