Bon Lin is an amazing school. My kids are both there. I am a secondary teacher but I do know that at any age, you must be engaged and communicate with the teachers. One child does have gifted abilities and must be challenged or there will be behavior problems. He had a tough first year but is thriving now because of the administration and staff. The teachers I have encountered go above and beyond what is expected for my children and love my children. No one has ever complained or said anything negative to me and I messaged one teacher almost daily. Mr. McClellan is now the principal and he has impressed me overall. He and his administrative staff want what is best for my children academically and socially. There is no place I”d rather B (the Bartlett City Schools tag line). In this case the B is for Bon Lin.

I have had three children pass through this school and I would recommend parents try to send your children elsewhere. On a district wide level Special Ed for exceptional and special needs children is almost non-existent, definitely not a priority. At a school level the principal is just plain incompetent. Her definitive comment to me was exactly “If you don’t like it then send your child to another school.” What could be more helpful? Ridiculous procedures for normal kids. One of the worst things is the vast amounts of time my children spent doing coloring sheets or watching movies. These are the main activities of choice whenever there is a partial week of school or any down time. I would estimate about 10 % of the school year the kids have non-teaching time. Beyond the severe lack of administrative common sensibility (case in point Parent’s tutoring special needs children, volunteers working while paid employees sit around chatting for hours, etc) is the damage to the kids when subjected to a year of sub standard teachers. Two of my children, both of whom are gifted, spent two years at the Middle school trying catch up in Math class. Both had the same 5th grade Math teacher that taught very little actual Math. Do not volunteer at this school, you work so that others can stand around.
