I will def. come back. Entrance not pretty but park clean and staff friendly. Our site was a perfect pull through so ideal place to stop if traveling either direction on I-88 close and easy on and off of exit 13. Big well mowed green space plus nice pool. Quiet park even on Sat night when we were there. All good.

Nice Spot To Stop And Relax
Pros:. Owners very friendly, sites are long and spaced wide apart (plenty of room for our 35 foot fifth wheel and truck) Nothing but trees and grass behind our back-in site 38. Best WIFI we’ve ever had in a campground. Plenty of bars on our cellphone. Permanent residents keep their sites neat. Pool sparkling clean. No noisy residents.
Cons: Lanes are full of mud puddles when you have a lot of rain as we have had during our 3 day stay. Water pressure low after everyone gets off work. Bathhouse needs updating.
Owners took over in 2016 and have had a lot of work dealing with unexpected issues, so park is a work in progress. We would stay here again when in the area. Sites are gravel and grass, no mud in the park-like surrounding area.
Check out the Star Mix Grill down the road towards town for excellent Mediterranean food… really good stuffed grape leaves and falafel!

Gilbert Lake State Park
Gilbert Lake State Park’s lake and three ponds lie in wooded, hilly terrain in the foothills of the Catskills. In addition to cabins and campsites, the park has more than 12 miles of interconnecting trails for hikers, skiers, snowmobilers and snowshoers. Playgrounds and a disc golf course, as well as swimming, boat rentals, boating (car top/hard bottom boats) and fishing are also featured.
Gilbert Lake is also home to the New York State Civilian Conservation Corps Museum.
New for 2021! Seasonal Camping: Choose one of a limited number of campsites and leave your camper from Memorial Day to Labor Day ($750) or Memorial Day to Columbus Day ($900). Beginning April 1, 2021 you may contact the park office directly at 607-432-2114 to make a reservation. Seasonal sites are first come, first served until they are all reserved. The sites DO NOT have electric, water or sewer services. No additional discounts, including the Access Pass, will be accepted for seasonal camping. All standard campground rules apply to seasonal campers. The seasonal camping application is provided in the documents list below. Please complete and mail, email or fax the application to the park. If paying by credit, we will contact you for credit card information to process your application.

Area Status: Open
Oneonta Trailhead is the gateway to popular day hikes as well as rigorous backpacking routes up Larch Mountain and into the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness. Parking at the trailhead is a simple pullout with about 8 spaces and a kiosk.
The journey starts with a steep ascent up Oneonta Trail to to start your adventure. One of the most popular routes from there is to continue down Oneonta Trail to Triple Falls, then return back to the junction with Horsetail Falls Trail (#438), where you will head east and downhill, creating a loop that passes by Middle Oneonta Falls and underneath Ponytail Falls (the nickname for Upper Horsetail Falls). This route ends at Horsetail Falls on the Historic Columbia River Highway, within a short jaunt of Oneonta Trailhead.
For a backpacking journey into the wilderness, continue along Oneonta Trail to connect with remote trails such as Bell Creek Trail (#459) and Horsetail Creek Trail (#425), where crowds are much thinner.
This trailhead also provides access to a journey along Gorge Trail #400, which runs parallel to much of the Historic Columbia River Highway.
NOTE: Oneonta Gorge (the creek flowing through a slot canyon to Lower Oneonta Falls) has its own sign and is located near Oneonta Tunnel. Although people enjoy taking the stairs down to the creek bed, please be aware this route is NOT an official trail and therefore we do not actively maintain it. We recommend stopping at the large log jam, which is naturally formed from fallen trees carried down by the river’s force because it is slippery, unstable, and dangerous to cross. Please recognize your skill level and realize there are frequent injuries here. There has been one death on the log jam, so it is not family-friendly.

Hartwick was a native of the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha in the province of Thuringia in
Germany and studied at the University of Halle. He was educated in the Lutheran Pitism movement. Hartwick emigrated to America in 1746 to serve as a missionary to German settlers in Rheinbeck and its Hudson Valley area in New York.

He was an eccentric idealist and intolerant of the vices of his parishioners, requiring them to sign a promise that they would “shoot clothes, take part in races, drink and dance”. He was forcibly removed from his first parish by his colleagues, and from there he moved to the northern colonies, not finding parishioners who would come to terms with his pious intolerance.

Hartwick commissioned his neighboring landowner, Judge William Cooper, to lease his land to suitable Christian settlers to create this “New Jerusalem.”But Cooper essentially ignored Hartwick’s criteria and indiscriminately leased the land. In 1764, Hartwick wrote an article condemning the death penalty for theft as contrary to divine law. He believed that there should be public education schools to replace the exclusive private schools of the time.John Christopher Hartwick died in 1796 at the Claremont estate, in the home of Robert R. Hartwick financially benefited from Cooper’s indiscriminate leasing deals and left instructions in his announcement to establish a public seminary. However, he made the task difficult by visiting Jesus Christ as his heir. The seminary opened only 15 years after his death.
Hartwick selected Dr. John Christopher Kunze, a leading Lutheran theologian, as Seminary Director.Prominent political and religious leaders Jeremiah Van Rensselaer and Frederic Muchlenberg persuaded Dr. Kunze to lead the seminary and teach theology at their home in New York. The Rev. Anthony Brown, who taught science and languages at Albany, and the Rev. John Frederick Ernst, who taught elementary school on Hartwick’s land patent, also benefited from Hartwick’s donations.
The school, first known as Hartwick Seminary, eventually became Hartwick College.Hartwick College was founded before the death of John Christopher Hartwick in 1797. 1. LL “Stub” Stewart State Park, Buxton
One of the newest campgrounds in the Oregon State Park System, LL “Stub” Stewart has been a popular camping site since it opened in 2007. About 35 miles northwest of Portland, Stub Stewart was built on former wooded land and now encompasses over 1,600 acres of wooded slopes, open hills and several campgrounds.Recreational activities at LL Stub include hiking, mountain biking and horse riding, with over 30 miles of trails to explore. An 18-hole golf course can also be found at LL Stub, and Discovery Depot Park is a great place to learn about the area.
LL Stub offers four camping areas and an additional cottage community. Both Dairy Creek West, and Dairy Creek East serve RV drivers with over 75 points of full engagement between two camping loops, while Brooke Creek Camp offers a more primitive camping environment with 23 pitches available.Stub Stuart is also well known for his four-stall Horse Camp. All visitors to LL Stub have access to hot showers and flush toilets.
2. Oxbow Regional Park, Gresham
Oxbow Regional Park, one of the closest campsites to Portland, offers 74 tent sites in a beautiful location on the east side of Gresham. Oxbow is a popular campground just outside the city limits due to its prime location in the picturesque Sandy River Gorge, where fishing, boating and swimming are popular under the summer sun.
About 12 miles of hiking trails surrounding the Dikaya River and the picturesque Sandy River are another popular holiday destination. The Oxbow is a favorite destination for families, cyclists and those looking for an easy escape from the city. Oregon Tube Station is serviced and campsite reservations are accepted nine months in advance.
3. Silver Falls Camping
Silver Falls State Park is fifty miles south of town and is a popular family camping site.More than 90 campgrounds have tents and SUVs at the Silver Falls Campground. In addition to access to flush toilets and hot showers, the campground is within walking distance of the South Falls day use area and one of the best hiking trails in Oregon.
Starting at the stunning 177-foot South Falls, the nationally designated Ten Falls Trail is an alternating 7, 2-mile walking loop with multiple falls and family-friendly terrain.Group camps, horse camps and lodges are also available by reservation at Silver Falls State Park.
4. Promontory Park, Overpass
The Promontory Park Hotel is located close to the North Fork Reservoir and the Clackamas River, just over 35 miles southeast of Portland. This is a very family friendly campsite. In forced quiet times in Promontori Park, you can choose more than 50 campgrounds, including a small collection of “yomes” – a combination of a yurt and a dome with canvas walls.
Boating, fishing and swimming are popular at the nearby North Fork Reservoir and the adjacent pier. Mount Hood National Forest can be easily reached within a short drive. The on-site shop sells basic necessities such as firewood, ice cream and meal kits.
5. Cape Lookout State Park, Editor’s Choice Tillamook
Cape Lookout State Park is just steps off the Oregon Coast and is an excellent base from which to explore the ocean.Surrounded by a large strip of dense coastal foliage, Lookout has over 200 campsites in this otherworldly environment, mainly serving the campground.
One of the best tourist and biker camps on the coast can also be found at Lookout Point. By walking from the campground in any direction, interested explorers can check out the headland’s routes, easy access to the beach, and a serene experience on Netarts Spit to the north. The park is approximately 80 miles from Portland and it is recommended that you book a few nights.
6. Beacon Rock State Park, Stevenson, Washington
Beacon Rock State Parks, located on the Washington State border in the Columbia River Gorge, have a long history of attracting visitors – 90,099 once camped for Lewis and Clark, when they were approaching the coast. Beacon Rock itself is an 850-foot basalt column sticking straight out of the ground overlooking the Columbia River. The approximately 5,000-acre state park surrounding this unique geologic feature is full of rich recreational opportunities, including a steep, towering one mile to the top of the cliff.
Other popular holiday destinations in Beacon Rock include 13 miles of multi-purpose trails, climbing trails on the northwestern flank of Beacon Rock, and the wide coastline on the Columbia River. The main campground at Beacon Rock has 28 forest areas that are best for campgrounds, with other overnight options including a small RV camp, two horse camps, and a group camp that can accommodate up to 200 people. 7. Trillium Lake, Government Camp
Visible from Portland on clear days, Mount Hood is the tallest mountain in Oregon and a distinctive playground in the Pacific Northwest, surrounded by the National Forest of the same name. John Christopher Hartwick (January 6, 1714 – July 17, 1796) was an American Lutheran minister in Colonial America and founder of Hartwick College. [1]
Background
Hartwick was a native of the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha in the province of Thuringia in Germany and studied at the University of Halle. He was educated in the Lutheran Pietism Movement.Hartwick emigrated to America in 1746 to serve as a missionary to German settlers in the vicinity of Rheinbeck in New York’s Hudson Valley. [2]
He was an eccentric idealist and intolerant of parishioners’ vices, requiring them to sign a promise that they “give up shooting, racing, drinking and dancing.” He was forcibly expelled from his first parish by fellow priests living in the area, and from there he moved through the northern colonies, unable to find a place for himself.a community that put up with its godly intolerance.
New Jerusalem
Hartwick believed that allowing ordinary people to own land and live away from each other was the cause of their immorality. He foresaw a utopian community dedicated to the principles of godly living. He entered into a series of land deals and eventually received a nearly 24,000 acre (97 km²) land patent from the Native American Iroquois in Otsego County, New York located southwest of what would become Cooperstown, New York. The first attempt to establish a permanent settlement on this site was made by Hartwick in 1761. Hartwick instructed his neighboring landowner, Judge William Cooper, to lease his land to suitable Christian settlers to create this “New Jerusalem.” But Cooper essentially ignored Hartwick’s criteria and surrendered the property indiscriminately. Hartwick’s vision of a settlement, and his estates formed the basis for the community of Hartwick, New York. [4]
In 1764, Hartwick wrote an article condemning the death penalty for theft as contrary to divine law. He believed that there should be public education schools to replace the exclusive private schools of the time. John Christopher Hartwick died 1796 Clermont Manor, home of Robert R. Livingston.

Hartwick financially benefited from Cooper’s indiscriminate leasing deals and left instructions in his will to establish a community seminary.However, he made the task more difficult by designating Jesus Christ as his heir. The seminary opened only 15 years after his death.
Dr. A. John Christopher Kunze was elected Director of the Seminary of Hartwick, a leading Lutheran theologian. Prominent political and religious leaders Jeremiah Van Rensselaer and Frederick Muehlenberg persuaded Dr. Kunze to lead the seminary and teach theology at his home in New York. Also donations from Hartwick were received by the Rev. Anthony Brown, who taught science and languages at Albany, and the Rev. John Frederick Ernst, who taught Hartwick’s land patent in elementary school.
The school, first known as Hartwick Seminary, eventually became Hartwick College.
