Since Russian forces were driven back from Kiev in late March, the bodies of more than a thousand civilians have been found in the Buchansk region, many of them hastily buried in shallow graves. As the BBC found out, about 650 people were killed – according to a senior policeman, they were shot. BBC correspondent Sarah Rainsford investigates what happened at a children’s summer camp that became a crime scene.

At first, in the dark, it is easy to miss the scene of the murder. But in a cold, damp basement at the edge of a forest that had attracted vacationers to Bucha before the war, five Ukrainians were forced to their knees and shot in the head.
To the right of the entrance there are stones covered with darkened blood. Among them lies a blue woolen hat with a bullet hole, the rim of which is soaked in blood. I counted at least a dozen bullet holes in the wall.

In a couple of steps – the remains of the military rations of the Russian army: an open can of rice porridge with beef and an empty pack of crackers. The graffiti on the wall reminds that there was a children’s camp here. But when Russian troops entered Bucha near the capital in early March, the Luchisty camp became a place where people were killed.
The story of the murders at the summer camp chills the soul. But this detail is no less frightening: in the Buchansk region during the month of Russian occupation, more than a thousand civilians died, and most of them – not from shrapnel, not from artillery shelling, but from bullet wounds. Russian soldiers have shot dead more than 650 people, a local senior policeman says.
Now Ukraine is looking for their killers.

Vladimir Boychenko lived in Gostomel, two kilometers from Bucha and not far from the airfield where the first Russian troops landed. His sister Alena Mykityuk fled to the west of the country without waiting for the fighting to reach the city and begged Vladimir to join her. He was a civilian, had nothing to do with the army, but wanted to stay and help the Ukrainian army. Vladimir ransacked Gostomel for days on end in search of food and water to bring to his neighbors, including children locked in basements due to constant artillery shelling and Russian air strikes.
A talkative 34-year-old man who traveled the world as a merchant seaman, Vladimir called his family from Gostomel almost every day to tell him that everything was all right with him.
Alena nervously waited for his brief calls: she knew that he needed to climb a hill to get in touch, and with heavy shelling it was impossible to leave the bomb shelter. When supplies began to run out, she again tried to convince her brother to leave, but by that time the roads were blocked.

The last time Alyona spoke to him was on March 8th. That day, Vladimir told his sister not to worry about him. “He said:” I love you very much, “and it was so painful to hear,” Alena sobs, unable to stop her tears. “Fear was heard in his voice.”
Four days later, Vladimir was seen not far from the camp “Promenistius” (in Russian “Radiant”). And then he disappeared.
In March, intense battles were going on around Kyiv, the small town of Bucha was in their epicenter. In early April, Russian troops left the city, leaving traces that shocked the world: the bodies of executed residents lying on the streets.
Russia stubbornly claims that the murders were staged, but this is as perverted as it is a deliberate lie. Ukrainian investigators are preparing to bring the perpetrators to justice and collect evidence of crimes in the territory that has again fallen under their control.
“We decided to work as quickly as possible … to record everything. Because we do not understand what Putin will have in his head tomorrow … whether he wants to throw rockets and destroy the evidence base,” says Andrey Nebytov, head of the Kiev regional police.
This evidence includes a field filled with civilian vehicles with numerous bullet holes, which have now been driven to the outskirts of Bucha. When the remains were found in the basement of the second building of the Luchisty camp on April 4, the body of Vladimir Boychenko was among them.
Prior to this, Alena had been calling hospitals and morgues for weeks. That day, she was sent a photo for identification. She knew it was her brother even before she booted up.
“I hate them, I hate them all, with every cell of my body,” Alena says about the murderers of Vladimir. guys. There was no living place on them. Even animals do not act like that. How can you take the life of a person so brutally. ”

The bodies of five men were found in a kneeling position, with their heads bowed and their hands tied behind their backs.
“We know they were tortured,” the head of the regional police told the BBC. “The army of the Russian Federation crossed the line of custom of warfare and the rules of warfare, and they fought not with the military, but tortured and kidnapped the local population.”
Neither the prosecutor’s office nor the Ukrainian Security Service have released details of ongoing investigations, but some Russian soldiers have been covering their tracks so casually that they likely left serious evidence that investigators can work on.
At some abandoned positions, Ukrainian territorial defense units even found lists of soldiers. One appears to be part of a garbage collection schedule, the other contains passport details and mobile phone numbers.

With such a huge amount of work – more than 11,000 potential war crimes have been registered to date – Ukraine’s security services have called in digitally savvy civilians for help.
“I feel a certain duty,” says Dmitry Replyanchuk, a journalist for slidstvo.info. Before the war, he was involved in exposing corruption in Ukrainian law enforcement agencies. He is now scouring the internet with prosecutors for additional data that could help pinpoint suspected war crimes suspects.
“I understand that it will be very difficult, and many cases will not be solved. But in these weeks it is important to find as much information as possible,” Dmitry explains.
In the rubbish heap at Luchistoye, we found one potential clue – a wrapper from a package sent by a certain Ksenia to a Russian soldier, clearly marked with his name and military unit. Unit 6720 is based in Rubtsovsk, in the Altai Territory. This military unit has been linked to Bucha before, when CCTV cameras in Belarus recorded how its soldiers sent giant packages full of goods looted from Ukrainian homes to relatives.

We cannot say for sure whether the soldiers from Rubtsovsk were based in the children’s camp or were there at the time of the alleged killings. The police first need to establish a more precise time of death.

Across the road from Radiant, behind a church riddled with shrapnel, Bucha slowly begins to come back to life. The boys are running around the yard, the men are boarding up windows blown out by the blast wave. A small local shop has reopened.

Neighbors recall the days when Russian tanks entered the city, soldiers firing into the air and drunkenly roaming the streets, breaking into houses and looting. They also remember a man who escaped to their apartment building from a summer camp, whom they sheltered despite the risk.
Viktor Sytnitsky did not know anything about the “Radiant” camp before, but all the details that he tells are the same. He is now in western Ukraine and told me about himself on the phone, calling from the car so as not to annoy his mother.
Russian soldiers seized Viktor right on the street in early March. They tied his hands and pulled a hat over his eyes, and then dragged him to the basement, which, as he is sure, was on the territory of the children’s camp.

There they poured water on his feet and put a gun to his head.
“They kept asking: where are the fascists? Where are the troops? Where is Zelensky? One of them mentioned Putin, I said something rude, and he hit me,” Victor recalls.
He remembers well his feelings of anger and horror at the same time. In the past, he worked in Moscow on a construction site with guys from Siberia and was horrified that the Russians were now treating him so cruelly. Especially when it turned out that one of the soldiers was also a Siberian.
Victor told him that he was hurt that it had come to this.
“It’s a shame that our grandfathers fought together against the Nazis, and now you are fascists,” he answered angrily. – You have until the morning to think, remember what you saw. And if you do not plant anything, you will go to waste.
You will be shot.”
Victor was lucky that night. There was heavy shelling, and when he realized that he was no longer guarded, he managed to escape.
“I figured that I had a better chance of surviving under mines than if stayed in that basement. They already put a gun to my head. What did it cost them to pull the trigger? They don’t risk anything, only I risked.”
The remains of Vladimir Boychenko were duly buried in the old Bucha cemetery.
After his funeral, Alena says that she finally saw her brother again in a dream, as if he was comforting her.

But she still has a lot of questions. The cross on Vladimir’s grave is only marked with his birthday, not the date of his death, because the family does not know when he was shot.
They will never find out – unless they manage to find the commander of the Russian unit stationed in “Radiant”.
