The Driving Force: Mike Croswell’s Journey in Game Development
At the heart of Colorado Game Coders is Mike Croswell, a seasoned professional whose journey in game development spans over three decades. Croswell’s passion for gaming ignited in 1980 when he taught himself Assembly Language to program video games. This early start set the foundation for a career marked by continuous learning and innovation in the field of Computer Science and Game Technology.
Croswell’s educational background includes a BS in Math and an MS in Computer Science, with a focus on Computer Graphics and AI. This solid academic foundation, combined with his practical experience, has enabled him to tackle complex projects across various industries.
Professional Experience Beyond Gaming
While gaming has been a constant in Croswell’s career, his expertise extends far beyond this realm. He has developed software for high-profile organizations such as the FAA, the US Navy, and NASA, utilizing C++ since 1984. This diverse experience has undoubtedly contributed to the robustness and versatility of Colorado Game Coders’ offerings.
During his graduate studies in Computer Vision, Croswell further expanded his skillset by writing custom software solutions for Vicon Motion Capture and Colorado Medtech, among others. This period of his career demonstrates his ability to apply gaming and computer science principles to solve real-world problems in various industries.
Educational Contributions and Industry Involvement
Croswell’s commitment to the gaming industry extends beyond development. With over 15 years of experience teaching Computer Science at colleges in Colorado and Wyoming, as well as Game Design at Westwood and DeVry, he has played a crucial role in shaping the next generation of game developers.
His involvement in the gaming community is further evidenced by his membership in the International Game Developer’s Association (IGDA) and his active participation in the Colorado Game Developer’s Association in Denver. Croswell’s leadership is demonstrated through his role in heading the Fort Collins’ Meeting Group/Unity SIG.
Global Game Jam Participation
Croswell’s dedication to the craft is further highlighted by his participation in five consecutive Global Game Jams (GGJ 2010-2014). These intense, time-limited game development events showcase his ability to work under pressure and collaborate effectively with other developers. His hosting of the latest jam at the Armstrong Hotel in Fort Collins underscores his commitment to fostering a vibrant game development community in Colorado.
Pioneering Unity Development and Education
In 2013, Croswell took a significant step in advancing Unity development by founding the IGDA Unity SIG with the help of industry veterans Oded Sharon and Emil (AngryAnt) Johansen. This initiative demonstrates his commitment to fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing within the Unity development community.
Perhaps one of Croswell’s most impactful contributions to the field is his self-published book, “Unity Game Coding Using C#”. Released electronically on the Unity Asset Store, this book serves as a valuable resource for aspiring and experienced game developers alike, further cementing Colorado Game Coders’ reputation as thought leaders in the industry.
