10 NHL players whose season was cut short by injuries – Svechnikov, Mikheev, Slafkovsky and others – SportTalk – Blogs
Disclaimer: friends, on the channel SportTalk we make a lot of interesting content about the National Hockey League, so we will be pleased if you read this material in the original video format and please us with a subscription to the channel. Enjoy watching!
It is impossible to be a professional athlete and not have any injuries and injuries during your career. Especially in hockey, one of the most traumatic sports. In general, playing all 82 games of the regular season in the NHL is considered a kind of achievement, but few get to it. Today we will talk about hockey players whose season ended ahead of schedule due to injuries. Anticipating many comments, we will explain right away: there were two criteria for getting into the selection – the player was injured during the season and will not play again this hockey year . That is why there is no Gabriel Landeskog (his operation was known before the season) or Taylor Hall (because he will almost 100% play in the playoffs). But even without these guys, there were enough broken players. You’re on SportTalk and these are 10 NHL players whose season has been ruined by serious injuries.
1. Juraj Słafkowski – Lower Body Injury
Let’s start with the 2022 draft pick of the Slovak Juraj Słafkowski. The first season in the National Hockey League for the young Montreal forward turned out to be extremely crumpled. Judge for yourself – the forward managed to spend only 39games in the championship, in which he scored only 4 goals and gave 6 assists, with a utility indicator of -13. And on January 18 of this year, in a game with the Rangers, the attacker was completely overtaken by a lower body injury, which resulted in missing the rest of the season. Fortunately, Yuray did not need an operation, but we will see a talented forward on the ice next time, now only in the fall. Agree, we do not expect such a debut season from a player selected under the first number of the draft.
2. Andrei Svechnikov – cruciate ligament injury of the right knee
Carolina forward Andrey Svechnikov also finished the season ahead of schedule due to injury. Despite the fact that Andriy again did not make any significant progress in terms of personal statistics this season, things were going well for him, as well as for the whole team. Now both the forward and the Hurricanes have problems. On March 12, in a game with Vegas, the attacker injured his right anterior cruciate ligament. Unfortunately, in this case, surgery was required, and Svechnikov will miss the rest of the championship and the entire playoffs. The injury of one of the leading forwards, of course, hit the Carolinas and its prospects in the postseason. Moreover, the Hurricanes did not work before the deadline to acquire another strong forward. By the way, we talked about all the main transitions of this NHL deadline in a separate video, we advise you to look at the hint above.
3. Max Pacioretti – Achilles tendon injury
“Carolina”, unfortunately for the Hurricanes fans, lost not only Svechnikov, but also Max Pacioretti during the championship. Max missed half of the games last season while playing for Vegas, followed by a forward trade to the Carolinas. The Hurricanes knew they were taking a forward with sores, and in August, before the season, Max went under the knife after undergoing Achilles surgery. Having missed half a year, Pacioretti went on the ice in January, played 5 games, in which he opened the opponent’s gate three times. But in a game with Minnesota, Max again injured his Achilles and was out of action for the rest of the season. We are sure that Pacioretti would bring a lot of benefit to the Hurricanes both during the regular season and in the knockout games, given his undeniable goalscoring skills and a fairly rich cup experience, but alas. Max will become an unrestricted free agent next summer, and now it’s even interesting who would risk signing a striker with such a history of sick leave and how the new union of the player and one of the clubs will turn out.
4. Ilya Mikheev – cruciate ligament injury
Another player who suffered the sad fate of not playing again this season is our Vancouver forward Ilya Mikheev. According to the player’s agent, Dan Milstein, Ilya played through pain for a long time, postponing the operation until a more appropriate moment, but on January 27, in the game with Columbus, the striker’s knee still could not stand it. As a result – an injury to the cruciate ligament, surgery and sick leave until the end of the season. In the same game, by the way, Ilya managed to earn his hundredth point in the National Hockey League. Unfortunately, this is not the first time that injuries have prevented Ilya from showing his true level of play. While still a Toronto player, Mikheev was out for a long time due to an injury to his hand, now his knee. We hope that the history of serious injuries of this hardworking and useful forward will be over here.
5. Sean Monahan – leg injury
Sean Monahan has become a regular infirmary for the teams he plays for in recent years. More recently, the striker was one of the leaders of Calgary and steadily scored points, but since the 2020-2021 season, injuries have begun to haunt the guy, and his performance has dwindled sharply. The Flames traded a troubled and rather expensive asset last offseason to Montreal, but Monahan also fell short there. Already on December 6, Sean suffered a leg injury in a game with Vancouver and was out of action for the rest of the season. Talented, but such a traumatic striker can only sympathize. By the way, in that game with the Canucks, which ended 7-6, the forward scored one of the goals. The future of Monahan is vague, in this they are similar to Pacioretti – Sean is also in the last year of his contract and it is not yet known which team and under what conditions will risk signing the striker next summer.
6. Zach Verensky – shoulder injury
Another loser of the season can safely be called Zach Verensky. And not only him, but the entire Columbus. Zach is the hope and mainstay of the Jackets, with a salary of $9.5 million per season. In the current championship, Verensky managed to take part in 13 games, in which he scored 8 points, but on November 10 he received a severe shoulder injury and a rupture of the articular lip. At that moment, the Columbus defender tried to hold a power reception against the striker of the “pilots” Travis Konecna, but he dodged, and Zach crashed into the board very unsuccessfully. This season for the leader of the Blue Jackets was completed, and then the entire Columbus went downhill. One of the reasons for such failures of the team from Ohio, of course, was a real epidemic of injuries that plagued the team throughout the championship. In addition to Verensky, the club’s infirmary was regularly replenished by other base players, which, of course, did not add stability to the club’s results. Who knows, maybe these injuries will eventually lead the club to victory in the draft lottery and, as a result, to Connor Bedard. Wait and see.
7. Jake Mazzin – Cervical Spine Injury
The next player to lose his fortune is Toronto defenseman Jake Mazzin. When he is in shape, Jake is definitely one of the strongest on the ice in his role. That’s just the fans of the “leaves” have long forgotten when Mazzin was in perfect order for the last time. Jake’s history of injuries in the last year alone has 7 different injuries of varying severity. Over the past 4 years, the defender has never played more than 53 games in a season. And so, on October 18, in the 4th game of the season against Arizona, Mazzin was again seriously injured, this one affected the cervical spine. In the playing moment, the Coyotes forward Clayton Keller attacked Jake from the back, and Mazzin simply did not have time to dodge, not seeing the opponent at all. As a result – again a serious injury and vague prospects for a full-fledged continuation of the career of an already broken defender. As for Toronto, against the background of their endless failures in the Stanley Cup, the loss of such a performer from among the defenders will certainly again complicate the team’s path to the coveted trophy. The Leafs management, of course, tried to fill the gap in defense during the deadline and traded defender Jack McCabe from Chicago, but a healthy Mazzin, of course, would have done much more good for Toronto.
8. Jakub Voracek – concussion
Another player who often receives sick leave is the Czech forward of the now Arizona Jakub Voracek. Last season, Yacoub returned to where he started his glorious path in the NHL – to Columbus, and already this season his rather big contract was leaked to the Coyotes, since that $ 8.2 million would now definitely lay down as a dead weight in the payment of “jackets”. Well, the management of Arizona, according to tradition, is happy to host such dubious assets. On November 4, in a game against Colorado, Yacoub was injured and ended the season due to concussion symptoms. According to Voracek himself, there have already been 7 or 8 of these concussions in his career, and he does not see himself in the game for the foreseeable future. Thus, Jakub Voracek joined Shea Webber, Andrew Ladd and Brian Little, whose salaries are also on the Arizona payroll. The contract of the Czech striker will be valid until the end of the 23/24 season, and so far there is absolutely no certainty whether the striker will go on the ice next season and whether he will decide to end his playing career altogether.
9. Oliver Ekman-Larsson – ankle injury
Next on our list is Vancouver defender Oliver Ekman-Larsson of Sweden. Another player with a massive $8.2 million contract was sidelined for the remainder of the season. Oliver suffered an ankle injury on February 16 against the Rangers, ending the defender’s championship. In 54 games of the regular season, Ekman-Larsson scored 22 points on the system “goal + assist”, with a terrible utility indicator of -24. It seems that Vancouver was very unlucky with the exchange of the Swede from Arizona a couple of years ago. Canucks fans say that as a player he has noticeably given up and degraded, and his injury proneness and huge contract, which will be valid for another 4 years, do not add optimism. With this development of the situation, it would be completely unsurprising if the management of Vancouver made attempts to trade a troubled player in the offseason. The only question is whether there will be a demand for a traumatic and such an expensive player.
10. Cole Cofield – Shoulder Injury
One of Montreal’s offensive leaders, young forward Cole Cofield also ended a season that had gone so well for him. Judge for yourself – he scored 36 points in 46 games and was the team’s first scorer with 26 goals. However, fate turned its back on the player, and after the match with Florida, which took place on January 20, he did not appear on the ice again, and will not play until the end of the season. The shoulder injury turned out to be serious, and Cole needed surgery. One gets the feeling that before this season someone cursed the Canadiens, because at once three forwards of the team, with whom the hopes were connected, were out of action before the end of the season – Cofield, Slafkowski and Monahan, whose stories we told earlier. Needless to say, fate throws difficult tests on the debutant in the coaching field, Martin San-Louis. In general, the situation with injuries in Montreal resembles the history of Columbus this season – during the championship, Jake Evans, Joel Armia, Jake Allen, Jonathan Drouin, Kirby Duck and other base players were out of action. With such an epidemic of injuries, there can be no talk of any tournament tasks, except for the race for Connor Bedard.
BONUS: Anton Forsberg – ligament injury in both knees
And as a bonus to this top ten, we’ll tell you about one more player. Not only the fielders were out for the rest of the season due to injuries, but Ottawa goaltender Anton Forsberg as well. And he got injured in the most ridiculous way. In a game against Edmonton, Forsberg’s teammate, defenseman Travis Hamonic, pushed Oilers forward Zach Hyman, who, in turn, ran into the Senators’ goaltender. As a result of the collision, poor fellow Forsberg, who already had a bad season and played badly, also injured the ligaments of both knees and left the ice on a stretcher. Moreover, at the moment when he was injured, Edmonton scored a goal, which was counted as a result, which is logical, because Hyman drove into the opponent’s goalkeeper against his will. Such an absurd set of circumstances forced Forsberg to end the season on February 12th. As a result, over the course of the season, Ottawa played as many as six different goalkeepers at the base: Cam Talbot, his replacement Mads Sogard, became the main one. Dylan Ferguson, Magnus Helberg and Kevin Mandolese also received their moments of fame, in general, all the legends of the goalkeeper’s shop. But none of them played enough for a stable backup role, and the “senators” themselves this season are almost guaranteed not to get into the playoffs, although they still retain mathematical chances.
Injuries are always a huge annoyance for the player, problems for the team and nerves for the fans. Especially if the damage is long-term. Of course, this is not a complete list of players for whom the season is over, but we tried to pick up the biggest names. In addition, there is no specifics on Ryan O’Reilly, Mark Stone and some other stars. They are also on the long-term injured list, but still have a chance to recover and help their clubs in the playoffs. Well, for our today’s heroes, there is only a long rehabilitation ahead and a return to the game next season. And SportTalk was with you, take care of yourself, we will hear you!
Calder Race: Chinakhov Among Favorites
NHL.com/ru keeps a close eye on the rookie race for the Calder Trophy, the league’s top newcomer, throughout the regular season. Today we name ten candidates who can count on this trophy.
1. f Cole Cofield (Montreal)
20 y.o., 170 cm / 75 kg
Video: MON-VGN Match 6: Cofield leads Montreal
9000 2 He is also considered a rookie, because in the last regular season he played for the youth team, gaining 5 (2 + 3) points in the US gold team, and also played at the University of Wisconsin, from where he later moved to the AHL. Therefore, Cofield played only 10 matches in the NHL regular season, scoring 5 (4+1) points. But in the playoffs, he showed up in all its glory, gaining 12 (4 + 8) points in 20 games, when his “Montreal” reached the Stanley Cup final. This season, everyone is expecting Cofield to play in the Canadiens’ first two lines, score big – and compete for the Calder Trophy.
2. to Spencer Knight (Florida)
20 years old, 191 cm / 87 kg
Followed the Caufield path – last season played for the University of Boston and the US gold team at the MFM (94.0% in six matches). And then he came to the NHL, where in four games for Florida he showed 91.9% of reflected shots. When the veterans played unconvincingly in the first round against Tampa (2-4 in the series), Knight was released for two matches (93.3%). And in the offseason, Seattle took Chris Dredger in the expansion draft, and now the Panthers have a Bobrovsky-Knight tandem. It is clear that the young goalkeeper will be given matches in the NHL. And how much depends on his game and Bob’s stability.
3. f Trevor Zegras (Anaheim)
20 years old, 183 cm / 83 kg
And here is another prodigy from the US gold team, and Zegras made a splash with his game, scoring 18 (7 + 11) points in seven MFM matches. He played in the AHL and was good in San Diego (10+11=21). Now he has played 24 games in the NHL, scoring 13 (3+10) points. And still considered a rookie. And if you consider that in the current composition of “Anaheim” there are absolutely no stars, then Zegras should be given a place in the first links and playing time.
4. d Jamie Drysdale (Anaheim)
19 years old, 180 cm / 79 kg
Defender of the Canadian team that lost to the USA in the World Cup final (0:2). Drysdale scored 2 (0 + 2) points in the tournament, also passed San Diego (4 + 6 = 10 in 14) and was attracted to Anaheim for 24 games, in which he scored 8 (3 + 5) points. Now, matured and matured, he will also fight for the Calder Trophy. I wonder if he can get into the top three finalists along with Zegras.
5. f Egor Chinakhov (Columbus)
20 years old, 182 cm / 81 kg
Also played at MFM where he scored 1 (1+0) points in five matches. He managed to break into the basis of Avangard, where he earned 17 (10+7) points in 32 matches and showed himself as a good sniper with a well-placed wrist throw. Helped the “hawks” in the playoffs (5 + 2 = 7 in 21), won the Gagarin Cup – and decided to continue his career in the NHL. Chinakhov scored a lot both in the rookie tournament in Michigan and in control matches. If we talk about the Russians, then you can rather bet on this striker that he will have the most real chances in the fight for Calder.
6. Vasily Podkolzin (Vancouver)
20 years old, 192 cm / 92 kg
Captain of the Russian youth team, physically strong and talented forward. He was selected by the Canucks with the tenth overall pick in the 2019 draft. For the last three years, a lot has been said about Podkolzin. His problem is that he scores few points. Although the rest is good – power struggle, character, passion on ice. And everyone is waiting for Vasily to break through. Maybe it will happen in North America, where Podkolzin went, refusing to renew his contract with SKA.
7. s Moritz Seider (Detroit)
20 years old, 192 cm / 94 kg
He showed himself well at the youth and adult levels, and at the last World Championship in Riga (0 + 5 = 5 points in 10 games) was even recognized as the best defender of the tournament and entered the symbolic national team. The German was also the best defender in the Swedish league, where he scored 28 (7+21) points in 41 games for Regle. Detroit took Zyder with the sixth overall pick in the 2019 draft and is seen as the heir to Niklas Lidström fame.
8. f Lucas Raymond (Detroit)
19 years old, 179 cm / 83 kg
A year later, Detroit GM Steve Yzerman took the Swedish striker Raymond with the fourth pick in the draft. Last season he played for Frølunda (6+12=18 in 34), played for the Swedish youth team (2+3=5 in 5). Now he’s signed with the Red Wings and is on his way to a rebuilding team where he’ll probably be allowed to prove himself.
9. f. Marco Rossi (Minnesota)
20 years old, 176 cm / 84 kg
The Wild selected this Austrian forward with the ninth overall pick in the 2020 draft. And how not to choose, if in the OHL season for the “Ottawa 67” he scored 120 (39 + 81) points in 56 games? But after that, Rossi fell ill with a coronavirus, and this gave a heart complication. Therefore, the striker did not come to the NHL last season. Now he’s nearing his NHL debut – and could have a good season.
10. f. Quinton Byfield (LA)
19 years old, 194 cm / 100 kg
The big forward, who was selected by the Kings with the second overall pick in the 2020 Draft, played in the NHL last season with 1 (0+1) points in six games. He also played for the Canadian silver team at the MFM (2 + 5 = 7 in 7).
