When buying new gear, it is important to find gear that fits your specific style of play. Leg pads in particular are one of the most important (and expensive!) purchases.
Goalies today have an incredibly diverse choice of leg pads, though in their most basic terms, pads can be sorted into two categories: stiff pads, and soft pads.
What we will cover:

It needs to be said before we get into the distinctions between the two categories that all pads today are butterfly pads. Soft pad or stiff pad, both will perform properly in the butterfly. Both will slide very well. Both will exhibit proper rotation. What we are discussing here are some of the finer details and nuances that will help to fit a pad to your specific style.

Traditionally identified by knee rolls and multiple breaks in the V-roll, the soft pad tends to move with the goalie a little bit more, and flexes to accommodate their movement.
This kind of pad tends to kill rebounds when struck. A soft pad absorbs much of the force of impact, leaving the puck nearby to be covered up. In addition, their boot tends to be softer, allowing for a deeper flex if wanted, and some have a tapered toe. Make no mistake though, those beautiful knee rolls are almost entirely for aesthetic purposes.
The soft pads on the market today are not like the pads of the past. They are no longer stuffed full of shredded foam or deer hair—rather, they have a solid core with multiple breaks in it at flex points near in the boot, below the knee, and sometimes above the knee. In front of this core layer are layers of impact dampening foam that help to deaden the rebounds. This pad can work well for the goalie who perhaps is not yet comfortable with the butterfly style, or plays more of a hybrid style. Alternatively, goalies who are very athletic or flexible will enjoy this kind of pad, as it allows them to utilize their full range of movement. Finally, this pad will be for any goalie who places an emphasis on keeping their rebounds in tight.
While a soft pad can move with a goalie very well, they may not have the same coverage as a stiffer pad in the same size. This is partially due to torsion in the pad that can happen easier due to the inner construction. Additionally, soft rebounds can be a gift to the shooter in the slot if not properly handled.

The stiff pad is what many people picture when they think of a butterfly goalie. With their flat faces and steeper boot angles, stiff pads take up as much of the net as possible. These pads will send rebounds far into the corners, and will generally stand taller and straighter. If soft pads move with you, stiff pads allow you to move, while sitting on top, to provide more coverage.
These pads are by no means unwieldy though. Stiff pads such as the Warrior G3’s tend to be some of the lightest on the market.
Their construction is usually of a solid core, with flex points at the boot, and occasionally, right below the knee. In front of that will lay high density foam, which helps to deal with the rebounds. Goalies who will find this pad suits them are ones who are comfortable in the butterfly, and who want to have as much coverage as possible. If you have a very narrow butterfly, stiff pads can be gotten with an aggressive pre-curve to help close the 5-hole, though this is an option that more flexible goalies may find interferes with their movement. Of course, if you would like your rebounds to bounce deep into the corners, this style of pad will be for you.
Mishandled rebounds from a stiff pad are also not a happy occasion. If, instead of shooting into the corner, your rebound careens directly onto a player’s stick, you will have less time to get over to make that save.

NHL goalie equipment continues to shrink, premium on scoring
Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck recently stopped a puck near his collarbone.
It was a shot that, in years past, he might not have thought about twice.
This time, it hurt.
“Didn’t feel very good,” Hellebuyck said.
He and his fellow NHL goalies will be wearing a smaller chest protector this season as the league continues to reduce the size of equipment, following recent reductions for pads and pants. The overall aim is to boost scoring while at the same time rewarding athletic ability in the crease by eliminating unnecessary padding that wasn’t protecting goalies, but instead simply helping them block pucks.
A 190-pound goalie and a 240-pound goalie will no longer cut the same figure on the ice.
“Three or four years ago, talking to some of the best goalies in hockey … they wanted us to try to find a way to make goalies look closer to the size they were,” Kay Whitmore, NHL vice president of hockey operations, told The Canadian Press. “The biggest complaint was, ‘If I weigh 50 pounds more than another guy, why do we look the same?'”
The league, working in conjunction with the NHL Players’ Association, has focused on reducing the size of the shoulders on chest protectors by roughly an inch to make them less boxy and more form-fitting.
The same goes for the padding on a goalie’s arms.
Getting the new equipment has taken longer because of delays with manufacturers, but Whitmore said the league is close to what will become the “new normal.”
“We wanted to get it right once and for all,” he said. “It was a more complicated piece of equipment than when we introduced the new pants or pads. We can ask companies to make changes, but things didn’t move very fast until we created a standard, gave them specifics and asked them to build to it.”
Whitmore, who played the position for 155 games with four NHL teams in his 15-year pro career, said safety remains a top priority.
“There’s no expectation that a goalie should have to do his job getting bruised daily,” he said. “I don’t want to see guys go on the ice fearful of getting hit with pucks, because that’s what they do for a living.”
Mathieu Schneider, special assistant to NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr, said the personal nature of chest protectors has been a challenge.
Some goalies had worn their old ones for a decade or more.
“The irony is each time we’ve made equipment smaller, it’s gotten lighter and goalies have gotten better,” said Schneider, a former NHL defenseman. “It’s not like this snuck up on us.”
Toronto goalie Frederik Andersen said he is fine with the changes, adding that an inch of missing shoulder coverage shouldn’t make a difference in terms of results if he’s on his game.
“It’s about being square,” Andersen said. “If I’m relying on that extra inch, I’m in trouble already.”
Fellow Maple Leafs goalie Garret Sparks said he thinks the change could eventually help raise the skill level at the position.
“It just pushes me to be better,” he said. “I’m open to the challenge as long as everybody’s covered.”
NHL shooters scored more times in 2017-18 than in any season since 2005-06, averaging nearly six goals per game.
With that in mind, Hellebuyck said he doesn’t see a need to change — for any reason.
“I’m not happy about it because it’s my job,” he said. “And really what they want is me to be worse.”
With the process underway since 2016, Whitmore said, recent history gives him confidence the new gear will provide the game an overall benefit.
“It makes the job a little more difficult,” he said. “We changed other things to make goaltenders more mobile. At first they didn’t agree with it, but once they started playing they felt faster, quicker and actually got better. I don’t expect anything different from this once they adapt.”
Goalie Edition – The Stick Guru
If you liked the player version of What to Buy New vs Used. Don’t worry goalies! We haven’t forgotten about you. Playing goalie is the most expensive position in hockey so let’s try to save you some money. The used market for goalie gear is pretty big.
What you should buy new
Helmet/ Mask
Like player helmets, goalie helmets should never be bought used. As much as you don’t want to, you will take pucks to the head and you want to be as protected as possible.
Every shot can wear down the protection of the helmet and you would never know how many it’s taken. If you must buy it used take off all the snaps and straps and check for any cracking of the helmet. Also check the foams for any wear or breakdown. Even when buying used, the newer the better. Many goalie masks are painted aftermarket and the certification stickers have been removed. So you have no way of telling if the certificate is still valid. Many leagues require the certificates to be valid. Custom painted masks, if not done properly, can lower the protectiveness of the mask so keep that in mind. The only exception is ball hockey, where you don’t need the same protection as you would in ice or roller. So buying used it totally okay in that situation. Your head is not something to cheap out on. You may not need a top of the line mask, but be realistic with your level of play.
Stick
Goalie sticks take quite the beating. That being said, we all want to save money but you may get more life out of a new stick.
The good news it they are generally more inexpensive compared to players sticks. If you do buy used, ask if you can take the tape off to check for any damage.
Dangler
I would recommend buying a new one. They can shatter at any time, even when brand new. It may rub against the chin of the mask, causing scratches which can hinder the protection. A used dangler is perfectly okay as long as there isn’t any cracks. They are pretty inexpensive as well.
Throat protectors
I wouldn’t trust the protection of a used throat protector. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a used one for sale.
Cup/Jock
Used Jocks sound gross, buy a new jock.
What you can buy used
Leg Pads
Goalie leg pads are probably the most popular used item. It’s no lie that goalie pads are expensive, at upwards of $1000, and goalies wanting new pads want to recoup at least some of that. Depending on the level of pad, the resale value can be pretty low so you can get a great deal on used ones.
And the best part is that you don’t have to break them in. Some beer league goalies have used NHL pro returns because the pads offer high quality protection while also lighter than retail. What would last an NHL-er a few weeks will last for many years in your beer league. When buying used pads theres a few things to look out for, Make sure there is minimal or no smell, the sliding pads aren’t worn down, the straps aren’t falling off or missing and check the bottom part of the pad for wear. Also check for any damage to the corners of the pads or any “bubbling” of the front leather. If it passes all those tests it should be a good set of used pads. Some straps can be inexpensively replaced so its not necessarily a deal breaker.
Glove/Catcher
Behind leg pads, Gloves and blockers are the second most popular used item. They are meant to take a beating so they can last a long time. Check that the palm isn’t too broken down as that might hurt your hand. The only major other issue with a used glove is a “crusty” palm.
After many coats of sweat, water and ice, the inside of the palm may break down and get a bit crusty. There are some places which will re-palm it for you, which can extend the life of the glove.
Blocker
Like the glove, a crusty palm is something unpleasant about a used blocker. However, unlike gloves, blockers are quite easy to re-palm. I have had success getting it done and it feels like new. The place I get mine done (link) only charges $30. So that may save you a lot of money in the long run. Make sure the front of the blocker still has stiff, non broken down foam.
Chest and Arm
You can definitely get a used C&A. As long as there is still plenty of usable protection in it it will be safe for use. Depending on how broken down the pads are you may get some bruises or stingers but that’s preference. Make sure that the used C&A doesn’t smell too bad. Or make some hockey soup.
Pants
Surprisingly, goalie pants don’t take much abuse (at least in my experience).
So I would definitely consider used pants. Goalie pants can be kept for a long time so many goalies do keep them. The used market may have some very old and very used pants. As long as the plastic and foams in the front are intact they should work. Also make sure there is minimal smell.
Skates
Skates can go both ways. Modern skates are heat moldable so they were most likely molded and broken in to the previous owners foot. If you can find a pair that fits that’s great! I would learn towards new but if you’re on a budget, used is definitely a good option. Make sure the liner isn’t ripped and there is still plenty of steel left. Also make sure the steel also isn’t rusted. Lastly check the toe cap, as a damaged one could lead to some broken toes.
Knee Guards
Knee guards are totally optional to begin with, so its really up to you. They can break down over time especially from all the extra sweat and water build up. They can be used, and their small size allow them to be easily cleaned.
Many have plastic knee caps so make sure there are no cracks. These are generally under $100 so if you can new ones. It would be better but used is a great option.

There are a bunch of places to get used gear. NHL team sales and Pro Stock Hockey have great pro level gear. Check out your local Play-It-Again Sports, which specializes in used gear, not only hockey. And they are literally everywhere across the US and Canada. We are all, not all, but most are “hostages of brands”! Marketing and advertising are now very advanced in influencing the desire to buy any brand name, and not the products of NOT “market giant” …
People believe that if a famous goalkeeper in the same National Hockey League plays in a certain outfit, let’s call it for example Johnson, then this equipment is at the highest technological level by all criteria! And the fact that these products have a short bounce of the puck, which contributes to the quick finishing of it into your own goal, that the shields, for example, of PRO goalkeepers fall apart in 1.5-2 months – nobody thinks! The layman needs Johnson on his outfit (for example), and what’s inside is secondary!
“Super light” – yes, it’s great that the same shin guards will weigh 20-30% lighter than a competitor … The lightness of the goalkeeper’s outfit is good! But at the same time there is always (!) “A double-edged sword”! The main disadvantages: their greater wear and tear – one, twisting on the leg when moving, and thus the cause of injuries – two, the unpredictable operation of the product at the beginning and end of the ice time – three! …..but … they will have the logo of the well-known manufacturer Johnson – isn’t that a guarantee !? I think – no!
So it’s not a pity for an ordinary goalkeeper (this term, I hope readers will understand correctly!) To give 1400-1900 US dollars for a pair of shields with the logos of a well-known brand …
