Rules of behavior when meeting with snakes – Safety measures for outdoor recreation in the summer
Rules of behavior when meeting with snakes .
A harmless snake is easy to distinguish from a poisonous viper: light spots (yellow, orange, off-white) are clearly visible on the sides of the snake’s head. In vipers, the head is clearly delimited from the body, and its color is the most diverse – brown, red-brown, gray, with a dark zigzag stripe along the body.
When going out into nature, you need to remember about a possible encounter with a viper, so the calves of the legs must be protected. Before you sit down to rest on an old stump or a fallen tree, you should look around, knock on the stump. In no case should you check with your hands the hollows of trees, voids under the roots, rodent burrows.
If you suddenly notice a snake crawling, freeze and let it go. When a person approaches, the viper is always in a hurry to crawl away or hide. If the snake is in a menacing pose, back away slowly. Avoid sudden movements that frighten the snake! You can not, defending yourself, put your hands forward, turn your back to the snake. If you have a stick, hold it in front of you towards the snake. The viper never attacks itself and does not pursue a person, even when irritated – it only hisses and makes attacks, as if “pecking” in the direction of danger. She will bite only when a person steps on her or grabs her hand.
Do not run away from a snake you meet – there is a danger of stepping on another snake that you have not noticed. Remain calm in decisions, actions, gestures. Remember, the snake you can’t see is dangerous, the snake you see poses the least threat.
Care must be taken when handling dead snakes, some of them retain their venom for a long time. An accidental sting with a poisonous tooth can cause poisoning.
Do not attempt to catch or play with snakes unless absolutely necessary, even if they are small and lethargic in appearance. Remember: baby snakes that have just hatched from an egg are also poisonous.
First aid in case of a snake bite
Incorrect actions in providing assistance often cause more damage to health than the snake bite itself, significantly complicate diagnosis and further treatment.
When bitten by a venomous snake, there is severe prolonged pain and swelling at the site of the bite, which spreads rapidly. The skin in the area of the bite acquires a reddish-bluish tint. After 20-40 minutes, shock phenomena occur: pallor of the skin, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, weak and frequent pulse, and a decrease in pressure. Periodic loss of consciousness is possible. Sometimes agitation and convulsions. For an adult and healthy person, the bite of an ordinary viper is not fatal. However, in case of untimely or incorrect treatment, severe complications can develop, up to chronic renal failure.
Immediately after the bite, the victim must be completely at rest in a horizontal position. If necessary, move the victim to a comfortable, weather-protected place. Independent movement of the victim is unacceptable!
To slow the spread of poison in the body, limit the victim’s mobility. Immobilize affected limbs. When bitten in the leg, bandage it to a healthy one and, putting something under your knees, slightly raise them. If you bite into the hand, fix it in a bent position.
The wound should be disinfected, a sterile dressing should be applied, which, as the edema develops, should be periodically loosened so that it does not cut into the soft tissues.
Do not apply a tourniquet above the bite. The imposition of a tourniquet on the affected limb worsens the condition of the victim, provokes gangrenous phenomena, and increases the possibility of death.
Remember that alcohol is not an antidote, but, on the contrary, makes it difficult to remove the poison from the body, enhances its effect.
Let the victim drink more tea, broth, water. Increased water consumption contributes to the removal of poison from the body. It is better to refuse coffee as a stimulant.
If medical attention is not available, the poison can be sucked out. Suction should be started immediately, after 3-5 minutes it is almost useless. This can be done by the one who happened to be nearby, and the victim himself.
First you need to gather the skin around the bite into a fold and squeeze to open the wounds, until drops of blood appear. Suction should be done with short, sharp movements. The contents of the wounds (bloody fluid) must be spit out. It should be continued for 10-15 minutes (at the first sign of edema – stop, since the poison has already been absorbed into the surrounding tissues and it is impossible to remove it). In total, from a third to a half of the poison can be removed.
It should be noted that in field conditions it is not possible to incise the bite site without introducing an infection (including deadly tetanus!) into the wound, so this should not be done.
If there are no open wounds in the mouth, this procedure is safe for the aspirator, since the poison that has got into the stomach, despite spitting, is digested and loses its activity. However, the mouth should then be rinsed with water or a weak solution of potassium permanganate.
Mongoose and COBRA model tests
model MONGOOS 24 041 (olive)
was given to our friends for testing in different conditions.
Some information about how everything went.
“First opinion after a week of wearing about the new version of the Mongoose.
another spaced apart, a new branded insole, in “Python” I had the same one – with sweat outlet holes.0005
Conditions – daily wear in the city.
– The size range is different from the same “Python” – moved from 45x to 46th.
– I changed my shoes from “Pythons” to “Mongooses”, as if I got into slippers, a lot of soft inserts, convenient and comfortable.
– Went, sometimes during the bend of the leg in the place of the bend, the suede upper presses on the base of the fingers, I wait for them to bend over, I asked others – there is no such thing, a strange anatomical feature, apparently the fingers are hooked.
– The sole turned out to be better than I thought about it, I used to avoid “Cobras”, I thought – the sole was too narrow, I remember it like in the “Cobra” in the store – I didn’t like it, but here I walk and I’m surprised, I was deceived – a comfortable sole, tear from the spot , you can say the legs themselves carry forward.
– In the city they look good and even impressive.
– At +15-+20 and hurried city walking parko, but tolerable, for me the temperature regime on them is up to +15, probably, here everyone has their own.
– Of course, suede itself is more difficult to clean than leather, but on the toe the new matrix leather is much better than on “Python” – it is easy to clean.
– The laces are thin, unusual, but strong.
Outwardly, the new shoes already resemble tracks, but in my subjective opinion they still remain in the category of urban ones, well, let’s also look like, we’ll see in different conditions, everything is just beginning…”
Further continuation of testing:
“Boots got used in a week of urban wear, they stopped putting pressure on the fingers. km per day …
… 9 days …
… in Brownian motion
Lunar landscapes, chaotic movement without roads through dry grass with small stones, toe protection works fine, injuries there was none, tripping is not felt, the sole is stiff enough to jump on the sharp feathers of rocky outcrops like a goat. 0005
I went uphill in mongooses, went downhill, went down into a couple of dry caves, I don’t feel on my feet, comfortable to wear both on the plain and on the ascent / descent.
It was not hot in specific conditions, I walked in them almost without taking off.
On the last day, we got very wet in the rain while I was in the cave, they dried for a very long time, a lot of sealants affect, well, the cardboard under the insole also dries for a very long time, you need to remember to take out the insoles to dry. Until that moment, I was so pleased with them that I was going to wear them to the MMB, but due to the wetness of the track, I will probably go to LM1, but the forest spirits will save my legs from injury.
Happy with the new boots “Mongoose”, my best boots in recent years.
The appearance of the boots after this route is no longer for
Summary: suitable for the role of tracks for easy hikes.”
Another test:
about boots Mongoose .
climbed the towers.”
I was pleased with the rather elastic and at the same time soft sole. We climbed the towers and there were no unpleasant sensations when I put my foot in the V-shaped opening of the structures. The leg was not squeezed and the sole was not pressed when I put my foot on the L-shaped profile. It sits perfectly on the foot. The sole is definitely tenacious and comfortable. The very protection of the toe, which actually met with rusty metal in the first place, came in handy.
The second stage of the check was a volunteer trip to the MMB – honestly spent 2 days in the field.
And one more test “Testing the COBRA and Mongoose boots at the source of the Moskva River”:
The test also touched the COBRA boot, which was already reviewed earlier 🙂 so as not to get out of context, I’ll post it as it is:
“As part of the ongoing 3-day running PVD organized by the Splav tourist club, two models of shoes from the Butex company were tested, namely, the latest model Mongoose M. 24041 and the already proven model Cobra M.12 000. The testers were Dmitry aka hoplite – the organizer of the PVD, tested Mongoose, and Pavel aka Deer Herder, respectively, tested Cobra.
The mongooses were slightly worn, so they didn’t cause much trouble. The cobra was absolutely new and already at the beginning of the trip there were some problems, the heels began to rub. I had to carefully glue all the problem areas with plasters, which helped a lot in the future. From the words of Pavel, I understood that the boots were more or less broken in around the evening of the second day, but before that they were subjected to the most severe tests. Photos of the first day of PVD:
On the first day, everything went fine, ordinary country roads, dirt roads, etc., steep descents and ascents (it was on the borders of the Smolensk and Moscow regions at the source of the Moscow River) Here everything is predictable and understandable, except for an unscheduled crossing of the river. I had to urgently look for a place to spend the night, because. We were a bit off schedule, and our side of the river was full of ticks, so we decided to ford the river to a better place. This is how the beginning of the Moscow River looks like:
On the second day after the rain, which fell half the night, we moved along the right bank of the river, constantly overcoming numerous streams that flow down from the slopes and feed the Moskva River with water. The places there are difficult to pass, there is a very high risk of dislocating a leg, landing unsuccessfully after jumping over the next stream (the descents and ascents between them turned out to be very steep and high), or slipping off a log while crossing the same stream. The average speed was such that we walked 2 kilometers in about 1.5 hours. However, everything went well. The tenacity of the sole of the Cobra and the Mongoose (the tread on them is the same) is phenomenal. Later, this was proved by Pavel, our scout, who was the first to cross the beaver dam to the other side and helped organize the transition for the rest of the group. He climbed over the logs like a real rock climber and the boots did not disappoint. It must be said that beaver dams are very unstable structures. Logs and flooring from branches constantly strive to disperse, and then there is a risk of going under water, and the depth in some places reached 1.5-2 meters. It would be very problematic to get out of this captivity. But everything worked out, we got off with small losses and a couple of soaked legs, but an unexpected surprise awaited us, but more on that later. Beaver Dam Crossing:
it was a surprise that we ended up on an island formed by a bend in the river and a channel separating it. The channel turned out to be not very deep, in the deepest place about 50 cm and not too wide, with a hard rocky-sandy bottom, so many simply ran across it without even changing their shoes. Personally, I jumped it literally in three jumps and managed to thoroughly wet only one boot. Photo of the channel:
On the sandy shore, a fresh bear footprint was suddenly discovered, not washed out by the night rain, and we quickly moved along the route and came out on such a road, or rather, what was left of it:
As a result, everyone got wet through, tired like dogs, but they got to the “land”)) The testers were extremely pleased with the boots.
