Which college football team has claimed the most national championships. How many titles has Alabama won in recent years. What conference dominates the national championship scene. Discover the answers to these questions and more in our in-depth exploration of college football’s greatest winners.
The Evolution of College Football Championships
College football has come a long way since its inception in 1869 when Princeton and Rutgers played the first two games of the inaugural season. Over the past 150 years, the sport has grown into one of America’s most beloved pastimes, with millions of fans eagerly following their favorite teams each season. However, determining the national champion in Division I football has been a complex and often contentious process throughout the sport’s history.
The method of crowning a national champion has evolved significantly over time, leading to various ways of counting and recognizing national titles. This complexity has sparked numerous debates among fans and analysts alike, making it challenging to definitively answer the question: Who has the most national championships in college football?
Yale University: The All-Time Champion
When considering the entire history of college football, Yale University stands out as the undisputed leader in national championships. The Bulldogs have amassed an impressive 18 national titles since their first victory in 1874. However, it’s worth noting that Yale’s dominance in college football is a relic of a bygone era, with their most recent championship coming in 1927 – nearly a century ago.
Yale’s remarkable achievement highlights the significant changes in college football over the decades. In the early years of the sport, Ivy League schools like Yale were powerhouses, but the landscape has shifted dramatically since then.
Interesting Facts About Yale’s Championships
- Yale’s 18 national titles span a period of 53 years (1874-1927).
- The Bulldogs won 16 of their 18 titles before 1910.
- Yale’s dominance helped establish football as a popular collegiate sport in the United States.
The AP Poll Era: Alabama’s Rise to Dominance
While Yale holds the all-time record, most modern college football fans and analysts focus on championships won during the AP Poll era, which began in 1936. This period marks the beginning of more standardized and widely recognized national championship selections.
In the AP Poll era, the University of Alabama emerges as the clear leader with 13 national titles. The Crimson Tide’s success is particularly notable for its recent dominance, having won six championships in just the last 13 years (2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2020).
Alabama’s Championship Breakdown
- 6 championships under Nick Saban (2009-2020)
- 3 championships under Paul “Bear” Bryant (1961, 1964, 1979)
- 4 championships under various coaches (1941, 1961, 1965, 1978)
Alabama’s recent success has solidified its position as the most dominant program in modern college football history.
The Southeastern Conference: A Powerhouse in College Football
When examining conference success in college football championships, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) stands head and shoulders above the rest. Since 1936, SEC teams have collectively won an astounding 30 national titles, making it the most successful conference in college football history.
The SEC’s dominance is not just a historical footnote; it continues to be the premier conference in college football. In recent years, SEC teams have consistently featured in national championship games and have often emerged victorious.
Factors Contributing to SEC Dominance
- Strong football culture and fan support in the southeastern United States
- Significant financial investments in football programs
- Ability to attract top coaching talent
- Success in recruiting elite high school players
- Competitive intra-conference play that prepares teams for national competition
The SEC’s success has set a high bar for other conferences and has played a significant role in shaping the landscape of modern college football.
Diversity in National Champions
While certain teams and conferences have dominated the national championship scene, it’s important to note that college football has seen a diverse range of champions over the years. Since 1936, 33 different universities have claimed at least one national title in football. This diversity speaks to the competitive nature of the sport and the potential for different programs to rise to prominence.
Of these 33 universities, 14 have won more than three national championships, indicating a tier of consistently successful programs that have managed to sustain their excellence over time.
Top Programs with Multiple Championships (AP Poll Era)
- Alabama (13)
- Notre Dame (8)
- Oklahoma (7)
- Ohio State (6)
- USC (5)
- Miami (FL) (5)
These numbers demonstrate that while there are dominant programs, college football remains a sport where multiple teams have the opportunity to compete at the highest level and claim national titles.
The Challenge of Counting Championships
One of the most contentious issues in college football is the method of counting national championships. Unlike other sports with clear-cut championship games or series, college football has historically relied on various polling systems and selection committees to determine its national champions.
This system has led to situations where multiple teams have claimed national titles in the same year, particularly before the implementation of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) in 1998 and the College Football Playoff (CFP) in 2014.
Factors Complicating Championship Counts
- Multiple polling systems (AP, Coaches Poll, etc.)
- Retroactive championship claims by universities
- Changes in the championship selection process over time
- Disputed titles and split championships
These complications make it crucial to specify the criteria and time period when discussing the number of national championships a team has won.
Beyond Championships: Most Wins in College Football
While national championships are the ultimate goal, they don’t tell the whole story of a program’s success. Another important metric to consider is the total number of wins a program has accumulated over its history.
When looking at total wins, a different set of teams emerges at the top of the list. These programs may not have the most national titles, but they have demonstrated consistent success over many decades.
Top 5 Programs by All-Time Wins
- Michigan
- Ohio State
- Alabama
- Texas
- Notre Dame
These teams have shown remarkable consistency and longevity, winning games across different eras of college football. Their success speaks to the strength of their programs, fan support, and ability to adapt to changes in the sport over time.
The Impact of Conference Realignment
In recent years, college football has seen significant changes due to conference realignment. These shifts have had a profound impact on the competitive landscape and the distribution of national championships.
Conference realignment has led to the creation of “super conferences,” which have concentrated many of the most successful programs into a few powerful leagues. This concentration has implications for future national championship distributions and the overall competitiveness of college football.
Effects of Conference Realignment
- Increased financial disparity between top conferences and others
- Changes in traditional rivalries and scheduling
- Potential for even greater dominance by a few conferences in national championship races
- Challenges for programs in smaller conferences to compete for national recognition
As college football continues to evolve, the impact of these changes on national championship distribution will be an important trend to watch.
In conclusion, the question of which college football team has the most national championships is more complex than it might initially seem. While Yale holds the all-time record with 18 titles, Alabama’s 13 championships in the AP Poll era make it the most successful program in modern college football history. The SEC’s dominance, with 30 titles since 1936, underscores the conference’s significant influence on the sport.
As college football continues to evolve, with changes in conference structures and championship determination methods, the landscape of national titles may shift. However, the rich history and tradition of the sport ensure that debates over the greatest teams and programs will continue to captivate fans for generations to come.

Most College Football Championships
When it comes to counting the number of national championships, there are several ways to look at it. But, for the most part, college football fans consider two main classifications: most national championships collected since the sport’s inception and most championships since 1936, or the AP Poll era.
Since the Beginning
- Yale University has received the most national titles in all of college football history, winning 18 since their first in 1874. Their most recent win was nearly a century ago in 1927.[3]
- Out of the top 10 college football teams with the most national championships, three are Ivy League members.Note Reference [3]
- The top 10 teams account for 71% of all national titles won in college football.Note Reference [3]
- Since 1869, only 47 different teams have been crowned as national champions.Note Reference [3]
From 1936 On
Many college football fans consider the start of the AP Poll era to be the true beginning of college football.
- Since the AP Poll made its debut, Alabama has won the most national championships, with 13 titles.Note Reference [1]
- Alabama has won just under half of the last 13 national titles, winning in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2020.Note Reference [1]
- The top five winners have accounted for 42 titles, which is half of all titles received since 1936.Note Reference [1]
- Six conferences are represented in top national championship recipients, but the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the Big Ten have each earned three titles during the AP Poll era.Note Reference [1]

Did You Know…
Believe it or not, college football did not always end in a postseason.
Between 1936 and 1950, national champions were decided by the Associated Press (AP) Poll, which ranked the top 25 teams from a collection of votes by sports journalists and editors.Note Reference [2]
In 1950, a separate ranking system was developed by all head coaches in the NCAA, known as the Coaches Poll. In 1954, the two polls split for the first time: AP selected Ohio State as the national champion, while the Coaches Poll decided on UCLA.Note Reference [2]
Hence, the fan frustration. In 1998 two teams faced off in a championship match for the first time. Known as the Bowl Championship Series (BCS), it relied on rankings from both AP and Coaches Polls.Note Reference [2]
This methodology lasted until 2014, when the outcry for a multi-team playoff series grew to offset flaws in the ranking systems. Since then, the College Football Playoff (CFP) committee hand-selects four teams to compete for the title and a slew of other teams to compete in Bowl games. Note Reference [2]
What Conference Claims the Most National Championships?
The Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) is composed of 11 different conferences, each of which have between 10 and 14 teams. Here is how each of those conferences have performed in the national championship.
- In the 1980s and 1990s, the ACC made a big impact, winning 40% of national championships. Since then, the SEC has dominated, winning over 60% of national titles.Note Reference [1]
- The Southeastern Conference (SEC), home to the Alabama Crimson Tide (13 championships), the LSU Tigers (4 championships), the Florida Gators (3 championships), and other championship winners has collected 30 titles since 1936.Note Reference [1]
- The SEC also has the most teams to receive a national title (9), followed closely by the Big Ten (8) and the ACC (6).Note Reference [1]
- Five conferences — the Sun Belt, the Mid-Atlantic Conference, Conference-USA, the Mountain West Conference, and the American Conference — have yet to win a national title.
Note Reference [1]
- FBS Independent is also on the leaderboard with nine titles from Notre Dame, two from Army, and one from Brigham Young University.Note Reference [1]

Are you wondering who has won the most national championships in college football? Let’s get in to it!
The college football national championship is one of the most prestigious sporting events in America. The big game has been held annually since before the first Super Bowl, NBA Finals, Stanley Cup, and World Series. It’s crazy to think that the collegiate level is where the idea of national championship game came from, but it makes sense when you factor in that universities were established before sporting leagues.

Although the game has undergone various changes over the years, a national championship in college football has been held annually since the first meeting between Princeton and Rutgers in 1869. Now over 150+ years later the game is still held, and is watched by millions.
Here are the eight teams who have won the most national championships in college football.
8. Harvard: 12 Championships
- Years Won: 1874, 1875, 1890, 1898, 1899, 1901, 1908, 1910, 1912, 1913, 1919, 1920
- Head Coach: Tim Murphy
There was once a day that Harvard football was looked at as a powerhouse. The Crimson won three titles in the 1890’s and followed that up with four titles throughout the 1910’s. Although Harvard has won twelve national championships, the university only claims seven of those victories.
Notable Harvard football alumni include William H. Lewis, the first African-American college football player, and Marshall Newell, a four-time All-American in the 1890’s.
7. Michigan: 16 Championships
- Years Won: 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904, 1918, 1923, 1925, 1926, 1932, 1933, 1947, 1948, 1964, 1973, 1985, 1997
- Head Coach: Jim Harbaugh
The University of Michigan Wolverines have been a dominant football program for over a century. Their championship reign measures all the way from the early 1900’s all the way to the 1990’s.
More recently, Michigan has competed and been a top four ranked team, but still has come up short in the College Football Playoffs. Still, national title number 17 may be on the way shortly.
6. USC: 17 Championships
- Years Won: 1928, 1929, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1939, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1974, 1976, 1978, 1979, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007
- Head Coach: Lincoln Riley
It’s hard to compete the recent dominance of the USC Trojans, with a majority of their titles coming post-1960. USC has always been a powerhouse and a safe-haven for any college football recruit. I mean who wouldn’t want to play in sunny California while they live out the glory days of college? More recently, the best player to put on a USC uniform was Matt Leinart who just heard his name inducted into the college football hall of fame.
5. Ohio State: 17 Championships
- Years Won: 1933, 1942, 1944, 1945, 1954, 1957, 1961, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1973, 1974, 1975, 2002, 2014
- Head Coach: Ryan Day
There is no denying that Ohio State has been one of collegiate footballs very best of the last few decades. They regularly top the AP polls and find their way into the College Football Playoffs almost every year.
Ohio State was the first team to win a national championship since the game was changed to a playoff format and teams had to win a game to earn their spot in the finals. There is a very real possibility that Ohio State adds banner number 18 in the near future.
4. Notre Dame: 22 Championships
- Years Won: 1919, 1920, 1924, 1927, 1929, 1930, 1938, 1943, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1953, 1964, 1966, 1967, 1970, 1973, 1977, 1989, 1988, 1993, 2012
- Head Coach: Marcus Freeman
The Fighting Irish may not be as dominant as they once were, but that doesn’t stop them from contending for a national title every decade or so.
Notre Dame’s College Football national championships range from the 1910’s all the way to the 2010’s. There is no denying Notre Dame is one of the most famous American colleges world-wide due to the cultural impact the school has had.
3. Alabama: 23 Championships
- Years Won: 1925, 1926, 1930, 1934, 1941, 1945, 1961, 1962, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2020
- Head Coach: Nick Saban
No team has been as dominant over the past decade (and arguably since college football began) as the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Bama has won a total of 23 national titles since their inception as a university. Most recently, they have been fueled by hall of fame coach Nick Saban who many consider the greatest college football coach of all time. Not only has Alabama won a slew of national titles but they have produced some of the best talent in the NFL today.
2. Yale: 27 Championships
- Years Won: 1872, 1974, 1876, 1877, 1879, 1880, 1881, 1882, 1883, 1884, 1886, 1887, 1888, 1891, 1892, 1893, 1894, 1895, 1897, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1905, 1906, 1907, 1909, 19027
- Head Coach: Tony Reno
We may be nearing the 100 year anniversary of the last Yale Bulldogs championship, but there is no denying the history. Yale was extremely dominant in the 1800’s, winning 19 separate National Championships. As of 2022, Yale has won 17 conference championships since joining the Ivy League in 1954.
1. Princeton: 28 Championships
- Years Won: 1869, 1870, 1872, 1873, 1874, 1875, 1877, 1878, 1879, 1880, 1881, 1884, 1885, 1886, 1889, 1893, 1894, 1896, 1898, 1899, 1903, 1906, 1911, 1920, 1922, 1933, 1935, 1950
- Head Coach: Bob Surace
The most successful team in College Football history–going by National Championships–is the Princeton Tigers.
Princeton was the most dominant college football program in the 1800’s, winning 20 championships across the century. They haven’t claimed a national title since 1950, but that doesn’t change the fact that no one has currently won more than them. If I had to bet on it, I’d say that Alabama eclipses this number in the relatively near future.
